So we'll see May 1."<h2>Ramos first put gloves on at 4 years old</h2>Boxing has been a part of the Ramos family for generations. His father and uncles boxed and coached, and he grew up with gloves on.Wanting to mirror the older men in his family, Ramos boxed for a short while from 4 years old, but because he was not legally permitted to compete at such a young age, he lost interest in training without a purpose.That changed at 8, and his father started matching him up with older kids. At that age, young Jesus was throwing leather with 10- and 11-year-olds - adolescents who were stronger than he was, taller, and with longer arms."This always happened," he smiled. "When you're that age, the age gap feels so much more. Sometimes at 10, I'd be sparring 15-year-olds."But my dad was always matching me up with fighters who had hundreds of fights. He would just do that, so I'd have that experience and learn. I thank him because I am where I am because of that."He's always been good for preparing me. Even when I was 15, sparring pro fighters a lot older and more experienced was good preparation for when I was going to turn pro - when I'd be ready for anything."Throughout his teens, boxing was always a hot topic at home. They'd train during the day, eat together, and watch boxing at night - booking time in the calendar for Juan Manuel Marquez, Juan Diaz, and Chris Arreola fight nights.At 17, Ramos turned pro and finished each of his first nine opponents. It all served as a confidence booster. Not only was the training from his family working, but it was also seemingly working with ease."My father would always tell me I had power when he held the mitts, but I never really believed him because he's my dad."But when I turned pro and saw these guys start falling when I wasn't even forcing these knockouts, I was like, impressed with myself."I never wanted to rely on it and not let that take me away from my fundamentals. I train like if I had pillow hands. I like to stick to my basics, do everything right. They train seven days out of the week, and that's what we implemented in this camp and other camps - to work even harder."The sparring sessions were intense. You've got to think in there with Terence Crawford. You can't sleep at all, you have to be creative because being basic won't make you hit him."It was exhausting," he said. "Not just the physical part of being in the ring with him, but the mental."And on Canelo and Floyd, Ramos said: "The important lesson learned from them is about the composure."It's like they're not even boxing even though there's a guy in there trying to take their heads off. They're just composed, sticking to their gameplan, and breaking their opponent down."Nowadays, it's about fighters throwing punches with no meaning, and I don't like that."I like my opponent to be broken down a little more so in the second round, third, he might be strong, but by the fifth, sixth, my work is going to have had an effect on him, and he won't be the same fighter he was at the start."That's the purpose for boxing. Water levels are so low in some regions that you can see the effects from space.Bustillos Lagoon in northern Mexico, for example, is at 50% of its typical capacity. With limited water, people in Chihuahua have watched their crops and livestock wither.It's not just Bustillos Lagoon, though. Over 85% of the country was affected by the drought in May, with some areas having <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rainwater-no-longer-safe-to-drink-anywhere-study-forever-chemicals-2022-8">little rainfall</a> since the end of 2022, according to the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.climate.gov/news-features/event-tracker/multi-year-drought-and-heat-waves-across-mexico-2024">National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration</a>.You can see more images of drought-ridden Mexican lakes in the video below.The drought, "created a pretty big deficit in both the northwest and the south-central parts of the country in terms of lack of precipitation," Derek Vollmer, director of Waterscapes at WWF, told Business Insider.The view from space is bleak, but the images from the ground show an even grimmer reality for the people, plants, and animals coping with the drought.Some farmers can't provide adequate water for their livestock, and cows and donkeys have died during the hot and arid months. Last year, El Niño failed to bring its usual precipitation to the north, and a weak La Niña affected rain levels in the south and central regions. The first half of this year was also <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/pervasive-drought-threatens-tourism-industry-in-sicily-italy-2024-7">very dry</a>, adding to the problem, according to NOAA.<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hurricane-category-6-wind-speed-prediction-2024-2">Tropical storms</a> in June brought some relief to the central and southwest regions but northwest Mexico is still in a drought.Over half of Mexico's reservoirs are at or below 50%, right now. "It takes a lot of additional precipitation to build that back up," Vollmer said. "One good set of rain isn't going to take places out of drought."Vollmer said drier conditions could become more permanent in some regions. Droughts are classified based on historical averages, he said, but "we're moving into new conditions." What was once a drought may now be the new normal.There are some potential measures to help safeguard against future droughts. Cool heads, in rivalries like these, often prevail.Benavidez roughed Plant up, shoved him, and fought with spice. Plant, meanwhile, clinched whenever the going got tough, ensuring the referee Kenny Bayless needed no second invitation to inject himself into the bout.Plant patiently waited for his openings, was accurate with his output, and boxed behind his jab — a punch as offensive as it was defensive in a fight like this.He was the busier fighter in the first half of the bout, confounded Benavidez with movement, and sought to frustrate him with clean shots and break up his opponent's spiteful punching by initiating clinches.Benavidez, by contrast, would throw with such bad intentions it was like he was screaming obscenities with every power punch. Bang — eff you! Whack — and everything you stand for!While Plant's boxing got him through the first half of the fight, his guard was looser in the second half just as Benavidez showed there were levels to his engine.The Arizona slugger's violence became more pronounced toward the championship rounds, culminating with such brutal shots — mostly left hooks to both the body and the jaw — that it begged questions as to how Plant was still standing, and whether his coach Stephen 'Breadman' Edwards would withdraw him from the contest.In the 10th round it became clear the ring was Benavidez's world, Plant was just living in it, and there was nothing anybody could do to prevent the undefeated fighter from claiming yet another victory.He threw a fight-high 85 punches in the 10th, according to Compubox data sent to Insider, and continued to out-punch Plant in the 11th and 12th rounds.<div type="image" title="David Benavidez." height="1333" width="2000" msid="99010450" hostid="261" sizebytes="141346"></div>When it mattered most — the rounds to close the show and put a punctuation mark on the performance — Benavidez only grew stronger, and earned his win with scores of 115-113, 116-112, and a somewhat wide 117-111, according to the three ringside judges."I know there was a lot said between us but in the end we settled this like men," said Benavidez after the fight, deciding to bury the rivalry rather than Plant himself."He's a helluva fighter. Despite its poor form, however, the Ligue 1 giant still qualified for the tournament's knockout stages on the night courtesy of Leipzig's 5-0 win against Brugge, which means Mauricio Pochettino's side can no longer be overtaken in second place in Group A."A bit disappointed but the qualification is there.
