<ul class="summary-list"><li>An accused Capitol rioter rejected the justice system's authority during his first court appearance.</li><li>James Beeks was arrested earlier this month in connection to the January 6 attack.</li></ul><p>One of the more bizarre January 6 cases delved further into the peculiar when an accused Capitol rioter who was arrested while touring in a Broadway production of "<keyword id="12599600" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="jesus-christ-superstar" source="Orion">Jesus Christ Superstar</keyword>" earlier this month attended his first court hearing on Monday.</p><p><a href="https://www.justice.gov/usao-dc/pr/florida-man-arrested-charges-related-jan-6-capitol-breach">James Beeks</a>, an actor who was playing Judas in the musical production, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jesus-christ-superstar-actor-charged-capitol-riot-oath-keeper-2021-11">was arrested in Milwaukee last week on charges related to the Capitol riot</a> after investigators attended two performances of the show to find him.</p><p><a href="https://www.justice.gov/usao-dc/press-release/file/1451311/download">Prosecutors said</a> the 49-year-old introduced himself to a group of Oath Keepers two weeks before the insurrection and joined them on the morning of January 6, where he donned a Michael Jackson tour jacket and carried a shield into the Capitol as part of a dozen Oath Keepers who were among some of the first to breach the building.</p><p>Appearing in court for the first time Monday, Beeks narrowly avoided pretrial detainment after he claimed "divine authority" in an attempt to reject the United States' authority over him.</p><p>The actor's antics irritated Chief Judge Beryl Howell of the U.S. District Court in Washington, DC, when he declined to represent himself, saying, "I cannot represent myself because I am myself. I reserve all rights at all times and waive none, ever," according to <a href="https://www.politico.com/news/2021/11/29/judge-jan-6-defendant-broadway-actor-523447">Politico</a>. </p><p>The judge had little patience for his conspiracy theory musings.</p><p>"That's all gobbledygook. I have no idea what you're saying," Howell reportedly responded.</p><p>Howell claimed that Beeks' refusal to acknowledge the US justice system, as well as two affidavits he attempted to submit to the court, suggested the actor subscribed to a "<keyword id="12635750" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="sovereign-citizen" source="Orion">sovereign citizen</keyword>" theory, though Beeks rejected the characterization. </p><p>Subscribers to the pseudoscience movement believe that "they — not judges, juries, law enforcement or elected officials — should decide which laws to obey and which to ignore," according to <a href="https://www.splcenter.org/fighting-hate/extremist-files/ideology/sovereign-citizens-movement">the Southern Poverty Law Center</a>. The movement has racist and antisemitic roots and is predicated upon a decades-old conspiracy theory that posits the US government's legal system, known as common law, was secretly replaced by admiralty law, which governs the sea and international commerce, the SPLC said. </p><p>"I'm not a sovereign citizen. There's no such thing. That's an oxymoron and it's even an insult," he said in court, according to Politico.</p><p>Despite initially telling the courtroom he would not represent himself, the actor spoke on his own behalf for the majority of the hearing, according to <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2021/11/29/politics/january-6-jesus-christ-superstar-sovereign-citizen/index.html">CNN.</a> </p><p>Ahead of Monday's hearing, federal prosecutors did not ask that Beeks be kept in jail, but his outbursts changed that mid-hearing, the outlet reported. Assistant US Attorney Jeffrey Nestler, acknowledging Beeks' refusal to accept the court's authority, said in court on Monday that he would, in fact, request pretrial detention for the defendant.</p><p>"A defendant who rejects the jurisdiction of the court...rejects the rule of law," Howell reportedly said, "is typically not released pre-trial."</p><p>The judge, however, did eventually decide to release Beeks with several conditions, including a GPS monitoring requirement and a curfew, after a public defender spoke privately with the actor in an attempt to convince him to accept the terms of a pretrial release, according to CNN. </p><p>Michelle Peterson, the public defender representing Beeks during Monday's hearing, did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment. </p><p>Beeks is the second accused Capitol rioter to make claims of divine authority. In July, Pennsylvania pizzeria owner <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/capitol-riot-defendant-who-threatened-nancy-pelosi-rejects-lawyer-2021-7">Pauline Bauer made a similar appeal</a>, claiming special legal privileges as a "self-governed individual." <ul class="summary-list"><li>James Beeks was arrested Tuesday on charges related to the Jan. 6 insurrection, the DOJ said.</li><li>Beeks went to the Capitol with Oath Keepers and was part of a group that "attacked law enforcement," it said.</li></ul><ul class="summary-list"></ul><p>An actor who played Judas on "<keyword id="12599600" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="jesus-christ-superstar" source="Orion">Jesus Christ Superstar</keyword>" stormed the US Capitol with a group of Oath Keepers on January 6, prosecutors said Tuesday.</p><p>James Beeks, 49, was arrested in Milwaukee on Tuesday on charges related to the insurrection, <a href="https://www.justice.gov/usao-dc/pr/florida-man-arrested-charges-related-jan-6-capitol-breach">the US attorney's office for the District of Columbia said</a>.</p><p>Beeks, who is from Orlando, Florida, "joined with a group of Oath Keepers while walking from the Ellipse to the Capitol" and subsequently joined "a mob of people, including some who attacked law enforcement," the statement said.</p><p>A number of other Oath Keepers, <a href="https://www.adl.org/Backgrounders/OathKeepers">a right-wing fringe organization,</a> have been <a href="https://www.insider.com/capitol-riot-oath-keeper-jon-schaffer-cooperate-flip-prosecutors-2021-4">charged in relation to the January 6 riot.</a> </p><div type="image" title="Image of James Beeks" height="1000" width="2000" msid="87890300" hostid="261"></div><p>Law enforcement officials trying to identify Beeks from footage taken on the Capitol complex struggled to find images of his face, but were able to identify him by a partial shot of his ear, the <a href="https://www.justice.gov/usao-dc/press-release/file/1451311/download">FBI said in a November 18 statement of facts</a>.</p><p>"A photograph of Beeks's [sic] right ear while at the Capitol appears similar to Beeks's [sic] right ear as seen on a video of Beeks on Beeks's [sic] YouTube page," the document said.</p><p>Beeks is a current cast member on the US tour of "Jesus Christ Superstar," acting under the stage name <a href="https://ustour.jesuschristsuperstar.com/people/james-t-justis/">James T. Justis</a>, the document said.</p><p>Beeks was playing the role of Judas, one of Jesus' disciples who ultimately betrayed him.</p><p>Earlier this month a number of US law enforcement officers traveled to San Francisco and Los Angeles to watch Beeks on stage, the document said.</p><div type="image" title="Images of James Beeks." height="1088" width="2176" msid="87890304" hostid="261"></div><p>The Really Useful Group, the tour organizers, did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.</p><p>The DOJ statement issued Tuesday noted that, while most of the people storming the Capitol on January 6 wore camouflage or combat gear, Beeks wore "a Michael Jackson 'BAD' world tour jacket," a black helmet, and "a homemade black shield."</p><p>Beeks has described himself<em> </em>as "Top Michael Jackson Tribute artist" on <a href="https://www.youtube.com/user/jdmoonwalker/about">his YouTube page</a>.</p><p>As of Monday, at least <a href="https://www.insider.com/all-the-us-capitol-pro-trump-riot-arrests-charges-names-2021-1">702 other people had been charged in connection with the January 6 riot</a>. Princess Margaret still remains on of the most stylish royals in history, and the image captures the new decade, as she's wearing a winged eyeliner, a make-up trend that became popular in the 60s, which is very different from how Vanessa Kirby was styled in the first two seasons as the same character.</p><p>Bonham Carter is a two-time Oscar nominee. One of her nominations was for best supporting actress in "The King's Speech," in which she played the Queen Mother, Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Margaret's mother.&#xa0;</p><p>Shortly after posting the image of Bonham Carter, the Twitter account shared its first image of Ben Daniels as Antony Armstrong-Jones, a photographer Princess Margaret's husband, played by Matthew Goode in season two.&#xa0;</p><p>Daniels has starred in "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story," "House of Cards," and recently played Pontius Pilate in NBC's live musical, "Jesus Christ Superstar."</p><p><span>The third season will star a handful of other veteran British actors. Playing Prince Philip is Tobias Menzies from "Game of Thrones" and more recently, AMC's "The Terror." Netflix released the first image of Helena Bonham Carter looking fabulous as Princess Margaret in season 3 of 'The Crown'

It was neither the first or last time a movie star will meet that fate, but it's the infamous, hate-filled rant he went on while being placed into a police car that caused his media implosion.</p><p>"F---ing Jews ... the Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world," the drunk Gibson slurred that evening in the leaked recording.</p><p>Gibson took his hits for the comments, made his public apologies, and met with Jewish leaders to ask for forgiveness.</p><p>All wasn't forgiven, but he was on the right track.</p><p>In 2010, however, the mega-talent agency William Morris Endeavor <a href="http://www.nydailynews.com/entertainment/gossip/mel-gibson-agency-drops-actor-racist-sexist-rant-alleged-attack-ex-girlfriend-article-1.464160" target="_blank">dropped Gibson</a> after tapes surfaced of him going into a racist rant and making a death threat against his ex-girlfriend.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/55dac4b8bd86ef1b008b5484-1764/rtr2qlb0.jpg" alt="mel gibson" data-mce-source="REUTERS/Kevork Djansezian" data-mce-caption="Actor Mel Gibson attends a hearing in Los Angeles Superior Court to finalize financial issues in a custody battle with former girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva In Los Angeles on August 31, 2011." /><p class="source"><span>REUTERS/Kevork Djansezian</span></p><p class="caption">Actor Mel Gibson attends a hearing in Los Angeles Superior Court to finalize financial issues in a custody battle with former girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva on August 31, 2011.</p></div><p></p></div></div>For many in Hollywood, it was the last straw. They turned their backs on him. Since 2006, he's only starred in one studio-backed movie ("Edge of Darkness").</p><p>"I think he's essentially been blacklisted in the industry," "Lethal Weapon" screenwriter turned director Shane Black ("The Nice Guys") told <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/shane-black-interview-the-nice-guys-2016-5">Business Insider</a> back in May. "I think people don't want to work with him."</p><p>There have been exceptions. Close friend Jodie Foster cast Gibson in her 2011 directing effort, "The Beaver," and Robert Downey Jr., who found support in Gibson when he had his own substance-abuse problems in the late 1990s, tried to convince Marvel Studios to hire Gibson to <a href="http://uproxx.com/movies/shane-black-the-nice-guys-iron-man-3/" target="_blank">direct "Iron Man 3."</a></p><p>But mostly Gibson has been an outcast in Hollywood, and that was most evident in his directing efforts, which had dried up following 2006's "Apocalypto."</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/581b75ba362ca425008b6c26-2400/mel-gibson.jpg" alt="mel gibson" data-mce-source="Getty" data-mce-caption="Mel Gibson at the Cannes Film Festival in 2016." /><p class="source"><span>Getty</span></p><p class="caption">Mel Gibson at the Cannes Film Festival in 2016.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>--</p><p>As much as we love to see our stars knocked down a peg (whether we acknowledge it or not), we're even more excited when they stage a comeback. And that's where we are in Gibson's career trajectory right now.</p><p>On Friday, the Gibson-directed World War II drama "Hacksaw Ridge" opens in theaters. Along with being his first directing effort since 2006, it's also fueling the best press Gibson has gotten in a decade.</p><p>Gibson will receive a directing honor at the Hollywood Film Awards later this week, and at a recent screening for "Hacksaw Ridge" in Beverly Hills, he received a <a href="http://www.thewrap.com/pariah-no-more-mel-gibson-gets-standing-ovation-at-hacksaw-ridge-screening-in-beverly-hills-video/" target="_blank">standing ovation</a>. (The movie currently has a <a href="https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/hacksaw_ridge" target="_blank">89% ranking</a> on Rotten Tomatoes.)</p><p>On Variety's <a href="http://variety.com/2016/film/news/mel-gibson-interview-anti-semitic-2006-arrest-podcast-1201902552" target="_blank">"Playback" podcast</a>, Gibson recently spoke about his 2006 arrest, and he was candid, though also much too defensive.</p><p>"Ten years have gone by," Gibson said. "I'm feeling good. I'm sober, all of that kind of stuff, and for me it's a dim thing in the past. But others bring it up, which kind of I find annoying, because I don't understand why after 10 years it's any kind of issue. Surely if I was really what they say I was, some kind of hater, there'd be evidence of actions somewhere. There never has been.</p><p>"I've never discriminated against anyone or done anything that sort of supports that reputation," Gibson continued. "And for one episode in the back of a police car on eight double tequilas to sort of dictate all the work, life's work, and beliefs, and everything else that I have and maintain for my life is really unfair."</p><p>Obviously Gibson has some scars. Doss, an Army medic who served during the Battle of Okinawa and refused to carry a gun. He would go on to become the first conscientious objector in American history to be awarded the Medal of Honor.</p><p>And it seems from the reaction that Gibson's work behind the camera (which earned him best director and best picture Oscar wins for "Braveheart" in 1996) is <a href="http://www.rollingstone.com/movies/reviews/peter-travers-hacksaw-ridge-movie-review-w447541" target="_blank">as moving and bloody as ever</a>.</p><p>Even Lionsgate seems to be getting more comfortable touting Gibson. The first poster for "Ridge" didn't even <a href="http://www.darkhorizons.com/first-poster-mel-gibsons-hacksaw-ridge/" target="_blank">have his name on it</a>, reading instead "from the acclaimed director of 'Braveheart' and 'The Passion of the Christ.'" But TV spots this week call "Ridge" "a film by Mel Gibson."</p><p>This is all leading to the best possible moment for Gibson to be thrust back into the global spotlight. He's <a href="http://www.indiewire.com/2016/08/the-passion-of-the-christ-mel-gibson-the-resurrection-1201721899/" target="_blank">working on a sequel</a> to his mega-hit "The Passion of the Christ." Titled "The Resurrection," it will be "a huge undertaking" according to Gibson (a script is currently being developed).</p><p>"Passion of the Christ" had its own controversies surrounding it, of course, but no one could deny its devoted fans and box-office might. How Mel Gibson achieved the ultimate Hollywood comeback in 2016

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/58b48b83549057a74c8b518b-2000/undefined" alt="mel gibson oscars" data-mce-source="Getty" data-mce-caption="Mel Gibson with wife Rosalind Ross at the 2017 Oscars." /><p class="source"><span>Getty</span></p><p class="caption">Mel Gibson with wife Rosalind Ross at the 2017 Oscars.</p></div><p></p></div></div>There may not be a literal "movie jail" in Hollywood, but it's still real - just ask Mel Gibson.</p><p>Gibson graced the Oscars once again on Sunday night and looked in good spirits, as he should have: His movie "Hacksaw Ridge" was a best picture nominee, he was nominated for best director, and it took home two awards (for editing and sound mixing).</p><p>But 10 years ago, the once-superstar actor and Oscar-winning director hit his public rock bottom when he was arrested on a DUI charge on the Pacific Coast Highway in California. It was neither the first nor the last time a movie star will meet that fate, but it's the infamous, hate-filled rant he went on while being placed into a police car that caused his media implosion.</p><p>"F---ing Jews ... the Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world," the drunk Gibson slurred that evening in the leaked recording.</p><p>Gibson took his hits for the comments, made his public apologies, and met with Jewish leaders to ask for forgiveness.</p><p>All wasn't forgiven, but he was on the right track.</p><p>In 2010, however, the mega-talent agency William Morris Endeavor <a href="http://www.nydailynews.com/entertainment/gossip/mel-gibson-agency-drops-actor-racist-sexist-rant-alleged-attack-ex-girlfriend-article-1.464160" target="_blank">dropped Gibson</a> after tapes surfaced of him going into a racist rant and making a death threat against his ex-girlfriend.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/55dac4b8bd86ef1b008b5484-1764/rtr2qlb0.jpg" alt="mel gibson" data-mce-source="REUTERS/Kevork Djansezian" data-mce-caption="Actor Mel Gibson attends a hearing in Los Angeles Superior Court to finalize financial issues in a custody battle with former girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva In Los Angeles on August 31, 2011." /><p class="source"><span>REUTERS/Kevork Djansezian</span></p><p class="caption">Actor Mel Gibson attends a hearing in Los Angeles Superior Court to finalize financial issues in a custody battle with former girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva on August 31, 2011.</p></div><p></p></div></div>For many in Hollywood, it was the last straw. They turned their backs on him. Since 2006, he's only starred in one studio-backed movie ("Edge of Darkness").</p><p>"I think he's essentially been blacklisted in the industry," "Lethal Weapon" screenwriter turned director Shane Black ("The Nice Guys") told <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/shane-black-interview-the-nice-guys-2016-5">Business Insider</a> back in May of 2016. "I think people don't want to work with him."</p><p>There have been exceptions. Close friend Jodie Foster cast Gibson in her 2011 directing effort, "The Beaver," and Robert Downey Jr., who found support in Gibson when he had his own substance-abuse problems in the late 1990s, tried to convince Marvel Studios to hire Gibson to <a href="http://uproxx.com/movies/shane-black-the-nice-guys-iron-man-3/" target="_blank">direct "Iron Man 3."</a></p><p>But mostly Gibson has been an outcast in Hollywood, and that was most evident in his directing efforts, which had dried up following 2006's "Apocalypto."</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/581b75ba362ca425008b6c26-2400/mel-gibson.jpg" alt="mel gibson" data-mce-source="Getty" data-mce-caption="Mel Gibson at the Cannes Film Festival in 2016." /><p class="source"><span>Getty</span></p><p class="caption">Mel Gibson at the Cannes Film Festival in 2016.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>--</p><p>That was, until "Hacksaw Ridge."</p><p>As much as we love to see our stars knocked down a peg (whether we acknowledge it or not), we're even more excited when they stage a comeback. And that's where we are in Gibson's career trajectory right now.</p><p>The World War II drama "Hacksaw Ridge," Gibson's first directing effort since 2006, has fueled the best press Gibson has gotten in a decade.</p><p>Along with earning over <a href="http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=hacksawridge.htm" target="_blank">$175 million worldwide</a>, the movie and Gibson himself received a warm welcome from the Academy, a sign that Hollywood's elite inner circle has welcomed the 61-year-old legend back into the club.</p><p>Taking some good-natured ribbing by host Jimmy Kimmel on Sunday night was sort of the climax to moments this past year when Gibson put on a brave face to take hits from his critics. While promoting "Hacksaw Ridge" on Variety's <a href="http://variety.com/2016/film/news/mel-gibson-interview-anti-semitic-2006-arrest-podcast-1201902552" target="_blank">"Playback" podcast</a>, Gibson spoke about his 2006 arrest, and he was candid, though also much too defensive.</p><p>"Ten years have gone by," Gibson said. "I'm feeling good. I'm sober, all of that kind of stuff, and for me it's a dim thing in the past. But others bring it up, which kind of I find annoying, because I don't understand why after 10 years it's any kind of issue. Surely if I was really what they say I was, some kind of hater, there'd be evidence of actions somewhere. There never has been.</p><p>"I've never discriminated against anyone or done anything that sort of supports that reputation," Gibson continued. "And for one episode in the back of a police car on eight double tequilas to sort of dictate all the work, life's work, and beliefs, and everything else that I have and maintain for my life is really unfair."</p><p>Obviously Gibson has some scars. Doss (and received a best actor Oscar nomination for his work), an Army medic who served during the Battle of Okinawa and refused to carry a gun. He went on to become the first conscientious objector in American history to be awarded the Medal of Honor.</p><p>Gibson's work behind the camera (which earned him best director and best picture Oscar wins for "Braveheart" in 1996) is <a href="http://www.rollingstone.com/movies/reviews/peter-travers-hacksaw-ridge-movie-review-w447541" target="_blank">as moving and bloody as ever</a>.</p><p>The film's distributor, Lionsgate, eventually got more comfortable touting Gibson. The first poster for "Ridge" didn't even <a href="http://www.darkhorizons.com/first-poster-mel-gibsons-hacksaw-ridge/" target="_blank">have his name on it</a>, reading instead "from the acclaimed director of 'Braveheart' and 'The Passion of the Christ.'" But TV spots before the release called "Ridge" "a film by Mel Gibson."</p><p>This has all led to Gibson being thrust back into the global spotlight (whether he likes it or not). He was <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/mel-gibson-directing-suicide-squad-sequel-2017-2">reportedly in talks with Warner Bros.</a> about directing the "Suicide Squad" sequel. He's also <a href="http://www.indiewire.com/2016/08/the-passion-of-the-christ-mel-gibson-the-resurrection-1201721899/" target="_blank">working on a sequel</a> to his mega-hit "The Passion of the Christ." Titled "The Resurrection," it will be "a huge undertaking," according to Gibson (a script is currently being developed).</p><p>"Passion of the Christ" had its own controversies surrounding it, of course, but no one could deny its devoted fans and box-office might.
