<ul><li>As per TRAI report, India has over 800million broadband connections.</li><li>There was a massive growth in the month of July, with 14.78million new wireless subscribers.</li><li>Broadband is currently defined as connections having download speeds over 512Kbps.</li></ul>The total broadband connections in India exceeded 800 million according to a July report released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). The number of subscribers increased from 792.78 million at the end of June to 808.6 million at the end of July this year. According to <a href="https://www.trai.gov.in/sites/default/files/PR_No.44of2021.pdf">the report</a>, the growth of broadband subscribers was massive with almost 2% growth in one month. Most of the growth was seen in wireless subscriptions, as 14.78 million new users were added. Wired subscriptions increased by only 4,90,000 while fixed wireless services increased by over 83% in the month, from 6,50,000 subscriptions to over 1.19 million. Wireless subscriptions include connectivity via phone and dongles while fixed connections include Wi-Fi, Wi-Max, Point-to-point Radio and VSAT. Interestingly, TRAI defines broadband as a connection offering download speeds of 512Kbps or more. And these subscriptions numbers are as per this definition. However, TRAI has shared a <a href="https://www.trai.gov.in/sites/default/files/Recommendations_31082021_0.pdf">recommendation</a> in August to review the definition of broadband. As per the new recommendation, ‘basic broadband’ would be connections having download speeds between 2Mbps and less than 50Mbps. 'Fast <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/telecom/news/minimum-broadband-speed-in-india-increased-to-2mbps-from-512kbps/articleshow/85828322.cms">broadband</a>’ would be connections offering download speeds between 50Mbps to 300Mbps. ‘Super-fast broadband’ would be connections offering download speeds over 300Mbps. The report further states that the top five service providers in the country had 98.77% market share of the total broadband subscribers, with <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/telecom/news/reliance-jio-launched-new-prepaid-plans-with-free-disney-hotstar-mobile-subscription/articleshow/85824111.cms">Reliance Jio</a> leading the way with 446.68 million subscribers. Airtel came in a distant second with 201.77 million subscribers and followed by Vodafone Idea with 123.97 million subscriptions. The wired broadband service was led by BSNL with 5.83 million subscribers. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/telecom/news/airtel-founder-sunil-mittal-wants-to-increase-mobile-tariffs-by-at-least-33-in-2021/articleshow/85763847.cms">Airtel</a> and <keyword id="6354504" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="reliance-jio" source="Orion">Reliance Jio</keyword> followed it with 3.54 million and 3.47 million subscribers respectively. The total number of subscribers went past 1.2 billion with the addition of 6.88 million subscribers in the month of July. With this, the teledensity in the country took a leap and reached 88.51% — meaning there are 88.51 telephone subscriptions every 100 people. This number was, however, low in rural India with a teledensity of 60.33%. The share of urban and rural subscribers in the total number of telephone subscribers was 55.46% and 44.54%, respectively. Reliance Jio powers ahead of its competitors as India’s broadband connections go past 800 million

Since touching a high in July, Airtel’s share price has plunged by over 20%. However, it isn’t quite panning out that way. Vodafone Idea has rebranded itself, the Board has approved fundraising and according to a report, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/telecom/news/vodafone-idea-may-need-up-to-18800-crore-in-next-two-years-and-tariff-hikes-to-survive-says-a-new-report/articleshow/77923943.cms">US tech giants Amazon and Verizon could invest $4 billion in Vodafone Idea</a>. The investment could give the Birla Group company the cash it needs to survive for the next two years, according to the Jefferies report. This, coupled with tariff hikes and a stable subscriber base, could allow the telco to survive. The threat from JioPhone In the mobile sector, Airtel faces another challenge from Jio. According to the <a href="https://www.trai.gov.in/sites/default/files/PR_No.62of2020_1.pdf">latest report from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India</a> (TRAI), 55% of Airtel’s 318 million subscribers are still on 2G. This presents both an opportunity as well as a threat to Airtel. The opportunity here is that Airtel could boost its average revenue per user (ARPU) significantly by just converting these 2G users to 4G. This would also negate the need for a tariff hike to some extent. “Airtel’s focus is to convert 2G subscribers to 4G,” Nitin Soni, Director, Fitch Ratings, told Business Insider. But then, Jio is coming into the ring with a low-cost 4G smartphone. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/mobile/news/jio-google-qualcomm-deal-for-new-4g-smartphone-jiophone/articleshow/76992941.cms">Jio has plans to build the next JioPhone</a> in partnership with Google and Qualcomm. If Airtel doesn’t move fast, it could lose even its existing 2G subscribers like sand through fingers. Jio’s broadband challenge Although Jio Fiber broadband service was launched last year, it decided against disrupting the broadband sector like it did the mobile one. However, that has changed now. In August, Jio announced new broadband plans with lower prices and unlimited data, taking on its rival Airtel. Jio has built a vast network of fiber coverage and a substantially stronger balance sheet to expand coverage even further. However, this time around, Airtel responded immediately by converting all of its plans to offer unlimited data as well. Another tariff war is not what the shareholders want. One way is by introducing a plan that’s offering half the speed at half the price. For users who feel like they don’t really need 100 mbps can opt for a 50 mbps plan at ₹399 without limits on data consumption. Hathaway’s also offering 150 mbps plans at ₹1,499 per month with a data cap of 1TB. The only catch is that Hathaway requires a minimum three-month subscription in other for users to sign up for its services. Airtel’s plans are pricier but allows you to carry forward data Airtel also has a broadband plan for ₹799 a month but it offers speeds of 40 mbps with data capped at 100GB. Airtel’s V-Fiber broadband is offering another 200GB of additional data for a span of six months within that plan — but it’s a mere fraction of what Jio and Hathaway have up for grabs. Airtel could have a leg up on Jio, depending on the conditions of plans, since it allows users to carry forward any unused data. If you’re looking for speed, Airtel’s 100 mbps plan costs ₹1099 per month with a data cap of 500GB and an additional 300GB for six months. But, Jio also intends to lock in users with annual plans, and this offer might only be available for a ‘limited’ period. To connect to the services, Jio users will need to make security deposit of ₹4,500 and obtain the ONT device (GigaHub Home Gateway) provided by the company. Those looking to switch internet services should also study the ability of their provider to offer top-notch service, which is essential for broadband services. Airtel and Hathway’s broadband plans are gearing up for Jio Fiber’s salvo

The only difference is that Jio Fiber has set its data limit at 2,500 GB, where Airtel claims its placing no such restriction on consumption. ACT Fibernet, even ₹2,000 more expensive than Jio Fiber, is offering at extra 1,000 GB per month to its users. The increase in cost isn't proportional to the extra data but could make sense for users that have higher consumption requirements. Spectra's pricing of its 1 gbps plan goes in the other direction. It only offers 500 GB per month but it's also less than half the price of Jio Fiber's Platinum plan at ₹1,549. <ul><li>A new price war may emerge in the broadband sector with Jio Fiber’s aggressive pricing of its broadband subscriptions.</li><li>A similar price war triggered when Reliance Jio entered the market in 2016 with rock bottom pricing of mobile data plans.</li><li>The competitive intensity in the broadband sector will increase as major players to fight to hold on to customers as the price war shifts, according to a report by Elara Capital.</li></ul>Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Jio seems to be set to repeat history with its <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/news/compare-jio-fiber-broadband-plan-against-airtel-act-youbroadband-and-spectra/articleshow/71642187.cms">aggressive pricing</a> of broadband subscriptions. Undercutting most of the competition, Jio Fiber’s promised monthly plans <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/jiofibers-plans-look-cheaper-but-airtel-is-giving-you-more-data/articleshow/70997713.cms">starting at</a> ₹700 per month and a minimum speed of 100 MBPS. At half the price, the company's introduced a new top-up that only costs ₹350 per month and offers 50GB at speeds of 10MBPS, which will cut to 1MBPS after fair usage policy (FUP). Similarly, when Jio entered the market back in 2016, data became <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/news/indias-mobile-tariffs-arent-the-cheapest-in-the-world-anymore/articleshow/72342660.cms">cheaper than ever before</a>. But, it was not without its pitfalls. The move also pushed out most of the competition in the market. And now, major players in the market — Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea — are <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/news/reliance-jio-airtel-and-vodafone-idea-may-raise-tariff-soon/articleshow/71757089.cms">fighting to recover losses</a> as their debt continues to rise. With the way Jio Fiber’s pricing its products so far — it looks like there might be another price war on the horizon. The makings of a price war When data prices on mobile fell, it brought more people online. But, after three years of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/mukesh-ambanis-telecom-war-escalates-telecom-industry-debt-to-3-9-lakh-crore/articleshow/70906000.cms">racking up debt</a>, telecom operators are <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/corporates/news/telcos-revenue-rising-but-accumulated-debt-eating-into-it-moodys/articleshow/72271809.cms">hiking their prices back up</a> by as much as 40%. They have also asked the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) to set up a floor price for data services in order to regulate tariffs because the price war has gotten so intense that no operator will voluntarily correct their prices. Meanwhile, smaller players that couldn’t survive the competition were either shut down or acquired by one of the major players. No new company could enter the market since it was unviable to offer the same prices as the telco giants. Now, Jio’s employing the same strategy to the broadband sector. “We expect the competitive intensity to rise as incentives including free content, could increase, especially from, to achieve the targeted customer base,” according to Elara Capital. Small local players, like YouBroadband and ACT Fibernet, could be forced out of the market as Jio’s squeezes on margins. Larger players, like Vodafone Idea and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/jiofibers-plans-look-cheaper-but-airtel-is-giving-you-more-data/articleshow/70997713.cms">Bharti Airtel</a>, will have to defend their market share while also trying to grow. And government players, which include BSNL and MTNL, will struggle with their already troubled profits. “While telecom firm’s contemplating mobile tariff hike was encouraging, the price seems to be shifting to FTTH [Fiber To The Home] market and could pressure margin,” stated Elara Capital’s report. The telecom sector’s price war had Jio in the lead within a short span of time, not just in terms of users, but also in terms of revenue market share. And, the same seems to be set to happen in the broadband sector — again. Others believe Jio Fiber’s broadband won’t be disruptive asserting that other operators offer higher value on a per GB basis. Mukesh Ambani starts another tariff war with Jio Fiber's rock-bottom tariffs

But before it even had a chance to launch, Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Jio is ready to offer an Indian alternative — the Jio Console. Jio Console is going to be a part of the company's new broadband service, Jio Fiber that scheduled to launch today on 5 September 2019. It also comes bundled with a whole host of other features like subscriptions to select OTT services and 600 cable TV channels. Google isn’t the only company with something to worry about. As Jio positions itself as a game streaming console, it’s also looking to take Xbox’s sweet spot as a social gaming service. Jio has forged partnerships with Microsoft, Tencent and Gameloft already in place. The one key difference Stadia doesn’t need an additional computer hardware to work but Jio Console users are going to need the company’s set top box that comes with an integrated graphics card. Stadia just needs any device to have internet and be compatible with Chrome in order to function. This could have worked in Google’s favour but then again, it’s a not a pocket pinching compromise. Jio’s <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/details-of-jio-fibre-new-tariff-plan/articleshow/70639942.cms">GigaFiber plans</a> — which come coupled with the set top box — start at a mere ₹700 per month with a minimum speed of 100Mbps up for grabs. Claims of zero-latency Both, Google Stadio and Jio Console claim to provide an experience with zero latency — no delays. For serious gamers, this is probably the most enticing part of the formula. Zero latency means no lags between frames, better reaction times, and a higher chance of success against players who are stuck on a network with high latency. It may not seem like much but for racing and shooter games, where timing is key, but it can make the difference between winning or losing at a crucial moment. Despite the claims by both companies, they are yet to prove 100% seamless gameplay with accurate tests. Filling in the blanks There isn’t too much that has been disclosed by either company when it comes to their gaming platforms. They both claim that any controller can be used with their respective platforms. Nonetheless, Google still plans on launching its own controller, which will come equipped with the Google Assistant and claims to reduce latency even further. Both platforms are also claiming that they will be able to stream content in 4K quality, with Google planning to upgrade to an 8K resolution in the future. But, Stadia’s main impetus lies in the fact that users won’t have to download any content in order to play a game. Jio, on the other hand, has made no declarations of the kind. Not yet, anyway.
