As in 2022, gold is expected to log double digit gains this year as per indications, said experts. "The yellow metal has already posted over three per cent gains in the month of January, 2023. The current setup seems to indicate a re-run of 2022. Gold seems to be poised to open a new chapter in term of its price trajectory," Emkay Global Financial Services said in a report. According to Quantum Mutual Fund report, gold started the new year on a cheery note, up about six per cent in January in dollar terms and about four per cent in rupee terms. Underpinning the rally was annual <keyword id="22195" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="inflation" source="Orion">inflation</keyword> in the US slowing for a sixth straight month to 6.5 per cent in December, raising hopes of smaller rate hikes from the Federal Reserve in Q1'23 and rate cuts later in the year, Quantum Mutual Fund said. In the last one year, gold purchases in the international markets was about 4,000 tonne of which 1,400 tonne took place in the last quarter, said Emkay Global. Apart from institutional buying, jewellery demand in China revived with the Covid restrictions being relaxed there. China is one of the biggest consumers of gold, accounting for over 30 per cent of global jewellery demand, Emkay Global said. "The yellow metal benefitted from a softer USD environment and lower US Treasury yields. Physical demand from China during the Lunar New Year celebrations, central bank gold buying and increase in net long positioning in gold by global money managers also supported prices,a Quantum Mutual Fund said. The general expectation that there will be a slowdown in economic activity in the major economies also is helping gold though the high inflation never propelled gold to higher levels, said Emkay Global. In India, with a duty cut now out of the picture for the foreseeable future, down moves in gold on account of that are no longer expected. But prices could see some headwinds from developments on the <keyword id="442659" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="US-monetary-policy" source="Orion">US monetary policy</keyword> front. Mumbai, May 11 () India Ratings and Research (Ind-Ra) on Monday said it expects jewellery sales to decline by 25 per cent in 2020-21 (April-March) on account of over 40 days of lockdown following COVID-19 pandemic and overall reduction in disposable income. Jewellery demand, which is primarily driven by marriage season and a couple of festivals in the first quarter, has been significantly washed out due to the ongoing nationwide lockdown, Ind-Ra said in a report. The demand for retail jewellery will remain muted in 1HFY21 (April-September), however, a sharp recovery is expected in the third quarter of FY21 (October-December) due to the festive and wedding season. Gold jewellery demand had already slowed down in FY20 in terms of tonnage and revenue due to the economic slowdown and increased gold prices, it said. The possibility of a recovery of demand in FY21 has been derailed by the COVID-19 led lockdown and the subsequent continued economic slowdown in the country, it added. Ind-Ra already has revised its FY21 GDP growth twice since January 2020 to 1.9 per cent, and a further downward revision is possible if the pandemic continues to evolve, it said. This can have a prolonged negative impact on gold demand because of the possibility of a further reduction in the overall discretionary spend. As a result, Ind-Ra said, there is likely to be an overall 25 per cent year-on-year decline in retail jewellery revenues in this financial year. However, business from rural areas and weddings may remain resilient, it said, adding that from the fourth quarter of FY21 (January-March), sales are likely to improve due to the base effect and expected normalisation in economic activities. However, any further lockdown and prolonged impact of COVID-19 will lead to a further downward revision of estimates, it added. The volatility in gold prices is also expected to hurt consumer sentiments, the report said. In FY20, gold prices soared amid the worsening US-China trade war and interest rate cuts by various central banks worldwide. In FY21 till date, gold prices have remained high, amid the COVID-19 outbreak and its adverse impact on economic activity and global markets, it said. Investors across the world are fleeing to safer investments including gold, Ind-Ra said, adding that domestic jewellery and gold consumer demand is dependent on a specific budget, thus rising gold prices will have a negative impact on the overall demand in the short term. Additionally, it said the share of old gold purchases as a percentage of total purchases by jewellers could increase from around 35 per cent for large organised jewellers. Thus, the total gold import of India, which is primarily driven by jewellery demand, is also likely to drop to a decade-low in FY21. In the long-term, however, Ind-Ra believes that jewellery demand will be supported by the rise in savings at the hand of salaried middle-class and upper-middle class end-users due to postponement of purchases and cancellation of travel or tourism plans among other reasons. However, it remains to be seen whether such savings would add to jewellery demand in 2HFY21 (October-March) or will be used in compensating loss of income or saved for emergency situations, it said. The overall long-term demand outlook remains upbeat because gold remains to be an attractive investment destination, it said. COVID-19: Ind-Ra sees jewellery sales declining 25 pc in FY21

The demand for <keyword id="18712" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gold" source="Orion">gold</keyword> went up by 14 per cent to 191.7 ton in India during the third quarter of this calendar year, said the <keyword id="113718" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="world-gold-council" source="Orion">World Gold Council</keyword> (WGC) on Tuesday. According to the WGC, the gold demand in India was at 191.7 ton (value ₹85,010 crore) during Q3 2022 as against 168 ton (₹71,630 crore) of the corresponding period in 2021. The jewellery demand for the period under review was at 146.2 ton up from 125.1 ton the previous year. On the other hand, the total investment demand for Q3 2022 at 45.4 ton in comparison to 42.9 ton in Q3 2021. The recycled gold showed a downward trend in Q3 2022 with 16 ton as compared to 20.7 ton in Q3 2021. For the nine months of 2022 the gold demand stood at 497.8 ton (jewellery 380.7 ton, investment 117.1 ton) as compared to 453.5 ton (jewellery 345.9 ton investment 107.6 ton "India's total gold demand in Q3 2022 at 191.7 tonnes is a 14 per cent increase over last year. This reflects better-than expected performance and strong consumer interest, helping year-to-date demand return to pre-Covid levels," said Somasundaram P.R., Regional CEO, India, WGC. Credit expansion added impetus to this demand, with bank loan growth touching a nine-year high by quarter-end. He said the recovery in gold jewellery demand was primarily driven by urban India, more specifically Southern parts, underpinned by robust economic activities with a 17 per cent y-o-y increase in tonnage terms. Rural demand however, was impacted by seasonal effect (monsoons) and inflation. On the other hand, Indian bar and coin demand also saw a six per cent y-o-y improvement to 45.4 ton, he added. "Looking ahead, Indian retail investment is likely to continue to benefit from safe-haven demand amid rising interest rates and a weakening rupee. There's optimism in the overall outlook for the rest of the year with weddings and Diwali demand in Q4, but it is unlikely to match last year's record-breaking Q4. Our gold demand estimate for the full year is around 750-800 ton similar to last year," Somasundaram said. At the global level, WGC said the demand for the yellow metal (excluding OTC) in the third quarter of 2022 hit 1,181 ton, up 28 per cent year-on-year. Strong demand pushed the year-to-date total to its pre-Covid levels. Gold demand was bolstered by the consumers and central banks, although there was a notable contraction in investment demand. According to WGC, investment was down 47 per cent year-on-year, as exchange traded fund (ETF) investors responded to a challenging combination of markedly higher interest rates and a strong US dollar with significant outflows of 227 ton. These movements, alongside weakness in OTC demand and negative sentiment in futures markets, hampered gold's price performance -- contributing to an eight per cent quarter-on-quarter drop in the price during Q3 2022. Just as consumer gold demand firmed, central bank buying picked up significantly with estimated record purchases of nearly 400 t in the third quarter, said WGC. "Looking ahead, we anticipate central bank buying and retail investment to remain strong and that could help offset potential declines in OTC and ETF investment that may prevail if the dollar strength persists. We also expect to see jewellery demand continue to perform strongly in some regions such as India and Southeast Asia, while the technology sector will likely witness further decline in the face of economic deceleration," Louise Street, Senior Markets Analyst said. Gold demand went up by 14% in Q3: World Gold Council

For the most part, Wall Street commodities analysts <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/morgan-stanley-gold-bear-market-to-resume-2014-4">remain firmly bearish</a> on the yellow metal in the near term.
However, no one can ignore the economic rise of China, where the consumers' hunger for gold is only becoming increasingly voracious.
"The next six years are expected to see China's middle class grow by over 60%, or 200m people, to a total of 500 million," <a href="http://www.gold.org/supply-and-demand/china-report">write the analysts at the World Gold Council</a>. "Comparing this to the total population of the US, which stands at 319m, puts the size of this new market of affluent consumers, with the propensity to buy gold, in perspective. In addition to these newly emerging middle classes, rising real incomes, a deepening pool of private savings and rapid urbanisation across China suggest that the outlook for gold jewellery and investment demand in the next four years will remain strong."
The WGC just published massive amounts of research on the supply and demand dynamics of gold in China.
Here are six key facts that they highlight (verbatim:

<li>China's continuing urbanisation means that it now has 170 cities with more than one million inhabitants - within these cities, the middle classes currently number 300million and are set to grow to 500million by 2020. Demand for gold amongst those with a greater disposable income and limited investment opportunities will continue to grow.</li>
<li>Chinese savings levels remain high - there is an estimated US$7.5 trillion in Chinese bank accounts and household allocations to gold remain small, around $300bn. Gold is seen as a stable, accessible investment by consumers, particularly in the light of rising house prices and a lack of alternative savings options. Chinese investors have a preference for physical gold over paper, with investment focused on small bars, gift bars or Gold Accumulation Plans (GAPs). New gold investment products mean that medium term demand for bars and coins could reach close to 500t by 2017 - a rise of nearly 25% above its record level last year.</li>
<li>China has become the world's number one jewellery market, nearly trebling in size over the past decade - at 669t in 2013, it accounts for 30% of global jewellery demand. Estimates suggest that demand will continue to grow and reach 780t by 2017. There are now over 100,000 retail outlets selling 24k gold and thousands of manufacturers nationwide.</li>
<li>Consumer sentiment toward gold is unwavering - although 40% of jewellery consumption relates to weddings, the appetite for gold in China goes beyond occasions and gift giving. 80% of consumers surveyed for this report planned to maintain or increase their spending on 24-carat gold jewellery over the next 12 months believing that gold will hold its long-term value and because they expect to have a higher level of disposable income.</li>
<li>Chinese electronics demand for gold will see small gains in the next four years - industrial demand has grown with electronics being the key driver (climbing from 16t in 2003 to 66t in 2013. China is also the leading market for gold related patents such as the use of nanogold in healthcare.</li>
<li>Official gold holdings in China totalled 1,054t at the end of 2013making the country the world's sixth largest holder of bullion- based on this declared stock, gold represents 1% of China's total official reserves (down from a peak of almost 2% in 2012) due to the rapid growth of the country's foreign exchange holdings which reached around US$3.8 trillion at the end of 2013. Speculation continues as to whether the Chinese government has increased its gold holdings.</li>
<li>China has gone from being a minor producer to the world's largest source of mined gold - in the past ten years production has doubled from 217t to 437t.</li>

The value of her 21,280.300 grams of gold jewellery could not be ascertained as it was with the Karnataka government treasury in connection with the disproportionate assets case. She had, however, declared possession of 1,250 kg of silver articles valued at Rs 3,12,50,000. 
 
According to the affidavit filed for the RK Nagar constituency for the 2016 elections, Jayalalithaa owns movable assets worth Rs 41.63 crore and immovable assets Rs 72.09 crore. Jayalalithaa had made investments in five firms as a 'partner', which are together worth Rs 27.44 crore. These include Shri Jaya Publications, Sasi Enterprises, Kodanad Estate, Royal Valley Floritech Exports and Green T Estate, the affidavit stated. 
 
As per the last declaration, she had Rs 41,000 cash in hand, listed Rs 2.04 crore as liabilities and declared agriculture in the profession-occupation column.
