Prosecutors alleged at trial that Josh downloaded hundreds of pieces of child sexual abuse material to his office computer at his used car dealership in Springdale, Arkansas. In her book, Vuolo revealed that she hadn't spoken to Josh, who is the oldest of 18 children, in about two years. In an interview with Insider conducted in January, Vuolo elaborated on her feelings about Josh's crimes. "My heart, it really just breaks for the victims and their families and all that they've gone through," she said. "And I'm so thankful that justice has been served with my brother, and ultimately I just would pray that he would be truly broken about what he's done." Vuolo admitted that she has trouble speaking on the topic and added, "the most important thing for any one of us is that we would come to know that we will each stand before God. Or maybe, like me, you've always had an affinity for cousin Amy, the family's original rebel.The Duggars appealed to me as a viewer because I can relate to the religious trauma that <a href="https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/books/story/2023-01-19/jinger-duggar-memoir-bill-gothard-iblp-19-kids-and-counting-on" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Vuolo divulges in her new book</a> and has hinted at in interviews. If you've spent any time on TikTok lately, you've probably seen videos about religious deconstruction, exvangelicals, and religious trauma. In essence, those of us who grew up "in the faith" or "in the church" have something to say <a href="https://www.insider.com/couple-part-of-true-love-waits-movement-ruined-sex-life-2022-10">about what we were taught</a> — and a lot about what we've had to unlearn.<h2>I felt like everything was my fault</h2>The white, male, Republican evangelical church I grew up in felt to me like one of the most toxic spaces in America, especially for teenage girls.We were taught that we were in charge of boys' feelings and actions. We needed to analyze every outfit we wore, making sure we didn't give any of our youth-group members any reason to be tempted — nothing too short, too tight, too transparent, or too suggestive. At church camp, boys could swim topless in trunks, while girls had to wear nonwhite T-shirts over our swimsuits. Our bodies were extreme sources of shame.Being in charge of boys' thoughts was not only exhausting but directly tied to how God felt about us. We didn't want to let God down and lead a brother in Christ astray. We had to make sure the guys didn't experience any lustful thoughts, and how we dressed (including how much makeup we wore) affected their spiritual well-being.Girls had a big burden to bear. Boys got a free pass — even though they were expected to one day be strong leaders of their heteronormative households.Divorce, sex before marriage, homosexuality, cursing, and so much more were sins — and it was on us, teenagers, to ensure we didn't "go down the wrong path." We were not taught how our bodies actually worked; we were commanded to "stay on the straight and narrow." We were expected to be actively and vocally pro-life, yet we were clueless about sex, aside from knowing that having it was sinful.<h2>It all changed for me when I became a mom</h2>I can't even begin to describe to you the damage that some religious teachings do to a person, especially a vulnerable child. I admit I didn't even realize how troublesome my evangelical-church-culture upbringing was until I became a parent. I was suddenly in charge of my children, including their spiritual teaching and wellness. Now what?Like many evangelicals who grew up in a patriarchal, white church, I've done lots of deconstructing. I've had to tear apart my faith, dividing it into what was truly God and what was from selfish men who ultimately wanted power, not freedom for their congregants, especially the teen girls. If we would have had true salvation, we would have been dangerous to the men in charge.Like Vuolo, I am still a Christian. But I'm a very different Christian than I was as a teenager. I pray that the work I've done to overcome wrong teachings transfers to my children understanding true Christianity and living a life of freedom through their faith.

I can relate to Jinger Duggar's religious trauma. I grew up in a white, mostly male evangelical church.

She wore a gray sleeveless top that exposed her shoulders, behind which sat a bookshelf home to several Funko Pop figurines. A mounted gray-and-white sneaker graced the wall.These may seem like mundane details. But hanging many types of art on the walls, exposing one's shoulders (as a woman), and watching mainstream movies are forbidden in the controversial Christian organization known as Institute in Basic Life Principles.<div type="image" title="Jinger Duggar" height="1996" width="2662" msid="97662044" hostid="261"></div>The IBLP was founded in 1961 by Bill Gothard, an American minister who promised to get his followers into heaven and based the organization on his beliefs, with requirements for women to wear only dresses and skirts and to bear children until they're physically unable to do so. As a child, Vuolo and her family introduced millions of television viewers to the organization in the 2004 Discovery special "14 Children and Pregnant Again!" and the later spin-off TLC reality "19 Kids and Counting" and "Counting On."For nearly two decades, Vuolo had been labeled a "rebel Duggar" on the internet because of choices she's made that go against the norm in her family, like leaving Arkansas and opting for fashions that go against IBLP teachings. Now 29, she's speaking with me about her journey to redefine what Christianity meant to her, as detailed in her new memoir, "Becoming Free Indeed."<div type="image" title="Jessa, Jinger, Jill, and Jana Duggar pose for a photo." height="2250" width="3000" msid="97662046" hostid="261"></div>She's hoping people who are still in the IBLP community or similarly restrictive religions will understand that sometimes the teachings of men, including the IBLP founder, Gothard, aren't the teachings of God. She's not seeking the spotlight again to not to feed the rumor mill surrounding her family but instead to publicly explain how she unlearned fear-based beliefs in hopes that her story helps others. On the way to free, Vuolo had to untangle her personal beliefs about faith from the ones she learned growing up. She said she realized, "Oh, wow, the Bible is silent in so many places where I thought it was speaking to me, but it was actually just a man telling me how I should live my life."Below, we talk about what her personal and family life looks like today, how she copes with social anxiety, and her feelings about her brother Josh's recent child-pornography conviction.<h2>Vuolo says she felt a 'responsibility' to speak her truth</h2><div type="image" title="Jinger Duggar and Jeremy Vuolo baby instagram" height="526" width="701" msid="97662048" hostid="261"></div>What inspired you to write "Becoming Free Indeed"? While I was at an IBLP conference, I met a lot of families who told me stories of kids who had just totally left Christianity or the faith altogether because they were so harmed by those teachings. I thought, "Should I write about this?" Because it's something that's also so deeply personal and hard to speak about publicly. My entire life was wrapped up in this teaching.But I felt like I had a responsibility to say something because I had not only grown up in this teaching, but I also promoted it with my sisters in our 2012 book, "<a href="https://www.insider.com/duggar-family-tiktok-duggartok-josh-duggar-trial-2021-12">Growing up Duggar</a>." I now strongly disagree with those teachings, so it was an opportunity for me to come back and say, "Hey, I don't believe that anymore."How has your life changed now that you're more open to experiencing modern culture? Oh, goodness, I didn't know any normal references from movies or culture and all of that. I've been playing catch-up. I remember <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/truman-show-delusion-real-paranoia-2020-1">watching "The Truman Show"</a> with Jeremy, and I was struck by that movie, like: "Huh, interesting. That feels like my life."<div type="image" title="Jim Bob Duggar Michelle Duggar" height="2033" width="2710" msid="97662050" hostid="261"></div>How did your parents react when you told them you were writing the book?I love my parents, and even though we have differences I've sought to share those with them along the way. So with this book, I for sure told them about it and said, "Hey, I'm writing this book." I know that since they still follow these teachings they may disagree on things, but I know that they just want what's best for me.I have talked with my parents about a lot of different differences we've had, and I've sought to just be up front with them and tell them, "Hey, this is where I lean towards in my understanding now." I'm also gracious because they gave me the best life possible. As parents, you make what you think at that time are the best decisions for your children.So, what was the end result of the conversation? You disagreed, but they supported you? Well, this has been my story from the start. I told them this is not about my family — it's just about me. I know you haven't spoken to him in two years, so I'm just wondering what you would want to say if you did speak to him?Well, I will say it's difficult for me to talk about that for sure because it's just tough. And my heart, it really just breaks for the victims and their families and all that they've gone through. And I'm so thankful that <a href="https://www.insider.com/josh-duggar-sentenced-years-prison-child-pornography-2022-5">justice has been served with my brother</a>, and ultimately I just would pray that he would be truly broken about what he's done. And so that's about all I want to say on it. My heart just breaks, and it's so hard to talk about.Is there anything you would want him to get from your book if he did read it?Well, I think the most important thing for any one of us is that we would come to know that we will each stand before God. But as of now, I think I'm really grateful that the justice system is set up for these situations and that justice is being served.<h2>Freeing herself from IBLP teachings has taught Vuolo to care less about what others think of her</h2><div type="image" title="Jeremy and Jinger Vuolo." height="2274" width="3024" msid="97662054" hostid="261"></div>One of the most vulnerable aspects of the book was when you talked about your <a href="https://www.insider.com/guides/health/mental-health/social-anxiety-disorder">social anxiety</a>. Can you give me an example of what goes through your mind?A lot of it was based on what I thought I was supposed to say. And so a lot of that has been me just trying to get outside of myself and not worry about what people think. Because I know people have strong opinions about my family, my life, and my upbringing.I still feel that fear at times, and then I realize, "Oh, that's all it is, is fear." I don't need to think about that. Because the more you think about it, then the bigger it feels and becomes. But getting outside of myself and trying to engage with others has been so helpful for me. Even just thinking, "OK, I know who I am and I don't need to change. I don't need to be anybody else but Jinger in this moment."What are some of the biggest misconceptions people have about you that you'd like to correct? I want them to see that we are real people too, with feelings, with lives that you may or may not understand. And it's just a beautiful thing to be able to share that with the public. And hopefully, other people can see, this is who Jinger is. I love my kids. <a href="https://www.insider.com/tiktok-mom-twelve-children-large-family-multiple-pregnancies-2022-4">I probably won't have 19 kids</a>, but I love them all. I want to be the best mom, be the best wife. Jeremy's a joy. He's so much fun. He makes me laugh more than anybody in the world. Have you had any more conversations with your parents about your choice to have a smaller family?I hope that they can just see my heart. At the end of the day, I think they can see that I want to live my life to glorify God. To be convicted by the word of God, not by a man's tradition or somebody who claims to speak for God but doesn't. That's how I live my life every day, and I want my girls to see that. I want everyone to see that, that I'm not going to be tossed about by all these different opinions.My life may look different than theirs, but it doesn't mean that we can't still love each other and be gracious towards one another, which I'm so thankful for. So we'll have differences. And I think that's the beauty of life.What situation has your new life found you in that you think your younger self might have found to be the most extreme? And what would you tell her now?I would say my younger self probably would've been crippled by fear because Bill Gothard taught her that life is a very delicate cause-and-effect sequence. If you go live your life by these principles, you'll be blessed. If you don't, your life will be one disaster after another. That's what I grew up believing. "If I wear pants, I'm going to be punished by God. If I listen to music with drums in it, I'm going to be punished by God." I'd tell my younger self, that's not true. Here's everything to know.<h2>What religion are the Duggars?</h2>The Duggars are Independent Fundamentalist Baptists. In addition to their religion, they follow a conservative Christian Organization known as the Institute of Basic Life Principals (IBLP). <h2>What do the Duggars and other members of the IBLP believe? </h2><div type="image" title="Jim Bob Duggar Michelle Duggar" height="2033" width="2710" msid="100707191" hostid="261" sizebytes="246016"></div>As the new Amazon docuseries "Shiny Happy People" details, the IBLP was founded by Bill Gothard in 1961 to promote a moral way of life. The organization was meant to support conservative Christians in a time of unrest, when civil rights movements were gaining traction, free love was being celebrated, and drug culture was more prominent. Though Gothard was not a minister or religious leader, he taught his followers that living a life worthy of God's love was best achieved by building your character around seven principles: design, authority, responsibility, ownership, suffering, freedom, and success.According to Jill Dillard, Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar's second-oldest daughter, and many other ex-IBLP members interviewed in "Shiny Happy People," authority was the most important and focused on principle of all. Members of the IBLP <a href="https://jesuswithoutbaggage.wordpress.com/2017/03/13/patriarchy-bill-gothard-and-the-umbrella-of-protection/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">operated under "umbrellas of protection."</a> Under this model, Christ holds the biggest umbrella, meaning the entity had the most authority over people's lives. Husbands hold the next umbrella of authority, giving them power over their wives, who hold one over their children and workers in the household. Children therefore have no authority over themselves or others — they are simply meant to obey their parents and Christ.<h2>Why are there so many children in the Duggar family? </h2><div type="image" title="duggar family" height="1331" width="1780" msid="100707194" hostid="261" sizebytes="229922"></div>The IBLP, as well as Jim Bob and Michelle, say they are "independent baptists." But when it comes to family planning, the idea that women should "be fruitful and multiply" comes from a religious moment called the Quiverfull Movement. The name of the movement is derived from a quote in the Old Testament that uses arrows as a metaphor for children: and says "Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them," <a href="https://people.com/tv/duggar-scandal-the-19-kids-and-counting-stars-connection-to-quiverfull/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according to People</a>.According to multiple sources, <a href="https://www.insider.com/jinger-duggar-free-religious-beliefs-josh-duggar-truly-broken-crimes-2023-1">including Jinger Voulo's 2023 memoir</a>, members of the IBLP don't believe in birth control, nor do they believe in anyone's right to plan the size of their family. In Vuolo's book, read by Insider, she said that under Gothard's teachings, women were also encouraged to carry pregnancies as long as their bodies would allow them to, even if doing so meant putting their own health at risk.In "Shiny Happy People," many former members of the IBLP cited Michael and Debi Pearl's book "To Train Up a Child" as Gothard's preferred resource for child-rearing. The book teaches parents how to spank and hit their children using "extreme measures" without getting in trouble with the law.In archive footage in the documentary, Michelle describes using a "blanket technique" to teach her children obedience. Ex-IBLP members then describe parents putting children on a blanket with a toy out of their reach. When the child reaches for the toy on their own, parents would physically discourage them from grabbing it until they learned to obey their parents' commands. <h2>What type of education do the Duggar children have?</h2><div type="image" title="Jana Duggar" height="971" width="1295" msid="100707200" hostid="261" sizebytes="58652"></div>As viewers know from watching the Duggars' reality shows, Duggar children were homeschooled by Michelle and the oldest women in the family. But what are they taught? According to "Shiny Happy People," members of the IBLP follow a curriculum developed by Gothard called the Advanced Training Insitute, or the ATI. Under this program, children learn through "wisdom booklets" based on the Sermon on the Mount instead of science. According to an image of one of these booklets that's featured in "Shiny Happy People," they feature misinformation, such as claims that pubic lice is transmitted through "immorality."Subjects in the documentary said that as children got older, their parents sent them to one of Gothard's many centers around the country to do acts of service. At some of those centers, children were allegedly forced to do 16 to 18 hours of manual labor per day. According to "Shiny Happy People," the ATI is no longer considered a curriculum by the IBLP. Instead, you can buy booklets online as a Bible study.<h2>What are some other teachings of the IBLP? </h2>As followers of the Duggars know, the IBLP had certain modesty standards for women. For example, they should only ever wear long skirts or dresses — never pants. They should also always cover their arms and never wear high heels. According to Amazon's documentary and members of the Duggar family themselves, these rules were mostly put in place so that a woman's clothing would never distract or tempt a man. On the show, older daughters like Jill and Jinger were often assigned younger children that they were responsible for. It's framed as a "buddy system." But in "Shiny Happy People," women said that they were expected to parent their younger siblings, and in some cases were responsible for infants when they were only 11 years old. Teenagers in the IBLP are expected to enter into "courtship" with the end goal being marriage. They are not allowed to casually date. During a courtship, a third party (usually a sibling, as seen on TLC) accompanies couples on dates. The spectator is meant to be a buffer for the couple, so that they don't kiss each other (or more) before marriage and that they only hug each other from the side, so that the front of their bodies don't touch. Members of the Duggar family were allowed to define their own rules of courtship with Jim Bob and Michelle's approval. So, some couples chose to hold hands before marriage, for example. Sources in "Shiny Happy People," also said that most of the mainstream entertainment they consumed and toys they played with had to be IBLP approved. Gothard reportedly believed that the creator of Cabbage Patch dolls was a warlock and that the dolls were demons. Alongside her husband Derek, Jill recalls feeling pressure to forgive her brother, Josh Duggar, pubically in 2015, when reports that he molested four of his sisters in 2003 became public. She says she regrets appearing on a <a href="https://www.insider.com/josh-duggar-molestation-allegations-child-pornography-charges-timeline-2021-5#june-3-2015-the-duggar-parents-appear-on-a-fox-news-special-acknowledging-that-four-of-joshs-victims-were-their-daughters-they-say-they-believe-they-can-save-their-tlc-show-12">Fox News special.</a>The Dillards also describe being goaded into filming the birth of their first child for TLC. They seem like there's no fights, there's no problems, there's no drama. But perfection is something you can never really get to. It's a level that doesn't exist. I'm just excited that all of these families and the IBLP survivors feel validated that abuse did take place, but also to see that no one is perfect. I do believe that IBLP is a cult. It's just so sad that in this case, the IBLP used the Lord's name as a cover. Not every Christian is like that. I am strong in my faith. I've always been strong in my faith, and I just know that as humans, we completely fail. And IBLP members failed their children, but that doesn't mean all Christians are like that. Sometimes it's OK to be a rebel.Growing up with your cousins, did you ever attend an IBLP event and experience any type of abuse like what was described in "Shiny Happy People?"I went to a vacation Bible school in fourth or fifth grade. In order to leave, you had to recite scripture word for word to the teacher. And I was one of the last kids to leave because I was like, "Why do I have to memorize this scripture?" It's different if I want to memorize a Bible scripture from my heart and for something that I want in my head. But it's another if you're going to use scripture as a tool to keep kids locked in a room.I got really nervous because I couldn't leave and get to my mom because I didn't know the scripture well enough. I'd never seen anyone use Bible scripture as a tool or a weapon.Your cousin Jill Duggar Dillard said in "Shiny Happy People" that neither set of her grandparents understood why her mother and father were having so many children. From your perspective at family gatherings, what would your grandparents say? My grandma would just be like, "Whoa, whoa, that's a lot." And then my grandpa — he was way more outspoken and he had an anger issue. He said what was on his mind. My aunt and uncle would be like, "We're pregnant with number 15." And my grandpa would be like, "All right. And that's it." So it was like a running joke. He loved his grandkids, though.One of the most compelling parts of the documentary was when you and other subjects explained how discipline worked in the IBLP and that spanking a child, sometimes with objects, was called "encouragement." Was there any time you felt fearful for your safety while visiting your Uncle Jim Bob and Aunt Michelle? I might be writing a book, so I want to keep some of my stories for that.But I will say yes, there were times that I was fearful. It's interesting — I've never heard my aunt yell, not one time in her entire life have I ever heard her yell. But the reflection of her voice, and how calm and sweet she is with that whole tone, it doesn't match the experience of what could have been taking place.On a bit of a lighter note, in the series, you mentioned that your cousins once told you about a bonfire they had burning Disney items. Did you go to that bonfire or do you have memories of talking about Disney or popular culture with them? Disney wasn't something that I could bring up. It was just really, really frowned upon. I wasn't there for the bonfire because I thought it was really freaky if I'm going to be honest. I thought it was really extreme, but I do remember they asked me if I had wanted to burn anything, and I was like, "What is happening?
