<ul class="summary-list"><li>Since June 19, the <keyword id="6354656" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="fda">FDA</keyword> has been warning consumers of dangerous hand sanitizers that contain the fatal chemical methanol. Methanol is a type of alcohol that can be deadly if ingested or absorbed through the skin.</li><li>The FDA found some <keyword id="424454" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="hand-sanitizer">hand sanitizer</keyword> producers putting it into their products. In some cases, methanol wasn't a listed ingredient. In other cases, sanitizers lacked germ-killing ingredients.</li><li>Here are all of the hand sanitizers the FDA has warned consumers of so far due to methanol, or lack of active ingredients like isopropyl alcohol.</li></ul>Since June 19, the FDA has been building a list of hand sanitizers that they say could <a href="https://www.insider.com/fda-warns-consumers-poisonous-chemical-methanol-hand-sanitizer-2020-6">contain the deadly chemical methanol</a>, or that lacked enough active bacteria-killing ingredients, like isopropyl alcohol.As hand sanitizer production increased during the pandemic, more companies pivoted to producing the high-demand product. Ethanol and isopropyl alcohol, the two types of alcohol commonly found in sanitizers and the ingredients that make them effective at killing germs, were in short supply.That's why the FDA believes some producers starting swapping in methanol, another type of alcohol, and an ingredient used to produce antifreeze and fuel.Unlike ethanol and isopropyl alcohol, <a href="https://www.insider.com/fda-warns-consumers-poisonous-chemical-methanol-hand-sanitizer-2020-6">methanol can be deadly</a> when inhaled or absorbed into the bloodstream through your skin. In the United States, any product that contains more than 4% methanol must be <a href="https://bioenergyinternational.com/biochemicals-materials/methanol-not-effective-or-safe-hand-sanitizer-or-disinfectant-for-covid-19-cautions-methanol-institute">labeled as "poison."</a>That's why <keyword id="6354750" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="health">health</keyword> officials flagged nine methanol-containing hand sanitizers that all came from one producer in Mexico. In many cases, these products listed ethanol as the effective ingredient, but once the FDA tested them, they were <a href="https://www.fda.gov/drugs/drug-safety-and-availability/fda-updates-hand-sanitizers-methanol">found to contain methanol</a>. But since then, more dangerous hand santizers have emerged, and the FDA said it will <a href="https://www.fda.gov/news-events/press-announcements/coronavirus-covid-19-update-fda-reiterates-warning-about-dangerous-alcohol-based-hand-sanitizers">continue to flag these products</a> to consumers. But they may soon have to contend with heavy US and UK naval firepower already in the region. The US sent its USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier and attached strike group to the region in May. This represents the world's most potent unit of naval power, with the aircraft carrier's formidable air wing, a cruiser, four destroyers, a cruiser, and support ships.The USS Boxer, a smaller carrier for AV-8B Harrier jets and helicopters, is also operating nearby and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/pentagon-confirms-the-uss-boxer-shot-down-an-iranian-drone-2019-7">said it recently downed an Iranian drone</a>. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/iran-says-us-shot-down-own-drone-mistake-2019-7">Iran denied this</a> and posted video of one of its drones landing to challenge the US's narrative, although it's unclear if Iran's footage proves anything.The UK has the HMS Montrose on station, which immediately following the seizure of the tankers was broadcasting its location and sailing through the Strait of Hormuz. The <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/uk-ships-to-gulf-iran-2019-7">UK has another two warships on the way</a>.Previously, the UK's Montrose got into a standoff with Iranian gunboats trying to veer an oil tanker called the "British Heritage" into Iran's waters. The UK's top leaders on Friday held an emergency meeting to decide how to proceed. Iran frequently talks about sinking US aircraft carriers, and its navy holds the operational goal of destroying the US Navy, but Sim Tack, a researcher at Stratfor, a geopolitical consulting company, told Business Insider that the US had deployed its carrier smartly. "The US is being very smart about how it's deploying its carrier. It prefers to keep its carrier in the Arabian Sea rather than the Persian Gulf.
