<ul><li><keyword id="6354504" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="reliance-jio">Reliance Jio</keyword>'s broadband service, Jio Fiber, is scheduled to launch today.</li><li>It is reportedly going to launch bundled with Jio's gaming service, <keyword id="7995976" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="jio-console">Jio Console</keyword>.</li><li>The Jio Console will be in competition with <keyword id="7446305" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="google-stadia">Google Stadia</keyword> with claims to give users a ‘zero latency’ gaming experience.</li><li>With Stadia pegged to launch in 2020, Jio will have the first mover advantage.</li></ul>Stadia is a game streaming service that Google has been working on for at least three years. But before it even had a chance to launch, Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Jio is ready to offer an Indian alternative — the Jio Console. Jio Console is going to be a part of the company's new broadband service, Jio Fiber that scheduled to launch today on 5 September 2019. It also comes bundled with a whole host of other features like subscriptions to select OTT services and 600 cable TV channels. This will give it the first mover advantage since <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/I-tried-Stadia-Googles-big-play-to-conquer-video-games-Its-really-promising-but-theres-still-too-much-we-dont-know-/articleshow/68490221.cms?utm_source=ten_minutes_with&amp;utm_medium=Referral&amp;utm_campaign=Content_Patnership">Stadia</a> will only hit the market in 2020. Google isn’t the only company with something to worry about. As Jio positions itself as a game streaming console, it’s also looking to take Xbox’s sweet spot as a social gaming service. Jio has forged partnerships with Microsoft, Tencent and Gameloft already in place. The one key difference Stadia doesn’t need an additional computer hardware to work but Jio Console users are going to need the company’s set top box that comes with an integrated graphics card. Stadia just needs any device to have internet and be compatible with Chrome in order to function. This could have worked in Google’s favour but then again, it’s a not a pocket pinching compromise. Jio’s <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/details-of-jio-fibre-new-tariff-plan/articleshow/70639942.cms">GigaFiber plans</a> — which come coupled with the set top box — start at a mere ₹700 per month with a minimum speed of 100Mbps up for grabs. Claims of zero-latency Both, Google Stadio and Jio Console claim to provide an experience with zero latency — no delays. For serious gamers, this is probably the most enticing part of the formula. Zero latency means no lags between frames, better reaction times, and a higher chance of success against players who are stuck on a network with high latency. It may not seem like much but for racing and shooter games, where timing is key, but it can make the difference between winning or losing at a crucial moment. Despite the claims by both companies, they are yet to prove 100% seamless gameplay with accurate tests. Filling in the blanks There isn’t too much that has been disclosed by either company when it comes to their gaming platforms. They both claim that any controller can be used with their respective platforms. Nonetheless, Google still plans on launching its own controller, which will come equipped with the Google Assistant and claims to reduce latency even further. Both platforms are also claiming that they will be able to stream content in 4K quality, with Google planning to upgrade to an 8K resolution in the future. But, Stadia’s main impetus lies in the fact that users won’t have to download any content in order to play a game. Jio, on the other hand, has made no declarations of the kind. Not yet, anyway. Mukesh Ambani's Jio Console is trying to beat Google Stadia — and he's got a head start

<ul><li><keyword id="3820" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mukesh-Ambani">Mukesh Ambani</keyword>, the 9th richest man in the world, and the mastermind behind Jio has big plans and there’s no stopping him.</li><li>Jio’s growth ambitions are being compared to Chinese giants <keyword id="212412" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tencent">Tencent</keyword> and <keyword id="302749" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Alibaba">Alibaba</keyword>.</li><li>Jio has raised over $20.3 billion in investments including the likes of Google and Facebook and they are sold on the promise of the next big tech company. </li><li>Jio, which was launched in 2016, in less than four years went on to become the largest telecom provider in India.</li></ul>Tencent and Alibaba are currently racing to be <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2020/06/24/tencent-and-alibaba-in-a-battle-for-title-of-asias-biggest-company.html">Asia’s biggest company</a> - the market capitalisation of both companies is over $600 billion each. Jio’s parent Reliance Industries (RIL)⁠, a conglomerate with businesses ranging from oil and petrochemicals to technology, retail and telecom⁠, is less than a fourth in size but the sheer expanse, and ambition, that Mukesh Ambani has displayed in recent months is causing people to compare. Now, some see Jio as the next Alibaba, and some see it as India’s Tencent. Or is it both rolled into one? “Similar to Alibaba or Tencent which created tech-based ecosystems in China, we find RIL best positioned to create a similar ecosystem in India. In the next two-three years, we expect RIL to have a captive mobile base of over 500 million users,” said a Bank of America report dated July 16. <div type="image" title="Alibaba-and-Jio" msid="77065214" hostid="261"></div> “Their idea is to get into a household and see that every activity is done through a Jio service. That’s also what Tencent did in China. “RIL announced potential integration with Indian startups, including helping them with distribution/marketing and access to capital. This could potentially be a step towards acquiring stakes in Indian startups and using WhatsApp traffic to monetize these through a commission model. We note that Tencent has taken a similar approach in China for WeChat, with stakes in platforms such as Meituan, JD, PDD, etc. We see such a move by RIL to be positive for the Indian internet ecosystem,” said a Goldman Sachs report dated July 16. Jio has already invested in over 20 startups since June 2017 and, as Ambani hinted at the shareholders’ meeting, there may be more in the coming weeks and months. “I believe that there is no better partner for Indian start-ups than JIO. ecosystem control — right from content to music to movies as well as having all the different apps within that ecosystem. What was missing was the commerce piece of it,” Tarun Pathak, an associate director at research analytics firm Counterpoint, had told <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/apps/news/mukesh-ambani-wants-to-be-alibaba-with-reliance-jio-super-app-and-investment-from-facebook/articleshow/75343540.cms">Business Insider earlier.</a> <div type="image" title="Super app" msid="77059796" hostid="261"></div> A giant in its own right There are those who think that comparing Jio with Tencent is an exaggeration. Meanwhile, Arvind Singhal, managing director of Technopak, thinks it's foolish to compare Ambani’s plans to those of Tencent or Alibaba. “Many many years ago, people used to say Reliance will be the Walmart of India or the Amazon of India… no Reliance is Reliance, it deserves that credit. Their thinking is very far ahead in all sectors. In this case, Jio along with Retail is one complex piece of a puzzle,” he said. Tencent is a big player in gaming but Jio is still planning to get started with Akash Ambani’s announcement of Jio Console in the 2019 AGM of the company. While making big investments in technology, Ambani is also going big on <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/news/mukesh-ambani-next-goal-seems-to-be-the-retail-king-of-india/articleshow/76953716.cms">physical retail</a>, where Tencent is not a player, though Alibaba is. Refining and petrochemicals continues to contribute over 60% to the consolidated revenue of RIL⁠. Yet, Ambani has already disclosed his plan to spin out Jio and list it as a separate company. And when that happens, the sheer expanse of the company’s interest areas and their individual potential may be benchmarked to the value of similar businesses under the Alibaba and Tencent banners. India may be a smaller market compared to China, where Alibaba and Tencent are major players, but that also leaves a huge growth potential on the table for Jio. If Alibaba and Tencent are rolled into one, it may look a lot like Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Jio ⁠— only much smaller for now

Even though it is ₹700 per month, the actual amount users will have to pay after taxes comes up to ₹849. But, at the same time, there are options available to users looking for higher monthly data limits — provided they shell out the extra money. ACT Fibernet's 100 mbps plan is 37% more expensive than Jio Fiber, but it also offers 25% more data per month. Spectra, an internet service provider operating mostly in Delhi, is nearly twice as expensive but puts no limits on how much data a user can consume in a month. But, as speeds get faster the disparity between Jio and its competitors starts to decrease. The only difference is that Jio Fiber has set its data limit at 2,500 GB, where Airtel claims its placing no such restriction on consumption. ACT Fibernet, even ₹2,000 more expensive than Jio Fiber, is offering at extra 1,000 GB per month to its users. The increase in cost isn't proportional to the extra data but could make sense for users that have higher consumption requirements. Spectra's pricing of its 1 gbps plan goes in the other direction. It only offers 500 GB per month but it's also less than half the price of Jio Fiber's Platinum plan at ₹1,549. Jio Fiber Plans: Here's how Reliance Jio's broadband fiber plans fare against other companies

Millions of Indians gained regular access to the internet for the first time over the past three years.</li><li>This is thanks to the "Jio effect," after regional mobile operator Reliance Jio launched extremely cheap data tariffs in 2016, costing as little as Rs 15 ($0.21) per GB.</li><li> Indians went from consuming an average of 700mb of data per month to 11GB, according to Counterpoint Research analyst Neil Shah.</li><li>This has led to unintended consequences like Indian music label T-Series overtaking YouTube star PewDiePie to become most-subscribed YouTube channel.</li><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/prime?module=article&amp;area=summary">Click here for more BI Prime stories</a>.</li></ul>The "Jio effect" is little known outside India, but it's already reshaping the way Silicon Valley does business. The phenomenon is named after the arrival of Reliance Jio, a mobile network operator that launched in 2016 with extremely cheap data plans. The network was founded by Indian billionaire Mukesh Ambani, and the telco went from zero customers to becoming the biggest mobile operator in the world with more than 300 million subscribers. To put this in context, Reliance Jio's customer base is about as big as the entire US population. Jio's radical move was this: making 4G available to millions of Indians for free in 2016. It began charging nominal amounts for data in 2017 and, by then, the Indian appetite for internet content knew no bounds in part thanks to the availability of budget Android smartphones. Initially, Jio made no money, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/reliance-jio-and-reliance-retail-may-help-mukesh-ambani-rils-quarterly-earnings/articleshow/70274830.cms">but it has now become profitable</a>. "Jio has changed the consumption habits for hundreds of millions of consumers," said Neil Shah, an analyst at Counterpoint Research. "More people are using smartphones as their first device, unlike developed markets where the PC is the first device." Shah estimates that thanks to Jio's pricing, Indians have gone from consuming just 700MB of data per month to 11GB. This would let you watch about 30 episodes of "Game of Thrones." "You can get around 28GB of data for just a couple of dollars," says Shah. "And in that sense, once you have cheaper data and a smartphone, you're going to consume more content." Reuters Unlike the West, Indian smartphone adoption is still growing in the double digits as people buy their first internet-connected device. "More and more people are using smartphones as their first device, unlike developed markets where the PC is the first device," says Shah. This is significant. According to Pew Research, <a href="https://www.pewinternet.org/fact-sheet/mobile/">around 81% of Americans own a smartphone</a>, meaning there isn't much room to grow. The smartphone probably isn't their first internet-connected device either. Most consumers outside of India won't have really noticed what this means for the wider internet, but one incident really put the Jio effect on the map: this year's battle between Indian record label T-Series and Swedish vlogger PewDiePie to become most-subscribed YouTube channel. T-Series is a long-established Indian record label, producing music videos in various Indian languages as well as highly successful blockbuster films, all targeted at the home market. PewDiePie, by contrast, is a 29-year-old gaming vlogger and representative of a specific Western YouTube demographic - the self-referential, meme-loving, and occasionally offensive gamer. Up until March 2018, PewDiePie, real name Felix Kjellberg, was by the far the most popular YouTuber and inspiration for hundreds of other smaller creators who riffed off his offbeat humour and occasionally tasteless pranks. It has cemented its lead five months on, with 108 million subscribers versus PewDiePie's 98 million. Because cheap bandwidth is essentially unlimited, Indians are treating YouTube as their de facto streaming service, according to Shah. With access to the internet for the first time, they're turning to YouTube to find their favourite Indian language songs. "Most users have warmed up to YouTube to consume content, not just video, but music," he says. "They are going to YouTube rather than Spotify. People like T-Series or Star Network are seeing growth in video as well as music content." Neeraj Kalyan, president of T-Series, told Business Insider: "The recent growth of internet in India has increased the consumption of Indian content and, because of the decreased data costs, increase internet penetration, and higher bandwidth, this has been a real catalyst. "In 2016, there was mobile internet available in tier one or tier two cities, but now it's in tier three to tier five cities and villages, which had never experienced internet. So now the consumer is excited, and he's experimenting with everything, and it's resulted in an increase in consumption." It isn't just YouTube. India is now producing its own Silicon Valley-style internet giants, such as retail firm Flipkart - majority acquired by Walmart for $16 billion - online supermarket Grofers, payment firm Paytm, and Uber rival Ola. Facebook, for example, began talking about the Jio effect indirectly in late 2016. The firm first mentioned the impact of cheap data in India on its Q3 2016 earnings call when CFO Dave Wehner said: "We're seeing the introduction of low price data plans in markets like India and Mexico contributing [to user growth]." Facebook would continue to talk about the impact of India's "promotional free data plans" on its user growth in every subsequent earnings call for a year. And the firm has described India as its biggest growth market in every quarter since Q3 2016, according to call transcripts analysed by Business Insider. Google is also playing nice with Jio. Its CEO Sundar Pichai attended the wedding of Akash Ambani, son of Reliance chairman Mukesh Ambani, earlier this year. And the firm has been flagging the <a href="https://abc.xyz/investor/static/pdf/2017_Q1_Earnings_Transcript.pdf?cache=91f0790">massive growth in Indian Android users</a> since early 2017, not long after the launch of Reliance Jio. How the 'Jio effect' brought millions of Indians online and is reshaping Silicon Valley and the internet

So much so, before the launch of Reliance Jio today, his competitor Bharti Airtel launched a new set of plans to brace against the onslaught. At Reliance Industries’ <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/reliance-jio-fired-up-as-mukesh-ambani-joins-hands-with-satya-nadellas-microsoft-to-challenge-jeff-bezos-in-india/articleshow/70641754.cms">annual general meeting</a>, Ambani promised a minimum speed of 100 mbps for Jio Fiber. He also said that his plans will start at ₹700 per month. Hathaway isn’t going to be left behind. The company’s new ‘Freedom Plan’ offers 100 mbps at ₹699 per month with a data cap of 1 TB. But, here’s what most people don’t know — <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/the-difference-between-mukesh-ambanis-jio-and-ani-ambanis-reliance-communications/articleshow/70869465.cms">Reliance Jio</a> owns 51.3% stake in Hathaway. Offering plans and tariffs at par with what Jio has to offer will only helping Reliance’s broadband with its last-mile connectivity, and help Ambani mop up the market at various price points. One way is by introducing a plan that’s offering half the speed at half the price. For users who feel like they don’t really need 100 mbps can opt for a 50 mbps plan at ₹399 without limits on data consumption. Hathaway’s also offering 150 mbps plans at ₹1,499 per month with a data cap of 1TB. The only catch is that Hathaway requires a minimum three-month subscription in other for users to sign up for its services. Airtel’s plans are pricier but allows you to carry forward data Airtel also has a broadband plan for ₹799 a month but it offers speeds of 40 mbps with data capped at 100GB. Airtel’s V-Fiber broadband is offering another 200GB of additional data for a span of six months within that plan — but it’s a mere fraction of what Jio and Hathaway have up for grabs. Airtel could have a leg up on Jio, depending on the conditions of plans, since it allows users to carry forward any unused data. If you’re looking for speed, Airtel’s 100 mbps plan costs ₹1099 per month with a data cap of 500GB and an additional 300GB for six months. Airtel and Hathway’s broadband plans are gearing up for Jio Fiber’s salvo

He also pointed out that the investment cycle for Jio is now complete and going forward, the company only needs marginal investments in terms of access in order to grow its capacity in order to meet demand. Ambani even asserted that Jio is 5G ready today. Making Indian businesses global Jio is partnering with Microsoft to bring the Azure platform to Jio data centers across the country. Using Microsoft’s Azure AI, Jio will be able to develop India specific solutions like speech recognition and natural language understanding for Indian languages and dialects. "Our long term partnership combines the power of Azure, Azure AI and Office 365 with Jio’s connectivity and digital solutions, which are among the most used and fast growing in the world," said <keyword id="276564" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Satya-Nadella">Satya Nadella</keyword> in a statement during the event. To support that mission, the service will be free for Indian technology startups and small businesses can avail it at a nominal price of ₹1,500, which is one-tenth of its official cost. Launching its own Internet of Things With a revenue opportunity of ₹20,000 crore, Reliance Jio is planning to set up its own Internet of Things. With 2 billion devices expected to go digital over the next two years in India, Jio wants to be the connectivity provider for at least half of them. Jio’s pan India Narrowband Internet of THings (NBIoT) will launch on 1 January 2020 residential, industrial and public devices. Blocking chain and keeping Indian data in India Over the next twelve months, Jio plans to install one of the largest blockchain networks in the world that will include throughs on nodes that be operation when the services takes off. Ambani states that this is a brand new data model for Indian data, specifically customer data. "Data is wealth, and Indian wealth must remain in India," he said explaining why data needs to be owned and controlled by Indians and not by corporates — especially not global corporates. Faster speeds with EDGE computing EDGE computing is bringing connectivity nodes as close as possible to the user. Over the next couple of months Jio is setting up a pan India EDGE computing and content distribution network starting will thousands of nodes. Ambani explains that, "The next frontier of content is immersive," which is why EDGE computing is important for bringing in faster downloads and faster response times. With EDGE, India and its 1,600 cities will be among the first in the world for Indian residents to experience AR, VR and MR on Jio Fiber, according to Ambani. Taking Jio Fiber Live Reliance Jio has been testing its optical fiber broadband network since August last year. Spanning over 1,600 towns, the service generated over 15 million registrations and trials are already underway in 500,000 homes. And now, it’s going to launch commercially on 5 September 2019 across India on Jio’s three year anniversary with the aim of reaching 20 million households and 15 million businesses. The welcome offer for Jio Fiber includes an HD 4K television set as well as an HD 4K set top box that supports gaming. The aim is to launch the company’s first multi-player gaming platform at zero latency. Jio also demoed its new mixed reality (MR) headset, which is a combination of augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR), that its building with the help of one of the startups under its umbrella. OTT services and new movies at home A subscription to Jio Fiber is also going to come bundled with subscriptions to most of the leading premium OTT applications. Ambani said the aim is to make the subscription model more convenient for users so that they don’t have to pay and sign up for multiple services separately — they just get them all through Jio. Users also won’t have to go to the cinema to watch movies anymore. With Jio’s ‘First Day First Show’ feature, Jio Premium members can watch movies on their Jio Fiber connections on the same day that those films hit the theaters. This service won’t be available immediately but Ambani stated that it should be live by mid-2020. Back to basics Aside from the bells and whistles, Jio Fiber isn’t skimping on the basics of a broadband connection. The lowest of its plans will start at speeds of 100Mbps and go all the way up to 1Gbps. And, like Jio undercut its competition’s prices when its 4G network went live, its broadband services plans to do the same with prices starting at ₹700 per month and keeping voice calls free forever. FUPs basically are limits for data downloads, crossing which speeds of the said plans will fall drastically. This is true even with unlimited plans, where operators believe that users tend to leave devices open and unattended when a plan is offered without limits. Higher speeds but less data Jio’s bronze, silver and gold subscription plans come bundled with free voice calls, free TV calling and conferencing services. These plans also include a free subscription to the Jio Console — Jio’s multiplayer game streaming service that’s making its debut with the promise of zero latency. The welcome offer — valid for a limited period of time and subject to annual subscription only — is only offering a free three-month subscription to JioCinema and JioSaavn for the bronze plan users. Even the silver plan is limited to a three month subscription but will include other streaming platforms, yet to be disclosed. Airtel’s V-Fiber plans, on the other hand, come bundled with free subscriptions to Amazon Prime Video, Netflix, Zee5 and Airtel Xstream as well as unlimited free calling within India. Freebies for Bronze, Silver and Gold plans Along with the three monthly plans of ₹699, ₹899 and ₹1,299, the plans offer unlimited data downloads, with a fair usage policy as mentioned in the next section. These plans come bundled with free voice calls, free TV calling and conferencing service, and zero latency gaming — Jio Console. They will also allow for content sharing at home and outside the home. The plans have also bundled Norton antivirus package for five devices. Freebies for Diamond, Platinum and Titanium plans Along with all the freebies mentioned above, the Diamond, Platinum and Titanium plan holders will receive platform access to a virtual reality platform which provides theatre-like experience, claims Jio.
