The employee, who has been with Amazon for a year and a half, shared his story with a surprising level of transparency. Vodafone Idea and Reliance Jio lost 1.41 million and 758,000 mobile subscribers, respectively. Overall, the telecom subscriber base in the country declined marginally to 1,205.17 million in July from 1,205.64 million in June. North East, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Mumbai, Kolkata, Tamil Nadu, Punjab, Bihar, West Bengal, UP East, Haryana, Andhra Pradesh telecom circles recorded decline in mobile customer base post the hike in mobile services rates. The wireline or the fixed line connections segment increased by about 1% to 35.56 million in July from 35.11 million in June. Reliance Jio led the fixed-line segment with addition of over 480,000 new subscribers. It was followed by Bharti Airtel which added over 136,000 new subscribers, VMIPL 12,413, Vi 11,375, Tata Teleservices 3,971 and Quadrant added 12 new fixed line customers. BSNL was the biggest loser in the segment. The state-run firm lost 134,000 fixed line customers and its sister concern lost 56,454 customers. The broadband customer base in the country increased to 946.19 million at the end of July from 940.75 million in June. Top five players accounted for 98.42% of total broadband connection in the country. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Allison Chen studied to be a pastry chef and worked in a kitchen while attending Duke University.</li><li>She was passionate about baking but worried about pursuing a low-paid career after college.</li></ul>This as-told-to essay is based on a transcribed conversation with Allison Chen, 21, from New York, about using TikTok as a source of income. The following has been edited for length and clarity.During my sophomore year at Duke University, I decided to move to France for a sixth-month pastry school. I was a biology major then but had lost interest in my degree. I've always loved cooking, particularly baking, and I decided to take some time off from college to pursue that passion.Since studying at pastry school, I've worked as a pastry chef and have been building a baking TikTok account alongside my degree. My creator side hustle has been much more lucrative than any of my work in an actual kitchen, but I still don't think I'll be a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/top-ways-to-make-money-as-content-creator">content creator full-time</a> immediately after university.<h2 id="2b5c823d-d883-44fe-8547-e41976f84b63">I went to a pastry school in France</h2>France has the best pastries, and during my semester-long break from Duke in 2022, I attended École Ducasse to get my pastry diploma. This one was the most modern of the pastry programs I looked at. My <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/college-student-budget-spending-tuition-2018-6">parents were paying for my college</a> education, so I used the money they would have spent on the semester and put it toward pastry school instead.I learned about fundamental pastry techniques and French desserts. We made things like chocolate, croissants, and ice cream. I went to school six hours a day, four days a week. The school was based in rural France, so it was also a nice change of pace. I feel so lucky that I could have this experience; it was life-changing.I finished the program in June 2022 and did a stage — which is an unpaid internship — in a patisserie in Paris.I knew that I wanted to finish my bachelor's degree, and returned to Duke in August. I started a part-time job the following January, working back-of-house as a pastry prep cook in a restaurant near my university campus. I wanted to continue to practice my baking skills in a commercial setting.<h2 id="dfa66a0e-0d04-4492-aade-5298f7feeb40">While at pastry school, I started making baking content on TikTok</h2>I downloaded the<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/making-tiktok-content-job-what-to-know-before-starting-2022"> TikTok app</a> a month before going to pastry school. I had made a few TikToks before, but while there, I'd film the chef's demonstrations, showing what my pastry looked like and filming myself eating it at the end. I wanted to document my experience so people back home could see what I was up to.My videos started to go semi-viral, and over a month into posting, I had a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.tiktok.com/@alchenny/video/7069369432019176747">video</a> that hit a million views. I shared videos daily, and people seemed interested in what I'd learn next. I didn't intend to monetize my videos, but when I got back to the US, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/top-ways-influencers-find-brand-deals-key-takeaways-new-survey-2024-4">brands started reaching out</a> to me with deal offers.Most brands I work with are in the lifestyle space; they want me to help promote their products to a college-aged audience. I've done ads for a TV show and language app in the past.Most of the time, the brands let me plan the video. I typically cook or make a dessert in line with the company's theme or the product they were promoting. I'd promote the product in the video, disclosing it was an ad.<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-do-instagram-influencers-make-money">Content creation made me an income</a>, but I wanted to work in a restaurant for the experience. It's always good to work in different kitchens to learn how they operate and to learn new skills.<h2 id="723e394f-d841-476f-9f50-56cb92f65c05">I was able to make more from content creation than pastry work</h2>My part-time job as a pastry cook paid around $17 an hour. I worked between 10 and 12 hours a week on average. When I left in May 2023, at the end of the school term, I'd made around $3,000 over the five months.It solidified that being a pastry chef alone was not a lucrative career. While I would love to continue to bake all day, I'm not sure I'm cut out for the long hours and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/restaurant-owners-service-employees-staff-covid-pandemic-unemployment-2021-5">low pay of restaurant work</a>.When I was working at my part-time restaurant job, I posted five ads for three different companies on TikTok and made $23,600 — over $20,000 more than the $3,000 I made from the actual job.I now have almost 350,000 followers on TikTok, around 260,000 followers on Instagram, and 200,000 subscribers on YouTube. In addition to the money I can make from brand deals, I make as much as $500 a month through these platforms, including YouTube ad revenue and the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tiktok-creator-rewards-program-challenges-google-search-youtube-2024-3">Creator Rewards Program</a>.<h2 id="001abfdf-4c98-4983-beb9-6bc6c39d71f1">Content creation has given me an extra source of income; I don't need to worry so much about my future salary</h2>It's hard to be a really good <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-its-like-working-at-michelin-star-restaurant-from-pastry-chef-2022">pastry chef</a>. It requires a lot of work and doesn't always come with appropriate compensation. I think it's cool I've been able to supplement my pastry work with money from content creation. But content creation is essentially <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-change-careers-freelancing-side-hustle-earn-six-figures-2024-3">freelance work</a>, and the income isn't consistent, which can be stressful. I'm still making money from content and hope someday to turn it into my full time job.I graduated from Duke in mid-May after switching my major from biology to visual media studies. For now, I think I will get a job in addition to being a content creator. I'm thinking of applying for an internship in marketing to try something different and then returning to a pastry shop when I start to miss baking.Content creation has helped me to pay for more of my expenses. In 2024, I started paying for my college tuition, which has allowed me to alleviate that burden from my parents, who were paying for it previously.It's also given me more professional freedom. When I get a full-time job, whether it's in marketing or pastry or something else, I can be more flexible about the salary I'm earning because I have this <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/side-hustle-ideas-which-make-money-ugc-affiliate-marketing-2023-5">other source of income</a> — I can do pastry work without having to worry about the low income from working in a kitchen.

After mopping up a big chunk of the mass market, mostly low-margin prepaid users, the Ambani firm is now targetting the high-spending post-paid consumers with new plans bundled with a free subscription to OTT platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Disney+ Hotstar. On the other hand, Vodafone Idea has rebranded itself into Vi, and may, reportedly, find investors in <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/telecom/news/vodafone-idea-may-need-up-to-18800-crore-in-next-two-years-and-tariff-hikes-to-survive-says-a-new-report/articleshow/77923943.cms">US tech giants Amazon and Verizon</a>. This could give the Birla Group company the cash it needs to survive for the next two years, according to the Jefferies report. Those backing Airtel had hoped that Vi will fall by the wayside and the market will be down to a duopoly that they share with Jio. Reliance Jio is now twice as valued as Airtel that is down 25% from its peak in May

<keyword id="22053621" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Insurance-regulator-IRDA" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Insurance regulator IRDA" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Insurance regulator IRDA">Insurance regulator IRDA</keyword> has introduced sweeping reforms for various <keyword id="19936531" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="life-insurance" source="keywords">life insurance</keyword> products. In its master circular dated 12th June, 2024, the insurance watchdog laid out a slew of customer-friendly directives for life insurance companies to follow with immediate effect. Read on to know all about how these new rules will impact you : <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Customer information sheet" comment="subhead" text="Customer information sheet"><keyword id="22033784" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="customer-information-sheet" source="keywords">Customer information sheet</keyword></cmsannotation> Going ahead, all life insurance companies will have to mandatorily provide their policyholders with a CIS, or Customer Information Sheet. This will serve to explain to them the basic features of the policy in very simple terms, and will include essential details like sum assured, benefits, policy loan options, free-look period and procedures for making claims and redressing grievances. In addition, benefits payable to the policyholder if they survive the policy tenure (maturity benefits), upon death and surrender of policy should also be clearly spelt out. Along with this, the policyholders are also entitled to a customised illustration of how the policy will benefit them while they are being sold the policy. CIS should also be made available to the policyholder in their local language on request. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Free-look and grace period" comment="subhead" text="Free-look and grace period"><keyword id="22053620" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Free-look-and-Grace-Period" source="Orion">Free-look and grace period</keyword></cmsannotation> Policyholders will now have a 30-day window from the day they receive the policy document to review and cancel the policy if they want. If the policy is cancelled within this period, they will be entitled to a full premium refund. Earlier, this period only lasted for 15 days. For grace period, which basically refers to the additional, penalty-free window given to the policyholder to make premium payment post due date to avoid losing coverage, the windows will differ depending on premium payment frequency. If you pay the policy premiums on a monthly basis, you will get a 15-day grace period. For premium payments made on a quarterly/half-yearly or annual basis, the grace period will be of 30 days. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Penalty on violating Ombudsman’s word" comment="subhead" text="Penalty on violating Ombudsman’s word">Penalty on violating Ombudsman’s word</cmsannotation> The insurer is bound to comply with the <keyword id="960887" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Insurance-Ombudsman" source="Orion">Insurance Ombudsman</keyword>’s award within 30 days of receiving the same. In case the same is violated, the insurer will have to pay a penalty of Rs 5,000 per day to the complainant. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Higher value on early policy surrender" comment="subhead" text="Higher value on early policy surrender">Higher value on early policy surrender</cmsannotation> Often, policyholders ended up with a low, negligible amount as refund upon surrendering their insurance policy. This is set to change with <keyword id="21879234" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="IRDA" source="keywords">IRDA</keyword>’s latest directives. Now, policyholders will be eligible for <keyword id="885219" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="surrender-value" source="Orion">surrender value</keyword> even if they decide to surrender their policy after just one year. Previously, only 50% of <keyword id="2939473" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="policy-premium" source="Orion">policy premium</keyword> would be refunded, provided the policyholders surrendered their policy between years 4-7 of the policy tenure. Moreover, they would lose the entire premium amount if they surrendered their policy within a year. Customers will also be entitled to higher special surrender value (SSV) from now on. This SSV should be at least equivalent to the expected present one of the these three: <ol><li>Paid up sum assured, or present value of your sum assured after you stop paying premiums</li><li>Paid up future benefits</li><li>Accrued benefits</li></ol>Also, it will be compulsory for life insurers to offer loans to policyholders as per the eligible surrender value of the policy. Says Vivek Jain, Head, Investments, Policybazaar.com, "The provision for higher Surrender Value (SV), calculated at a prevailing 10-year government securities rate with a limited spread, significantly increases the value returned to policyholders in the event of a policy surrender, after the completion of first year. The mandatory facility of policy loans across all life insurance savings products and the allowance of partial withdrawals under pension products will provide vital financial flexibility, which will enable policyholders to meet liquidity needs and specific financial goals. These measures will certainly enhance trust and transparency in the industry." <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Partial withdrawal allowed from pension products" comment="subhead" text="Partial withdrawal allowed from pension products">Partial withdrawal allowed from pension products</cmsannotation> Policyholders will be allowed to make partial withdrawals, provided they have 3 years of continuous coverage under their insurance-cum-pension plan. Also, these withdrawals cannot be more than 25% of the total premiums paid till date. The insurer cannot use this withdrawal towards making any adjustments in the policy's sum assured. However, this withdrawal will only be allowed for specific situations, like funding children’s higher education/marriage, constructing a house, treating critical illnesses, starting a new venture or for skill development purposes.

As the economy takes center stage in the upcoming election, parents are watching both candidates closely.In a statement responding to the criticism, a spokeswoman for Vance, Taylor Van Kirk, told Business Insider that the vice presidential candidate believes the federal government should compensate family members and other kin for providing childcare. She also pointed to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.cbsnews.com/amp/news/transcript-jd-vance-on-face-the-nation-aug-11-2024/">recent comments</a> Vance made arguing that childcare subsidies shouldn't "favor one family model over another.""Senator Vance, who was raised largely by his own grandmother, knows firsthand the great sacrifice many grandparents, aunts and uncles and other relatives make when they care for a child who isn't their own," Van Kirk said. "Senator Vance believes in addressing kinship care with federally supported initiatives so that these families are relieved of an enormous, oftentimes unseen, financial burden and have the necessary resources to care for these kids."<h2 id="ed50e753-5c49-4632-aae6-32b9a90ea14d">The childcare crisis meets the retirement crisis</h2>Sandra, 51, has been dealing with both childcare and eldercare challenges over the past year.Sandra, who requested her last name be withheld to protect her family's privacy, has been taking care of her mother-in-law, who recently suffered an injury, while also helping to financially support her stepdaughter. She doesn't see herself having the time or the financial means to contribute to her children's potential childcare needs in the future."Our goal is to one day retire. Our goal is to one day be able to put ourselves in a nursing home if we need that, and to not be the financial and also health caregiver burden on my stepdaughter," Sandra told BI. "And when she has children, would we love to be that grandma and grandpa that helped out? Absolutely. Do we know that we could physically or mentally do it? We're not sure."The looming retirement crisis is weighing on many older Americans. The Census Bureau's Population Survey found that more than half of respondents over 65 earned under $30,000 in 2022. At the same time, an AARP <a target="_blank" href="https://press.aarp.org/2024-4-24-New-AARP-Survey-1-in-5-Americans-Ages-50-Have-No-Retirement-Savings">survey</a> found that around one-fifth of adults aged 50 and older have no retirement savings.Sandra said that "retirement feels completely out of reach for her." While she earns income as a freelance writer, she and her husband are putting a significant amount of financial resources toward helping the older members of their family and said that in her situation, "there is no 'get grandma to help.'""It seems like a very American problem that could be solved, but when you say things like, 'just have grandma help out more,' that's a privilege that I think a lot of people don't have at all," she said.Elliot Haspel, a senior fellow at the nonpartisan family policy think tank Capita, told BI that there is a way to solve the problem — and Vance actually might be on the right track. While he acknowledged that Vance's comments lacked many important details, Haspel said that the idea of implementing more pathways to support family, friends, or neighbor caregivers — or FFNs — is a key way to address the childcare problem in the US."If better support of grandparents and other FFN caregivers was part of a comprehensive approach to childcare, then it can be really effective at making sure that American families have access to the options for care that they need and that are going to help their children develop healthily, and with the early learning that they're going to need to succeed later," Haspel said.He added that there's an opportunity here for Vice President Kamala Harris to expand on her childcare proposals in her platform — she has expressed support for national paid family leave and bolstered investments in childcare, but it did not address FFNs.That could play out in a number of ways; for example, Haspel said, Sweden extended paid leave to grandparents wanting to take care of their grandchildren. Similarly, the US could require a comprehensive federal package to ensure sufficient funding, along with more robust investment in educational programs for child development — an idea Vance mentioned in his comments."It's going to be good for communities. It's going to be good for neighborhoods. It's going to be good for the economy. It's going to be good for social infrastructure and social connection," Haspel said. "So you can go down the line and there's a lot of reasons to want a comprehensive, pluralistic approach to childcare."Jennifer Baker, 40, found Vance's comments to be myopic and "shockingly inadequate." If parents had access to a familial network, she said, they'd probably already be taking advantage of it. For her, that's not an option: As a military spouse, Baker had to move away from her support networks."Our situation is not unique," Baker, who's based in Arizona, said. "Military families that are active duty, they go through long-term deployments, short tour deployments, they get relocated often every two years or four years."For her, figuring out childcare and balancing budgets has been a burden."I was essentially forced to go back to work based on financial need weeks, if not months, before my body was physically ready for me to go back," she said.Angela Rachidi, a senior fellow and Rowe Scholar at the right-leaning American Enterprise Institute, said that one underlying issue is that many mothers of younger children would prefer to work part-time — but the labor market isn't well structured to accommodate that type of work, especially for women who still want to develop their careers and career paths."It's a broader issue and something that both the private sector and employees can work out just trying to make the work schedules and the nature of work fit better with family life," Rachidi said. "And that would help parents who want to stay home and care for kids; it would also help grandparents who want to help care for kids while their parents are working."Rachidi also said that revisiting the usefulness of regulations around informal care — settings like friend and family care — should be on the table, too. Right now, she said, those <a target="_blank" href="https://www.aei.org/opportunity-social-mobility/the-problem-with-child-care-regulations/">burdensome regulations</a> can drive up costs, and prevent providers from entering the market to begin with.Rachidi also said that revisiting regulations around small, in-home childcare centers should be considered. She said that the assumption that grandparents are in a financial position to take time off to care for grandchildren is "crazy.""So many grandmothers are working — and working because they need to work to pay the rent and need to work to try and save some money for retirement," Adler said.She added that the "safety net in this country is the unpaid work of women." The unaffordability of childcare is a structural problem, she said, and it requires a structural solution."If all the grandmothers in the country stopped working for a year, what will we do for doctors and nurses and teachers and scientists and engineers and bank tellers and everything else?" New Delhi, Walt <keyword id="19899232" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="disney" source="keywords">Disney</keyword> CEO <keyword id="20023956" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bob-iger" source="keywords">Bob Iger</keyword> has said a joint venture with <keyword id="19936674" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="reliance" source="keywords">Reliance</keyword> Industries after merging its <keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india" source="keywords">India</keyword> business would benefit the company in terms of profit and also "derisk" its business in the Indian market. The merger deal will create a big entity and help it to stay in the market at a "significant level", said Iger at a Morgan Stanley investor conference earlier this week. "We had an opportunity to align with Reliance, which is obviously the company that has done very well there and one that we respect. And in doing so, end up owning part of a bigger media company. And we believe that, that not only should benefit us in terms of the bottom-line, but derisk us as well there," he said. Last month, Walt Disney Co. and Reliance Industries announced signing of binding pacts to merge their media operations in India. Under the deal, Reliance and its affiliates will hold 63.16 per cent and Disney will have 36.84 per cent in the JV, which will create India's leading media company that will house two streaming services and around 120 television channels. "We wanted to stay in India. We made a big investment in India when we purchased the assets of 21st Century Fox. We are one of the biggest media companies in India. But even though it is the most populous country in the world, we felt we want to be there because of that, we also know that there are challenges in that market," he said. Iger said, the merger will create a big entity and help it to stay in the market at a "significant level". "So, it's kind of the best of both worlds. We stay in the market at a significant level. We have a very good partner in Reliance, and we get to have a chance of growing a business and lowering the risk of doing so," he added. The transaction values the joint venture at Rs 70,352 crore (USD 8.5 billion) on a post-money basis, excluding synergies. Billionaire Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance has also agreed to invest at closing Rs 11,500 crore into the joint venture to give it the muscle to fight rivals such as Japan's Sony, and Netflix. Its OTT platform Disney + Hotstar has seen its paid subscriber base decline from around 55 million to 40 million in the first quarter of FY24 because of Reliance's <keyword id="19985346" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="jio-cinema" source="keywords">Jio Cinema</keyword> winning exclusive rights for live sports. The combined entity will have the largest OTT subscriber base. Disney + Hotstar was launched in India in 2020, post the acquisition of the entertainment assets of 21st Century Fox at a valuation of USD 71.3 billion, thereby taking over the operations of Star India and Hotstar. It housed entertainment and cinema channels such as StarPlus and StarGold as well as sports channels like Star Sports. While Disney + Hotstar rapidly increased its subscriber base initially with the streaming rights of cricket matches (IPL, World Cup), it lost the bid for the digital streaming rights in 2023-27 cycle, which was won by Reliance-backed Viacom18 for USD 720 billion, 12.92 per cent higher than what Star India had paid on an average per match value. Media ventures of Reliance are currently housed in Network 18, which owns TV18 news channels as well as a plethora of entertainment (under the 'Colors' brand) and sports channels. NW18 also has stakes in moneycontrol.com, bookmyshow and publishes magazines. NW18 owns news channels CNBC/CNNNews. Reliance separately owns a movie production arm - JioStudios, and majority stakes in two listed cable distribution companies, Den and <keyword id="20777796" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="hathway" source="keywords">Hathway</keyword>.
