"Given the factors, the USDINR pair appears to face resistance around the 84.50 level, with expectations of trading within a range of 83.80 to 84.50, leaning toward a downside bias," he said. On the global front, US Treasury Secretary nominee Scott Bessent's fiscal deficit reduction agenda capped US Treasury yields, Pabari said. The dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, was trading higher by 0.28 per cent at 107.11. TIME listed Reliance in the 'Titans' category (one of the five categories under which the companies were divided, other being Leaders, Disrupters, Innovators, and Pioneers). Tata was listed in 'Titan's' category while Serum under 'Pioneers'. "Reliance Industries was founded as a textile and polyester company 58 years ago by Dhirubhai Ambani. Today the sprawling conglomerate -- which has aligned its growth with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision for a 'self-reliant' India -- is the country's most valuable company, with a market capitalisation of more than USD 200 billion," TIME said. Now led by Dhirubhai's son Mukesh, the Mumbai-based company has ventures in energy, retail, and telecommunications, among others, and has made its chairman Asia's richest man, it said. The publication went on to stated that in February, Reliance came out on top in a fiercely competitive race to dominate India's burgeoning streaming market by striking a USD 8.5 billion merger deal with Disney's India business. "The deal will bring together more than 100 television channels and give the combined group around a 31 per cent share of India's streaming market compared to rivals Netflix and Amazon Prime with 8 per cent each," according to analytics firm Comscore. Reliance is investing USD 10 billion in building the most comprehensive ecosystem for new energy and new materials in India and has set an ambitious goal to reach net-zero carbon by 2035. TIME described Serum as the world's biggest vaccine maker, churning out billions of vaccines. The company makes 3.5 billion doses every year, including for measles, polio, and most recently, HPV. "Serum's CEO Adar Poonawalla says the company's success can largely be chalked up to its private ownership. Not being beholden to shareholders allows it to keep vaccine prices low (the R21 will cost USD 4 a shot)," the publication said. Reliance, Tata on TIME's list of world's most influential companies

<ul><li>Market is not rushing to downgrade <keyword id="17277356" type="General" weightage="90" keywordseo="jio-fin" source="Orion">Jio Fin</keyword> rivals just yet, despite its deep pockets and ability to disrupt.</li><li><keyword id="2003276" type="General" weightage="70" keywordseo="jio" source="Orion">Jio</keyword> Fin’s aggression in the unsecured loan business will decide how badly rivals will be impacted in times to come.</li><li>Given that cost of funds for JFS is expected to be significantly lower than other NBFCs, it can price its offerings much better than rivals in consumer finance. </li></ul> A behemoth was born on Monday with the listing of the financial services business of <keyword id="6355199" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="reliance-industries" source="Orion">Reliance Industries</keyword> on the exchanges. With the listing of <keyword id="15323576" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="jio-financial-services" source="Orion">Jio Financial Services</keyword>, the obvious question is the impact that this entity will have on other listed financial services players because it will take them head on. The obvious assumption is that companies that currently are in the consumer and MSME lending space will be directly impacted. Jio Fin’s rich parentage and high capital base will be its biggest advantage. The net worth of the newborn is higher than its nearest competitor and this will enable it to build a large loan book much faster. But this may not be enough to win in the marketplace as it is a total novice when it comes to underwriting and execution. The market will closely monitor Jio Fin’s aggression in the consumer finance business before downgrading its competitors. For now, the jury is out. Like all other businesses that Reliance has set foot in, even in financial services the market is expecting two things – scale and mega disruption. The first segment that Jio is set to rock first is the lending space. Jio Financial Services ahead of its listing on 18 August released some details on the structure of the company and businesses it would operate in. Jio Financial Services is not just a systemically important non-banking financial institution but also a core investment company (CIC). The RBI has mandated the conversion of Jio Fin into a CIC and NBFC over the next three months. What this essentially means is that all the other businesses will operate under this holding company as subsidiaries. In time, all the subsidiaries could also be listed. The key businesses that Jio Financial Services will be present include: Reliance Retail Finance, Reliance Retail Insurance Broking, Reliance Payment Solutions, Jio Payments Bank, the Asset Management Company will be a joint venture with Blackrock. Reliance Industrial Investments and Holdings will be the sole beneficiary of the 6.1% stake in Reliance Industries. Jio Information Aggregator Services will pursue the account aggregator business, which is yet to commence. Jio Infrastructure Management Services will offer project management services. The first segment that Jio Fin seeks to aggressively pursue is retail lending. The dominant player in this segment is Bajaj Finance, which offers small ticket loans to consumers to buy consumer durables. This business has been mastered by Bajaj Finance over the last decade and a half by tying up with stores like Vijay Sales and Croma. This is where Jio will strike first. Reliance Retail has over 550 digital stores against 517 stores owned by its two rivals Croma (387 stores) and Vijay Sales (130 stores). In merchant lending, its focus is on financing options for merchants in grocery, digital, fashion and pharma formats. According to Nomura, the focus of its MSME lending business will be better geographic penetration. Jio Fin will seek to meet the borrowing needs of small businesses that often resort to high-interest informal channels for small-ticket loans. The company will enter into secured loans in the medium term. Over a period of time Jio Fin will offer unsecured loans too. Sources in the banking industry believe that the new entrant will disrupt the sector with differentiated and cheaper offerings as it can afford to do it because of its strong capital base. The cost of funds of JFS are expected to be significantly lower than other NBFCs. According to Morgan Stanley, “The consolidated entity is starting with a capital base of Rs 114.1 bn as of March 2023 (Rs 193.5 bn ex-book value of RIL stake). If it were to allocate this capital to the lending business, this would likely result in it being among the largest NBFCs by net worth. While this implies significant capacity to lend, we will need to see the pace and mode of execution (organic/inorganic). Hence, the market will closely watch every move JioFS makes.” While the markets believe that Jio will put technology and analytics at the heart of the business, building data will take time. Also, given the competition in the sector, borrowing by consumers is high and that is also leading to higher delinquencies. Therefore, the franchise that Jio builds will matter more than the scale of the loan book. The other issue that analysts see is the capital base of the new entity. Jio Fin as a consolidated entity has a capital base of Rs 114,100 crore or Rs 1.14 trillion as of March 2023 (Rs19,350 crore ex-book value of RIL stake). According to Nomura, if Jio Fin were to allocate this capital to the lending business, this would likely result in it being among the largest NBFCs by net worth. “While this implies significant capacity to lend, we will need to see the pace and mode of execution (organic/inorganic). Hence, the market will closely watch every move JioFS makes,” the report adds.

Will Jio Fin follow the retail, telecom model and disrupt the financial services sector?

Analysts have underlined multiple times that tariff hikes by Indian telecom companies are imminent, however, that has yet to come to fruition. This is despite Bharti Airtel stating that there is a<a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/telecom/news/bharti-airtel-reports-89-yoy-increase-in-q2-net-profit-to-2145-crore/articleshow/95207348.cms"> “need for tariff correction”</a> and Vodafone Idea stressing that a<a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/telecom/news/vi-betting-on-tariff-hike-as-it-lost-over-10-million-every-day-in-q1-fy23/articleshow/93348828.cms"> tariff hike is necessary</a> before the end of 2022. Earlier, global brokerage Jefferies noted that it expects Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio to hike tariffs by 10% each in Q4 of FY23, FY24 and FY25. To be clear, Airtel has increased the price of its base plan from ₹99 to ₹155 across all the telecom circles in India – but that is the extent of price hikes so far. “A delayed tariff hike while negative for the sector, would hurt Vi’s survival hopes the most, and could effectively lead to a duopoly, likely resulting in accelerated market share gains for Bharti and Reliance Jio,” said a report by Kotak Institutional Equities. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Vodafone Idea: Caught between a rock and a hard place" comment="subhead" text="Vodafone Idea: Caught between a rock and a hard place">Vodafone Idea: Caught between a rock and a hard place</cmsannotation> Jio is on the offensive on multiple fronts to attract premium subscribers – including 5G, postpaid segment, and now pay TV via its ₹198 broadband plan. With tariff hikes and 5G monetization on the back burner, Vodafone Idea is caught between a rock and a hard place. With a subscriber loss of over 5.3 million between October and December 2022, 5G launch still not being on the horizon, and the lack of a fundraise so far, would hurt Vodafone Idea’s survival the most. “Vodafone Idea (Vi) stares at a cash shortfall of ₹5,500 crore over the next 12 months and a delay in tariff hike/fund-raise; this could lead to Vi shutting shop and accelerated market share gains for Reliance Jio and Bharti,” said the Kotak report. If Vodafone Idea unilaterally increases tariffs, it risks accelerating subscriber loss. These premium subscribers can be of two types – those with a postpaid account, and those who consume a lot of data. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Jio’s postpaid push" comment="subhead" text="Jio’s postpaid push">Jio’s postpaid push</cmsannotation> In the first case, Jio’s latest postpaid offerings give users 75-100GB of high speed 4G data, with plans starting at ₹399 per month, with ₹99 additional charge per user. “The new family postpaid plans effectively cap the customer outgo at ₹205-235 per month and provide an arbitrage for higher-end prepaid subscribers to move to family postpaid [plans] to reduce their outgo per connection,” said a report by Kotak Institutional Equities. While both Airtel and Jio are not charging anything extra for 5G services yet, unlimited data is a ploy to get users hooked onto 5G speeds which have touched as much as 1.5Gbps in some cases. “We believe there is greater uncertainty on tariff hikes in the near term given that large capacity creation with 5G will shift focus on boosting utilization,” said a Jefferies report. Both Airtel and Jio are in a race to expand their 5G coverage – after trailing Jio for several weeks, Airtel now has 5G in over 500 cities, while <keyword id="6668253" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="jio-5g" source="Orion">Jio 5G</keyword> is available in 406 cities. In sharp contrast, Vodafone Idea is yet to launch its 5G services, and since Airtel and Jio went live with 5G services in October, the telco has lost over 5.3 million subscribers. According to the analysts at Kotak, multiple state elections and the 2024 general elections could force telcos to push back tariff hikes, and also give them enough time to build out their 5G coverage across the country. However, the analysts at ICICI Securities think it could actually disrupt cable TV providers, as well as Airtel’s direct-to-home (DTH) business. “We believe the new plan is targeted at cable user who has seen significant rise in cable bills and drop in the number of channels. The new plan by Reliance Jio will offer more content (OTT + live TV) and fixed broadband data at largely pay TV prices,” said a report by ICICI Securities, adding that IPL 2023, which will be streamed for free via the JioCinema app will help boost the adoption of Jio’s ₹198 broadband plan. According to the analysts at JP Morgan, this new plan will help the company expand the total addressable market of fixed broadband market, which currently stands at just 30 million. For comparison, the cable/DTH market has 110-130 million customers, according to the ICICI Securities report. “Jio is playing offence as it pivots to a focus on premium subscribers. We expect this disruptive innovation at the bottom of the market to put pressure on Bharti,” the JP Morgan report said. For now, Vodafone Idea will have to figure out a way to stem its subscriber loss and prevent further erosion of its market share. Launch of 5G services and aggressively expanding its coverage in key circles should help the telco. It remains to be seen if it comes to fruition or not, though. In its latest report, the brokerage says that Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio are expected to announce 10% <keyword id="891186" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tariff-hikes" source="Orion">tariff hikes</keyword> in Q4 of FY23, FY24, and FY25. Most of the benefits of the last tariff hike have already flown to the telcos and their revenue and margins are increasingly under pressure. This necessitates a tariff hike by telcos, analysts say. For the September quarter, Airtel, Vodafone Idea and Jio reported moderate gains in average revenue per user (ARPU), a key metric to measure a telecom company’s performance. While Jio’s ARPU <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/telecom/news/reliance-jio-reports-4-profit-growth-in-q2-subscriber-addition-arpu-growth-slows-down/articleshow/95017181.cms">increased 0.8%</a> sequentially, Vodafone Idea <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/telecom/news/vodafone-ideas-q2-loss-widens-to-7596-crore/articleshow/95282354.cms">reported</a> a 1% increase. Airtel, on the other hand, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/telecom/news/bharti-airtel-reports-89-yoy-increase-in-q2-net-profit-to-2145-crore/articleshow/95207348.cms">reported</a> a 4% increase due to premiumisation. Earlier this year, Airtel started testing the waters of tariff hikes by withdrawing the ₹99 pack in select circles. Analysts at Jefferies believe tariff hike strategy fits perfectly with the<a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/corporates/news/5g-rollout-to-give-business-a-fillip-says-airtel-ceo-gopal-vittal/articleshow/95230944.cms"> telco’s rural expansion plans</a>, which is likely to hurt margins further. Airtel’s EBITDA margin in Q2 fell to 36.9% from 43.7% in Q1. The company’s CEO Gopal Vittal had earlier in November said over 40% of industry 4G net additions were coming from rural areas and he believed “the time is right to bridge a substantial part of the coverage gap in mobile against the leading player in the industry.” Keeping these factors in mind, analysts at Jefferies have maintained their tariff hike outlook. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Subscriber churn rises as subscribers shop for better plans" comment="subhead" text="Subscriber churn rises as subscribers shop for better plans">Subscriber churn rises as subscribers shop for better plans</cmsannotation> Analysts at Jefferies also said that an increase in subscriber churn and mobile number portability (MNP) requests pointed to increasing competition in the Indian telecom sector. Subscriber churn refers to the rate at which subscribers stop paying for services to the company. This has the adverse effect of dragging the margins down. “The rise in MNP requests over the past five months implies increasing competition for subscribers in the market. This is also evident from the higher churn levels seen during Q2 FY23 across telcos,” said the Jefferies report. According to the telecom subscriber data for October 2022 released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), Jio and Airtel together added 2.2 million new subscribers. On the other hand, Vodafone Idea’s struggles continued, with its subscriber count declining by 3.5 million. At the same time, the number of MNP requests in October surged to 11.81 million – close to September’s 11.97 million, which is the highest in 2022 – even as the total number of active subscribers remained stagnant at 1.01 billion. In their Q2 FY23 earnings, telcos Airtel and Vodafone Idea reported an increase in subscriber churn, while their rival Jio witnessed a decline. While Airtel’s subscriber churn stood at 3.3% in Q2 FY23, Vodafone Idea reported a significantly higher churn at 4.3%. On the other hand, Jio reported a churn of just 2%. Overall, the telecom industry’s subscriber churn increased to 3% in Q2 FY23 from 2.7% in Q1.
