<ul class="summary-list"><li>"<keyword id="11911223" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="survivor" source="Orion">Survivor</keyword>" stopped providing swimsuits to players in 2018, and the change comes with <keyword id="11894571" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="health" source="Orion">health</keyword> risks. </li><li>UTIs and other infections from wet, dirty clothes disproportionately affect people with vaginas. </li></ul><p>For 35 seasons, "Survivor" players typically received an outfit and a bathing suit during the competition. But "Survivor: Ghost Island," which ran from February to May 2018, marked <a href="https://www.insider.com/why-survivor-players-dont-have-swimsuits-season-41-2021-10">the last time contestants were seen wearing swimsuits in the game</a>. </p><p>This decision to take swimwear out of gameplay adds needless risks to the already intense game, disproportionately affecting players with vaginas. </p><h2>Multiple former players have spoken about experiencing health issues on and shortly after the show</h2><p>Four of the five female contestants who previously <a href="https://www.insider.com/what-it-was-like-having-a-period-on-survivor-2021-6">spoke to Insider</a> said they contracted UTIs during their seasons.</p><p>Three of these women — Karishma Patel, Lauren-Ashley Beck, and Janet Carbin — competed together in 2019 on "Survivor: Island of the Idols," one of the first seasons after swimsuits were eliminated.</p><p>In an interview with Insider, Patel said she experienced a "really bad" UTI during the show that left her in "constant, 24-hour pain." </p><p>Behind the scenes, Patel said, she was able to receive antibiotics, but they caused adverse side effects like fatigue, nausea, and diarrhea. After filming wrapped, Patel said she had to be hospitalized because she "still had traces of that infection" in her body and it spread to her bladder.</p><p>Carbin said she also experienced pain from a UTI, but recalled being worried that if she needed an antibiotic she could get kicked off the show. In 41 seasons, 15 players have been <a href="https://www.goldderby.com/gallery/survivor-medevacs-all-of-the-shows-medical-evacuations/survivor-list-of-medevacs-james-clement/">medically evacuated from "Survivor</a>," some for severe infections. </p><div type="image" title="&quot;Survivor&quot; players in underwear carrying a raft" height="2000" width="3000" msid="90087775" hostid="261"></div><h2>It's no coincidence players with vaginas are contracting infections from dirty, wet bottoms</h2><p>With one pair of <keyword id="12221736" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="underwear" source="Orion">underwear</keyword> and no swimsuits, players are often pushed to choose between <a href="https://www.insider.com/survivor-players-health-risks-same-underwear-for-month-utis-2021-7">going bottomless in front of cameras</a> or wearing their wet clothing for long periods of time, which comes with health risks. </p><p>Dr. Leah Millheiser, a clinical professor and ob-gyn, said that wearing wet clothes for prolonged periods is far from ideal.</p><p>"If you're in damp clothing, whether it be from sweat or whether it be from being in the water again, you are putting yourself at risk for a yeast infection," Millheiser told Insider. </p><p>Dr. Mary Jane Minkin, a gynecologist, said that even sitting down in wet clothes for a brief amount of time can cause health risks.</p><p>"That's a wet, moist, warm environment," Minkin told Insider. "It's not great for keeping you free from bacteria and yeast."</p><p>Although anyone can be susceptible to health risks from bacteria, <a href="https://health.clevelandclinic.org/said-said-worse-urinary-tract-infections-infographic/#:~:text=Women%20have%20a%20more%20than,bacteria%20during%20sex%2C%E2%80%9D%20Dr.">people with vaginas are more likely to contract urinary tract infections</a>, which can occur when bacteria is introduced to the urethra, bladder, or kidneys. </p><p>Minkin explained that people with vaginas are at a higher risk for UTIs because the urethra is "much longer" for those with penises, so bacteria has a longer path to travel to from the outside world. </p><p>"Vaginas have plenty of bacteria on their own," Minkin said. "They're more susceptible."</p><p><a href="https://www.insider.com/what-it-was-like-having-a-period-on-survivor-2021-6">Menstrual products are also essential</a> for many players, but Millheiser warned that tampons can also introduce infections into the body if the surrounding area is exposed to common bacteria, like vaginal discharge. </p><p>"When you're wearing the same pair of underwear, you're probably being exposed to a lot more bacteria even if you have a typical amount of discharge," Millheiser told Insider.</p><p>Notably, <a href="https://www.insider.com/survivor-players-with-vaginas-got-extra-underwear-competitors-say-2022-1">two "Survivor" players from season 41</a>, which aired in 2021, said the show gave players with vaginas extra underwear after they raised their health concerns to production. </p><div type="image" title="survivor winners at war players on a raft in the ocean with one hanging a sign" height="2075" width="3000" msid="90087776" hostid="261"></div><h2>It's also unclear why 'Survivor' eliminated swimsuits from gameplay in the first place</h2><p>Players who were on 2019's "Survivor: Island of the Idols" said they were photographed in swimsuits for promotional materials and submitted swimsuits for approval but never got to wear them on the show. </p><p>Patel, who competed in that season, said players were confused over the seemingly last-minute change. </p><p>"It was miserable," said Patel. "We were talking about it amongst each other, and we think that there was a push towards making us look more like we were shipwrecked."</p><p>On an <a href="https://robhasawebsite.com/parvati-shallow-on-survivor-41-episode-4/">October 2021 episode of "Rob Has a Podcast</a>," "Survivor" winner and four-time competitor Parvati Shallow said she was surprised that production now makes contestants compete in one outfit and a single pair of underwear. </p><p>Shallow, who competed on 2019's "Survivor: Winners at War," said she "put up a huge fight." </p><p>"I was like, 'I just had a baby. I can't be out here in my underwear. I'm like a mom now, I need a bathing suit,'" she said. </p><p>Shallow said when she asked the production crew why players weren't allowed to wear swimsuits anymore, she was told that producers felt it would be "more authentic-looking" for contestants to play in their underwear. </p><p>For years, many fans on Reddit — and <a href="https://www.insider.com/survivor-players-health-risks-same-underwear-for-month-utis-2021-7">some former players</a> — have attributed the change to a private conversation between the actor and director Tyler Perry and the "Survivor" host and executive producer Jeff Probst. </p><p>But Perry, a fan of "Survivor" who once contributed a "special idol" twist to the show, <a href="https://www.insider.com/why-survivor-players-dont-have-swimsuits-not-tyler-perry-fault-2021-10">denied the accusations to Insider in 2021</a>, saying he doesn't know why production pulled swimsuits from the game.</p><p>He said he's not certain how the rumor started, but he thinks it might date back to a text-message exchange he had with Probst in which he pointed out that he saw "<a href="https://www.insider.com/survivor-winner-slams-show-for-no-swimsuits-underwear-only-2021-10">brand-new swimsuits in the middle of the season</a>" and suggested production age the replacement outfits so they don't stick out to viewers. </p><div type="image" title="&quot;Survivor&quot; player in bikini in water during a challenge next to a photo of another player in clothes in a water challenge" height="900" width="1200" msid="90087778" hostid="261"></div><h2>Fans, health experts, and former contestants hope showrunners will bring swimsuits back</h2><p>"Survivor" contestants have plenty to worry about without the added pressure of potentially developing infections that could leave them hospitalized. </p><p>"I think from a number of perspectives it makes sense to allow them to have at least two sets of clothes," Dr. Premal Patel, a urologist and a fan of "Survivor," said. "I definitely think it makes sense, I don't think it really compromises anything." </p><p>"Island of the Idols" contestant Elaine Stott suggested producers rethink bringing back swimwear or giving players an added pair of underwear regularly. </p><p>As more "Survivor" players speak up, <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/survivor/comments/pzhbgt/survivor_players_still_arent_given_swimsuits_even/">fans are also starting to take notice</a>. </p><p>"I think the viewers would prefer to see people in bathing suits, because so many viewers asked us, 'Why don't you guys wear bathing suits?'" recalled Carbin. "And I say, 'That wasn't our choice.'"</p><p>Representatives for CBS didn't immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.</p>

It's time for 'Survivor' to give players swimsuits — it's a needless risk and disadvantage for people with vaginas

<ul class="summary-list"><li>"<keyword id="44080" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="Survivor" source="Orion">Survivor</keyword>" players told Insider what it was like staying at the luxurious resort Ponderosa.</li><li>Players said they have access to unlimited food and some alcohol. </li><li>Jury members are still cut off from the outside world but said they do get to watch some TV. </li></ul><p>"<a href="https://www.insider.com/survivor-couples-still-together-2019-1">Survivor" players</a> who get voted out after the merge lose their shot at $1 million, but get to stay at a luxurious resort called Ponderosa as they wait to cast their final vote.</p><p><a href="https://www.insider.com/what-its-like-being-on-survivor-contestants-reveal-2021-6">Former "Survivor" competitors told Insider what it's actually like</a> at the resort, from day-drinking to being cut off from the outside world.</p><h2><strong>On the way to Ponderosa, players are interviewed and get a medical exam</strong></h2><div type="image" title="Karishma Patel getting her torch snuffed by Jeff Probst on &quot;Survivor&quot;" height="1687" width="2250" msid="84502665" hostid="261"></div><p>"Survivor: Island of the Idols" player Karishma Patel told Insider that after host Jeff Probst snuffs your torch, a "camera comes out of the bushes behind you and starts following you." </p><p>She said she was smiling as she left because the game was getting "too toxic" and she wanted to take a shower. </p><p>As you leave, she said, a "doctor checks you out real quick" and you "see how much weight you lost," which is shown in the Ponderosa segments <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=32A7ZTrUgTM">on the CBS "Survivor" YouTube channel</a>.</p><h2>Players choose their first Ponderosa meal before they even get to the resort</h2><p>After the check and interview, Patel said, she was brought to a nearby boat nicknamed "Jeff's boat" because of how much nicer it is than the other ones they'd ridden thus far.  </p><p>On the way to Ponderosa, she said she chose any food she wanted from a menu so it'd be ready for her when she <a href="https://www.insider.com/photos-tour-private-island-you-can-rent-with-friends-florida-2020-10">got there</a>. </p><p>Patel said she was also offered a bag of chips and an assortment of candy bars to snack on in the meantime, but she didn't eat them.</p><p>"I didn't open anything," Patel told Insider. "Genuinely, all I wanted was a hug." </p><h2>Jury members sometimes greet each other at the docks </h2><p>Patel told Insider she wasn't sure how other jury members would react to seeing her <a href="https://www.insider.com/survivor-scenes-that-got-cut-from-the-show-2021-6">after a tumultuous season</a>. But as the boat got closer, she saw several of her fellow competitors waiting.</p><p>"I saw them in the distance, I dropped my s--- and I ran," Patel said. "I must have looked like a weird little kid, running towards their parents."</p><h2>It can take time for players to adjust to post-game life</h2><div type="image" title="A close-up of Andrea Boehlke looking pensive while wearing a blue buff" height="1687" width="2250" msid="84502668" hostid="261"></div><p>Three-time "Survivor" player Andrea Boehlke told Insider that adjusting to the laid-back life at Ponderosa can be difficult. </p><p>"For the first few days of Ponderosa your head is fully in the game still," Boehlke explained. "You're thinking: 'Why was I voted out? What were the signs? What did I miss?'" </p><p>Boehlke said on top of <a href="https://www.insider.com/worst-and-grossest-things-about-playing-on-survivor-2021-6">overthinking strategy and deception</a>, you're also "so mad at yourself" and "very jealous of the people still in the game."</p><p>"Survivor: David vs. Goliath" competitor Davie Rickenbacker added that it was difficult to engage with people who acted differently on the island. </p><p>"These people are coming up to you and hugging you and [you think], 'Wait, people are really my friends! Wait, are they really my friends?'" Rickenbacker said. "It's a mind f---." </p><p>Three-time competitor Malcolm Freberg said that he heard "horror stories" about fellow jury members not getting along at Ponderosa because there was still "bad blood from the game." </p><h2>Jurors are given the option to bunk with other players</h2><div type="image" title="Davie Rickenbacker looking to his right side with the jungle in the background on survivor" height="1998" width="2664" msid="84502670" hostid="261"></div><p>Rickenbacker said you get "<a href="https://www.insider.com/things-most-people-dont-know-about-survivor-fun-facts-2021-6">the opportunity to room with people when you get back to Ponderosa</a>," which he used to help his last ally in the game, Nick Wilson, win the season.</p><p>"Nick was the only ally that I still had in the game. I was still playing the game for him," Rickenbacker told Insider. "I was going up to Goliaths you know, trying to balance for him so that they would get his vote at the end." </p><p>To help those odds, he opted to room with a castaway from the opposing team, Dan Rengering, "to sway him to get Nick's vote."</p><h2>Jury members are still cut off from the outside world but they have a few electronics and activities to keep them busy </h2><p>Rickenbacker said players still don't get their personal electronics, like laptops and cell phones, but they can watch TV. </p><p>Patel said she would "watch a lot of episodes of '<a href="https://www.insider.com/the-office-best-moments-that-were-improvised-on-series">The Office</a>'" to unwind while other jurors discussed the game. </p><p>Rickenbacker said there were also "a lot of activities for us to do vacation-wise, like massaging and paddleboarding."</p><h2>Jury members can eat as much as they want at Ponderosa</h2><div type="image" title="&quot;Survivor — Fans vs. Favorites&quot; players sitting at a bartop with drinks." height="1333" width="1778" msid="84502671" hostid="261"></div><p>Several players said they could basically eat whatever they wanted at <a href="https://www.insider.com/photos-staying-at-a-tree-house-in-bali-for-cheap-2020">the resort-like getaway</a>.</p><p>But after weeks of rationing rice and foraging on a remote island, that extreme change can take a toll on players, according to four-time competitor and one-time champion Tyson Apostol.</p><p>"It's fun for a few days, but you eat yourself sick cause you just can't stop eating," Apostol said. "So everybody's feeling really gross after a few days."</p><p>Apostol said that he also had to take medication for his digestive tract because he'd done "horrible things" to his stomach. </p><p>Boehlke, who stayed at Ponderosa on three separate seasons, said that she got sick multiple times. </p><p>"When I first got to Ponderosa, I was obviously eating all the food I could, everyone is," she explained. "So there were many times that I was on Ponderosa where I was throwing up because I just wasn't used to eating that food."</p><h2>Some players also enjoyed alcohol at the resort </h2><p>Freberg said that he and his fellow jury members "had <a href="https://www.insider.com/i-made-celebrity-chef-margarita-recipes-taste-test-review">quite a few cocktails</a> early and often," although the crew "could only get their hands on rum for us."</p><p>He recounted that he'd make "peanut-butter rum smoothies with banana and ice cream" that were the "best thing on the planet." Boehlke remembered those smoothies and added that she had "a blast" with her "Survivor: Caramoan" castmates.</p><p>"It was just this big party," Boehlke said. "... Like actually the best time of my life. We were just drinking peanut-butter rum smoothies all day." </p><h2>Several players said they eventually stopped caring about the game</h2><div type="image" title="karishma survivor" height="2078" width="2771" msid="84502674" hostid="261"></div><p>Boehlke said that after a few days at Ponderosa, you "don't care about the game."</p><p>"Every time someone else would come back to Ponderosa and they'd be talking about something that was going on in the game, you truly don't care," Boehlke told Insider. "It's like, 'That's nice, but I'm just trying to relax.'"</p><p>Patel said her interest in the competition stopped as soon as she was greeted by the other jury members. </p><p>"I did not care one bit," Patel said. "I was no longer in the game. I did not care what vote went where. I did not think about anything." </p><p>But Patel added that she was "still a little upset" at some of the players in the game and was "a little bit vocal with the other members of the jury" about that.</p><h2>But losing the game can still sting</h2><p>Despite the activities and endless supply of food, losing the game weighed heavily on some players. </p><p>"You're tired of being there and every day is just a reminder of losing," Apostol said. "... If I'm not going to win the million dollars, do I really care who else is getting it?" </p><p>Apostol said <a href="https://www.insider.com/do-survivor-players-pick-their-outfits-how-2021-6">if players were given the choice</a> to "forgo your jury vote to go home," he would choose that option "every time." </p><p>Boehlke told Insider there was a big difference between her second and third stay at Ponderosa because of how much pressure she put on herself the third time around.</p><p>"I was really upset that I didn't make it farther, I really thought I could have that game," she said. 'Survivor' players share what it's like at Ponderosa, the luxurious resort where losers wait for the finale

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Former "<keyword id="44080" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="Survivor">Survivor</keyword>" players told Insider what it's like applying for and getting on the hit series. </li><li>Several competitors sent in a video audition that showed off their personality.</li><li>Training for the show can be both physically and mentally stressful.</li></ul><p>Before players can outwit, outlast, and outplay each other for $1 million on CBS' "Survivor," they have set themselves apart during the highly competitive application process.</p><p>Insider <a href="https://www.insider.com/what-its-like-being-on-survivor-contestants-reveal-2021-6">interviewed former "Survivor" competitors about their experience</a> on the reality series to find out what it's like to audition for and actually get on the show. </p><h2>Many applicants send in video auditions, but successful ones made sure to show off their personality </h2><p>One way of applying for the <a href="https://www.insider.com/surprising-cbs-big-brother-fun-facts-2018-7">competition series</a> is by sending in a video audition. "Survivor" hopefuls should to pack their tapes with a personality to catch the eyes of casting directors, according to former players.</p><p>Three-time "Survivor" competitor Malcolm Freberg told Insider that his video just showed him "walking around the house with a Four Loko" and telling stories to the camera. </p><p>"It's all about being a storyteller," Freberg explained. "It's not about what you're saying at all. It's about how you're saying it."</p><p>Freberg also said that the casting director initially noticed his video because he coincidentally included one of her favorite songs, "Anarchy in the UK," as a background track. He recommended that applicants add music to their tapes since "you never know what's going to hit."</p><div type="image" title="survivor andrea and malcolm" height="1132" width="1509" msid="83579556" hostid="261"></div><p>Three-time "Survivor" player Andrea Boehlke agreed that storytelling is <a href="https://www.insider.com/what-the-bake-off-application-is-really-like">a huge component of the audition process</a> and added that the producers are looking for big personalities. </p><p>"... Make sure it's a heightened version of yourself and definitely lean into your personality, your quirks, and what makes you unique," Boehlke advised. </p><p>Boehlke also said that it's important to prove to producers that you have a new way of approaching the <keyword id="5189" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="competition">competition</keyword> so that you can get their attention.</p><p>She added that if you just offer "vague statements about the game," casting directors "probably won't give you another look."</p><h2>Competitors said that the audition process can be extremely lengthy</h2><p><a href="https://www.insider.com/survivor-couples-still-together-2019-1#keith-tollefson-and-whitney-duncan-from-survivor-samoa-are-married-7">Tyson Apostol</a>, who appeared on the series four times and went on to win "Survivor: Blood vs. Water," told Insider that the process can take months from start to finish since "you have to jump through so many hoops" the first time you're on the show.</p><p>"They're like, 'Oh, we'll stay in touch' and 'We'll call you next week,' and then three weeks will go by and they'll text you, 'Sorry, we don't know yet,'" Apostol said.</p><p>He said potential players have to wait on a lot of people, like casting directors and producers, to give their input so you should apply "if you're good at the waiting game."</p><h2>Casting directors may purposefully push applicants' buttons during interviews</h2><p>Freberg said that a week after he sent in his tape, he was chosen for a phone interview. But he added that some casting directors like to "push your buttons" on the call to "see how you're going to react."</p><p>"My casting director is infamous for trying to rattle you and see how you deal with it, like to get the personality out of you on the phone," Freberg said. "And I think she likes me because I stood up to her a lot."</p><h2>During the second round of interviews, applicants may meet Jeff Probst and the producers in-person</h2><div type="image" title="Elaine Stott on Survivor wearing a red shirt and hat in front of a forest" height="1663" width="2217" msid="83579559" hostid="261"></div><p>After applicants make it past the phone interviews, they may be taken to a hotel for the next round of the vetting process. Former players said that this is <a href="https://www.insider.com/contestants-on-what-great-british-baking-show-judges-and-hosts-are-like">typically when they met host</a> Probst and other producers.</p><p>"Survivor: Island of the Idols" player Elaine Stott said that although she was nervous before she met the "Survivor" host, the fact that she was sitting in front of producers and Probst "didn't really matter to me." </p><p>"I told dirty jokes, I flirted, I cussed, I made fun of myself. That's just how I am in general," Stott told Insider. "... I said, 'Jeff, you're just a man, you put your britches on just like I do.'" </p><p>Freberg added that the interviewers just "tell you to start talking" instead of asking direct questions, and Probst sits there "trying to size you up and trying to be intimidating."</p><p>"You just need something funny to say, so I made it up on the spot," Freberg recalled. "... I look at Jeff and I go, 'My grandma's gonna freak the f--- out when she finds out I met you.'"</p><p>Freberg added that his joke "got a big laugh," so he was "off to a good start after that."</p><h2>Some competitors had to apply several times before getting cast </h2><p>Stott said she began auditioning for <a href="https://www.insider.com/surprising-fun-facts-about-survivor-2018-6">"Survivor"</a> in college and wasn't cast until she was in her 30s. </p><p>She added that the video-audition process wasn't easy for her, but she knew that she would be "a shoo-in" once she could talk to the producers face-to-face. </p><p>"I was nervous going into the interviews, but I just knew that once I got to talk to these people and tell them a joke or two, or just be myself, it would be OK," Stott told Insider.</p><h2>Other players were waitlisted as alternates before they were cast </h2><div type="image" title="survivor davie" height="1687" width="2250" msid="83579563" hostid="261"></div><p>"Survivor: David vs. Goliath" player Davie Rickenbacker said that after his interviews in Los Angeles, showrunners didn't tell him if he was on the show or not. </p><p>Ultimately the producers informed Rickenbacker that he had not been cast for the show and that he was on standby as an alternate.</p><p>Rickenbacker told Insider that he was glad he continued training - watching "Survivor" footage and doing "<a href="https://www.insider.com/brainteasers-with-simple-answers-2019-1">little puzzles</a> here and there" - even though he didn't expect to hear back.</p><p>"You have to always be training just in case you get that phone call," Rickenbacker added. </p><h2>Once they're picked, some chosen competitors train as hard as they can by practicing physical challenges and puzzles</h2><div type="image" title="Andrea Boehlke pulling on handles during a challenge on Survivor" height="1992" width="2657" msid="83579566" hostid="261"></div><p>Boehlke said she "went crazy preparing" after she was cast on "Survivor: Redemption Island."</p><p>She told Insider that <a href="https://www.insider.com/i-worked-out-like-angelina-jolie-exercise-routine-2020-1">her extensive training</a> involved "any sort of game or challenge you would see on 'Survivor,'" like balancing on farm fences, building fires, and even practicing with a bow and arrow. </p><p>"I trained very, very hard because I wanted to make sure that I wasn't the weakest in any challenge," Boehlke explained. "Because you never know, especially early on in the game, if you're really bad at a certain challenge, that could be a reason that they vote you out."</p><p>Freberg said that once he was cast on his first season, "Survivor: Philippines," he had a month of preparation before he left for the island. So he binge-watched past seasons, learned to tie knots, and completed puzzles during the day, and then worked as a bartender at night to "pay the bills."</p><h2>But the training process may convince some players to hire a survival coach and embrace the outdoors</h2><p>"Survivor: Island of the Idols" competitor Lauren-Ashley Beck said that she knew she had to get her "a-- into gear" as soon as she was cast. </p><p>To help prepare for her time on the island, Beck <a href="https://www.insider.com/things-to-watch-out-for-when-camping-2019-5">hired a survival coach</a> and began spending more time outdoors, even if just in her backyard. </p><p>"I'm an indoor girl through and through, adventure is not my middle name," Beck told Insider. "I had never slept completely outside."</p><p>Beck built her own shelter outside and slept in it. She said that although "I bawled my eyes out" the first time, she was happy to cry at home rather than when she got to the island.</p><p>But Beck added that she also learned new skills along the way that could prove useful on the show, like making rope out of yucca plants.</p><h2>Before arriving on the island, competitors need to submit outfits for approval </h2><p>"Survivor" <a href="https://www.insider.com/why-great-british-bake-off-bakers-wear-same-clothes">competitors get one outfit</a> on the island to last them up to 39 days, and several of the players confirmed that they sent in clothing options in advance to get approved by the wardrobe crew.</p><p>But the players hardly had the final say - Stott said she had to bring "shorter panties than I would ever wear" since "they don't want everybody to have the same kind of outfit." She said she compromised by requesting to bring her hat.</p><div type="image" title="Tyson Apostol, Jerry Simms Survivor shelter" height="2336" width="3114" msid="83579570" hostid="261"></div><p>Apostol also told Insider that he was "suckered" into wearing his deep V-neck when he sent in options for both game clothes and press-day outfits.</p><p>"The first time I was on the show, they said, 'Submit three outfits that you'll use for press day' - so something you would wear to a business-casual dinner," Apostol told Insider. "For me, it was just like jeans and a T-shirt."</p><p>He said they chose one of his press-day outfits for him to compete in and he thinks they never even looked at his game clothes.</p><p><em>For more details, read <a href="https://www.insider.com/do-survivor-players-pick-their-outfits-how-2021-6">'Survivor' players reveal how the show chooses their only outfit and what it's like wearing it for up to 39 days</a>.</em></p><h2>Some players get a phone call to return for another season</h2><p>Some "Survivor" players hope to get back into the game for another chance at a prize. But Apostol said that former players trying to compete again "just got to live your life" and "not play the waiting game." </p><p>"When you return, they just call you," Apostol said. "... I think the people that have been on the show and want to go back again, and keep asking to go back, actually ruin their chances of going back."</p><p>Boehlke, who has been asked back twice, said it's hard to pass on such "a once in a lifetime opportunity."</p><p>"I'm a very competitive person, like most people that play 'Survivor,' so it's just hard to say, 'No,' because the worst-case scenario is you're voted out first and then you get a free trip in," Boehlke told Insider. </p><p>That said, the game can take both a physical and <a href="https://www.insider.com/great-british-baking-show-season-eight-baker-bullied-wont-watch">mental toll on players</a>, and Boehlke added that she'd need to make sure her mental health is "in check" and have a way to not "take the social-media aspect of it so seriously" before she considered competing again.</p><h2>Players have also been pushing for more diversity in the casting process</h2><div type="image" title="Davie Rickenbacker looking to his right side with the jungle in the background on survivor" height="1998" width="2664" msid="83579573" hostid="261"></div><p>"Survivor" players have also spoken about pushing for more diversity in the show's casting process and beyond. </p><p>Rickenbacker said that he, Beck, and other former players helped <a href="https://people.com/tv/survivor-alumni-sign-petition-demanding-more-diversity-on-the-reality-series/">create and promote a petition</a> for <a href="https://www.insider.com/former-contestants-on-great-british-baking-show-diversity-issues">diversity and inclusion both in front of and behind the camera</a>.</p><p>"We, the Black ['Survivor' players], developed a petition that said this is what we want to change," Rickenbacker said. "We want to see some different crew members. We want to see some different people behind the scenes in casting."</p><p>"It's not going to get better overnight, but I do see that progress is being made," he added.</p><p>In November, <a href="https://www.viacomcbspressexpress.com/cbs-entertainment/releases/view?id=56315">CBS</a> released diversity initiatives for its unscripted series, including a "target for all future unscripted programs to have casts with at least 50% of the contestants being Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC), beginning in the 2021-2022 broadcast season."</p><p>"Survivor: Island of the Idols" player Karishma Patel said she's also hopeful about the future of the show. </p><p>"I think there's going to be a change," Patel told Insider. Players reveal how they got on 'Survivor', from filming an application video to training for the show

<ul class="summary-list"><li>"<keyword id="44080" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="Survivor">Survivor</keyword>" players can wear the same <keyword id="25938" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="underwear">underwear</keyword> for up to 39 days, which comes with <keyword id="6354750" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="health">health</keyword> risks.</li><li>This can lead to painful urinary-tract infections, which multiple people spoke about having.</li><li>Competitors used to get swimsuits to change into, but the last time they got them was in 2018.</li></ul><p>When <a href="https://www.insider.com/category/freelancer%20survivor-feature">"Survivor" players</a> compete for a million dollars on national television, they accept the risks involved with living on a remote island with limited food and water. </p><p>For starters, those on the CBS show must compete in the same outfit until they make it to the finale or are voted off the island.</p><p>This often means wearing the same pair of underwear for up to 39 days, which can come with painful, uncomfortable, and serious consequences. </p><h2>Multiple players Insider spoke to said they'd experienced urinary-tract infections while on the island or shortly after they left</h2><p>Four of the five female "Survivor" players whom Insider spoke to told us they had or contracted urinary-tract infections <a href="https://www.insider.com/what-it-was-like-having-a-period-on-survivor-2021-6">during their time on "Survivor."</a> Three of these women competed during season 39, "Island of the Idols." </p><p><a href="https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/urinary-tract-infection/symptoms-causes/syc-20353447">Urinary-tract infections</a> are usually caused when bacteria enter the urinary tract through the urethra and begin to multiply. </p><p>Late into her season, the "Survivor: Island of the Idols" competitor Karishma Patel said she experienced a "really bad" <keyword id="44807" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="UTI">UTI</keyword>.</p><p>"It was a constant, 24-hour pain that I couldn't shake no matter what," Patel said. "If anybody's ever had a UTI, it is one of the most painful things you can go through."</p><p>Her fellow player Janet Carbin recalled approaching Patel when she saw her doubled over in pain at camp.</p><p>"I remember her laying in the hammock and looking like she was in pain, and I was like, 'What's going on?'" Carbin said. "She's like, 'I can't sleep. I have a UTI.'" </p><p>Patel told Carbin that the on-location medic was giving her antibiotics to help clear her infection. Carbin said she started experiencing pain from her own UTI later that same day. </p><p>"She was brave enough to say something about hers, and I knew mine was starting, and I was in denial about it," Carbin told Insider. </p><p>But Carbin also recalled being worried that if she had a UTI and needed an antibiotic she could get kicked off the show. In 40 seasons of "Survivor," 15 players have been <a href="https://www.goldderby.com/gallery/survivor-medevacs-all-of-the-shows-medical-evacuations/survivor-list-of-medevacs-james-clement/">medically evacuated from the show</a>, some for severe infections. </p><p>Carbin said she confided in Patel, who sneaked into her stash of antibiotics to offer some to Carbin. After, Carbin said, she visited the medic to get her own antibiotics, which cleared up her infection "in a heartbeat." </p><p>But Patel said she struggled with some <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/antibiotic-use/do-and-dont.html">side effects</a> from her medication. </p><p>"It didn't work on me, unfortunately," Patel said. "Instead, it caused some pretty bad side effects like fatigue, dizziness, and diarrhea."</p><p>Patel said she had several days on the island when she was forced to choose between debilitating pain from the UTI or the adverse side effects from the antibiotic itself. </p><div type="image" title="&quot;Survivor: Island of the Idols&quot; players standing on the beach covered in sand during a challenge." height="1792" width="2390" msid="84652668" hostid="261"></div><h2>Players with vaginas are most at risk, and they can deal with some serious consequences if their UTI isn't properly treated</h2><p>Urologist Dr. Premal Patel told Insider that constantly wearing a "less-than-hygienic kind of clothing" for such a long time is bound to come with risks. </p><p>"If they're unable to change the pair of underwear and they're spending a long time in the sun, that welcomes in dirt, sand, sweat, bodily fluids, rashes, or any of the skin conditions," Dr. Patel said. </p><p>Plus the warm, moist environment created by wearing wet clothes for a long time, plus poor hygiene, can increase one's risk of contracting a UTI. </p><p>Generally, people with vaginas have a higher chance of contracting <a href="https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/kidney-infection/symptoms-causes/syc-20353387#:~:text=Bacteria%20that%20enter%20your%20urinary,your%20bloodstream%20to%20your%20kidneys.">urinary-tract infections</a>.</p><p>Gynecologist Dr. Mary Jane Minkin said it comes down to "simple anatomy." A vagina has a shorter urethra and is closer to the bladder; the penis has a lengthened urethra, so "there's a much greater journey for bacteria, which are trying to ascend, to get in from the outside world."</p><p>Still, Dr. Patel said, wearing the same pair of underwear for such a drastic amount of time "could possibly increase" anyone's risk of infections regardless of anatomy. And urinary-tract infections can spread to vital organs, like kidneys, if left unattended or treated improperly. </p><p>Patel said her UTI ended up escalating to a frightening degree by the time her season ended and she flew back to the United States. Days after the infection began, she said, "traces of that infection" spread to her bladder and she had to go to the hospital. </p><p>"I was on IV antibiotics to get that cleared out of me," she said. </p><p>The three-time competitor Andrea Boehlke - who did have a swimsuit during her season - also said she contracted a urinary-tract infection on season 34 "Game Changers." She said she was in "a lot of pain" when she returned home. </p><p>"I realized that I had a UTI, but the UTI had actually turned into a kidney infection," Boehlke said. </p><p>The <a href="https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/kidney-infection/symptoms-causes/syc-20353387#:~:text=Bacteria%20that%20enter%20your%20urinary,your%20bloodstream%20to%20your%20kidneys.">kidney infection</a> was so severe, Boehlke said, that she ended up in the hospital for a week and lost another 10 pounds on top of the weight she had already lost during the competition.</p><p>During her hospital stay, Boehlke said, the infection started affecting her other organs as it <a href="https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/kidney-infection/symptoms-causes/syc-20353387#:~:text=Having%20a%20kidney%20infection%20can,Pregnancy%20complications.">spread through her bloodstream</a>. </p><p>"My heart was in a weakened state," Boehlke recalled. "My whole body was out of whack." </p><p>Fortunately, multiple players told Insider, CBS covered their medical costs - including exams, treatments, and therapy - after their season ended.</p><div type="image" title="Lauren Ashley Beck counting on her fingers on an episode of survivor" height="1688" width="3000" msid="84652669" hostid="261"></div><h2><strong>Players have limited options for cleaning their clothes - and doing so can put them in compromising positions </strong></h2><p>Having only one outfit forces "Survivor" players to find <a href="https://www.insider.com/do-survivor-players-pick-their-outfits-how-2021-6">unique ways to keep their clothes as clean as possible</a> to cut down on the spread of bacteria.</p><p>For example, the three-time competitor Malcolm Freberg boiled his clothes in the pot players use for cooking rice. Dr. Patel said it's not "ideal" to clean clothes in something people cook food in but agreed that boiling clothes is a surefire way to kill any bacteria. </p><p>The "Survivor: Island of the Idols" player Lauren-Ashley Beck - who said she also contracted a UTI on her season and received antibiotics "immediately" after filming wrapped -  cleaned her outfit with a "ton of hand sanitizer," which competitors are given access to.</p><p>Hand sanitizer can reduce the number of bacteria on something but <a href="https://www.insider.com/the-difference-between-sanitizer-and-disinfectant">won't kill all germs</a>. Minkin also advised against putting hand sanitizer near one's perineum (the area between the anus and scrotum or vulva), though, because "it's pretty tough stuff for a delicate tissue like that."</p><p>No matter which method competitors use, Dr. Patel said, players should ensure their clothes dry completely before they put them back on. He said "constant wetness is not great" and causes skin to break down. </p><p>But waiting for clothes to dry isn't always a comfortable or practical option <a href="https://www.insider.com/what-its-like-being-on-survivor-contestants-reveal-2021-6">when you're being filmed</a> and have nothing else to wear. </p><p>Carbin said she felt exposed when trying to clean her clothes, especially when it came to underwear. </p><p>"The only way we could wash our underwear was to run around naked," Carbin said. </p><p>Patel said she tried to time her laundry routines carefully for the same reason so that she wasn't "flashing everyone" but could try to dry her clothes as much as possible before putting them back on. </p><p>The "Survivor: Island of the Idols" competitor Elaine Stott said she tried to be cautious about wearing wet clothes. During challenges, she opted to wear just underwear so she wouldn't get her pants wet. </p><p>After challenges, she said she would take her wet underwear off and wear her dry pants to "free lip" - air-dry her vagina - back at camp because she was worried about possible infections. </p><h2><strong>Until season 36, players were able to bring swimsuits to change into</strong></h2><p>For many seasons, "Survivor" players had swimsuits that they could wear as an alternate outfit. But the last time players were shown in swimsuits was season 36, "Ghost Island," which aired from February to May 2018.</p><p>It's unclear why exactly players stopped receiving swimsuits, but that same month, May 2018, the show's host Jeff Probst told <a href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/survivor-pools-are-new-fantasy-football-hollywood-writers-1109524/">The Hollywood Reporter</a> that actor and director Tyler Perry suggested that "filthier" swimwear make it onto the show.</p><p>"Next season we aren't giving them swimming suits at all, just a sewing kit," Probst joked about "Survivor" players in the interview. </p><p>The season 37  "David vs. Goliath" competitor Davie Rickenbacker - who confirmed his 2018 season didn't receive swimsuits a few months after Probst's comment - said he blames Perry's supposed influence.</p><p>He said he believes bathing suits "were withheld" because Perry suggested the show "look more authentic." Perry, a fan of the show, previously contributed to "Survivor" in 2013, when he suggested <a href="https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/blogs/tv-news/how-tyler-perry-competely-changed-this-season-of--survivor-201245320.html">a "special idol" twist</a>.</p><p>A source close to Perry clarified to Insider that the actor never suggested players don't receive swimwear but rather suggested bathing suits look more aged to fit in with the nature of the show.</p><p>Multiple season 39 players told Insider they were confused when they didn't receive swimwear for their season because they were asked to submit bathing-suit options before going on the show. </p><p>"We were talking about it amongst each other, and we think that there was a push towards making us look more like we were shipwrecked," Patel said. </p><p>As of the most recent season, season 40 "Winners at War," swimsuits were still out of gameplay. It was Tyson Apostol's fourth time on the show and first time competing without a swimsuit. </p><p>"I had the sickest swimsuit, too, and was so pumped to wear it on the show, but they never gave us our swimmies," he said. </p><p>Representatives for Probst didn't immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.</p><p><strong style="background-color: #ffffff;"><div type="image" title="jeff probst stands with his hands behind his back in front of a torch on survivor" height="1125" width="2000" msid="84652670" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><h2><strong>A swimsuit or even just a spare pair of underwear could make a huge difference for players, especially those with vaginas</strong></h2><p>In rare cases - typically if a garment is lost or unwearable -<a href="https://www.insider.com/do-survivor-players-pick-their-outfits-how-2021-6"> players have gotten clothing items replaced</a>. But most competitors are stuck with one pair of underwear for the entirety of their season. </p><p>Dr. Patel said he would encourage the network to consider giving players swimsuits or, at the very least, a change of clothes. </p><p>He said if players had a second outfit they could change out of wet clothes and dry them overnight. They could avoid sitting around in wet bottoms, which Minkin strongly discourages.</p><p>"That's a wet, moist, warm environment - it's not great for keeping you free from bacteria and yeast," Minkin said.</p><p>Dr. Patel said an extra set of clothes might also <a href="https://www.insider.com/how-did-past-players-apply-for-survivor-video-tips-2021-6">help competitors</a> clean and dry their clothes without being forced into vulnerable positions. He pointed out that cisgender male contestants might be more comfortable being topless while their clothes dry, while others "may not have that luxury." </p><p>Carbin said she thinks bringing the swimsuits back could help prevent some players' health problems while keeping "the theme of the show realistic." </p><p>In fact, Carbin said, many "Survivor" fans questioned the lack of swimsuits during her season. </p><p>"I think the viewers would prefer to see people in bathing suits because <a href="https://www.insider.com/things-most-people-dont-know-about-survivor-fun-facts-2021-6">so many viewers asked us</a>, 'Why don't you guys wear bathing suits?'" she recalled. In response, Carbin told fans that it "wasn't our choice." </p><p><strong style="background-color: #ffffff;"><div type="image" title="Elaine Stott appears wearing a hat and neck gaiter on Survivor" height="1687" width="2250" msid="84652672" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><h2><strong><strong style="background-color: #ffffff;">Players w</strong>ant to create an open dialogue about health risks so 'Survivor' can keep improving </strong></h2><p>Carbin made it clear that she loves "Survivor" and said she never viewed the <a href="https://www.insider.com/worst-and-grossest-things-about-playing-on-survivor-2021-6">inherent health risks on the show</a> as a "disadvantage" but simply an additional challenge to overcome. </p><p>"I had a UTI, Karishma had a UTI, Lauren had a UTI. You know what? We were strong enough to handle it and deal with it," Carbin said. </p><p>She invited CBS to "take a look" into some of these potentially underexplored topics, like vaginal health, because there's "nothing wrong" with taking precautions.</p><p>Stott also said she'd happily compete again, risks and all. But she agreed that there are steps "Survivor" can take to help players with vaginas "fight stuff they really shouldn't be battling anyway." </p><p>"It's a show that we love," Stott said. 'Survivor' players wear the same underwear for up to 39 days with potentially life-threatening consequences

<p class="source"><span>Jeffrey Neira/CBS Entertainment</span></p><p class="caption">Zeke Smith on "Survivor: Gamechangers."</p>While getting blindsided is common on "Survivor," the on-air outing of the reality show's contestant Zeke Smith as transgender not only surprised the veteran contender, but it outraged fans.<p>In a moment of desperation during the tribal council, Jeff Varner, a three-season "Survivor" contender, hoped to avoid elimination on Wednesday's episode of "Survivor: Gamechangers" by proving that Smith was a master of deception. In addition to revealing Smith's secret alliance with fan favorite Ozzy Lusth, Varner hoped to prove his point by revealing that Smith had been hiding that he's transgender.</p><p>The ripple effects of Varner's decision came quickly. On the episode, fellow competitors and host Jeff Probst berated him. He was then eliminated from the game by an oral vote as Probst felt it was unnecessary to go through with the formal ballot vote after Varner's actions.</p><p>Fans swifty reacted with rage on social media. Here's a sample of the outraged tweets:</p><p>While he first defended outing Smith on the show, Varner ended the episode with apologies and a tearful goodbye. I cannot imagine anyone thinking what was done to Zeke was OK on any level, under any circumstances, and certainly not simply because there was a million dollars on the line."</span><p><span>While Smith comforted Varner in the final moments of the episode, he wrote a guest column for <a href="http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/live-feed/survivor-zeke-smith-outed-as-transgender-guest-column-991514" target="_blank">The Hollywood Reporter</a> published on Thursday that did not let Varner off the hook. In it, Smith praised the social experiment that is "Survivor," said he has never regretted being on the show, and opened up about the hardships he experienced while transitioning into a man. He also said that he hasn't forgiven Varner for what he did and doesn't feel they could be friends now.</span></p><p><span><span>"Thankfully, my tribemates rebuffed his hateful tactics," Smith wrote.
