The state of Jharkhand has 14 Lok Sabha constituencies in total. Among these seats one is reserved for the Scheduled castes. And five seats are hallmarked for the Scheduled Tribes. In 2014 general elections for the parliament, Jharkhand gave 12 out of 14 seats to the BJP which emerged as a single strong party from the state proudly marching to form the government in the center. Two seats were bagged by JMM, the native party that has been gaining a strong foothold in the state over the past. Some of the constituencies are turning highly interesting in the state and the results can tell us what surprises are in store. During the last Lok Sabha elections, BJP’s Ravindra Kumar Pandey won from the Giridih Lok Sabha seat pushing back the prospects of JMM’s Jagarnath Mahto. This time both are seen once again in the scene, but this time Jagarnath Mahto is contesting as a candidate representing the grand alliance. From Dhanbad Lok Sabha constituency, Congress is fielding Kirti Azad, a BJP rebel who will fight with Pashupati Nath Singh of the BJP. In the Singhbhum seat, there is a stiff fight between Laxman Giluva of the BJP and Geeta Kora of Congress for the Lok Sabha elections 2019.

A lacklustre show by the Congress in Bihar seems to have proved costly for the opposition grand alliance, as it dragged down the RJD too from the government formation in the Hindi heartland state. While the Congress lost ground in Bihar, it also suffered significant electoral losses in Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat, losing a majority of bypolls in key states that saw the BJP surging ahead. <div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="79142084" title="Bihar Election Results 2020: With 40 seats still hanging in the balance, NDA widens its lead but RJD continues to be the single largest party" mstype="2" mssubtype="0"></div> The Congress also alleged foul play in elections accusing the ruling NDA of misuse of power. The Congress also went to the EC making the allegations that their candidates were not given certificates of victory despite winning. "Democracy is being murdered and mandate being abducted in Bihar," Surjewala tweeted in Hindi citing examples of seats where their party candidate had won but not given certificates of victory. Senior party leaders again blamed EVMs for the losses, with former Madhya Pradesh chief minister Digvijaya Singh and Dalit leader Udit Raj claiming that the electronic voting machines (EVMs) can be hacked and tampered with, though their party colleague Karti Chidambaram said the EVM system is accurate and dependable, and "it's time to stop blaming the EVM". "What is the reason that no developed country is using EVMs... if a chip is there, then it is not tamper-proof," Singh said, alleging "selective" rigging. In Bihar, the Congress's tally dropped from 27 in 2015 to 19 as per the latest trends available, that saw the RJD-led grand alliance narrowly lag behind the BJP-led NDA. Though the Congress improved its vote share from 6.66 per cent in 2015 to nearly 9.5 per cent in this election, its strike rate this time was less than 30 per cent as against 66 percent last time. The grand old party had contested in 70 seats this time with its ally RJD contesting in the majority seats. In 2015, the Congress had contested in 41 seats. On their part, Congress sources said it would be "unfair" to say that the party fared poorly as it contested those seats in Bihar which were traditionally NDA strongholds and the JDU-BJP combine had a strike rate of over 95 in the past. Party insiders said the seats it contested also did not have the advantage of Muslim-Yadav combination and were never contested by it earlier. The presence of AIMIM also cost the Congress dearly as the Asaduddin Owaisi-led outfit won five seats and cost the Mhagathbandhan some 15-odd seats, insiders said. The RJD had also not won those seats since 1990, a leader claimed, adding that even in 2015 when RJD-JDU-Cong fought as part of 'Mahagathbandhan', the Congress had won 23 out of 32 seats from this area. Leaders said the party failed to put up a strong base in Bihar in the last two years after its former Bihar chief Ashok Choudhary defected to the JDU, and could not consolidate its position riding on the RJD support-base. Shiv Sena, an ally of Congress in Maharashtra, also accused the Congress of being the "weak-link" and dragging down the RJD. Sena's Sanjay Raut said had the Congress performed better, Tejaswi Yadav would have been declared CM by now. Of the 28 seats in Madhya Pradesh, the party lost 19 seats to the BJP and was leading in 8 seats it was holding, with Congress rebel Jyotiraditya Scindia posting big gains for the saffron party. In UP and Gujarat, the Congress drew a blank in 15 bypoll seats in Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh. However, one consolation for the Congress was its victory in bypolls in Haryana's Baroda seat, where the BJP is in power. The Congress held on to its Baroda assembly seat in the bypoll necessitated after the death of its MLA Shri Krishan Hooda. The Congress also won one seat each in Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand in bypolls held today.

The Kingmakers Apart from its traditional rival, the Congress Party-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA), the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is challenged by Mahgathbandhan or a Grand Alliance that includes 12 political parties. It is led by Mayawati of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), and <keyword id="6355031" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="akhilesh-yadav">Akhilesh Yadav</keyword> of <keyword id="6354265" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="samajwadi-party">Samajwadi Party</keyword> (SP), who were former foes turned friends; proving yet again politics makes strange bedfellows. These are the clear sides in the election so far and one of the leaders is likely to become the next Prime Minister. However, the BJD, the YSR Congress, its state rival TDP, and the Telegana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) led by K Chandrashekhar Rao who are yet to pick sides, will have fewer seats but an outsized say in deciding the winner of this Lok Sabha election, in the case of an utterly fractured mandate. The three states put together have 86 seats at stake in the Lok Sabha. Even half of those seats will wield significant power in case any of the other three national coalitions fail to cross the halfway mark. ‘Special’ unity The one factor binding four out of the five regional parties is the demand for ‘special status’ for their respective states. Special status is given to states with historic disadvantages be it geographic issues like tough terrains or unviable state finances. It provides them with autonomy like the ability to establish development boards, and decide on reservations. Special status has also been the bone of contention between BJP and TDP. TDP head Chandrababu Naidu broke away from the NDA, after BJP refused the status, as Naidu re-builds the state after Telangana split from AP. What is bringing these parties together is a recent comment from the union finance minister and BJP leader Arun Jaitley that categorically dismissed the demand for <a href="http://www.newindianexpress.com/business/2019/apr/04/arun-jaitley-against-special-status-special-financial-packages-for-states-1960238.html">special status for AP</a>, saying the ‘time for seeking special status is over’. While JD(U) has denied any attempt to break away from the NDA, it has enough common ground with the other four parties that can influence government formation. This may be the prelude to hectic parleys after the results on May 23.
