<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="13407951" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="wendi-mclendon-covey" source="Orion">Wendi McLendon-Covey</keyword> has said her "<keyword id="13407953" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="the-goldbergs" source="Orion">The Goldbergs</keyword>" costar <keyword id="13407952" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="jeff-garlin" source="Orion">Jeff Garlin</keyword> "didn't want to be there."</li><li>Garlin left the sitcom in December after allegations of on-set misconduct.</li></ul><p>Wendi McLendon-Covey has spoken out about her former costar Jeff Garlin, who departed "The Goldbergs" in December.</p><p>Garlin, who played family patriarch Murray Goldberg, left the <keyword id="11896774" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="abc" source="Orion">ABC</keyword> sitcom midway through the filming of season nine after <a href="https://www.insider.com/jeff-garlin-leaves-the-goldbergs-amid-inappropriate-behavior-accusations-2021-12">allegations of misconduct</a> on set.</p><p>"The Goldbergs" has compensated for Garlin's absence with the use of stand-ins, outtakes, and CGI. </p><p>Freelance journalist Noel Murray tweeted a video example of this, which showed an outtake of Garlin awkwardly inserted into a new scene.</p><p>"They should either cancel The Goldbergs or kill off Jeff Garlin's character because the workarounds they've been using this season ain't working," he <a href="https://twitter.com/NoelMu/status/1503380010358427649">tweeted</a>.</p><div type="image" title="Jeff Garlin on &quot;The Goldbergs.&quot;" height="2000" width="3000" msid="90297563" hostid="261"></div><p>Star Wendi McLendon-Covey, who played Garlin's on-screen wife Beverly, responded to Murray's criticism.</p><p>"Thanks for the great suggestion Noel!" she wrote.</p><p>"This season threw us for a loop because a.) it's hard to incorporate someone who doesn't want to be there and wants to leave mid-scene, and b.) we werent about to re-write the 2nd half of the season."</p><p>"We're doing our best," McLendon-Covey added.</p><p>Garlin has previously spoken about the allegations regarding his on-set behavior.</p><p>In December, prior to Garlin coming to <a href="https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/tv/story/2021-12-16/jeff-garlin-leaving-the-goldbergs">a mutual agreement with Sony Pictures Television to leave the series</a>, the actor <a href="https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2021/12/jeff-garlin-responds-to-talk-of-misbehavior-on-set">told Vanity Fair</a>, "It's always the same thing. It's about me and my silliness on set."</p><p>"They don't think it's appropriate. I do. That's where we're at. I've not been fired because of it. We just think differently."</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Jeff Garlin has exited "The Goldbergs" after accusations of inappropriate on-set behavior, according to a representative from <keyword id="11896774" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="abc" source="Orion">ABC</keyword>. </li><li>Employees of the show said they were uncomfortable with Garlin's verbal and physical conduct, according to Vanity Fair.</li></ul><p>Jeff Garlin has exited the ABC sitcom "The Goldbergs" after multiple <keyword id="12026949" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="misconduct" source="Orion">misconduct</keyword> investigations, according to a representative from ABC. </p><p>Garlin, who plays Murray Goldberg — the family's patriarch — on the show, reached a mutual agreement with the show regarding his departure, a source close to the production said.</p><p>He was believed to have one more day of shooting left for this season, <a href="https://deadline.com/2021/12/jeff-garlin-exit-the-goldbergs-hr-investigations-season-9-1234892030/">according to Deadline</a>. </p><p>It is unclear how his departure will be addressed in the show. </p><p><a href="https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2021/12/jeff-garlin-responds-to-talk-of-misbehavior-on-set">In a lengthy interview with Vanity Fair</a> last month, Garlin confirmed he had been the subject of HR investigations into his on-set behavior and squashed rumors that he was fired from the show. </p><p>According to Vanity Fair, some people on set were uncomfortable with Garlin's verbal and physical conduct — not only was his language inappropriate, but he reportedly would often touch or hug people who were not comfortable with that kind of contact. </p><p>Similarly, a "Goldbergs" employee told Deadline that Garlin is "extremely verbally and emotionally abusive." </p><p>"There was no… Nothing physical by any stretch of the imagination. And the verbal part was a joke that was completely missed," Garlin told Vanity Fair. </p><p><keyword id="11893589" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="news" source="Orion">News</keyword> of a potential tenth season of "The Goldbergs" has yet to be announced, Deadline reported. </p><p>Garlin is also currently appearing in the eleventh season of "Curb Your Enthusiasm" and is set to star alongside Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie in December 2022's "Babylon." </p><p>Representatives for Garlin did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment. Even though it's been years since the hit show concluded, Henrie told Insider that they've "kept in super close touch and continued our friendship."</p><p>"We've gotten to see each other mature in our own paths, in our own lanes, in our own ways — which has only strengthened our friendship," the 31-year-old actor said. </p><div type="image" title="wizards of waverly place season 4" height="1405" width="1874" msid="77684231" hostid="261"></div><h2>Gomez 'gravitated towards' the way Henrie's film handled the usual 'blonde stereotype' seen in teen movies </h2><p>BOLD <keyword id="4578" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="entertainment">Entertainment</keyword>'s "This Is the Year," set for digital release on August 28, marks Henrie's directorial debut. The movie centers on high school senior Josh (played by Lorenzo Henrie, David's real-life younger brother), who embarks on a road trip with his friends to see lovelytheband perform at a music festival, all in the hopes of impressing a popular girl named Zoey (Alyssa Jirrels). </p><p>Henrie said that one of their "main goals" was to give Zoey a proper character arc with "depth" and "genuine talent."</p><div type="image" title="this is the year zoey" height="1124" width="1499" msid="77684233" hostid="261"></div><p>"[Selena] really loved that Zoey was one that dealt with a talent that she needed to learn to embrace herself but also find someone who would support that talent," Henrie said.</p><p>He added: "We kind of wanted to do both with her character, show that being in a relationship with someone who isn't trying to empower you is not a good thing. And also, learn to not be embarrassed by her own talent."</p><h2><strong>Making the movie was like a mini 'Wizards of Waverly Place' reunion with 'constant laughter' and 'constant joy'</strong></h2><p>Coincidentally, lovelytheband guitarist Jordan Greenwald, who shares a mutual friend with Henrie, is the son of "WoWP" creator Todd J. Greenwald. In addition to Henrie and Gomez working on the project, Gregg Sulkin, who stared as Mason Greyback on "WoWP," portrayed Zoey's self-centered boyfriend, hilariously named Kale (short for Kaleb). "WoWP" alum Jeff Garlin, who portrayed Uncle Kelbo, starred as Josh's teacher in the movie.  </p><p>"We loved 'Wizards' because we got to make people smile, and getting to be a part of a film, which has the same goal, just made all of us so happy," Henrie told us. "It was constant laughter, constant jokes, constant throwback memories, nostalgia."</p><div type="image" title="this is the year david henrie" height="1188" width="1584" msid="77684234" hostid="261"></div><p>Henrie added that even filming promotional items for "This Is the Year" with Gomez was surreal. </p><p>"She was just going, 'David, do you believe we're here right now? Are we on Disney? Are we back in 2009 or is it 2020? What's going on?'" Henrie recalled. "We were constantly joking about that and literally at some point, we were like, 'Oh I miss this!'"</p><h2>Henrie was 'proud' to see how assertive Gomez was as an executive producer</h2><p>"I was so proud to see her, as an adult, take charge and have great ideas on what we could do to make this event we're doing a success," Henrie told us, referring to the film's <a href="https://www.thisistheyear.film/">live digital premiere that's happening on August 28</a>.</p><p>The <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yVdH3QacEXc">event</a> will include a performance from lovelytheband plus a cast Q&amp;A hosted by TikTok stars Charli and Dixie D'Amelio. Plus, proceeds from each ticket will go to the PLUS1 COVID-19 Relief Fund, supporting people affected by the pandemic through organizations World Central Kitchen and Sweet Relief.</p><div type="image" title="this is the year mikey josh" height="1193" width="1590" msid="77684235" hostid="261"></div><p>Aside from helping to organize the upcoming virtual event, Henrie said that Gomez's public support of the film has "been incredible" and described their collaborative process as "organic" and "non-pressured."</p><p>"It's been truly great to see how much she supports the message of this film and wanting to make people feel good right now," the actor told us.
