The merger deal will create a big entity and help it to stay in the market at a "significant level", said Iger at a Morgan Stanley investor conference earlier this week. "We had an opportunity to align with Reliance, which is obviously the company that has done very well there and one that we respect. And in doing so, end up owning part of a bigger media company. And we believe that, that not only should benefit us in terms of the bottom-line, but derisk us as well there," he said. Last month, Walt Disney Co. and Reliance Industries announced signing of binding pacts to merge their media operations in India. Under the deal, Reliance and its affiliates will hold 63.16 per cent and Disney will have 36.84 per cent in the JV, which will create India's leading media company that will house two streaming services and around 120 television channels. "We wanted to stay in India. We made a big investment in India when we purchased the assets of 21st Century Fox. We are one of the biggest media companies in India. But even though it is the most populous country in the world, we felt we want to be there because of that, we also know that there are challenges in that market," he said. Iger said, the merger will create a big entity and help it to stay in the market at a "significant level". "So, it's kind of the best of both worlds. We stay in the market at a significant level. We have a very good partner in Reliance, and we get to have a chance of growing a business and lowering the risk of doing so," he added. The transaction values the joint venture at Rs 70,352 crore (USD 8.5 billion) on a post-money basis, excluding synergies. Billionaire Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance has also agreed to invest at closing Rs 11,500 crore into the joint venture to give it the muscle to fight rivals such as Japan's Sony, and Netflix. Its OTT platform Disney + Hotstar has seen its paid subscriber base decline from around 55 million to 40 million in the first quarter of FY24 because of Reliance's <keyword id="19985346" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="jio-cinema" source="keywords">Jio Cinema</keyword> winning exclusive rights for live sports. The combined entity will have the largest OTT subscriber base. Disney + Hotstar was launched in India in 2020, post the acquisition of the entertainment assets of 21st Century Fox at a valuation of USD 71.3 billion, thereby taking over the operations of Star India and Hotstar. It housed entertainment and cinema channels such as StarPlus and StarGold as well as sports channels like Star Sports. While Disney + Hotstar rapidly increased its subscriber base initially with the streaming rights of cricket matches (IPL, World Cup), it lost the bid for the digital streaming rights in 2023-27 cycle, which was won by Reliance-backed Viacom18 for USD 720 billion, 12.92 per cent higher than what Star India had paid on an average per match value. Media ventures of Reliance are currently housed in Network 18, which owns TV18 news channels as well as a plethora of entertainment (under the 'Colors' brand) and sports channels. NW18 also has stakes in moneycontrol.com, bookmyshow and publishes magazines. NW18 owns news channels CNBC/CNNNews. The month of November reveals same media consumption for the majority of the families as last month. Consumer’s online behaviour further reflect a preference of Indian languages over others. Among top OTT platforms Hotstar, Amazon Prime, Netflix, <keyword id="3739690" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="jio-tv" source="Orion">Jio TV</keyword> and MX Player were among the top choices. The December net CSI score, calculated by percentage increase minus percentage decrease in sentiment, was down to +8, from +9 last month and first time slight dip in the net score is observed since past 4 months, a reflection of the post-festive period sentiment. The sentiment analysis delves into 5 relevant sub-indices – Overall household spending, spending on essential and non-essential items, spending on healthcare, media consumption habits &amp; mobility trends. This month, Axis My India’s Sentiment Index also delved deeper to understand consumer’s consumption in the digital ecosystem in terms of OTT platforms, language preferences. Consumer sentiment was also tracked to understand their expenses in terms of discretionary products and investment preferences. In addition, the survey tracked consumer’s opinion on India’s performance in the T20 Word Cup. The surveys were carried out via Computer Aided Telephonic Interviews with a sample size of 10552 people across 36 states. 64% belonged from Rural India while 36% belonged from urban counterparts. Commenting on the November report, Pradeep Gupta, CMD, Axis My India, said, “With the year approaching to an end, we witness consumer’s gradual return to normalcy though a slight drop in Net Promoter Score also demonstrates that the impact of festive spending is slowly tapering. While media consumptions remain standard for majority, our CSI Survey has further revealed that consumers from the north as well as the south favour vernacular languages when engaging with the digital mediums. This insight opens up opportunities for various local as well as national and international players in terms of where &amp; in which form to place their brand content and advertisements. Moreover it is interesting to note that inspite of a plethora of new age tech firms coming up with IPOs, Indian consumers still prefer to park their confidence in established companies and Government owned stocks and shares, providing a contrarian approach to the FOMO investing theory.” Key findings: ·Overall household spending has increased for 62% of families which reflects a 1% decrease from the last month. This increase is majorly reflected in the northern part of India ·The increase in spends on essentials like personal care &amp; household items stands at 49% showcasing a surge in the north and south of India. The net score which was +27 last month remains the same for this month. Percentage of families whose consumption remain same as last month has increased by 2% from last month. ·Spends on non-essential &amp; discretionary products like AC, Car, Refrigerator has increased for 15% of families. While the increase in non-essential spends has decreased by an overall 3% from last month. The net score therefore which was at +9 last month has reduced to +6. The increase in spends is however identified in north and eastern part of India ·Consumption on health-related items has increased for 42% of families which overall represents the lowest percentage in the last three months. The health score which has a negative connotation i.e., the lesser the spends on health items the better the sentiments, has a net score value of -25. ·Consumption of media remains the same for a majority of 52% families which reflects the highest percentage since the last four months and is majorly from the south of India. Consumption has increased for 22% of the family, majorly from east and north, majorly amongst 18YO-25YO and 26YO-35YO. Overall, the Net score of this month is at -4 as compared to -2 for the previous month. ·81% families said that they are going out the same for short vacations, mall and restaurants as compared to last month. This represents a steady increase in movement from 78% in August to 3% increase in November. Increase in movement is majorly seen in the south of India and the least in the North. Increase in mobility is further seen concentrated among the 18YO-25YO. The overall mobility score is at -5. On topics of current national interest: <ul><li>·Axis My India further gauged consumer’s sentiment on their digital behaviour. A combined 27% said that they prefer engaging with websites and mobile applications in Hindi and other regional languages while 24% preferred English. Moreover it was identified that 31% of the population that resides in the southern part of India prefers using apps and websites in the English language, whereas 27% in the northern belt prefers engaging with Hindi based apps and networks. In addition, regional language based apps and sites reflected the choice of southern India at 34%. In addition it was discovered that majority of the youngsters (60%) amongst 18-25 prefer digital interactions in English, whereas those above 51 prefer Hindi and other regional languages.</li><li>·When asked if they spend time watching content on OTT or video streaming platforms, only 27% said yes whereas 73% reflected their view otherwise demonstrating the scope of penetration. Majority of the viewers are of the age of 18-35. Of the people who prefer OTT content, a majority directed their choice towards Hotstar followed by Amazon Prime and Netflix.</li><li>·In terms of investment choices in stock and shares, 17% and 12% showcased their preference towards Private Companies and Government-owned respectively. Only 1% said they preferred to invest in IPOs, contrary to the euphoria around new generation IPO’s</li><li>·Capturing consumer indulgence, Axis My India survey showcased that only 7% bought discretionary product this month like AC, TV, Fridge etc. Out of which 34% further claimed to have bought a 2-Wheeler, whereas a mighty 21%, 18% and 9% have spent on Television, Fridge and Car respectively.</li><li>·Gauging views around Team India’s average performance in T20 World Cup 2021, the survey further discovered that out of those who have watched ICC T20 WC, 48% believe that it is due to the team selection while 23% believe it was a result of player fatigue.</li></ul>

During the earnings call, Netflix co-founder and chairman Reed Hastings spoke about the company’s India investment and why the country remains a tremendous opportunity. However, Hastings didn’t hold back to say that the investment in India remains speculative. “India, we're still figuring things out. And so that investment takes some guts and belief forward-looking. But the other investments you should think of, just like rich European countries, content exports really well, and we're just getting a little better every month on it,” he said. Hastings compared India’s growth chapter to the success the company has seen in Korea, Japan, where the country has doubled down on original content. “(About India) I would say we're still mostly focused on getting a content fit and getting broader content. So that's why I'd say that one is a more speculative investment than, say, Korea or Japan, which, again, 5 years ago was very speculative when we did those, okay? But we've got off – we're over the hump on that,” he said. The streaming giant’s top executives remained bullish about India and it being a ‘tremendous opportunity’. Earlier, Netflix had <a href="https://techcrunch.com/2021/03/03/netflix-to-release-41-original-indian-shows-and-movies-this-year/">announced</a> its plans to release 41 new original productions this year, in India alone. Theodore A. Sarandos, Netflix’s co-CEO, chief content officer and director said that in India, the wait is worth it. “It's just, like all great opportunities, it's a long journey, and it's a challenge. And we think it's worth it. And that's why we're investing early and trying to stay ahead of it. And I think we'll be able to see those kinds of results that we've seen in other places in the world as we continue to learn more and more and more,” he said. So, even though Indian remains a low ARPU (average revenue per user) market, it has only pushed the company for more pricing experiments. Gregory Peters, Netflix’s chief operating officer and chief product officer, said that the company is still trying to figure out the right pricing model for India. Netflix has gone from desktop only plans starting at ₹699 per month, to introducing mobile only plans in India for as low as ₹199. They have also built partnerships with the likes of Jio, Asia’s richest man Mukesh Ambani’s telecom and digital platform. Peters spoke about a successful strategy for them has been leveraging go-to-market partners who have existing relationships with consumers and use them to push Netflix service and then have them make it ‘easy to pay’. “The ultimate and easy to pay is it just included the sort of bundled offerings that we've been doing more and more of, and Jio is a great example of a partner we've been working with there to really bring the service to a new demographic at a very, very low price associated with low-cost mobile plans that they're offering as well as home-based IPTV plans. And those have been successful for us as well,” said Peters. Netflix co-founder Reed Hastings says India is a 'speculative' investment – talks about pricing experiments and partnership with Jio

Content streaming giant Netflix has reported slow growth in its third quarter (July-September period) despite the social distancing times, admitting that it has much work to do in countries like India which are lagging behind in terms of growth for the company. Netflix said growth has slowed with 2.2 million paid subscribers in Q3 while the company added 6.8 million paid net adds in the same quarter last year. While the APAC region was the largest contributor to its paid membership growth (accounting for 46 per cent of all global paid net adds) as APAC revenue rose 66 per cent (year over year) especially in South Korea and Japan, Netflix has a lot of ground to cover in India. "We're working with local partners like Reliance Jio, India's largest mobile operator, where in Q3 we launched a bundle with their mobile and fiber broadband plans. As part of this broad partnership, we'll integrate Netflix with two of Jio's set top boxes," the company said in a letter to its shareholders on Tuesday. "We've also partnered with financial institutions in India to make payment processing easier and more seamless for our members, which we expect will have retention benefits," it added. Netflix said that its non-fiction series 'Indian Matchmaking' was watched by a quarter of its members in India and millions of members outside of India in its first four weeks. "We invest heavily into improving our product, partnerships and overall consumer experience. For example, in India in Q3, we localized our service to support Hindi in our user interface," the streaming platform said. "We strive to be a global entertainment service that can satisfy the needs of members all over the world. Commissioning and producing local language content is an important part of that". The company generated over 1.3 billion in net cash in Q3 2020. Free cash flow was positive for a third consecutive quarter at $1.1 billion. Admitting that the state of the pandemic and its impact continues to make projections very uncertain, Netflix said it expects growth to revert back to levels similar to pre-Covid in 2021. "With $8.4 billion in cash on our balance sheet at the end of the quarter plus our $750m credit facility (which is undrawn), our need for external financing is diminishing. As indicated last quarter, we don't have plans to access the capital markets this year," Netflix told shareholders.
