"Even the local kirana shop owner can set up his own AI bot in under 5 minutes," said one of the demo experts at India Mobile Congress 2019 (IMC 2019). Jio video call bot can be accessed by a simple 4G phone call without asking customers to install an additional app onto their smartphones. As per the live demo, business owners have to just sign up and choose a profile. The Jio Bot Maker will suggest a preloaded set of questions to which businesses can record their responses. They can customise their answers on the text before hand, and even augment the question if required. Going beyond video Some customers might not want to video call every time they have a question — even if they are just talking to a bot. So, Jio is working on giving users the versatility between video, text and voice calls. They're developing a customer service platform for users which can switch between the three methods of communication, anytime during a customer service call. "This also addresses privacy concerns for users who might not necessarily want to show themselves on video," explained the Jio demo expert. So, a user can be on video and switch over to just voice if they have an unexpected visitor or even text, if they have to engage in a conversation offline. Meanwhile, the customer service bot will not be affected by these changes and will be able to answer questions in continuity. Jio has already sold the Jio Bot to HDFC. The banking major is testing the software in-house before launching it for their customers. If you ask the assistant anything that's outside of sphere of knowledge — like an non-banking related question — he'll respond by asking you ask something else. Jio developed the video call bot in partnership with Radisys, a subsidiary of Reliance Industries in the US.

Chatbots hallucinate and get confused, says Jio Haptik which is ‘training’ them

New Delhi, Apr 27 () Billionaire Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Industries has started limited test use of WhatsApp to connect customers to grocery stores, days after Facebook decided to invest USD 5.7 billion in digital assets controlled by the company. JioMart, an e-commerce venture of Reliance Retail, "has already started interacting with customers on WhatsApp for grocery orders" in Navi Mumbai, Thane and Kalyan, Credit Suisse said in a report. "The customer initiates the interaction on WhatsApp, checks out the grocery order on JioMart webpage, gets connected with a retail store on WhatsApp and then customer picks up the order from Kirana and pays in cash," it said, adding the model is likely on delivery and completion of the transaction on one app. The Facebook deal will help Ambani set up a digital platform to take on Amazon and Walmart's Flipkart in an e-commerce market that KPMG says is likely to grow to USD 200 billion by 2027. The deal benefits Facebook via "partnership with the largest retail player in India, where partnership starts with grocery, and later could be extended to medicine distribution, fashion and lifestyle stores, food delivery, etc," Credit Suisse said in a report. Also, Reliance Jio, with its 388 million telecom users, could provide telecom infrastructure for various Facebook's solutions, it said. For RIL, the large user base of WhatsApp (400 million) could significantly accelerate the adoption of the JioMart app besides it would leverage Facebook's experience to monetize data through advertising. "The key advantage is not only the large base of WhatsApp users in India but the amount of time spent on the app per day by an average user. "This would catapult Jio into the attention of the large user base, thereby addressing the first key barrier of awareness post-launch of its New Commerce offering," Credit Suisse said adding this was based on assumption that at some stage, JioMart could be a mini-app within WhatsApp (a concept similar to WeChat mini-programmes) which would avoid new 400 million downloads of JioMart and give JioMart immediate access to 400 million users of WhatsApp for grocery. It is likely that the partnership could be extended beyond grocery to other retail products too. "Deal cash flow would help RIL bring down overall net debt and help to move towards its target of achieving zero net debt by March 2021," it added. J P Morgan in a separate report said it believes that initially WhatsApp would be integrating a 'Jio Shopping bot' on the API, and allow users to add the bot to their contacts. Once added, users can search for a local business, see available products in a catalogue, and purchase the product in the thread or in the shop. The Facebook deal should help accelerate Jio's ability to further evolve into a full-stack player across India's e-commerce ecosystem, it said. The acquisition of a 9.99 per cent stake in Jio Platforms Ltd for USD 5.7 billion represents the second-largest investment of Facebook to date (the largest was USD 19 billion WhatsApp acquisition in February 2014). This corresponds to a quarter's worth of free cash flows for the firm. Netflix decided to leave it to bots for its latest horror movie

New Delhi, Apr 30 () Days after selling a stake in its digital arm to <keyword id="6354576" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="facebook">Facebook</keyword> for USD 5.7 billion, <keyword id="10926" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Reliance">Reliance</keyword> Industries on Thursday said it is in talks with other strategic and financial investors for a similar-sized deal that will help cut debt at the unit that houses India's youngest but biggest mobile operator. Without revealing the identity of the companies, RIL in its fourth-quarter earnings statement said the investment would be announced in the coming months. "In addition to the FB investment, the board was informed that RIL has received strong interest from other strategic and financial investors and is in good shape to announce a similar-sized investment in the coming months," it said. Ahead of last week's announcement of Facebook buying a 9.99 per cent stake in Jio Platforms Ltd, there were unconfirmed reports of the company being in parallel discussions with Google. The potential interest, the company said, establishes "the attractiveness of Jio Platforms to the world and is a strong validation of RIL's capability to conceive large-scale disruptive greenfield businesses". "With strong visibility to these equity infusions, the board was informed that RIL is set to achieve net-zero debt status ahead of its own aggressive timeline," the statement said. Jio in a statement said the launch strengthens Jio True 5G coverage in Madhya Pradesh, close to the unveiling of coveted events like Pravasi Bharatiya Divas and Invest MP - Global Investor Summit at Indore. With it, Reliance Jio said it became the first and the only operator in Madhya Pradesh to launch 5G services across all large cities of Madhya Pradesh including Bhopal and Indore. Jio is also the only operator to launch 5G services in Ludhiana, thereby rapidly strengthening its True 5G coverage in Punjab, which was launched last week, according to the statement. The company said its users in these cities would be invited to the Jio Welcome Offer, to experience unlimited data at more than 1 (gigabit per second) Gbps speeds, at no additional cost, starting from Friday. Jio 5G services are now available across 72 Indian cities

In the latest edition of Power On newsletter, Mark Gurman claims Apple is planning to unleash its own pricey device with advanced chips, displays, sensor, and avatar-based features as early as next year, reports Apple Insider. The headset will include "both AR and VR capabilities, which could offer a "mixed reality experience that can handle games in high-quality virtual reality". The upcoming headset would likely not be aimed at consumers, but instead be geared towards developers and business customers. According to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple's headset will lead the "next wave of user interface revolution" and change market consensus that AR/VR devices are mainly for gaming. But on the sidelines — as telecommunication companies await the 5G spectrum auction — vendors are helping them improve the existing 4G network. Huawei, the Chinese tech giant, is helping Vodafone Idea optimise its 4G network using artificial intelligence (AI). But, it's doing it on 5G technology. Vodafone Idea's Massive MIMO technology is 5G ready and is the third largest deployment in the world so far. The company claims that this is the first time that an AI-based solution has been used to optimise multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) technology — an essential element of standard 4G networks. "The deployment solution will enable Vodafone Idea to enhance their pre-5G Massive MIMO network," stated Jay Chen, CEO of <keyword id="146229" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Huawei-India">Huawei India</keyword>. What is MIMO? MIMO multiplies the capacity of a radio link by letting antennas receive signals from multiple pathways. By using AI, Huawei can increase the capacity of Vodafone Idea's 4G network by making it more efficient. "Adding AI capabilities to India's largest deployment of Massive MIMO for enhancing user experience is a further testament of our commitment to create a future-proof network for the digital era," stated Vishant Vora, the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Vodafone Idea. Huawei's random forest algorithm collects and analyses the data to model and predict how the 4G network can be optimised. Since Massive MIMO is meant for 5G, it's able to use the 5G technology to leverage 4G connectivity. Vodafone Idea's 4G networks will now run on 5G technology and Huawei's AI

However, coders in India are coming to the rescue. For instance, the engineering manager at PhonePe, <a href="https://twitter.com/debarko/status/1388549978721636354">Debarko De</a>, has posted a script on code hosting platform GitHub to help people in Bangalore looking for appointment slots. Agra-based software developer Amit Agarwal has created a <a href="https://twitter.com/labnol/status/1388556580325453824">COVID-19 vaccine tracker</a>, built with Google Sheets, so that people can get alerts over email whenever an appointment opens up for a particular age group within a prescribed pincode. Many are questioning whether such an endeavour is legal or not. He also created multiple groups on <a href="https://twitter.com/BertyThomas/status/1388477672901120003">Telegram</a> for those who wish to receive alerts for their respective districts. The list is not exhaustive, but does cover most of the main metropolitan regions across the country. And Thomas isn’t using the government’s API to do it. The API is only powering the alerts, not storing your information. Similar sites like <a href="http://www.getjab.in">getjab.in</a> and <a href="http://www.findslot.in">findslot.in</a> are also doing the same thing. And, the reason they’re being allowed to stick around is because users still have to login into the CoWIN platform to register. That part of the process cannot be done externally. This is important because this is where the government draws the line between what is allowed and what is not allowed to be done with its APIs. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="What is an API?" comment="subhead" text="What is an API?">What is an API?</cmsannotation> An application programming interface, or API, is basically a bridge between two applications. It’s like the waiter who takes your order, ensures that it gets relayed to the chef, and then brings you your final meal. In the case of looking for CoWIN appointment slots, you’re placing your request on a website, and that website then relays it to the API, like the customer at the restaurant. The API then checks with the CoWIN portal — or the chef — before showing you the availability of slots. The Indian government opened up the CoWIN APIs to allow third party access, on April 28. They can be found on the government’s API Setu website which contains authentication, metadata, beneficiary registration, vaccination appointment and certificate APIs. With these APIs, the third party users can access information like vaccination centres, list of districts, vaccination appointments among others. There are two types of APIs -- public and protected. Using public APIs is not a problem and they’re freely available on the government site. Gupshup launches Conversation Cloud, AI-powered tool for businesses

Not only have telecom companies in the US and South Korea already offering these services, Indian telcos are also starting to try and test the technology. Vodafone Idea is already using 5G technology to improve its 4G offerings. India is also awaiting the auction of 5G spectrum, and its use cases and applications are buzzing at India Mobile Congress (IMC) 2019 in New Delhi. At this event, Business Insider India caught up with <keyword id="8222657" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="preeti-nagarajan">Preeti Nagarajan</keyword>, Head of Strategy for Business Area Networks at Ericsson. She highlights the challenges that India will have to overcome before the dream of 5G becomes a reality. 1. The need for a spectrum The rest of world may already by rolling out 5G connectivity to its users but, in India, 5G spectrum is yet to be allocated. This means full-fledged trials are still pending which is needed for telecom operators to test their technology. "India needs spectrum, let’s start there. It was very promising to hear that, before the end of the financial year, we should have the 5G spectrum auction in India. That needs to happen," said Nagarajan. 2. Spectrum is too expensive One of the reasons that the 5G spectrum auction has been delayed in India is because its too expensive for telecom companies. India’s debt-ridden operators are still reeling under the pressure to keep 4G costs low. But, there may be hope on the horizon. "They will come up with innovative policy solutions for pricing the spectrum. This helps our customers, the operators, to start bringing 5G in," stated Nagarajan. The Indian government announced that it is looking into new ways to price the spectrum to accommodate the requests of the telecom companies at IMC. 3. Finding space for the spectrum The biggest challenge when deploying 5G is acquisition of sites, according to Nagarajan. "Now we’re talking about Massive MIMO equipment, which are huge pieces of equipment out there. And, for every piece of spectrum out there, there’s equipment already at the site," she explained. As network connectivity expands, more towers and more antennas will be required. The And ownership of site will also have a greater role to play. "It’s extremely important that we own the site. And we help and enable our customers to own their sites in a good way," said Nagarajan. 4. <keyword id="8222656" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="affordable-5g-devices">Affordable 5G devices</keyword> On the consumer front, even if 5G network connectivity comes in, affordable 5G phones are yet to make into the market. "So, I think it’s in the roadmap. The technology is there for it," said Nagarajan.
