The index shows an improvement to 56.4 from 53.9 in 2021 across indices like access, usage and equality. Essentially, it tracks how well the financial services have been extended to the unbanked population of the country. The index ranges between 0 and 100, with 0 meaning complete financial exclusion and 100 meaning complete financial inclusion. RBI tracks 97 indicators and divides them into three sub-indices – access, usage and equality – with weights of 35, 45, and 20, respectively. The index covers banking, investment, insurance, postal and pension sectors, tracking their delivery and usage amongst the population. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="What does financial inclusion mean?" comment="subhead" text="What does financial inclusion mean?">What does financial inclusion mean?</cmsannotation> At its very core, financial inclusion means access to banks, ATMs, banking executives, point of sales terminals and transacting online, via UPI, cards, net banking and other modes. Essentially, financial inclusion should result in people being able to access financial services without any hindrance. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="What does the financial inclusion index mean?" comment="subhead" text="What does the financial inclusion index mean?">What does the financial inclusion index mean?</cmsannotation> As the name suggests, the index tracks whether the government is able to deliver financial products equally amongst the population and how usable those products are. Making a product available and accessible to everyone with an equal opportunity does not mean it is usable in the same way by different sections of the society. This is also why the ‘usage’ index carries nearly half the weight of the total index. At 56.4, RBI and the Indian government have their task cut out. While financial products are largely accessible – the access sub-index stood at 73.3 – the usage and equality indices have dragged down the overall index, meaning vulnerable groups and weaker sections of the society are still unable to use banking, credit and other services. The JAM trinity – <keyword id="2494045" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="jan-dhan" source="Orion">Jan Dhan</keyword>, Aadhaar, and Mobile – have enabled the Indian government to improve financial inclusion from 43.4 in 2017 to 56.4 in 2022. Although RBI released the first results in 2021, it has released its calculations from 2017 onwards. The government launched the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana in August 2014, allowing unbanked people to open no-frills zero balance accounts. Till date, 308.4 million such accounts have been opened under PMJDY. RBI says it expects to release the FI Index data every year in July.  This is the newest plan from Jio and yet another quest to hold on tight to the over 100 million subscribers that the 4G player has been able to pull in with the longest running free trial that started from 5th of September. Right after the ‘Happy New Year’ plan ended on 31st of March, Jio announced its Summer Surprise tariff plan for the Jio Prime Members which was essentially free services till July with Just Rs. 303, but Jio had to discontinue the plan as the telecom regulator <keyword id="6356988" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="TRAI">TRAI</keyword> intervened in the matter and ordered Jio to stop the free services. Jio Prime Members can avail unlimited services for 3 months with Rs. 399 Plan. The earlier launched Rs 309 plan for prime members will now provide 2 months of unlimited Jio services. The prepaid plans of Rs 309, Rs 349 and Rs 509 will have validity of 56 days. Mukesh Ambani made it clear in his AGM speech that he is looking to capture the feature phone market of India with his new phone, reason why the new phone is specifically designed for the ‘feature phone’ market of India. The device comes with 2.4-inch display with QVGA display, microSD card slot, torchlight, FM radio, supports voice commands in 22 Indian languages, has a panic button and comes with advanced NFC support for digital payments. With Jio aiming to deliver 5 million units every week to consumers across the country, low-end smartphone companies like Intex, Micromax, Lava will have to match up to the new Jio phone that will be sold for Rs. 1500 which will be refunded at the end of three years. The Low-end manufacturers are certain to feel the Jio heat and it may not be limited to the low end device manufacturers but also companies selling smartphones under Rs. 5000. Jio’s new phone is packaged in a way that makes it the perfect device to introduce both smartphone and 4G network to the feature phone market of the country. 
 
DTH Market The DTH industry in India is already trying to keep up with internet video services like <keyword id="128682" type="TOPIC" weightage="20" keywordseo="Netflix">Netflix</keyword>, Hotstar, Voot and many others, now the sector needs to watch out for the disruption from Jio Phone. Jio phone will come pre-loaded with all Jio apps including Jio TV, Jio Cinema, Jio Music etc making the phone an all in one entertainment device, meaning Jio Phone can very easily turn into a DTH device in itself by simply topping up for Rs. 309 per month. It’s also important to note that Mukesh Ambani specially talked about one key accessory with the phone during the Jio Phone announcement, he said that Jio phone will come with "<keyword id="4964079" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="jio-phone-tv-cable">Jio Phone TV-Cable</keyword>" that will allow users to connect their phones to TV, even the ‘non-smart’ TVs. This attachment with the phone is a clear hint that Jio wants the new phone to be an overall entertainment device and not just a phone. And streaming entertainment from phone and blasting it on to TV could potentially be a better deal as it will free the users from setting up expensive hardware and paying costly monthly charges. 
 
As we get closer to the launch date, all these industries will have to get back to their drawing boards and create products that can give a tough fight to the latest from Reliance Jio, the Jio phone. Within a year, Jio has managed to add 125 million subscribers to its network and according to analysts, Reliance Jio with get its next 100 million users from its new feature phone.

Small device, big impact: "Jio Phone to shake up many industries apart from telecom"

This is going to disrupt the smartphone market. Ambani said they plan to collect refundable deposit of Rs 1500 from users to protect misuse of the free offer. A JioPhone user can use the phone for 36 months and get back the deposit amount. “Today, Jio is going to reinvent the conventional feature phone. Let me introduce India ka Intelligent SmartPhone-JioPhone,” announced Ambani. "We plan to collect a fully refundable, one-time, security deposit of Rs 1,500 with everyone. From 15th August, 2017, all Indians will have access to the highest quality &amp; quantity, affordable &amp; unlimited data," said Ambani, adding "This is how Jio will end the digital exclusion in India. And this is what I call true digital freedom." The JioPhone will be available from September and the pre-booking will start from August 24. "The JioPhone will be available for user testing in beta from 15th August and for pre-booking from 24th August," said Ambani. Starting August 15, JioPhone will give users unlimited data to feature phone users. JioPhone will have <keyword id="4405573" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="jio-dhan-dhana-dhan">Jio Dhan Dhana Dhan</keyword> plan at Rs 153. In order to fit every pocket, Mukesh Ambani introduced two sachets, launching weekly plans. "If these users were to consume a similar quantity of data on other operator's network, they would spend Rs 4,000 – 5,000 per month. Jio will provide this at only Rs 153 per month, that is one-thirtieth, 3% of the existing price," said Ambani. Ambani dedicated the JioPhone to the nation and said digital life will no longer be the privilege of the affluent few. "JioPhone will make the 2G feature phone obsolete. With this, I am sure Jio will set a new world record. From last quarter of 2017, all Jio phones will be made in India. We are targeting to have 5 million Jio Phones a week," said Ambani. JioPhone is a ‘Made in India’ 4G VoLTE enabled smartphone and is designed to be easy and friendly. The JioPhone supports all Indian languages. Voice calls from JioPhone will be free and 50 crore feature phone users don't have access to basic internet. Today, every young India should have information access at his fingertips and this is what JioPhone will enable," said Ambani. He said the digital disempowerment and unfairness must end and Jio is committed to end it. "We shall achieve this in three ways – Connectivity, Data Affordability and Device Affordability," said Ambani.

The launch could coincide with <keyword id="6355199" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Reliance-Industries">Reliance Industries</keyword>' annual general meeting on July 21. It would probably follow Jio's new tariff plan with aggressive price-points that is expected to happen in a couple of days, now that the Dhan Dhana Dhan offer is about to close. Rajiv Sharma, HSBC director and telecoms analyst, said in a note that the price of Jio’s 4G feature phone could be "at a paltry Rs 500 (sub-$8) to lure 2G subscribers to directly switch to 4G, "which implies "Jio subsidising each handset by as much as $10-15 (Rs 650-975)." "This launch can create the next wave of disruption in the telecom market," a top executive of one of the leading telcos told <a href="http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/company/corporate-trends/reliance-jio-may-disrupt-the-market-again-with-rs-500-handset/articleshow/59448452.cms">ET</a>. "Not just us, but the existing players could surely lose a chunk of their low-end voice customers - most of whom are pre-paid - once this 4G feature phone is launched." The phone would probably flood the market, since more than 18 million units have been ordered, the shipment of which would begin from July end or early-August, with a launch around India’s Independence Day on August 15th.

5G spectrum can wait, says telecom minister Manoj Sinha

RS Sharma, the chairman of Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (<a href="http://businessinsider.in/topic/TRAI" target="_blank">TRAI</a>), has said that a section of telcos has been making "too much of noise," lately. He also dismissed telcos’ demand to fix the interconnect usage charge (IUC) as the minimum price of a voice call. IUC is the price that a caller's operator pays to the receiving party's operator. Indian telcos like <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/markets/economy/airtel-and-vodafone-to-keep-price-war-on-to-counter-jio/articleshow/58313681.cms" target="_blank">Bharti Airtel, Vodafone India</a> and Idea Cellular had asked <keyword id="6356988" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="TRAI">TRAI</keyword> to fix IUC of 14 paisa per minute as the floor for retail voice tariffs. "There is too much of noise saying that the regulator must fix the minimum price. I don't think that's really a correct thing to do for a regulator. The price is under forbearance; both the top and bottom should be under forbearance. Dream11 IPL 2020’s opening match itself was watched by 200 million people, which indicates why IPL is the biggest marketing opportunity for brands this year to bounce back. IPL also brings along an array of wonderful ads every year. In the early years, brands like Vodafone, Kingfisher and Nestle created some spectacular work to take advantage of this uniquely-engaging event. However, the on-going pandemic has brought in a lot of challenges for agencies. They are producing ads with minimum money, trying to operate within the government guidelines of production and selling it for really expensive slots. They are also expected to create an ad that stands out in a sea full of celebrity-endorsing cliches. And after seeing a lean first-half this year, all kinds of brands are trying to cash in on IPL’s fervor. With this increased pressure and responsibility, agencies are working extra hours to meet clients’ expectations. To top that, an air of despondency is still looming around because of the fear of the unknown, blues of working in isolation, pressure to overperform in a dismal atmosphere, salary cuts, work overload and time-crunch. Ergo, COVID-19 has had a clear impact on the country's creative minds as well, possibly leading to unimpressive production this year. I think many advertisers think that a spot in the IPL must be anchored in cricket – and sometimes the best spots have little to do with the sport. Vodafone’s zoozoos are a great case in point.” On the other hand, Ambi Parameswaran, Founder, Brand-Building helped us look at the brighter side and appreciated brands who have trusted in advertising despite seeing gloomy days. Parameswaran said, “There is a lot of debate on the fall of creative quality of ads in this year’s IPL. But this is a false argument. The country faced a severe lockdown and even now the movie halls are yet to open. Film shootings are happening in stages. So it is futile to say that why are the ads not their sparkling best. Instead we should applaud the brands that have boldly decided to advertise. These brands are demonstrating their faith in advertising and its effectiveness. Yes, there is a surfeit of tech-enabled brands and that is to be expected. But there are also so many auto brands, consumer product brands, consumer service brands, etc., that have decided to bet on IPL. Each and every one of those brands needs to be praised and not criticised for their relative tame creative quality. Research has shown, over a broad range of products, the creative quality may account for just about 7 - 11 % of ad effectiveness. The balance rests with media weight and the core messaging. So let us put our hands together for those brave brands who have decided to stimulate the market, nudge the consumer out of their inertia, to start spending.” Earlier while conceptualising TV ads, production challenges were given scant thought while approving scripts. However today, the starting point of conceptualising creatives would be around the associated production constraints, which Ronita Mitra, Founder and Chief Strategist, Brand Eagle Consulting said is one of the reasons why IPL ads are impacted this year. Mitra said, “All these constraints and challenges are visible in the ads being played during IPL 2020. However, these challenging times are also the litmus test of the true creative potential of the creative teams. Due to cuts in marketing budgets, ads have probably been made on much lower budgets. Further given the safety protocols to be followed these days you can see that most brand ads are either old ones or shot with solo models, or using animation. Viewers would also be seeing ads with those filters in mind and therefore be tempering their expectations of the entertainment value of the ads. Still, IPL 2020 could have been the ideal opportunity for brands and agencies to showcase some real creative talent, and to show that creativity and the power of idea can rise above the constraints of low budgets or execution constraints. To that extent, the display of creative thinking has been rather disappointing. For me, the Dream 11 ads are the only ones that stand out for making a serious attempt at creating a series of engaging ads.” Albeit, Kuber Chopra, Founder, Creative &amp; Strategy Director, Rasta, said that lack of creativity is not due to lockdown constraints. Chopra said, “I don't think one should attribute this lack of creativity to the lockdown because all good creatives enjoy good constraints. I am personally just really surprised that no one has done anything contextual which is focussed on the consumers who’ve been dealing with the pandemic. For instance the ad by Paytm featuring Sachin Tendulkar is quite campy where the service is also lost. I really like Dream11’s focus on the active fan. It is also good to see how the cricket demigods have been humanised and are happy to be part of the sobering script. In my opinion, ads need to have some cultural connect with viewers and much of this is missing as is evident even in the ad for Apple 11.” “It’s surprising how brands haven't taken a chance with either new stories or fresh treatment. Decision-makers and creative heads have chosen to be safe,” added Chopra. IPL is considered India’s Super Bowl, not only because it’s the biggest sporting event but also because over the years, it has come to become the benchmark for creativity in advertisements. Shashwat Das, Founder, Almond Branding, said, “Whether it was the iconic Zoozoos or Jio dhan dhanadan, Amazon’s Chonkpur Cheetahs or IPL’s own Jumping Japang campaign, we always looked up to what’s new and path-breaking each season. The expectations have only grown over the years. However, this season, apart from the funny series of Dream11 ads nothing else have yet got people talking. With more digital viewers of IPL this year than ever before, the engagement and online conversations that a brand can pull is the biggest success parameter. Sadly I still remember the DLF Maxima from the initial days of IPL more than any brand campaign this season. I am hoping as the game progresses, brands will rise to the occasion and surprise us.” On how ad agencies can buckle up to help their clients reap the best benefits in the upcoming days of IPL, Sameer Makani, Co-Founder and Managing Director Makani Creatives said, “The industry is still coping up with the after-effects of the lockdown which had led to paralyzing the logistics and production involved in making ad films. Although progress in digital advertising is visible, the attention span of the audience is significantly reduced. Today, it’s about opting for a more concentrated approach and creating content that resonates with the audience instead of conventional carpet bombing. For instance – video content has become an excellent medium to touch, feel and engage with the audience in this new normal. It has helped several brands in channelizing the content in a manner that helps in leverage relationship with customers. The quality of ads depends on how well the advertiser is capable of sending the message and how well the audience perceives the message. This is an opportunity for brands to understand and conceptualize ads as per needs.” The story is not over yet Mathias anticipates that things will change as we get deeper into the league. He said, “I would expect a few brands may release fresh creatives as the tournament progresses. Given that viewership of the IPL has been phenomenal in the first phase and the tournament will build up to the festive season – there should be better advertising on the anvil.” Chopra is hoping to see smaller brands shine on Disney+ Hotstar. “I’m rooting for the iconic equivalent of 'Flipkart Kids' from the ed-tech folks who’ve heavily invested in the IPL. It’s really their moment to own. As a footnote, I’d keep an eye on Disney+ Hotstar -- where smaller advertisers can express themselves efficiently with lower media spends,” said he.
