China's growth rate is projected to slack further to 4.3% in 2025, down from its present rate of 4.8%. The <keyword id="19916574" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="OECD" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="OECD" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="OECD">OECD</keyword> also expects the country's growth to slow down to 4.5% in 2025 Experts believe that the recent economic push by the government, which includes lowering reserve requirement ratio (RRR) by 0.5% to 6.6%, lowering mortgage rates, injecting $142 billion into banks, among others, are too little to sustain long-term recovery. Notably, lowering RRR frees up $140 billion for banks to lend, while reducing mortgages and minimum down payments for housing purchases are directed to spur up the Chinese real estate segment. Per <keyword id="19906485" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Goldman-Sachs" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Goldman Sachs" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Goldman Sachs">Goldman Sachs</keyword>, weak domestic demand, dwindling consumer confidence and spending and an endless real-estate crisis are some of the main reasons for the slowdown.The average Chinese citizen still grapples with job insecurity, stagnant salaries, and depreciating real estate and equity values. For instance, China's last public holiday of the year, the Golden Week, which ended on October 7 and commemorates the nation's founding, saw 2% less spending per domestic trip, as compared to pre-pandemic levels. "Low tourism spending per head and subdued services prices highlight the still weak domestic demand and continued consumption downgrading in the country,” the analysts at GS noted. <h2>Its all temporary</h2>The <keyword id="21360606" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hang-Seng-index" source="keywords">Hang Seng index</keyword>, which is up by 4.22% today, has been seeing a meteoric rise over the past few weeks. Inching up by a little over 24% over the last month, the Chinese markets have been seeing an significant influx of foreign investment, largely at the expense of other emerging markets like India. Foreign investors had offloaded shares worth Rs 27,142 crore between the first and third of this month, after foreign investments reached a staggering record-high of Rs 93,538 crore in September, as per NSDL data. Over the last 10 days, FIIs have constantly been net sellers, while DIIs have been net buyers. As of October 10th, DII (Domestic Institutional Investors) have put in Rs 50,183 crores in Indian markets, almost balancing out Rs 49,305.29 crore withdrawn by foreign investors. But whether this trend of FII inflow in China continues will largely depend on the fundamentals their economy, an area where India has an edge, thanks to strong confidence of domestic investors. Viram Shah, CEO of Vested Finance highlights that while the Hang Seng index's recent 26% surge over the last month has caught investors' attention, and while this bullish trend is expected to continue, driven by low Chinese stock valuations and hopes for economic improvement from government stimulus, there lies a long road ahead. "Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs) pulled out $5.4 billion from Indian equities over five consecutive sessions, ending Monday, October 7. While this suggests a possible rotation of funds from India to China, how long this shift will last will depend on the Chinese government’s ability to resolve the structural economic issues. While the market rally is encouraging, more policy steps are needed to boost economic activity and confidence in China", he added.

Tensions in Middle-East are rapidly inching closer to their zenith, with Iran firing about 200 ballistic missiles at Israel late yesterday night. Broader indices also fell, losing nearly 2% each. The Hang Seng index, which had rallied over 14% during the last week, largely on the back of various stimulus measures announced by the central bank to stir consumption in the Chinese economy, also slumped around 1.47%. With the possibility of an all-out war between Iran and Israel looming on the horizon, threatening to happen sooner than later, markets are expected to remain volatile in near future. Even the India VIX, seen as a gauge of uncertainty and investor fear in the market, jumped over 9% during the day. The war could throw a huge spanner on India's crude oil import plans. As of August 2024, about 44.6% of India's crude oil imports came from <keyword id="19904316" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="middle-east" source="keywords">Middle East</keyword>. Israel has already promised significant retaliation, in response to Iran's attack in the days to come. And the strong possibility of a full-blown Israeli attack in Middle East, particularly major oil fields in Iran has sent the crude oil prices surging. Closer home, ONGC (Oil and Natural Gas Corporation) was amongst the biggest gainers on NSE today. <h2>Should Indian investors worry? </h2>But is the impending action in Middle-East the only reason behind today's drastic fall? Vishnu Kant Upadhyay, AVP, Research &amp; Advisory at Master Capital Services notes that while it plays a significant role, other factors are also at play. "Recent regulatory changes in the F&amp;O segment by SEBI is expected to impact trading volumes, as retail participation may decline due to the increased contract size and limits on weekly expiries. Meanwhile, strength in the Chinese market, following the People’s Bank of China (PBoC) stimulus package, has also diverted foreign investment to China, where valuations remain more attractive compared to India", he noted. But Upadhyay believes that the extension of losses in Indian markets wont last long. "From a technical perspective, as long as prices hold above the 25,250–25,100 zone, any decline could present an opportunity to build fresh long positions. A stock-specific approach is advisable, with sectors such as Oil, IT, PSU Banks, Metals, and Chemicals likely to outperform in the coming days", he adds. Shrikant Chouhan, Head Equity Research, Kotak Securities observes that as long as market is trading below 25,365/82,800, the weak sentiment is likely to continue. On the down side, it could slip till 25,150-25,025/82,200-82,000 as well. On the other side, one quick technical pullback is likely if the market succeeds to trade above 25,365/82,800. Above the same, it could bounce back till 25,475-25,500/83,100-83,300. The minimum investment amount for the NFO will be ₹500 and in multiples of ₹1 for purchases and ₹0.1 for switching. The redemption amount has been set at a minimum of ₹500 and in multiples of ₹1 thereafter. “The investment goal of the Nifty Non-Cyclical Consumer Index Fund is to generate long-term capital growth by investing in securities of the Nifty Non-Cyclical Consumer Index (TRI) in the same proportion/weightage to offer returns before expenses that track the total return of the Nifty Non-Cyclical Consumer Index, subject to tracking errors,” Groww said in a statement. Groww receives SEBI approval to launch Nifty non-cyclical consumer index fund

<ul><li>Market is not rushing to downgrade <keyword id="17277356" type="General" weightage="90" keywordseo="jio-fin" source="Orion">Jio Fin</keyword> rivals just yet, despite its deep pockets and ability to disrupt.</li><li><keyword id="2003276" type="General" weightage="70" keywordseo="jio" source="Orion">Jio</keyword> Fin’s aggression in the unsecured loan business will decide how badly rivals will be impacted in times to come.</li><li>Given that cost of funds for JFS is expected to be significantly lower than other NBFCs, it can price its offerings much better than rivals in consumer finance. </li></ul> A behemoth was born on Monday with the listing of the financial services business of <keyword id="6355199" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="reliance-industries" source="Orion">Reliance Industries</keyword> on the exchanges. With the listing of <keyword id="15323576" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="jio-financial-services" source="Orion">Jio Financial Services</keyword>, the obvious question is the impact that this entity will have on other listed financial services players because it will take them head on. The obvious assumption is that companies that currently are in the consumer and MSME lending space will be directly impacted. Jio Fin’s rich parentage and high capital base will be its biggest advantage. The net worth of the newborn is higher than its nearest competitor and this will enable it to build a large loan book much faster. But this may not be enough to win in the marketplace as it is a total novice when it comes to underwriting and execution. The market will closely monitor Jio Fin’s aggression in the consumer finance business before downgrading its competitors. For now, the jury is out. Like all other businesses that Reliance has set foot in, even in financial services the market is expecting two things – scale and mega disruption. The first segment that Jio is set to rock first is the lending space. Jio Financial Services ahead of its listing on 18 August released some details on the structure of the company and businesses it would operate in. Jio Financial Services is not just a systemically important non-banking financial institution but also a core investment company (CIC). The RBI has mandated the conversion of Jio Fin into a CIC and NBFC over the next three months. What this essentially means is that all the other businesses will operate under this holding company as subsidiaries. In time, all the subsidiaries could also be listed. The key businesses that Jio Financial Services will be present include: Reliance Retail Finance, Reliance Retail Insurance Broking, Reliance Payment Solutions, Jio Payments Bank, the Asset Management Company will be a joint venture with Blackrock. Reliance Industrial Investments and Holdings will be the sole beneficiary of the 6.1% stake in Reliance Industries. Jio Information Aggregator Services will pursue the account aggregator business, which is yet to commence. Jio Infrastructure Management Services will offer project management services. The first segment that Jio Fin seeks to aggressively pursue is retail lending. The dominant player in this segment is Bajaj Finance, which offers small ticket loans to consumers to buy consumer durables. This business has been mastered by Bajaj Finance over the last decade and a half by tying up with stores like Vijay Sales and Croma. This is where Jio will strike first. Reliance Retail has over 550 digital stores against 517 stores owned by its two rivals Croma (387 stores) and Vijay Sales (130 stores). In merchant lending, its focus is on financing options for merchants in grocery, digital, fashion and pharma formats. According to Nomura, the focus of its MSME lending business will be better geographic penetration. Jio Fin will seek to meet the borrowing needs of small businesses that often resort to high-interest informal channels for small-ticket loans. The company will enter into secured loans in the medium term. Over a period of time Jio Fin will offer unsecured loans too. Sources in the banking industry believe that the new entrant will disrupt the sector with differentiated and cheaper offerings as it can afford to do it because of its strong capital base. The cost of funds of JFS are expected to be significantly lower than other NBFCs. According to Morgan Stanley, “The consolidated entity is starting with a capital base of Rs 114.1 bn as of March 2023 (Rs 193.5 bn ex-book value of RIL stake). If it were to allocate this capital to the lending business, this would likely result in it being among the largest NBFCs by net worth. While this implies significant capacity to lend, we will need to see the pace and mode of execution (organic/inorganic). Hence, the market will closely watch every move JioFS makes.” While the markets believe that Jio will put technology and analytics at the heart of the business, building data will take time. Also, given the competition in the sector, borrowing by consumers is high and that is also leading to higher delinquencies. Therefore, the franchise that Jio builds will matter more than the scale of the loan book. The other issue that analysts see is the capital base of the new entity. Jio Fin as a consolidated entity has a capital base of Rs 114,100 crore or Rs 1.14 trillion as of March 2023 (Rs19,350 crore ex-book value of RIL stake). According to Nomura, if Jio Fin were to allocate this capital to the lending business, this would likely result in it being among the largest NBFCs by net worth. “While this implies significant capacity to lend, we will need to see the pace and mode of execution (organic/inorganic). Hence, the market will closely watch every move JioFS makes,” the report adds.

After hitting a fresh 52-week low in March this year, RIL shares are still down over 10% in 2023. The JFS demerger could be just what the parent’s shares need – value unlocking. The JFS demerger is expected to act as a catalyst that the parent Reliance Industries has been missing. “The listing and value unlocking from RIL’s financial services business in the coming months will be a key event for the stock,” said Nomura in its latest note, adding that the decline in Reliance’s shares is due to “index-related sell-off”. According to the terms of the demerger announced in October last year, all existing shareholders of Reliance Industries will get one share in JFS for each share held in the parent company. The company has now <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/corporates/news/ril-calls-for-shareholder-creditor-meeting-to-approve-demerger-of-financial-services-arm/articleshow/99116790.cms">called</a> for a meeting of creditors and shareholders on May 2 for the requisite approvals. JFS is expected to list in September this year. “As JFS scales up, it can drive value unlocking given higher multiples for peers in these industries,” Nomura said. Jefferies has pegged the valuation of JFS in the range of ₹90,000 crore to ₹1.5 lakh crore, with each share of JFS valued at ₹179 in the brokerage’s base case scenario. Demerger to help JFS ‘dominate’ the industry Looking beyond the benefits for RIL’s shares, the JFS demerger will also help the financial services business attract investors and challenge existing players in the sector like Bajaj Finance and Paytm. “The demerger would help the financial services business to attract different sets of investors, strategic partners and lenders having specific interests in the financial services business,” Nomura added. Previously, LTCG on long-term capital gains was marked at 20%, but it came with indexation benefits, which eventually lowered the individual's overall <keyword id="19974193" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tax-liability" source="keywords">tax liability</keyword>. Now, it has been lowered to 12.5%, but minus any indexation benefit. So, with indexation gone, how will gains from property sales be taxed going ahead? Is this applicable to all properties? What is set to change? Does it help that the <keyword id="22480102" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="LTCG-tax" source="keywords">LTCG tax</keyword> has been brought down from 20% to 12.5%? Lets take a deep-dive First, explain this long term short-term conundrum to me So, how much capital gains tax you're supposed to pay depends on how long you hold a particular asset before selling it. Prior to yesterday's announcement, there were 3 holding periods which determined whether an asset was held for long-term or short-term: The situation before- <ul><li>Shares, units of mutual funds would qualify for LTCG tax, if they are held for more than 12 months. If the holding period is less than 1 year, you'd have to pay short-term capital gains (STCG).</li><li>Real estate and immovable property would qualify for LTCG tax, if held for more than 24 months (2 years), along with indexation benefit. </li><li>Bonds, debentures and gold were to be considered long-term capital assets, if they were held for more than 36 months (3 years), with indexation benefit. </li></ul>But going ahead, there will only be two waiting periods which will determine whether an asset would be classified as long-term or short-term The situation now- <ul><li>For all listed securities (stocks, mutual fund units), the holding period for LTCG tax purposes would be more than 1 year (sans indexation benefits) All other assets (real estate, gold, bond, debentures) will qualify for LTCG tax, if they are held for more than 24 months (minus indexation benefits). </li></ul>What was the taxation situation earlier on long-term capital gains? What has changed? So, lets say Tara purchased a property in FY 2004-05 for Rs 20,00,000. In FY 2024-25, she decided to sell it for Rs 60,00,000. You'd think she'll have to pay a flat 20% on Rs 40,00,000, which was her total profit earned from selling her property (Rs 60,00,000-20,00,000). But this is where indexation swooped in and helped cushion the overall tax liability. Prior to July 23rd, 2024, the government considered something known as "indexed cost of acquisition" for determining an individuals' total LTCG tax liability, which was calculated using the following formula: [Cost Inflation Index (CII)value for transfer/sale year/CII for purchase year, or 2001-02 (whichever is later) X cost of acquisition]. Thankfully, you don't have to go about calculating this CII value, since the government does this for you, and notifies the same officially. What CII essentially does is that it compares the current prices of basket A(which contains a bunch of products and services) to the price of the same basket A in the year of comparison, to reflect the change in prices caused by inflation. So, for Tara, her indexed cost of acquisition would come down to Rs 64,24,778 [363(CII for 2024-25) /113(CII for 2004-05)X 20,00,000]. This would mean she incurred a capital loss of Rs 4,24,778, since her indexed cost of acquisition is more than her sales receipts. So, she does not need to pay any LTCG tax. She can set off this loss, but only against her other long term gains with a limit of Rs 2 lakh in one financial year, and can carry forward the same for a maximum of 8 years. However, this changed when the budget memorandum noted yesterday, "indexation available under the second proviso to section 48 is proposed to be removed for calculation of any long-term capital gains which is presently available for property, gold, and other unlisted assets. This will ease the computation of capital gains for the taxpayer and the tax administration". This means that indexation benefits on LTCG will be applicable starting July 23rd, 2024. To understand its impact, assume that this rule is in effect from April 1, 2024. In that case, Tara's LTCG will be a flat 12.5% of her total gains of Rs 38,75,000 (remember, Rs 1,25,000 per year on LTCG are tax-exempt). This would bring Tara's taxability to Rs 4,84,375 Long story, short, minus the indexation benefit, Tara will have to pay Rs 4,84,375 as long-term capital gains tax. However, there has been a slight increase in the basic tax exemption limit for LTCG. Previously, LTCG of up to Rs 1,00,000 in a single financial year was tax-free. But now, this threshold has been raised to Rs 1,25,000. Yes, roll-over benefits continue without change. This means you can re-invest the proceeds from sale of your old property into buying a new, residential one, in order to avoid capital gains tax. But that too, is not without its share of catches: You can reinvest these funds in either 54EC bonds, which have a maximum annual investment limit of Rs 50,00,000. Or, you can avail this exemption for a maximum of 2 residential houses, provided your capital gains are limited to Rs 2 crore. Also, if you've it purchased a property, or held from before 2001, you can continue to avail indexation benefits, thanks to something called a grandfathering clause. Does indexation or lower tax rates work better? There's no general rule here. But a cursory look indicates that high capital gains would be favorably taxed under these reduced tax rates, while lower returns and holding periods would find indexation to be a better option. Says Pankaj Kumar, VP – Fundamental Research, Kotak Securities, "the Union Budget-FY25 has rationalized long-term capital gains tax on real estate transaction. It proposed to remove indexation benefits and reduce the long term capital gains tax rate from 20% to 12.5% with immediate effect (grandfathering for properties held before 2001). We find that the new capital gains tax structure for real estate favours investors, who have generated high IRRs, while investors with poor IRRs would be worse off in the new regime". "On the other hand, it is expected to have limited impact on end users who purchase homes for personal consumption. The budget has also talked about encouraging states to lower the stamp duty and consider lower duties for women buyers. Lowering of stamp duties would reduce the overall acquisition cost in high stamp duty states/markets like Gurgaon, Chennai, Mumbai and Kolkata", continued Kumar.
