<ul class="summary-list"><li>A video appears to show the college professor who pretended to be Black slamming the NYPD for targetting "our" people at protests.</li><li><keyword id="9878701" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="jessica-krug">Jessica Krug</keyword>, of <keyword id="162467" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="George-Washington-University">George Washington University</keyword>, <a href="https://www.insider.com/jessica-krug-professor-lied-about-black-race-white-post-gw-9">revealed Thursday</a> that she was white, Jewish, and from Kansas, despite a career spent claiming to be a Bronx native with Black heritage.</li><li>On June 9, Krug — appearing as "Jess La Bombalera" — told a New York City Council hearing on police brutality at <keyword id="2771111" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="black-lives-matter">Black Lives Matter</keyword> protests that "if this city is for us the NYPD can't stay."</li><li>Krug also referred to victims of police violence as "my Black and brown siblings."</li><li>In the blog post outing herself, Krug called herself "a <keyword id="24504" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="culture">culture</keyword> leech," and that "I absolutely cancel myself."</li></ul><p>A George Washington University professor <a href="https://www.insider.com/jessica-krug-professor-lied-about-black-race-white-post-gw-9">who on Thursday admitted to pretending to be Black</a> had previously admonished the New York Police Department for targeting "our" people at Black Lives Matter protests.</p><p>In <a href="https://medium.com/@jessakrug/the-truth-and-the-anti-black-violence-of-my-lies-9a9621401f85">a Medium blog post</a>, Jessica Krug revealed that she had spent her career claiming to be of North African and Caribbean descent from the Bronx in New York City, even though she is in fact a white woman from the Kansas City area.</p><p>"I am a culture leech," she said.</p><p>But appearing via video link on June 9, 2020, at a New York City Council hearing about police brutality, a woman calling herself Jess La Bombalera attacked the NYPD and the council in three-minute tirade, expressing support for her "Black and brown siblings."</p><p>A <a href="https://news.sky.com/story/jessica-krug-george-washington-university-professor-admits-she-has-been-pretending-to-be-black-12063202">number of activists on Twitter</a> have said that Jess La Bombalera is Krug's activist name. Krug also uses the moniker on her PayPal account, <a href="https://twitter.com/WillBredderman/status/1301576610131456004">according to Daily Beast reporter Will Bredderman.</a></p><p>In the video, Krug attacked the council for supporting the NYPD, despite what she said was widespread evidence of racially-motivated violence at protests demanding justice for George Floyd.</p><iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/n40wEIFtImU" frameborder="0"></iframe><p>Krug referred to a Black person killed by police in Harlem as "one of our own." </p><p>"You gotta defund the NYPD, abolish it, the police are a colonial occupation force," she said. "If this city is for us the NYPD can't stay."</p><p>She then slammed white protesters who were also giving testimony via video link for not giving up their platform to Black protesters.</p><div type="image" title="george washington university professor race" height="470" width="941" msid="77929746" hostid="261"></div><p>"I also wanna call out all these white New Yorkers who waited for hours with us to be able to speak, and then did not yield their time to Black and brown indigenous New Yorkers," she said.</p><p>At the time <a href="https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2020/06/22/testifying-against-police-brutality-on-zoom">the New Yorker reported</a> that after Krug made the complaint, "a few of the white participants gave up their place in line."</p><p>In the blog post where she admitted to assuming Black heritage, Krug said: "To an escalating degree over my adult life I have eschewed my lived experience as a white Jewish child in suburban Kansas City under various assumed identities within a Blackness that I had no right to claim: first North African Blackness, then US rooted Blackness, then Caribbean rooted Bronx Blackness."</p><div type="image" title="new york george floyd protests police officers" height="1249" width="2500" msid="77929748" hostid="261"></div><p>"I should absolutely be cancelled. No. I don't write in passive voice, ever, because I believe we must name power. So. You should absolutely cancel me, and I absolutely cancel myself," Krug wrote.</p><p>According <a href="https://history.columbian.gwu.edu/jessica-krug">to George Washington University</a>, Krug is an associate professor who teaches "politics, ideas, and cultural practices in Africa and the African Diaspora, with a particular interest in West Central Africa and maroon societies in the early modern period and Black transnational cultural studies."</p><p>A spokesperson for GWU <a href="https://www.insider.com/jessica-krug-professor-lied-about-black-race-white-post-gw-9">told Insider's Rachel Greenspan</a> that it is "looking into the situation."</p><p>The university also told Insider that it could not confirm that the blog post was written by Krug. Video shows the college professor who pretended to be Black attacking the NYPD, accusing it of brutalizing 'our' people at BLM protests

Krug wrote that though she had at times claimed to be of North African descent, Caribbean descent, and from the Bronx, she is a white woman from the Kansas City area. </li><li>"I am not a <keyword id="24504" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="culture">culture</keyword> vulture. I am a culture leech," Krug wrote, adding that she believed she should be "canceled." The post sparked immediate backlash online, particularly among academics, given Krug's expertise in African studies and issues of representation and colonialism. </li><li>In a statement provided to Insider, a GW spokesperson said that the university was "looking into the situation." </li></ul><p>A George Washington University professor has come under fire after a post in her name admitted that she had lied about being Black for the entirety of her career.</p><p>The <a href="https://medium.com/@jessakrug/the-truth-and-the-anti-black-violence-of-my-lies-9a9621401f85" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">article</a>, which was published on Medium and appeared to be written by the professor Jessica A. Krug, said that she had been living "under various assumed identities within a Blackness that I had no right to claim," at times having claimed to be of North African or Caribbean descent, and from the Bronx.</p><p>In reality, Krug is white, Jewish, and grew up in the suburbs of Kansas City, according to the post, "The Truth, and the Anti-Black Violence of My Lies." </p><p>"I am not a culture vulture. I am a culture leech," Krug wrote, adding that she believed she should be "canceled." </p><p>The revelation sent shockwaves through academia, in part because of the subject she teaches. Krug is a scholar of African and African American history, and teaches courses on the trans-Atlantic slave trade and African and Caribbean diasporas, <a href="https://history.columbian.gwu.edu/jessica-krug">according to her faculty profile on the university's website</a>. Last year, Krug was a finalist for the prestigious <a href="https://glc.yale.edu/news/yale-announces-2019-frederick-douglass-book-prize-finalists">Frederick Douglass Book Prize</a> honoring nonfiction works on African American history.</p><p>Online, some pointed out that grants Krug had received were targeted toward Black scholars, raising further questions about the consequences of Krug's misrepresentation. Her admission also reminded many of the case of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rachel-dolezal-pretending-to-be-black-2015-6">Rachel Dolezal</a>, a white woman who famously purported to be Black. In 2015, Dolezal's story made national headlines after she was <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oKRj_h7vmMM">confronted by KXLY-4</a>, a local <keyword id="6355005" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="news">news</keyword> station.</p><p>Crystal Nosal, a spokesperson for George Washington, told Insider that the university was "looking into the situation" but couldn't comment further. The university also said it could not confirm that the letter was written by Krug, but some of Krug's colleagues and others in her field said publicly that they believed the post was written by her.</p><p>Krug did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment. Duke University Press, which publishes Krug's book on Angola and the trans-Atlantic slave trade, "<a href="https://www.dukeupress.edu/fugitive-modernities">Fugitive Modernities: Kisama and the Politics of Freedom</a>," did not immediately respond to a request for comment. </p><p>For years, Krug had identified as Black or Latinx in blog posts. In an article for Essence that has <a href="https://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:9vwX2-xcz-0J:/+&amp;cd=2&amp;hl=en&amp;ct=clnk&amp;gl=ust=clnk&amp;gl=us">since been deleted</a>, she called herself a "boricua" — an informal term for someone who is Puerto Rican. In the biography associated with that post, as well as in blog posts for other sites, Krug called herself an "unreformed child of the hood." </p><p>"There is no ignorance, no innocence, nothing to claim, nothing to defend. Screenwriter Hari Ziyad said in a tweet that he called Krug his friend until her admission. Ziyad said she had called him Thursday morning before the article published. He also speculated that Krug had written the post because someone had found out the truth.</p><p>"For years I defended her work, and her from her own self-loathing. George Washington University investigating professor for a post saying she lied about being Black her entire career and is actually white

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Muslim activist Raquel Saraswati was exposed for lying about being of South Asian, Arab, and Latin descent, The Intercept reported.</li><li>Other white people, like Rachel Dolezal, have similarly tried to misrepresent themselves as people of color.</li></ul><p>In February, Raquel Evita Saraswati, a Muslim activist, was <a href="https://theintercept.com/2023/02/16/american-friends-service-committee-raquel-saraswati/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">exposed for posing as a woman of color</a>, The Intercept reported. Saraswati claimed to be of Arab, South Asian, and Latin descent, and was the chief equity, inclusion, and culture officer of the American Friends Service Committee, a peace and social justice organization.</p><p>But, according to her friends and family, Saraswati was actually born Rachel Elizabeth Seidel, a woman of British, German, and Italian descent.</p><p>"I'm as white as the driven snow and so is she," her mother told the Intercept.</p><p>Saraswati landed the prominent diversity position at the AFSC because "it seemed that there was an element of lived experience and understanding of the lived experience" of a "queer, Muslim, multiethnic woman," a human resources professional involved in hiring her told the Intercept.</p><p>AFSC members <a href="https://medium.com/@kentinyoung/open-letter-on-raquel-evita-saraswati-rachel-elizabeth-seidel-e224370da860" target="_blank" rel="noopener">published an anonymous letter</a> on February 10, raising concerns about Saraswati's background and how her alleged misrepresentations hurt marginalized people. </p><p>"There have been attempts since 2015 to call for accountability in light of Saraswati's cultural vulturism," the letter read.</p><p>Saraswati <a href="https://www.thedailybeast.com/raquel-saraswati-race-faker-dubbed-raquel-dolezal-quits-social-justice-charity" target="_blank" rel="noopener">resigned from the AFSC on Tuesday</a>, the Daily Beast reported. She did not respond to a request for comment from Insider.</p><p>Saraswati isn't the only person to have faked her race. In fact, she's been dubbed the "Rachel Dolezal" of the Muslim community after <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/the-naacp-leader-who-was-recently-outed-as-white-says-she-identifies-as-black-2015-6">the woman who falsely claimed Black and Native American ancestry for years</a>. Dolezal was the chapter president of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, and later resigned amid the controversy in 2015.</p><div type="image" title="Rachel Dolezal" height="967" width="1291" msid="98415681" hostid="261" sizebytes="55702"></div><h2><strong>A history of race faking</strong></h2><p>There's no shortage of other examples of people who have misrepresented their race or ethnicity: Hilaria Baldwin, Alec Baldwin's wife, <a href="https://www.insider.com/hilaria-baldwin-spanish-controversy-public-life-timeline-2020-12">attracted controversy over allegations that she misled people into believing she was Spanish</a> in 2020. That same year, actress and filmmaker Michelle Latimer was found to have <a href="https://variety.com/2020/film/global/michelle-latimer-indigenous-trickster-inconvenient-indian-1234873888/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">falsely claimed Indigenous ancestry</a>. And, in 2021, British influencer <a href="https://www.insider.com/rachel-dolezal-defends-oli-london-2021-7">Oli London claimed they had "transitioned" races from white to Korean</a>.</p><p>In September 2020, Jessica Krug, a historian and former tenured professor at George Washington University, was embroiled in a similar scandal after <a href="https://www.insider.com/jessica-krug-professor-lied-about-black-race-white-post-gw-9">she lied about being Black her entire career</a>. Krug had written articles in Essence and the race-exploring website RaceBaitR, as well as a book on African American history and Latin America. She also received fellowships and financial support for her research on Black culture.</p><p>In a <a href="https://medium.com/@jessakrug/the-truth-and-the-anti-black-violence-of-my-lies-9a9621401f85" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Medium post</a> published under her name, Krug was revealed to be white, and had been living "under various assumed identities within a Blackness that I had no right to claim," at times having claimed to be of North African or Caribbean descent, and from the Bronx.</p><p>"I am not a culture vulture. I am a culture leech," Krug wrote.</p><h2><strong>A reversal of 'white passing'</strong></h2><p>People of color have historically had to pass as white in order to survive or get ahead. Famed actress Merle Oberon hid her South Asian and Maori heritage to avoid prejudice, while sex symbol Raquel Welch grew up with a father who tried to assimilate at all costs, even banning Spanish at home.</p><p>"It was told to me that if I wanted to be typecast, I would play into that," Welch <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2002/06/11/movies/raquel-welch-reinvented-latina-familiar-actress-now-boasts-her-heritage.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told</a> the New York Times in 2002. "You just couldn't be too different. My first big breakthrough part in 'One Million Years B.C.' they dyed my hair blond."</p><p>For people of color, passing was about survival, affording them privileges, resources, and opportunities that are typically available only to those who were white, according to Whitney Pirtle, associate professor of sociology at University of California Merced.</p><div type="image" title="Dr. Albert Johnston and his family" height="824" width="1100" msid="98415683" hostid="261" sizebytes="67528"></div><p>A white person passing as another race is fundamentally different because it misunderstands the way race and racism work in the United States, experts told Insider.</p><p>"People like Rachel Dolezal and Raquel Saraswati didn't experience the structural barriers that women of color experienced. Yet when they 'become' women of color, they're able to get certain jobs and become leaders of movements because they had a different path," Pirtle said.</p><p>There are potential reasons why someone who is white would want to pose as a person of color, from family trauma to a desire to evade "responsibility for white oppression of other racial groups," according to Maryann Erigha, associate professor of sociology at the University of Georgia.</p><p><a href="https://www.insider.com/celebrities-blackfishing-accusations-racially-ambiguous]">Playing up racial ambiguity</a> — as some celebrities like <a href="https://www.insider.com/ariana-grande-accused-of-copying-outfits-cultural-appropriation-sweetener-tour-2019-9">Ariana Grande</a>, Iggy Azalea, and Kim Kardashian have been criticized for — can also be a means of commercializing "Otherness," Jonathan Rosa, associate professor of race and ethnicity at Stanford, told Insider.</p><div type="image" title="Iggy Azalea in the 'I Am The Stripclub' music video." height="883" width="1178" msid="98415685" hostid="261" sizebytes="40080"></div><h2><strong>The dangers of 'costuming' racial identities</strong></h2><p>Racial misrepresentation not only takes up a space meant for actual people of color — just as Saraswati had when she took the diversity role in AFSC — but also undermines real efforts to provide representation and resources to communities, Erigha said.</p><p>"Costuming" also facilitates a misunderstanding of the concept of race as a social construct, which denotes how racial categories have shifted depending on the historical, political, social, and economic contexts of a particular time. Pretending to be a person of color wholly ignores the historical trauma and discrimination that marginalized communities have experienced in what Pirtle called an "amplification of white privilege."</p><p>"A costume is not something you are; it's something you put on and can then take off," Pirtle said. "It's harmful for those people who don't have that identity as a costume. Are you making a caricature of me, of my people? Are you gaining the resource that you need at this time, but not dealing with the ramifications of what it means to truly live in our shoes?"</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>A well known racial justice activist in <keyword id="26517" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Indiana">Indiana</keyword> admitted to pretending to be a <keyword id="6368377" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="black">Black</keyword> person. </li><li><a href="https://www.blackindylive.com/shocking-details-emerge-on-indy-activist-who-faked-life-as-a-black-woman/">Black Indy Live</a> first reported that "Satchuel Cole" who formerly went by the name of Jennifer Benton was born to parents who were white based on legal documents.</li><li>"My deception and lies have hurt those I care most about. I have taken up space as a Black person while knowing I am white. I have used Blackness when it was not mine to use," the activist posted <a href="https://www.facebook.com/azalea.monroe.180">on social media. </a></li></ul><p>A prominent racial justice activist in Indianapolis, Indiana pretended to be a Black person when legal documents show they are actually white. </p><p>Satchuel Cole, who has pretended to be Black, worked with organizations such as Indy10 Black Lives Matter and Indy SURJ as a "community leader" in Indiana, <a href="https://www.indystar.com/story/news/investigations/2020/09/18/indianapolis-activist-satchuel-cole-lied-being-black/3486542001/">IndyStar reported.</a>  </p><p>However, <a href="https://www.blackindylive.com/shocking-details-emerge-on-indy-activist-who-faked-life-as-a-black-woman/">BlackIndyLive.com</a> first reported that Cole has been misrepresenting her racial identity and is actually white. Cole was born to parents Rachel Irick and John Oliver Benton who both indicated their <keyword id="15024" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="Race">race</keyword> as white according to legal documents obtained by BlackIndyLive.com. IndyStar reported that Cole legally changed their name from Jennifer Lynn Benton to Satchuel Paigelyn Cole ten years ago. Since then, Cole self-identified as a Black person, according to BlackIndyLive.com. </p><p>A day after the expose was published, Cole responded through a public Facebook post, saying her "deception and lies have hurt those I care most about."</p><p>"I have taken up space as a Black person while knowing I am white. I have used Blackness when it was not mine to use. Jessica Brown, wine director at The Breslin Bar &amp; Dining Room and The John Dory Oyster Bar in New York, took a look at each airline's wine lists and <span>ranked the top five airlines based on diversity, breadth, and quality of the wines. She also shared the best bottles to get on each.</span></p><p>Keep in mind that wine lists vary by class as well as route, and some airlines, like Qantas, switch up their wine lists so often they don't even keep a list.</p><p>Here are the top top 5 airlines for wine, according to Brown, and the best wines to order on each:</p><h3><strong>1. Emirates</strong></h3><ul><li>Dom Perignon 2004</li><li>Domaine du Vieux Telegraphe 2011</li><li>Y de Yquem 2012</li></ul><p>"I have no idea how much a first class ticket on Emirates costs, but you could probably make that flight worth it by drinking a bunch of stuff off that list, and it would be less expensive than going into a restaurant and buying those bottles," Brown says.</p><p>"This was the wine list with the most wines that you would see on lists that are really respected, those I would see on wine programs in New York City, or that I would have on my list. I would have thought that airline wine lists would really have to defer to brands that are much more mass produced; I would imagine just for the quantity that they have to deal with that would be an issue, and that's what I most commonly see on airline wine lists - just pretty commercial mass produced and mass marketed brands. So this has the most wines on it that were smaller production, or more unique and classic."</p><h3><strong style="line-height: 1.5em; color: #000000;">2. Qatar Airways</strong></h3><ul><li>Krug Brut Grand Cuvee Champagne</li><li>Lanson Brut 1999 Champagne </li></ul><p>"It has some wines that are less well regarded and more mainstream, but still old world in style, and from classic wine regions that are well respected. Neither of these had a lot of new world wine on them, meaning wine coming from Australia, South America, Latin America, South Africa, even California."</p><h3><strong>3. Thai Airways</strong></h3><ul><li>Pascal Jolivet Pouilly Fume 2013</li></ul><p>"Again this list is focused on classic and well-known regions. I picked it for the breadth of their selection, as well as the quality and how respected the brands are."</p><h3><strong>4. Korean Air</strong></h3><ul><li>PJ Belle Epoque Blanc de Blanc 2002</li></ul><p>"Korean, over wines on Virgin or Air New Zealand, focused on old world regions, classic regions and classic styles of wine, as opposed to new world styles and more mass produced brands. There are some mass produced brands on this list, but it has classic regions like Chablis, and Belle Epoque champagne."</p><h3><strong style="line-height: 1.5em; color: #000000;">5. Singapore Airlines</strong></h3><ul><li>Dom Perignon  </li><li>Krug </li></ul><p>"This was one of the few lists that really kind of had a focus on Burgundy, which is I think is most popular right now for red wine.
