JioBook, a 4G-enabled budget laptop is expected to launch soon at ₹15,000

West Bengal ranked second after Uttar Pradesh in terms of absolute number of people who consume alcohol, a joint study by economic research agency <keyword id="209079" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="ICRIER">ICRIER</keyword> and law consulting firm <keyword id="2733040" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="PLR-Chambers">PLR Chambers</keyword> said. According to the study, nearly 1.4 crore people in West Bengal consume alcohol, and this sector is among the top three revenue earners of the state. The price model in the state has been tweaked recently from a free market to a lowest ex-distillery price (<keyword id="1425293" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="EDP">EDP</keyword>) and an increase in taxes has been witnessed, which is a major concern for the industry, the study said. It revealed that steep hikes in the market retail price have resulted in substantial decline of <keyword id="2035581" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="India-Made-Foreign-Liquor">India Made Foreign Liquor</keyword> (IMFL) sales in the state. Therefore, even though the formula for calculation is lowest EDP, the excise duty has been hiked and this issue needs to be studied taking into account how consumers react to price changes, it said. The report found that India is one of the fastest growing markets for alcoholic beverages globally, with an estimated market size of USD52.5 billion in 2020. The market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 6.8 per cent between 2020 and 2023. Production of alcoholic beverages increased by about 23.8 per cent during the period between 2015-16 and 2018-19 and the sector contributed to around 1.5 million jobs and generated around USD 48.8 billion in sales revenue in 2019, the study noted. Yet India is unable to become a large exporter like Chile, Argentina or China, it said. The Mukesh Ambani-led telco is now gearing up to enter the laptop segment in the country with an affordable offering. Earlier this year, a XDA <a href="https://www.xda-developers.com/jiobook-by-reliance-jio-jioos-rumor/">report</a> had revealed that Reliance Jio is working on a laptop, dubbed as JioBook. According to a MySmartPrice <a href="https://www.mysmartprice.com/gear/reliance-jiobook-geekbench-specifications-revealed/">report</a>, the JioBook has now been spotted on Geekbench, revealing some of its specifications ahead of the launch. In September, three JioBook models, NB1118QMW, NB1148QMW, and NB1112MM were spotted on the BIS certification site. Now, the NB1112MM variant has been spotted on Geekbench. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="JioBook features" comment="subhead" text="JioBook features">JioBook features</cmsannotation> The JioBook with the model number NB1112MM will reportedly run on the MediaTek MT8788 chipset coupled with 2GB RAM. Instead of Windows, the laptop will run on Android 11-based JioOS. The device scored 1178 points in the single-core test and 4246 points in the multi-core test. The MT788 chipset is an octa-core chipset with four performance cores and four power-efficiency cores. Apart from this, the company is also expected to launch a model with the Snapdragon 665 chipset. The company is expected to launch the laptops in 2GB RAM + 32GB storage and 4GB RAM + 64GB storage variants. The JioBook is expected to support 4G LTE connectivity and come pre-loaded with Jio’s suite of apps. While there is no information about the JioBook’s pricing, we expect it to be priced in the affordable segment considering its specifications. It will likely be aimed at students and first-time laptop users. We should know more about the JioBook in the coming days. Jio Platforms and Google have entered into a commercial agreement to jointly develop the entry-level affordable smartphone with optimisations to the Android operating system and the Play Store. In a mega investment announcement, Google announced to invest Rs 33,737 crore ($4.5 billion) in Jio Platforms for an equity stake of 7.73 per cent. This is the first investment from the $10 billion 'Google For India Digitisation Fund' announced earlier this week, which aims to accelerate India's digital economy over the next five to seven years through a mix of equity investments, partnerships, and operational, infrastructure and ecosystem investments. According to Google, the majority of people in India still don't have access to the Internet, and fewer still own a smartphone. Tarun Pathak, Associate Director, Counterpoint Research, told IANS that Jio has the potential to undercut its rivals in pricing as we have seen before. "Google's partnership will give it more flexibility to offer stable hardware and software experience. Individually, both Jio with initial 4G smartphone launches and Google with Android One programme did their best in the past to capture entry-level smartphone user base but didn't succeed," Pathak explained. This partnership aims to target the entry-level smartphone segment (less that Rs 10,000) which sells anywhere close to 60 million smartphones annually in India. "However, we see this happening once 5G networks are live," said Pathak. Google said it wants to work with Jio and other leaders in the local ecosystem to ensure that smartphones together with the apps and services in the Play Store - are within reach for many more Indians across the country. "We believe the pace of Indian innovation means that the experiences we create for India can ultimately be expanded to the rest of the world," said Sanjay Gupta, Country Head and VP, Google India. Google opened its first Indian campuses in Bengaluru and Hyderabad in 2004. "Since then, we've made India central to our Next Billion Users initiative-designed to ensure the internet is useful for people coming online for the first time. We've improved our apps and services so they're relevant in more Indian languages and created offline versions for those facing network constraints," added Sameer Samat, VP, Product Management at Google.
