What this basically means is that you don’t have to get the latest processors and expensive storage to get the performance of a top end laptop. You can just buy the laptop from Jio, which will likely feature an entry-level chipset. All the computing and storage will occur on the JioCloud and you will need an active internet connection to access this data, unlike traditional laptops where you can access files on your device without the need of an internet connection. “The cost of a laptop depends on its hardware like memory, processing power, chipset etc. The greater capacity of these hardware increases costs as well as battery power. What we are doing is, we are stripping all this and the whole processing of the laptop will happen at the back end in the Jio cloud,” an official familiar with the matter told ET. In addition to the cost of the laptop, the user will reportedly also be charged a monthly subscription fee to use this service. According to a MySmartPrice <a href="https://www.mysmartprice.com/gear/reliance-jiobook-geekbench-specifications-revealed/">report</a>, the JioBook has now been spotted on Geekbench, revealing some of its specifications ahead of the launch. In September, three JioBook models, NB1118QMW, NB1148QMW, and NB1112MM were spotted on the BIS certification site. The MT788 chipset is an octa-core chipset with four performance cores and four power-efficiency cores. Apart from this, the company is also expected to launch a model with the Snapdragon 665 chipset. The company is expected to launch the laptops in 2GB RAM + 32GB storage and 4GB RAM + 64GB storage variants. The JioBook is expected to support 4G LTE connectivity and come pre-loaded with Jio’s suite of apps. JioBook, a 4G-enabled budget laptop is expected to launch soon at ₹15,000

<ul><li><keyword id="131553" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Intel-Capital">Intel Capital</keyword> has invested ₹1894.5 crore ($253.5 million) in <keyword id="3820" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mukesh-Ambani">Mukesh Ambani</keyword>’s Jio Platforms for a 0.39% stake. </li><li>Most of Intel Capital’s investments in the past have focussed on artificial intelligence (AI), including edge computing, cloud technology and network transformation — going from 4G to 5G. </li><li>Intel’s expertise in consumer electronics could also come in handy for the telecom giant if it forays into the world of laptops.</li></ul>Mukesh Ambani has scored yet another investment and this time it’s the investment arm of global tech and semiconductor major Intel corporation — Intel Capital. Intel Capital has invested ₹1894.5 crore ($253.5 million) in Jio for a 0.39% stake. “This move is more strategic rather than just an investment. It’s more of a pull rather than a push strategy,” Counterpoint analyst Tushar Pathak told Business Insider. Experts believe that Intel’s investment in Jio can help Reliance across three main verticals – Artificial Intelligence, the 5G push and a possible debut of a Jio laptop. Reliance too in a statement said that “Intel Capital invests globally in innovative companies with a focus on disruptive technology areas like cloud computing, artificial intelligence and 5G – opportunities where Jio is also innovating and investing for growth.” Using Intel’s AI expertise to manage data over 500 million subscribers Bernstein’s report from June estimated that Jio would <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/news/jio-to-capture-48-market-share-by-fy25-bernstein/articleshow/76420507.cms">capture nearly half the Indian market</a> by 2025 — calling the company the ‘new king of Indian telecommunications’. It forecasts that Jio’s subscriber base will jump from its current standing at 388 million subscribers to cross 500 million by 2023 to hit 609 million by 2025. “If that happens, it’s a massive amount of data on a particular platform. That is what is exciting these investors, especially someone like Intel Capital,” said Pathak. Most of Intel Capital’s investments in the past have <a href="https://techcrunch.com/2017/09/18/intel-capital-has-invested-over-1-billion-in-companies-focused-on-ai/">focussed on artificial intelligence</a> (AI), including edge computing, cloud technology and network transformation — going from 4G to 5G. “When 500 million subscribers will interact and create a massive database, the role of AI is going to be huge for a company like Jio. A lot of their users will have a cross-platform approach,” Pathak noted. The 5G dream Reliance has been gunning for 5G and Ambani has plans to test <keyword id="6354504" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="reliance-jio">Reliance Jio</keyword>’s own 5G network in-house — if it gets the requisite approval from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT). According to Pathak, Intel’s impetus is to keep an eye on companies which have the ability to make the technological shift, something that only happens once every decade. In 2020, it’s the shift to 5G. A Jio executive wrote on <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/posts/activity-6684675263038550016-YKLP/">LinkedIn</a> that the Jio and Intel’s leadership in ORAN and OpenRan will benefit the growth and transformation of next-generation networks. ORAN and OpenRan are open source 5G software. “Intel has advanced Edge computing offerings across processors, analytics, AI and the access to this technology can help Jio Platforms engineering teams make significant pace with their 5G technology and IoT ecosystem rollouts,” said a report by <a href="https://greyhoundresearch.com/intel-will-help-jio-platforms-expedite-on-its-compute-to-cloud-vision/">Greyhound research. </a> A Jio laptop soon? Intel’s expertise in consumer electronics could also come in handy for the telecom giant. Jio had already marked its foray into the consumer electronics segment with mobiles and the partnership with Intel can help mark its debut in another segment – laptops where Intel has a majority market share. “Intel can help Jio launch computing devices (Laptops and Tablets) and accessories like cameras. Might help to note that Jio is already aggressively pursuing its ambitions to become a smart city vendor in which cameras is a key ask. Also, the company has already launched IoT cameras for homes for both Smart TV and surveillance purposes,” said the Greyhound report. However, the consumer side of things will not be the first move for Jio, believe analysts. “Their top priority will be AI, they will not be looking at the consumer side of things. It will be more in terms of the industrial Internet of Things (IoT) and other enterprise aspects,” remarked Pathak. What are the rules to apply for Jio Fiber

Revenue of telecom service providers through wireless services is likely to fall in the first quarter of FY20-21 due to the nationwide lockdown, according to a report by Emkay Global Financial Services. The report noted that the lockdown delayed recharges by low ARPU (Average Revenue Per User) prepaid subscribers on account of the reverse labour migration and impact on income levels along with curbed subscriber additions, SIM consolidation and absence of international roaming revenues. "We expect ARPU to decline sequentially in Q1FY21 after healthy growth in Q4FY20. Bharti (<keyword id="15491" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Airtel">Airtel</keyword>) and VIL (<keyword id="1553175" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vodafone-Idea">Vodafone Idea</keyword>) are likely to see 5 per cent quarter-on-quarter (qoq) fall in ARPU. Home broadband to see a healthy increase in new connections, boosted by the lockdown," it said. Subscriber addition shall moderate due to the lack of smartphone sales in April and early May, the report said adding that the reverse migration could lead to subscriber loss for the industry due to delayed or no recharges. Further, it noted that cost savings are expected from marketing, channel margins and other admin costs. Network opex shall continue to rise on increased utilisations. In case of Reliance Jio, the report said that "partial flow-through of the Dec 2019 tariff hike in Q1FY21 would get offset by lockdown-led delayed recharges, resulting in wireless revenues growth of 1 per cent qoq". Lower contribution from international roaming would also restrict ARPU for Jio as compared to peers, it said. "We project subscriber additions to be compressed at 6 million and ARPU to decline 2 per cent qoq, negatively impacted by the lockdown. Similar to Bharti and VIL, subscriber acquisition cost shall fall, leading to 114bps qoq expansion in EBITDA margin." The Android Go operating system is optimised to run with just 512 MB or 1GB RAM. The company claims that Android Go can open apps 15% faster than regular Android and comes with a data saver feature to help users consume less mobile data. Just as with Android Go, a partnership with Jio will allow Google to increase the number of users of its apps and services. KaiOS, the operating system on the Jio Phone, had beat Apple’s operating system to come in second when it was launched in 2018 — mostly due to the popularity of the Jio Phone and its budget pricing. The <keyword id="4792220" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="JioPhone">JioPhone</keyword>, Ambani's no-frills device for first-time smartphone users now has more than 100 million users. It will be a 4G phone to start with “The new version of Jio Phone, if and when it happens, we are anticipating it's unlikely to be 5G — it will likely it will be a 4G segment,” senior analyst Tarun Pathak told Business Insider. The bigger issue, however, is if these two partnerships are enough. The collaboration with Google could also put in mobile future partnerships aimed as making phone specially for the Jio network akin to the network-linked smartphones in the US. What Qualcomm may bring to the Jio smartphone The company’s JioPhone came with a Qualcomm chipset and that is likely to continue with this renewed partnership. “It remains to be seen how Jio will take on this segment, whether they’re going all out with a 4G smartphone or with Make-in-India,” senior analyst at Counterpoint Tarun Pathak told Business Insider India. How cheap will it be? To call it a “made in India” phone, Ambani has to ensure that the new Jio smartphone is not just assembled in India like in the case of Xiaomi, Apple, Samsung or OnePlus. Pathak estimates that 88% of the components needed to build a smartphone come from outside India, mostly from China. “Value-addition in India is just 12%,” said Pathak. “If you are not dependent on the Chinese you won’t be able to hit the price point which JioPhone has hit in its first iteration — like $20 or so,” said Pathak.
