According to the report, BSNL added over 2.94 million mobile subscribers in July. Bharti Airtel lost 1.69 million mobile subscribers which was highest among its peers. Vodafone Idea and Reliance Jio lost 1.41 million and 758,000 mobile subscribers, respectively. Overall, the telecom subscriber base in the country declined marginally to 1,205.17 million in July from 1,205.64 million in June. North East, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Mumbai, Kolkata, Tamil Nadu, Punjab, Bihar, West Bengal, UP East, Haryana, Andhra Pradesh telecom circles recorded decline in mobile customer base post the hike in mobile services rates. The wireline or the fixed line connections segment increased by about 1% to 35.56 million in July from 35.11 million in June. Reliance Jio led the fixed-line segment with addition of over 480,000 new subscribers. It was followed by Bharti Airtel which added over 136,000 new subscribers, VMIPL 12,413, Vi 11,375, Tata Teleservices 3,971 and Quadrant added 12 new fixed line customers. BSNL was the biggest loser in the segment. The state-run firm lost 134,000 fixed line customers and its sister concern lost 56,454 customers. The broadband customer base in the country increased to 946.19 million at the end of July from 940.75 million in June. Top five players accounted for 98.42% of total broadband connection in the country. Reliance Jio led the chart with 488.63 million <keyword id="23252277" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="broadband-customers" source="keywords">broadband customers</keyword>, Airtel with 284.03 million, Vodafone Idea with 126.72 million, BSNL with 29.61 million and Atria Convergence with 2.26 million. Bharti Airtel has launched two plans, which include unlimited data for 2 days against a payment of Rs 99 and 6GB of additional data with 1-day validity for Rs 49. On the other hand, Jio has rolled out monthly, quarterly and annual plans bundled with data, unlimited voice, and subscription to Disney+ Hotstar mobile. Jio's basic plan is priced at Rs 328 and comes with 1.5 GB high-speed data per day for 28 days and a 3-month Disney+ Hotstar mobile subscription. In addition, Jio has also introduced a Rs 758 plan, which offers 1.5 GB of high-speed data per day for 84 days and comes with a 3-month Disney+ Hotstar mobile subscription. Similarly, plans priced at Rs 388 and Rs 808 offer 2 GB of high-speed data per day for 28 and 84 days, respectively, and come with 3 months of Disney+ Hotstar mobile subscription. In addition, the 84-day Rs 598 plan and the annual Rs 3,178 plan offer users one year of Disney+ Hotstar mobile subscription and 2GB high-speed data per day. With the Disney+ Hotstar bundled plans, Jio users will also get access to Disney+ Hotstar's library of specials, and national and international content, as per the company's website.

The Premium Lite plan could cost $8.99 per month, nearly 50% cheaper than the regular Premium subscription, which is priced at $16.99. However, it comes with limitations, including fewer ad-free features and restricted access to <keyword id="19912392" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="YouTube-Music" source="keywords">YouTube Music</keyword> and background play. Currently being tested in select markets like Germany, Thailand, and Australia, YouTube Premium Lite aims to strike a balance for users who want an ad-reduced experience without paying for the full Premium perks. However, student-loan forgiveness through the plan is still blocked.On June 30, Biden's Education Department filed a request to stay the Kansas district court's recent decision to block key parts of the S<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/student-loan-forgiveness-blocked-lower-monthly-payments-save-plan-courts-2024-6">AVE income-driven repayment plan</a>, like lower monthly payments for undergraduates, to be implemented in July.It's a result of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gop-states-lawsuit-block-save-student-loan-income-driven-repayment-2024-4">two separate lawsuits</a> filed by GOP state attorneys general <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/student-loan-forgiveness-blocked-save-plan-lawsuit-gop-attorneys-general-2024-3">to block parts of SAVE</a>. Along with the Kansas court's decision, a Missouri judge ruled that the forgiveness promised through the plan is blocked, as well, as the legal process progresses.The 10th Circuit Court of Appeals granted the Education Department's request the same day it was filed, ruling that Kansas' preliminary injunction on the SAVE plan is stayed pending the appeal.Education Secretary Miguel Cardona said in a statement that the 10th Circuit "sided with student loan borrowers across the country who stand to benefit from the SAVE Plan – the most affordable repayment plan in history.""Borrowers will hear directly from their loan servicers and the Department as we implement the new, lower monthly payments for borrowers enrolled in SAVE," he said.This means that for now, the Education Department can continue working to implement the new SAVE provisions set to go into effect this July. The department said that it has directed servicers to move forward with the new repayment provisions.Additionally, per the department, if borrowers received a bill from their servicers with a lower monthly payment for July, they should plan to make that payment. If a borrower was placed on forbearance prior to the court rulings due to repayment recalculations, their first lower monthly payment will be due in August.The Education Department <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/save-plan-student-loan-forgiveness-blocked-borrowers-forbearance-payments-paused-2024-6">paused payments for 3 million borrowers</a> last week in light of the rulings. In Monday's guidance, the department said that those borrowers would also remain in forbearance in July, with their first payment due in August.While the stay is a win for Biden's administration, it'll likely add further confusion for borrowers on SAVE who are struggling to understand what these legal challenges mean. The department removed online applications for income-driven repayment plans to avoid misinformation as these legal challenges progress last week, but in light of the stay, the department is now working to restore access to the online applications.Some advocates and Democratic lawmakers have previously criticized the lawsuits for the confusion and financial burden they've caused borrowers — Persis Yu, executive director of the advocacy group Student Borrower Protection Center, previously said in a statement that the lawsuits are "imperiling the financial security of millions and throwing the student loan system into an untenable chaos."Despite the stay on the Kansas court's decision, the Missouri court ruled the SAVE plan provision to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/student-loan-forgiveness-debt-cancellation-save-income-driven-payment-plan-2024-2">cancel student debt for borrowers</a> with original balances of $12,000 or lower after making as few as 10 years of payments is still blocked.The Justice Department will appeal that decision, as well, with an Education Department spokesperson saying a recent staying that the administration "will not stop vigorously defending the SAVE Plan, the most affordable repayment plan in history, and will continue to fight for this long-overdue relief, no matter how many times Republican elected officials and their allies try to stop them."Editor's note: This story was updated after publication to include a comment from the Education Department.
