Former Twitter CEO <keyword id="265395" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="jack-dorsey" source="Orion">Jack Dorsey</keyword>'s firm Block is working on hardware crypto wallet, a device to help people "safely own and manage their Bitcoin".<br /><br />Block's hardware lead, <keyword id="13566285" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="jesse-dorogusker" source="Orion">Jesse Dorogusker</keyword>, tweeted an image showing several devices, all seemingly including fingerprint readers and USB-C charging ports -- both things Block said its hardware wallet would include in a blog post last month, reports The <keyword id="6765301" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="verge" source="Orion">Verge</keyword>.<br /><br /><keyword id="778018" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="dorsey" source="Orion">Dorsey</keyword> announced his company's work on the crypto wallet in June 2021.<br /><br />The company said the hardware wallet would be just one component in its crypto storage system and that it would have a corresponding mobile app for your phone.<br /><br />Block also provided a breakdown of the potential recovery processes available should you lose your wallet or your phone. Ex-Twitter CEO reveals hardware crypto wallet for Bitcoin users

Square and Twitter CEO <a href="https://twitter.com/jack/status/1400839191320313860">Jack Dorsey</a> said in response.</p><p>In June, <a href="https://twitter.com/jack/status/1400839191320313860">Dorsey announced in a lengthy Twitter thread</a> that his fintech company was "considering" making an open-source hardware wallet, outlining how the company was thinking about developing the product and asking for input from the cryptocurrency developer community.</p><p>Dorogusker said Thursday those responses had "resonated" and convinced the company to initially build<strong> </strong>a globally distributed, mobile-friendly, multi-signature wallet, confirming the security- and inclusivity-focused product Dorsey described in June.</p><p>Square is forming a "small, cross-functional team," led by Max Guise, to oversee product development, and plans to hire for roles in "hardware, software, security, and business," Dorogusker said.</p><p>Bitcoin has long been a passion project for Dorsey, who recently said at the Bitcoin 2021 conference in June he would leave <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/jack-dorsey-twitter-square-leave-crypto-mining-bitcoin-2021-conference-2021-6">Square and Twitter to work on bitcoin</a> projects if they "needed more help" than the two companies he currently runs.</p>

It was last trading around $62,179 on Monday.</p><p>To mine the <keyword id="11892695" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="cryptocurrency" source="Orion">cryptocurrency</keyword>, miners use specially-designed computer equipment to verify transactions in the process that creates newly-minted bitcoins.</p><p>In his Twitter thread, Dorsey identified five issues in bitcoin mining. One was that mining is not accessible to everyone.</p><p>"Bitcoin mining should be as easy as plugging a rig into a power source. There isn't enough incentive today for individuals to overcome the complexity of running a miner for themselves," he said.</p><p>Dorsey has previously <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/jack-dorsey-twitter-square-leave-crypto-mining-bitcoin-2021-conference-2021-6">touted bitcoin</a> as one of the most important projects he wants to work on, saying he would leave the helm of Square and <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/twtr-stock">Twitter</a> if the cryptocurrency needed more help. Square holds about 8,000 bitcoins worth $496 million as of Monday, according to <a href="https://bitcointreasuries.net/">Bitcoin Treasuries</a>.</p><p>Bitcoin mining needs to be more distributed and energy-efficient, according to Dorsey.</p><p>"The core job of a miner is to securely settle transactions without the need for trusted 3rd parties," he said. "This is critical well after the last bitcoin is mined. The more decentralized this is, the more resilient the bitcoin network becomes."</p><p>The environmental impact of bitcoin's <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-mine-bitcoin-miner-electricity-equipment-costs-profitability-pool-2021-7">electricity usage</a> is a hotly debated topic. Dorsey said innovation in silicon, software, and integration will help resolve the energy debate surrounding the cryptocurrency.</p><p>The Square CEO also said that silicon design is concentrated in the hands of a few companies, which has likely squeezed supply. He questioned why there were not more companies involved in the industry. Also at issue is the integration between the software, hardware and distribution aspects of mining rigs.</p><p><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-mine-bitcoin-ether-doge-crypto-earnings-costs-rigs-setup-advice?r=US&amp;IR=TIR=T">Crypto mining</a> is one way to be involved in the digital currency industry beyond purchasing coins. In June, Dorsey said Square was looking at creating a non-custodial hardware wallet for bitcoin, which would give owners sole control of private keys. Jack Dorsey says Square is looking to build bitcoin mining hardware for the masses

It was a boom time for the company, with <a href="https://www.cnet.com/news/apples-fiscal-2011-by-the-numbers/">32 million iPads sold</a> in the product's first full fiscal year on sale, not to mention some <a href="https://www.cnet.com/news/apples-fiscal-2011-by-the-numbers/">72 million iPhones</a>. </p><p>Talk of '<a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2018/11/02/the-iphone-has-peaked.html">peak iPhone</a>' was years into the future, and Apple had started the year hitting a $300 billion market cap. Apple was <em>the</em> company for any Silicon Valley engineer to work for.</p><p>But Dorogusker - who today serves as hardware lead at mobile payments fintech Square - had other ideas. Or, to put things more accurately, those ideas found him.</p><h2>Dorogusker worked at Apple during its renaissance but was won over by Dorsey</h2><p>"I joined Apple in 2003, and it was early iPod days," he recalls in an interview with Business Insider. "The iPod team was about 35 people. It was very separate from the computer company. We were the music startup inside the company."</p><p>It would have been an exciting time. The iPod was a revolutionary device, capable of fitting millions of songs onto a beautifully designed, tiny gadget. Apple would cement its renaissance with the launch of the iPhone, four years after Dorogusker joined the company.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Justin Sullivan/Getty Images</span></p><p class="caption">The original iPod.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>"I really worked through the iPod era, into the iPhone era, into the iPad era," he says. "That was over eight years, [during] giant growth in the company; giant growth in the product line. I think we had sold two million iPods when I started, and probably finished up at over a billion. I just learned a tonne of tremendous experience, and I have tremendous respect for them. But then I met Jack Dorsey."</p><p>Dorsey is the chief executive and founder at Square. It's not his only day job - he's also the CEO of Twitter.</p><p>When Dorsey hired Dorogusker in 2011, Square would have been two years old. He would also have <a href="https://techcrunch.com/2011/03/28/jack-dorsey-takes-over-product-again-at-twitter-as-executive-chairman/">just started as Twitter's executive chairman</a>, after <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2019/2/22/18236780/twitter-co-founder-evan-williams-stepping-down-board-medium-ceo">Dick Costolo has replaced Evan Williams as CEO in 2010</a>. </p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>AP Photo/Jose Luis Magana</span></p><p class="caption">Jack Dorsey is CEO of both Square and Twitter.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>"I didn't know Dorsey before I met one of his executives, [after] just a casual intro from a friend," Dorogusker says. "After talking to him for about 15 minutes, which I thought was just a meet and greet, it started to feel like an interview. I thought 'What's what's going on here?' And Jack told this tremendously compelling story about financial inclusion; economic empowerment; building tools for small business owners - and how hardware could contribute to that.</p><p>"He had a very small hardware team at the time, and he had one piece of hardware: a little magnetic strip card reader that plugged into the audio jack over the phone. He aspired to do more, and better, and that story was tremendous."</p><p>Dorogusker was promptly <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/jessedorogusker/">hired to lead Square's hardware team</a> - a role he still occupies today.</p><p>The result is Square's line-up of payment products, which allow small businesses to accept card and contactless payments, as well as carry out a host of back-end tasks. You can see Dorogusker's influences on those hardware products - all clean lines, and sleek white gloss. </p><p>Asked about the departure of Apple's influential design chief Jony Ive, Dorogusker simply says: "Jony and his team were tremendous. I've never seen anything better. It was totally inspirational: a lifetime of lessons in watching the way he works and the way his team works. It shows in decades and decades of the best products the planet's ever seen."</p><h2>The Terminal is an all-in-one payments and point of sale system aimed at helping small businesses run more efficiently</h2><p>Dorogusker says the move from a casual conversation with Dorsey to take over Square's hardware division was "surreal." But he describes his current boss Dorsey as a pragmatic man.</p><p>"Jack is a visionary, and very direct," he says. "Our first meeting was great. He said 'Here's what we're trying to accomplish. Here's the here's the kind of thinking I want to bring to company. We need people who can leave in that direction.' We had a good chat.</p><p>"The the idea of waking up in the morning and building tools for small businesses was compelling then; it's compelling; it'll be compiling deep into the future. [Small businesses] are a really fun audience to build for."</p><p>The Terminal - an all-in-one payments device that looks like a traditional card payment machine, but sleeker - is Square's latest attempt to do just that.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Square</span></p><p class="caption">The Square Terminal in use on a shop counter.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Dorogusker calls the Terminal Square's "first all-in-one payments and point of sale system, from the ground up." It can carry out a whole range of payment-related business operations, from managing items and taking all forms of payment, to printing receipts. It lets business owners send invoices, review their transaction history, and review month-over-month and yearly sales.</p><p>It's still familiar enough, though, that anyone used to "clunky old keypad machines" will still find it easy to use, Dorogusker says.</p><p>He adds that feedback from business owners has been positive, particularly regarding the Terminal's size and efficiency. As he puts it, small businesses typically have to deal with "a 20- or 30-page statement at the end of the month" that enumerates every fee and every charge."</p><p>"In contrast, we charge one flat rate; we have no long term contracts," he continues. "You can buy the Terminal outright, and not be leasing it from us and paying 10 times more over the lifetime of the product. That's really to lower the barrier to entry for small businesses, but it's been surprisingly attractive to larger businesses who just want clarity.</p><p>"The way we run our business at Square is real-time monitoring of everything that's going on. Small businesses typically haven't had those tools. In fact, coffee shops usually know how many cappuccinos they sold by counting dirty cups. For the first time, a small business can do it all in software."</p><p>The release of the Terminal comes at a time of impressive growth for Square. The firm's total net revenue for the second quarter of 2019 was <a href="https://squareup.com/about/investors">$1.17 billion, up by 44% year-on-year</a>. A former Apple design chief explains how Jack Dorsey convinced him to quit and join Square

On Thursday, it launched Square Terminal, a payments terminal that's small and portable, accepts all forms of payments quickly, and still does everything traditional cash registers do, like ring up sales and print out receipts.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The company is most famous for its $10 smartphone dongle, which made it easy for anyone, anywhere, to start taking credit card payments. After that, Square moved into making svelte, futuristic cash registers. This payment terminal is somewhere in the middle - portable like a smartphone, but with the features of a full register. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">"Payment terminals have been around forever," Jesse Dorogusker, head of hardware at Square, tells Business Insider. "The logical response would be to [create one] at the beginning of Square, but we had to work on getting card acceptance into as many people's hands as possible. That's the problem we solved first."</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Also, at its smaller size, users can easily carry around the terminal on the go, or discreetly place it in public view. For example, at a restaurant, a waiter can let customers pay directly at the table, instead of customers waiting for their receipt. Or, at a store, a salesperson can finish the deal with a customer directly on the spot.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In addition to supporting chip cards and swipe cards both, the Square Terminal accepts mobile payments like Apple Pay and Google Pay, can connect to Wi-Fi, and has a wired networking port built in. There's a dashboard feature for businesses to track their sales. <p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span> Bill Pugliano/Getty Images</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>It's official: Jack Dorsey is going to be <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/jack-dorsey-ceo-of-twitter-2015-8">CEO of both Square and Twitter at the same time</a>.</p><p>Although it helps that Square and Twitter are located just a few blocks away from each other, it's still a pretty enormous job.</p><p>Square will be going public soon and Twitter's stock has sunk below its IPO price as investors and analysts worry about whether it can ever become a mainstream product. </p><p>When Dorsey first took the reins at Twitter in June, it was supposed to be a temporary gig, and <span>a person close to Square <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/jack-dorsey-square-exec-team-2015-6">told Business Insider at the time that there was "absolutely not" any current employee</a> who could take over if Dorsey </span><em>did</em><span> decide to leave. </span></p><p>Even without a designated Number Two though, Dorsey does have an impressive line-up of execs who will have to step up as he tries to manage two multi-billion-dollar companies at once. </p><p>Who are they?</p><p>In June, we put together <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/jack-dorsey-square-exec-team-2015-6">this list </a>of all Square executives, and nowDorsey will be relying on them more than ever:</p><p><strong><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div></div></div>Sarah Friar, CFO</strong></p><p>Friar joined Square from Salesforce, where she was a top strategy and finance executive. Before that, she worked as an analyst at Goldman - which could be especially valuable since <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/payments-company-square-reportedly-going-public-this-year-2015-6">Square reportedly plans to go public</a> this year. </p><p><strong>Gokul Rajaram, Product lead for Caviar </strong></p><p>It was <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/square-capital-loaned-out-100-million-to-small-businesses-2015-4">a big loss for Facebook</a> when Rajaram, who was in charge of developing new ad units, ditched for Square in June 2013. At Square, he's a product engineering lead, and focuses in large part on Caviar, the San Francisco-based food delivery startup Square bought for <a href="http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2014/08/01/square-said-to-be-in-talks-to-buy-food-delivery-start-up-caviar/?_php=true&amp;_type=blogs&amp;_r=0">a reported $90 million</a> last summer. Caviar is one of the startup's <a href="http://techcrunch.com/2015/03/03/caviar-inside-square/">biggest efforts to diversify its line-up</a> of products and services.</p><p>Before Facebook, Rajaram spent five years at Google, where his last job was Product Management Director, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/blackboard/adsense">AdSense</a>. He was also a product lead for several Google acquisitions and has been described by past colleagues as "a legend" and "beloved times ten."</p><p><strong><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="https://twitter.com/jessedorogusker">Twitter</a></span></p></div><p></p></div></div>Jesse Dorogusker, Hardware lead</strong></p><p>Dorogusker has been leading hardware at Square for nearly four years, after spending the previous <em>eight</em> at Apple, most recently as director of engineering of iPod, iPhone, and iPad accessories. He's responsible for physical products like Square's signature card reader. </p><p>An early investor tells Business Insider that before Rajaram came in, he was essentially running all of product. </p><p><strong>Francoise Brougher, Business</strong></p><p>Brougher has a huge job at Square: as the business lead, she's responsible its international expansion, customer service, partnerships, and making sure that its products actually make money. </p><p>Before Square, she was a long-time Google vet, as VP of small business global sales and operations. </p><p><strong>Brian Grassadonia, Product lead, Square Cash</strong></p><p>Grassadonia joined Square as its first product manager nearly five years ago, and now focuses on the startup's consumer money transfer product, Square Cash. Since Square Cash first launched in 2013, it has processed over $1 billion annually and most recently introduced a way for businesses to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/square-cash-for-businesses-2015-3">accept payments through "$Cashtags."</a></p><p><strong><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>LinkedIn</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>Alyssa Henry, VP of seller business</strong></p><p>Henry runs the product and engineering teams for everything Square makes for businesses, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/square-capital-loaned-out-100-million-to-small-businesses-2015-4">including Square Capital</a> and Square Register. The company <a href="http://techcrunch.com/2014/04/14/square-nabs-amazon-exec-alyssa-henry-to-lead-engineering/">poached her from Amazon</a> in 2014, where she was VP of its web services business, AWS. </p><p><strong>Dana Wagner, General Counsel</strong></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Before coming to Square, Wagner was the public face of Google as it faced increased regulatory scrutiny, as its senior competition counsel. </span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">A few years ago, Fortune named him <a href="http://fortune.com/2012/08/07/5-of-techs-most-powerful-lawyers/">one of tech's five most powerful lawyers</a>, in part because of his role helping Square navigate government regulations. </span></p><p><strong>Adi Roy, People </strong></p><p>Roy heads up recruiting, human resources, and diversity initiatives at Square as its head of people, <a href="http://www.forbes.com/sites/ryanmac/2015/06/02/new-square-hire-from-google-hints-at-hiring-expansion/">as of June</a>. Before Square, he was at Google for nearly 10 years. Meet 9 star executives who will help Jack Dorsey run Square while he's busy running Twitter

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>When Dick Costolo announced that he was stepping down as CEO of Twitter, we got the surprising news that company cofounder and current Square-CEO Jack Dorsey will be stepping up to the plate. </p><p>Although Dorsey said he planned to run both companies simultaneous, one theory was that he was actually <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/twitter-ceo-search-2015-6">gunning for the Twitter CEO spot and would end up leaving Square</a>.  </p><p>But, Dorsey <a href="http://recode.net/2015/06/16/jack-dorsey-says-he-will-not-leave-his-role-as-square-ceo/">firmly rebuked that narrative to Re/code</a>, insisting that he'll be maintaining his role at the payments company. </p><p>Meaning that from July 1, when he starts, until whenever <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/twitter-wants-a-full-time-ceo-to-run-the-company-2015-6">Twitter finds another permanent candidate</a>, he'll be running both companies. </p><p>Although that task is made a little easier by the fact that Square and Twitter are located just a few blocks away from each other and Dorsey has said in the past that <a href="http://thenextweb.com/entrepreneur/2011/11/14/jack-dorsey-does-8-hours-at-twitter-8-hours-at-square-daily/">he already spends a ton of time at both</a>, it's still an enormous job to manage two multi-billion-dollar companies at once. </p><p>As he takes on new responsibilities at Twitter, Dorsey will depend on his bench of executives to pick up the slack.
