<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="862838" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="pickup-trucks">Pickup trucks</keyword> are the best-selling vehicles in the US.</li><li>Despite this, I have never understood the appeal of the pickup truck.</li><li>But after spending 10 days with a <keyword id="7086137" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="jeep-gladiator">Jeep Gladiator</keyword> pickup, I finally understand it.</li></ul><p>I was shocked — shocked, I tell you — the first time I discovered that pickup <keyword id="47193" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="trucks">trucks</keyword> have handily outsold passenger <keyword id="20632" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Cars">cars</keyword> here in the US for the past couple of years. I knew pickups were popular, but not <em>that</em> popular.</p><p>This ignorance was most certainly rooted in my own personal taste in vehicles. </p><p>See, I have never understood the appeal of a pickup truck. I have never understood why anyone — an individual who hauls nothing on a regular basis — would ever need something as giant as a pickup when perfectly good sedans, wagons, and even crossovers exist. Seems like a load of wasted space to me! </p><p>In college, my European roommate wondered aloud if all the American pickup drivers she saw on our roads were farmers, because apparently that's who drives pickups in Belgium. I attempted to explain the US infatuation with pickups and other big vehicles, though I privately agreed with her.</p><p><div type="image" title="2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon87" height="3000" width="2000" msid="76466894" hostid="261"></div></p><p>But the numbers don't lie. According to automotive sales and data statistics site <a href="https://www.goodcarbadcar.net/2019-us-vehicle-sales-figures-by-model/">GoodCarBadCar</a>, pickup trucks were the best-selling cars in the US in 2019. Ford, coming in first, <a href="https://media.ford.com/content/dam/fordmedia/North%20America/US/2020/01/06/sales-4q2019.pdf">sold 896,526 F-Series pickups</a>. <a href="https://www.thedrive.com/news/31716/ram-pickups-outsold-chevrolet-silverado-in-2019-for-first-time-in-history">Ram sold 633,694 pickups</a>. <a href="https://www.statista.com/statistics/204473/best-selling-trucks-in-the-united-states-from-january-to-october-2011/">Chevrolet sold 575,569 Silverados</a>. That is a massive, massive number of trucks.</p><p>Maybe all those country and western songs about dudes loving their pickups are onto something. </p><p>So, after about seven years of covering the automotive industry, there was no point in avoiding it any longer: I, feeling silly, booked myself a pickup truck, borrowing a <keyword id="9385536" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="jeep-gladiator-rubicon">Jeep Gladiator Rubicon</keyword> mid-size pickup for a few days. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jeep-gladiator-review-car-reviews-specs-price-truck-pickup-wrangler-2020-6">You can read the full review here</a>. </p><p>My first hour in the truck, exiting Brooklyn, was embarrassing. Not only was the thing garish and orange and with blocky black trim, I felt like people were staring at me. <em>I</em> knew that I could have easily fit all my luggage in a comparable SUV and they probably all knew it, too. The unessential truth of the whole situation weighed heavily on me. I felt like I was cosplaying <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rf7GfUORHtw">a Tim McGraw song</a>. </p><p>And then I was struck by an even worse thought: Did people think I was over-compensating for something? Oh, <em>no</em>. </p><p><div type="image" title="2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon104" height="3000" width="2000" msid="76466898" hostid="261"></div>But then I shut up and let the <keyword id="161559" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="jeep">Jeep</keyword> do its thing. It doesn't do to review something with preconceived notions and biases already written out in your head. </p><p>And so, the resulting days spent with the Gladiator were … extremely normal. I expected the balance to be way off when driving it around since there's virtually no weight over the back wheels and all the weight over the front. I expected to have that sensation kicked into me every time I took a turn: <em>You're driving a pickup truck! You're driving a pickup truck! You're driving a pickup truck! Down a dirt road! </em></p><p>But in reality? I basically forgot I had a five-foot bed sticking out behind the passenger cabin. I was reminded only when I had to change lanes on the highway (the bed is big and difficult to see around) and pulling out of parallel parking spots (the backup camera is super handy). </p><p>The Gladiator was comfortable. It was easy to drive. I had no trouble spending a few hundred miles in it. I emerged feeling ready for a few hundred more.</p><p><div type="image" title="2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon123" height="3000" width="2000" msid="76466900" hostid="261"></div></p><p>The interior leathers were nice. The Gladiator had heated seats and a heated steering wheel. USB ports. Cupholders. Cruise control. A quality stereo system. Front and rear cameras. Dual-zone climate controls. In short, it came with all the bells and whistles that a nicely outfitted SUV would also come with. And with an MSRP of $62,000, it was even priced as such. </p><p>During the course of my 10-day loan, I only needed to use — truly use —the bed once. My boyfriend's parents needed us to move two pieces of furniture, so we packed up the truck with all our luggage and tossed the two director's chairs in the bed. And then we drove everything across the state of Vermont. This would not have been possible in a crossover or SUV. There was no way it would have all fit.</p><p>Other than that one time, though, the bed stayed empty.</p><p>But this is the new reality of pickup trucks in the US, I suppose. No longer are they rough work tools, reserved exclusively for job sites. Even if you have zero intention of hauling anything in your pickup, you can now get one and reasonably expect to ride around in something with the feel of a luxury SUV.</p><p><div type="image" title="2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon44" height="1333" width="2000" msid="76466904" hostid="261"></div></p><p>Just for fun, I went on Ford's site to build myself a 2020 F-150. After selecting the SuperCab option and giving it a 5.5-foot bed, I then optioned it out with 10-way power driver and passenger seats with heat and memory, a premium audio system, a 360-degree camera, a hard and folding pickup box cover, Rapid Red exterior paint, a blue-accented interior, 17-inch forged wheels that I just liked, a heated steering wheel, and dual-zone temperature control. </p><p>The F-150 also came with tech like adaptive cruise control, blind-spot information system, pro trailer backup assist, and reverse sensing system. </p><p>The final cost for my silly truck? $71,750. To put that into perspective, that's a mere few thousand dollars shy of a Mercedes-Benz GLS SUV — but with way more utility to boot. </p><p>But I get it now. I do. What with gas being as cheap as it is and automakers letting you option your truck out like it's a living room on wheels — why not, right? Why go small when you can go big? Surround yourself with this cocoon of protection and cushiness that takes just one finger to drive. I would just advise against <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-american-auto-delinquencies-are-piling-up-2019-3">spending beyond your means</a> to get it. </p><p>If you are a pickup truck owner and you are reading this, know that I don't know your life. Maybe you use the bed all the time. I don't know! </p><p><div type="image" title="2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon70" height="3000" width="2000" msid="76466908" hostid="261"></div></p><p>But maybe you're like me: someone who finds just as much utility in a sedan but is holding out for that one instance when the pickup becomes handy. Maybe to help your friend move just that one time. Maybe to bring the mulch back from the store because you spontaneously decided to do your own yard work this year. Maybe to take home that free coffee table you spotted on someone's curb while out running errands. </p><p>The lesson I learned is that we just don't know when life will suddenly spring a pickup situation on us, so why not be prepared? My mistake in Brooklyn was thinking that people who don't haul stuff regularly also shouldn't need a pickup. </p><p>Pickups afford us a rainy-day option. It is this option when paired with the duality of also being a luxury vehicle, that makes them so alluring. In a way, yes, it sort of does condemn the whole point of the pickup truck to an afterthought. </p><p>But the security of knowing that a big bed is available to you just in case you need it? That's what makes the whole exercise worth it. </p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The Gladiator is <keyword id="161559" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="jeep">Jeep</keyword>'s version of a mid-size, off-road-capable pickup truck.</li><li>It has a bunch of fun Easter eggs hidden all over it, including some vintage-inspired ones that nod to Jeep's WWII past.</li><li>I found seven in total on the Gladiator Rubicon I reviewed.</li></ul><p>It's not hard to imagine how Jeep has built up a bit of a cult following over the years.</p><p>Jeeps are blocky, lovable things, full of charisma in both their talents and imperfections. </p><p>Whether or not you like them, you have an opinion about them. They make you feel things, which is more than I can say about most of the anonymous lumps of metal driving around on US roads these days. </p><p>Jeep knows this, which is why it has a habit of putting Easter eggs in its <keyword id="20632" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Cars">cars</keyword> — special, hidden details sure to delight its customers. <a href="https://www.insider.com/jeep-hidden-shapes-easter-eggs-cars-2020-5">The Jeep Renegade has them</a> and so does the <keyword id="7086137" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="jeep-gladiator">Jeep Gladiator</keyword>.</p><p>During my many days spent with the 2020 <keyword id="9385536" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="jeep-gladiator-rubicon">Jeep Gladiator Rubicon</keyword> mid-size pickup truck — which you can <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jeep-gladiator-review-car-reviews-specs-price-truck-pickup-wrangler-2020-6">read a review of</a>, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jeep-gladiator-rubicon-review-photo-gallery-specs-price-truck-pickup-2020-6">view a photo gallery</a>, and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jeep-gladiator-door-and-roof-removal-guide-2020-6">learn how to pull off its doors and roof</a> — I found seven Easter eggs. There might very well be more! But I think I was pretty thorough.</p><p>Here they are.</p><h2><strong>1. The Willys MB drawing on all four of the truck's wheels.</strong></h2><div type="image" title="2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon89" height="1333" width="2000" msid="76428851" hostid="261"></div><p>The Gladiator Rubicon comes with a set of 17-inch polished black aluminum wheels. If you look carefully, these wheels have a little red drawing of a Willys MB on them.</p><p>The Willys MB was built as a light military utility vehicle with off-roading abilities. It was manufactured for and used by the Allied Forces in World War II from 1941 to 1945. George C. Marshall, World War II Army Chief of Staff General, <a href="https://armyhistory.org/the-jeep-an-american-icon/">called it</a> "America's greatest contribution to modern warfare."</p><p>By the time the war ended, the Willys was so popular and successful that over 650,000 of them had been produced. </p><h2><strong>2. The "419" stamped into the left side of the bed.</strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon121" height="1333" width="2000" msid="76428856" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>If you look to the left of the Gladiator's bed, you'll see a subtle stamp: a heart and the number 419. People familiar with the region will recognize this as the Toledo, Ohio, area code. It's where Fiat Chrysler Automobiles has its sprawling, 312-acre Toledo Complex, which is where the Jeep Wrangler and Gladiator are currently built.</p><h2><strong>3. The pictures of two-door Jeep Wranglers on the climate system.</strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon134" height="1333" width="2000" msid="76428860" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>I've actually never seen this on any of the cars I've test-driven: an outline of a specific car on the climate system, rather than just a universal, anonymous, and vaguely automotive shape. Obviously, a Jeep Wrangler has a very distinctive and iconic shape, so why not make that the image on the air recirculation button? </p><h2><strong>4. Another Willys MB etching on the windshield.</strong></h2><div type="image" title="2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon135" height="1333" width="2000" msid="76428867" hostid="261"></div><p>On the lower left-hand corner of the windshield, you'll see another etching of the Willys MB. It's positioned so that it looks like it's about to climb up the edge of the glass. It's freaking adorable.</p><h2><strong>5. Flip-flops on the passenger-side windshield cowl.</strong></h2><div type="image" title="2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon146" height="1333" width="2000" msid="76428871" hostid="261"></div><p>If you look carefully on the passenger-side windshield cowl, you'll see a little etching of a pair of flip-flops. Allegedly, this Easter egg is a nod to a longtime Jeep fan and veteran car journalist, Rick Péwé.</p><p>Péwé made an appearance in this <a href="https://youtu.be/PVLMewr6Dvw?t=281">The Fast Lane Car video</a> from September 2018. When asked about the flip-flop etching on the Jeep, Péwé held out one of his open-toed-sandaled feet as an explanation. "Yeah, that's why," he laughed. Péwé is known for his love of open-toed footwear.</p><p>Over the years, he's "given Jeep a lot of input on design and function," he said. </p><h2><strong>6. The Willys appearing again in the gauge cluster.</strong></h2><div type="image" title="2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon147" height="1333" width="2000" msid="76428876" hostid="261"></div><p>This one, admittedly, I would not have found had <a href="https://www.thetransmission.com/2019/10/03/jeepgladiator-flipflops/">The Transmission</a> not first pointed it out: the Willys shows up in the gauge cluster when you cycle through to the Trip Info screen. There, you'll see an Army-green war Jeep that looks as though it's ready to storm the beaches of Normandy. </p><h2><strong>7. The steering wheel design.</strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="2020 Jeep Gladiator5" height="1333" width="2000" msid="76428878" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>Also spotted by The Transmission, you'll notice the Gladiator's steering wheel wears a circle around the Jeep logo with a peculiar three-pronged design. "The company's marketing team informed us that it's a nod to the original 1940s-era steering wheel, which was a three-spoke design," the outlet reported. </p><p>Next time you find yourself in or near a Jeep Gladiator, be sure to look out for these Easter eggs. </p>

Different states have different wing mirror requirements; some require both, some don't care. It varies. It's better to do a little research instead of being hit with a ticket. </p><p>Both the Wrangler and Gladiator come with a tool kit in a handy little nylon pouch, so you don't have to worry about finding the right-sized tools. It comes with all you'll need to remove the doors and the roof. </p><p><strong><div type="image" title="2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon10" height="1333" width="2000" msid="76372006" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>Well, that and a little bit of muscle. </p><p>Here's how we did it.</p><h2><strong style="color: #000000;">1. Remove the front two roof panels.</strong></h2><p>Arguably this doesn't have to be the first step, but it gets the roof panels out of the way for when you'll need to remove the front doors. Plus, it's the easiest step.</p><p>As its name suggests, the optional three-piece hardtop comes apart into three pieces. The two front pieces, located above the driver and front passenger, come off extremely easily and can be removed in a matter of seconds. </p><p>Simply undo:</p><p>The big latch beneath the sun visor.</p><p><div type="image" title="2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon7" height="1333" width="2000" msid="76372008" hostid="261"></div></p><p>And the three L-shaped latches along the rest of the panel. </p><p><div type="image" title="2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon9" height="1333" width="2000" msid="76372012" hostid="261"></div></p><p>Lift it up and off; they're not heavy at all. Roll all the windows down.</strong></h2><p>This is useful because you can grip the doors more easily along their frame with the window rolled down. Undo both bolts in all four doors.</strong></h2><p>Looking at the Gladiator, you'll notice two exterior hinges holding the doors to the body. Using the T50 bit and the ratcheting socket wrench, unscrew and remove the bolts from both hinges of all four doors. You'll wind up with eight screws in total.</p><p><div type="image" title="2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon15" height="1333" width="2000" msid="76372028" hostid="261"></div></p><p>When unscrewing, take care to place your hand behind the wrench so you don't mess up your paint. Don't even worry — Jeep has you covered. Under the left rear passenger seat is a little compartment where you can store the bolts for safekeeping. </p><p><strong><div type="image" title="2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon18" height="1333" width="2000" msid="76372034" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><h2><strong style="color: #000000;">4. Undo electrical harnesses on the front doors.</strong></h2><p>Since the Gladiator has electronically adjustable windows, wing mirrors, and lane-change alerts, there is a bunch of wiring that goes into those doors that needs to be undone. </p><p>To do this, get down into the footwell of the front row and pop off the black plastic panel next to the doors. </p><p><div type="image" title="2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon19" height="1334" width="2000" msid="76372036" hostid="261"></div></p><p>Under that, you'll see a wiring harness. Push up on the red piece to unlock the mechanism and then flip up the white piece. The wiring should be able to unplug after that.</p><p><div type="image" title="2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon21" height="1333" width="2000" msid="76372135" hostid="261"></div></p><p>Unloop the vinyl loop hooked to the door and tuck the whole thing into the cargo net for safekeeping. Pop the black plastic panel back into place.</p><p><div type="image" title="2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon20" height="1333" width="2000" msid="76372144" hostid="261"></div></p><p>Do the same for both sides.</p><h2><strong style="color: #000000;">5. Undo electrical harnesses on the back doors.</strong></h2><p>Similarly to the front doors, the back doors also have electrical harnesses that need to be undone.</p><p>At the base of the B-pillar, or in the rear passenger footwell, there's another black plastic panel that can be popped open.</p><p><strong><div type="image" title="2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon22" height="1334" width="2000" msid="76372149" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>You'll see all the wiring bunched into a gray clip. Pop that clip off.</p><p><div type="image" title="2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon25" height="1333" width="2000" msid="76372153" hostid="261"></div></p><p>Unloop the vinyl loop. Tuck all that into the door mesh pocket for safekeeping. Replace the plastic panel.</p><h2><strong style="color: #000000;">6. Unscrew the door anchor bolts. </strong></h2><p>Each door is held in place by one final anchor bolt. Using the long arm T40 torx bit, unscrew those and put the bolts aside for a second.</p><p><strong><div type="image" title="2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon24" height="1333" width="2000" msid="76372154" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>Now your doors can swing open freely! </p><p><strong><div type="image" title="2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon26" height="1333" width="2000" msid="76372156" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>We were not able to find a spot in the little compartment for those anchor bolts, however. </p><p><div type="image" title="2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon29" height="1333" width="2000" msid="76372159" hostid="261"></div></p><p>Time to lift the doors now! </p><p>Lift straight up because the doors are attached to the body via a hinge. Pull the pin on the door out of that hinge and you should be good to go.</p><p>Note that the front doors are a bit heavier than the back doors since they are larger and equipped with more electronics.</p><p>Find a place to store the doors.</p><p><strong><div type="image" title="2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon28" height="1333" width="2000" msid="76372163" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><h2><strong><div type="image" title="2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon30" height="1333" width="2000" msid="76372166" hostid="261"></div></strong></h2><h2><strong>7. Replace the door anchor bolts.</strong></h2><p>Since there isn't a readily available compartment for those door anchor bolts, we just screwed them back into the truck's frame. That way, we would know exactly where we'd left them. </p><p><div type="image" title="2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon31" height="1333" width="2000" msid="76372168" hostid="261"></div></p><h2><strong>8. Unscrew the rear half of the roof.</strong></h2><p>Okay, now it's time to remove the final piece: the remainder of the roof and the rear window.</p><p>Locate the two bolts holding the front half of the rear roof piece in place. Undo them and place them in the under-seat compartment. </p><p><strong><div type="image" title="2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon36" height="1333" width="2000" msid="76372171" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>Next, locate the two bolts holding the lower half in place. These are found at the base of the C-pillar, near where the rear passengers' outer biceps would be. They aren't covered up by plastic panels or anything, so they're pretty easily accessible. </p><p><div type="image" title="2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon32" height="1333" width="2000" msid="76372176" hostid="261"></div></p><p>Once you have those two bolts, store them in the compartment, too.</p><h2><strong>9. Fold the rear seats down.</strong></h2><p>You might need to fold down the headrests, too.</p><p><div type="image" title="2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon37" height="1333" width="2000" msid="76372179" hostid="261"></div></p><p>This gives you a bit more room to work and also access to the last four bolts you'll need to undo later.</p><p><div type="image" title="2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon38" height="1333" width="2000" msid="76372182" hostid="261"></div></p><h2><strong>10. Undo the electrical harness for the back window.</strong></h2><p>Near the driver's side rear passenger seat, where you unscrewed the roof bolt, is also an electrical harness that controls the rear window defroster. </p><p><strong><div type="image" title="2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon33" height="1333" width="2000" msid="76372184" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>Unclip that.</p><p><strong><div type="image" title="2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon34" height="1333" width="2000" msid="76372186" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><h2><strong>11. Remove the piece of black trim.</strong></h2><p>Right below the rear window is a piece of black trim held there by some Velcro. Remove the final roof panel.</strong></h2><p>This is where being taller would have come in handy. Even with my boyfriend's help, we still struggled with removing the rear window/roof panel. I wasn't quite tall enough to lift it clear from the truck's roof rails, so I had to climb into the cabin and very carefully slide it backward and away from the cabin. </p><p>Then I had to climb into the bed and keep sliding it. Eventually, we were able to get it off and huffed it over to where the other parts were huddled. It was very heavy and cumbersome and unwieldy, but we managed in the end. I wish it separated into two pieces instead of staying as a single one. Alas.</p><p><strong><div type="image" title="2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon42" height="1333" width="2000" msid="76372205" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>And that's it. You're done! The whole thing took us perhaps 20 minutes, but that was only because we'd never done it before. We watched <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hTIzFR5rfLQ">a YouTube video</a> beforehand, though, and found the whole process to be very straightforward. With practice, I've no doubt we could cut down on that time significantly. </p><p>Driving a car with no doors and no roof is a very fun experience. You can see the environment speeding by and you really do feel closer to everything else. When you park the car, you can just hop out. No door to open, no door to close. It's surprisingly easy to pull the doors off of Jeep's ultra-rugged Gladiator pickup truck — here's how I did it

Take a tour of the $62,000 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon, a rugged departure from every other midsize pickup truck

The most expensive version starts at $51,745.</li><li>Every trim features a Pentastar V6 with 285 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, and most feature the choice of either a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic transmission.</li><li>The Gladiator is really great at off-roading and hauling, but it's not the best highway cruiser.</li><li>My loaner came out to a total MSRP of $62,020.</li></ul><p>When the nice media fleet people kindly dropped the 2020 <keyword id="161559" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="jeep">Jeep</keyword> Gladiator off in front of my Brooklyn apartment, I had to laugh. Contrasted sharply against the gray concrete and the similarly gray cars typically parked here, the orange Jeep was garish, lurid, and rude. A punchline straight to the eyes.</p><p>But it wasn't just the color. There was presence. The Gladiator stands tall; it has beefy, all-terrain tires. Swaths of blocky, black trim. Squared-off fenders that stick out inches from the body. A design composed of straight lines and right angles.</p><p><div type="image" title="2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon107" height="1333" width="2000" msid="76323132" hostid="261"></div>The good news is that the Jeep Gladiator's look will likely age well; straight lines and 90-degree angles don't exactly go out of fashion.</p><h2>The 2020 Jeep Gladiator: Jeep went wild on the optional features </h2><p>The Gladiator is Jeep's take on the highly lucrative midsize pickup truck market. Designed to compete against the likes of the Honda Ridgeline, Chevrolet Colorado, GMC Canyon, Nissan Frontier, Ford Ranger, and Toyota Tacoma, the Gladiator offers four-wheel drive, a five-foot bed, off-roading prowess, and Jeepish looks. </p><p>In fact, if you were to eye it straight in the familiar seven-slot grille-face, you wouldn't be able to tell there's a pickup bed attached back there at all. From the side, too, its front half is a Jeep Wrangler. Its back half is a rectangle. </p><p><div type="image" title="2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon96" height="3000" width="2000" msid="76323134" hostid="261"></div></p><p>Jeep offers <a href="https://www.jeep.com/bmo.gladiator.2020.html#/models/2020/gladiator?app=bmo&amp;vehicle=gladiator&amp;year=2020ear=2020">seven trims</a> for the 2020 Gladiator. The cheapest is the Sport, which starts at $33,545. The most expensive is the High Altitude, which starts at $51,745. For the purpose of my review, Jeep loaned me the Gladiator Rubicon — tied for the second most expensive in the lineup.</p><p><div type="image" title="Jeep Gladiator trims" height="769" width="1400" msid="76323138" hostid="261"></div></p><p>Rubicon Gladiators come with trimmings like an available forward-facing off-road camera, LED headlights and fog lights, protective cab and cargo-bed rock rails, two-piece body-color fender flares with black insert, 33-inch tires as standard, and a fancy Rock-Trac 4x4 system, good for scaling over obstacles while traversing off road. </p><p>My loaner was also outfitted with seemingly all of these options: leather-trimmed bucket seats ($1,495), a premium audio system ($1,695), a roll-up <a href="https://shop.advanceautoparts.com/r/advice/car-truck-mods/tonneau-cover">tonneau cover</a> ($595), adaptive cruise control ($795), an eight-speed automatic 850RE transmission ($2,000), a body-color three-piece hardtop ($2,295), a winch-capable steel front bumper ($795), 17-inch polished black aluminum wheels ($995), and the forward-facing trail camera ($595).</p><p><div type="image" title="2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon88" height="1333" width="2000" msid="76323140" hostid="261"></div></p><p>In all, the total price of the vehicle came to a whopping $62,020. </p><p>Show me the person who would realistically option their Gladiator in such a fashion, because I cannot imagine them. $62,000 is a lot of money for a midsize pickup! The options Jeep gave its press car were appreciated, but they didn't really add or detract from the truck's primary job, which is being a truck.</p><h2>Details and safety ratings: Built for off-roading, but not for fuel economy</h2><p>Powered by a 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine, the Gladiator makes a claimed 285 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed manual comes standard, but an eight-speed automatic is optional.</p><p><div type="image" title="2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon99" height="1333" width="2000" msid="76323144" hostid="261"></div></p><p>The engine is designed to produce low-range torque — meaning that it's best-suited for low speeds and doing low-speed things, such as off-roading, driving during harsh conditions, hauling cargo, or towing something. </p><p>The Gladiator is based on the same platform as the current Wrangler and utilizes a body-on-frame design: the vehicle's frame and body are two different pieces. True, it means the Gladiator is perhaps heavier and less fuel-efficient than something with a unibody construction — where frame and body are combined into one piece. </p><p>But it also means that the Gladiator was designed from the ground up as something intended for off-roading and transporting heavy loads. Body-on-frame vehicles are generally cheaper to build, too.</p><p><div type="image" title="2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon93" height="1333" width="2000" msid="76323148" hostid="261"></div></p><p>Rubicon-trim Gladiators also wear a Jeep Trail Rated badge, which means that they have added ground clearance, big tires, 30 inches of water fording ability, and up to 7,650 pounds of towing capacity. </p><p>Although the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has not yet given the 2020 Gladiator an overall safety rating, it did <a href="https://www.nhtsa.gov/vehicle/2020/JEEP/GLADIATOR/PU%25252FCC/4WD#safety-ratings-frontal" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">award the truck</a> four out of five stars for overall frontal crashworthiness. The front driver side earned four stars, while the front passenger side earned five stars. Side crash hasn't been rated, but rollover scored a mere three stars. The agency reported a 26.7% risk of rollover.</p><h2>What stands out: The thing is a god in its off-roading element</h2><p>Despite its fearsome and rugged looks, the Gladiator is actually a comfortable place to spend a few hours during long commutes. There's abundant room in the cabin for four passengers, and even the rear seats are roomy. Plenty of headroom and legroom. </p><p><div type="image" title="2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon97" height="3000" width="2000" msid="76323152" hostid="261"></div></p><p>The bed, for us, hauled two suitcases, two backpacks, bags of groceries, electronics, a purse, a laundry hamper, and two large director's chairs. Jeep provided a tonneau cover and that came in very handy, as it kept all of our stuff dry. </p><p>Some light off-roading later, it was clear to me the big Jeep was in its element. Trundling up and down grassy knolls and through the woods, the Gladiator happily bumped, tilted, and thumped across the uneven terrain, always solidly planted. </p><p>The off-roading suspension drank in the turbulence — not so much soaking it up completely so that you, the driver, would be numb to it — but rather in a way that was pliable and inspired confidence. </p><p><div type="image" title="2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon115" height="1333" width="2000" msid="76323155" hostid="261"></div></p><p>Driving the truck across this sort of environment was akin to sitting astride a very sure-footed, four-legged animal. Sure, I wouldn't recommend doing it with an open mug of coffee in your hand, but all four wheels consistently felt they were working together, cohesively, under me. </p><p>That feeling was a direct result of the truck's four-wheel drive and locking differentials — which allows both wheels on an axle to travel at the same speed so when one wheel loses traction, both keep spinning and hopefully will pull you out of the low-traction situation.</p><p>The 11.1 inches of ground clearance also meant that the Gladiator could crawl over a great number of things in its way. The trunk of a fallen birch tree, for example, would have torn off the front bumper of (and caused significant damage to) your average crossover or SUV, but the truck stepped right over the obstacle and thought nothing of it. </p><p><div type="image" title="2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon109" height="3000" width="2000" msid="76323160" hostid="261"></div></p><h2>What falls short: Not a happy highway camper </h2><p>The saying, "jack of all trades, master of none" unfortunately rings extremely true here. As stoked as the Gladiator clearly is while splashing about in muck or sand, it doesn't do the highway cruising with nearly as much gumption. </p><p>Don't get me wrong; the Gladiator is a very fine around-town commuter, great for running errands. You sit high and can easily see around and over other cars — a very big deal for a short person such as myself. </p><p>But once you hit the highway, that confidence and sure-footedness from the low-speed off-roading all but evaporates. The bouncy suspension, so well optimized for uncivilized terrain, feeds some unwelcome wobbliness into the cabin. The big, all-terrain tires hum loudly at high speed. </p><p><div type="image" title="Jeep Gladiator4" height="1333" width="2000" msid="76323163" hostid="261"></div></p><p>The Jeep also didn't like maintaining highway speeds. Other cars merely require periodic throttle inputs to keep up consistent speeds of about 65 mph or so; pretty effortless and thoughtless stuff. The Gladiator felt as though it was constantly driving through molasses that kept dragging its speed down. Eventually, I gave up trying to hold to a constant speed by myself and instead switched on the cruise control. </p><p>And thanks to the approximate aerodynamics of a brick, I observed the Gladiator to return an average of 19.2 mpg during the course of my loan, which included city driving, highway driving, and around-town errand running. On the truck's window sticker, the EPA gives the Gladiator a fuel economy and greenhouse-gas rating of three out of 10. </p><p>Hardware wise, I do wish the wing mirrors stuck out a bit further. The Gladiator is a long vehicle and it isn't always easy to see where it ends. It has thick C-pillars, which result in blind spots during over-the-shoulder glances. Wing mirrors with a wider field of view would have been helpful there. </p><p><div type="image" title="2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon142" height="1333" width="2000" msid="76323167" hostid="261"></div></p><h2><strong>How the Gladiator compares to its competitors: A bit more expensive, and a bit more uncouth </strong></h2><p>Compared to other midsize <keyword id="47193" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="trucks">trucks</keyword> available to US buyers, the Gladiator's base price is high. If your sole buying criteria is for a midsize truck, then the Ford Ranger would be a fine thing to bring home. The Ranger starts at $24,410, and its 4WD version gets an EPA-estimated 20 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway. The Gladiator with the automatic transmission gets an EPA-estimated 17 mpg in the city and 22 mpg on the highway.</p><p>Certainly, other trucks are likely more comfortable and civilized than the rather uncouth Gladiator. That's the new truck trend these days: SUV-like quality and comfort, but with a bed for all your stuff. </p><p>But if you want a truck where you can pull its doors off, a truck that revels in getting muddy from playtime and going where there are no roads, the Gladiator is for you. It'll do the suburban life just fine, but you can tell its heart is elsewhere.</p><p><div type="image" title="Jeep Gladiator2" height="1333" width="2000" msid="76323171" hostid="261"></div></p><h2><strong>Our impressions: Maybe if I didn't live in Brooklyn</strong></h2><p>Perhaps this is a uniquely Me Problem, but I actually felt too short for the Gladiator. At five-foot-three, I was disappointed by the truck's lack of running boards (don't worry, you can get them as an option). It took several days for me to get used to the massive step up I had to take to climb into the cabin. Twice, while exiting backward, I misjudged the distance from the truck to the ground and nearly fell out of it.</p><p>Thankfully, the Jeep has handles at the A- and B-pillars that passengers can use to pull themselves up, but this crutch falls apart when you approach the truck with items in both hands, such as a phone, car keys, and a beverage. Even if you manage to open the door with one finger, you'll still need to first reach into the truck to put everything down before grabbing the handle to hoist yourself in. It's an extra step. </p><p>The lofty ground clearance — so great for fallen trees and the like! — also means that the bed is quite high up. Maybe you're tall enough that you can just reach in from the side to retrieve your items. To that end, I am ecstatic for you.<em> I</em> had to physically climb into the bed and push everything toward the tailgate before I could remove it. </p><p><div type="image" title="2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon129" height="1333" width="2000" msid="76323174" hostid="261"></div></p><p>Despite these small inconveniences, though, I liked the Gladiator. I appreciate its existence. I respect its off-road capabilities and how stable it always felt. If I lived in the desert, preferably somewhere in the American Southwest, I'd definitely consider one. But as it currently stands, I live in Brooklyn, and in Brooklyn, the Jeep pickup truck simply feels too big to be allowed. </p><p>That being said, I have a hard time figuring out who the Gladiator is actually for. You'd think, given the popularity of midsize trucks, they would sell more quickly than Jeep could make them. It certainly seems like the automaker was betting on this very thing to happen. But it didn't.</p><p>The Gladiator went on sale during the second half of 2019. Yet, the Compass, Wrangler, Cherokee, Grand Cherokee, and even the Renegade <a href="https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/fca-us-reports-fourth-quarter-and-full-year-2019-sales-300980866.html">sold better than it did in Q4</a>. I remember automotive readers being <em>very excited</em> about the Gladiator. But it doesn't seem like many people bought them.</p><p><div type="image" title="2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon86" height="3000" width="2000" msid="76323177" hostid="261"></div></p><p>Perhaps it's because the Gladiator markets itself a little bit too much to the niche truck buyer. The higher price tag certainly suggests that. This truck appeals to the buyer who probably wouldn't use their Gladiator as a work tool, but rather as a recreational vehicle. A playtime buggy. A toy. </p><p>Look no further than <a href="https://media.fcanorthamerica.com/image-gallery.do?method=view&amp;imageGalleryId=1027&amp;mid=1015mid=1015">Jeep's own press images of the truck</a>, which feature it prominently at play (or doing play-adjacent activities): fording creeks, going to the beach, rock crawling, hauling a boat, and transporting kayaks and dirt bikes. This is the truck you load up with camping equipment to get to that far-out campsite that's inaccessible to everything except lifted Jeeps and donkeys. </p><p>It's not a bad territory to occupy, even if a little niche. </p><p><div type="image" title="2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon102" height="1333" width="2000" msid="76323179" hostid="261"></div></p>

This<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/inflatable-camping-tent-mounted-roof-rack-compact-car-camper-2020-4"> rooftop tent can also be seen as a non-concept product with other automakers and tent-makers</a> that have used it to turn vehicles into campsites on wheels.</p><div type="image" title="Jeep Gladiator Farout Concept" height="1706" width="2274" msid="77746277" hostid="261"></div><p>The exterior of the Farout is painted a blue-grey "Earl" color with green-yellow detailing on parts of the body, including the hood and shocks. This blue-ish theme then extends to the interior, which has "smoke blue" leather that contrasts its wood accents, orange stitches, and plaid flannel seat inserts.</p><p>The vehicle also has the typical RV amenities, such as ambient lighting, a refrigerator, a stove, storage racks, and a seat and table for dining on the road. And to complete the "overlanding" theme with its off-road capabilities, the Farout concept has a two-inch lift kit, 17-inch rims, mud-terrain tires, and a steel bumper with a winch.</p><p>There's also a roof rack to help carry more gear, and rock rails to protect the front and rear while driving through rougher terrains.</p><p>This overlanding tiny home on wheels is made possible by the 2021 Gladiator EcoDiesel, which has 260 horsepower and 442 foot-pounds of torque. The EcoDiesel engine that's prominently showcased in this concept is also available on other Jeep models, such as the Overland and Rubicon.</p>

And it's packed with features, which shouldn't be surprising since the Hummer <keyword id="186291" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="EV">EV</keyword> is massive. But how does GMC's supertruck stack up against <keyword id="107096" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Tesla">Tesla</keyword>'s <keyword id="8303602" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="cybertruck">Cybertruck</keyword>?</p><p>Both EVs are engineered to go off-road. The Hummer EV is specially equipped for this task. A host of new features give drivers more control in tough situations. It has four-wheel steering, it can climb stairs and verticals up to 18 inches tall, has a unique CrabWalk feature that drives the car diagonally, and cameras underneath the truck help drivers avoid obstacles. </p><p>Both EVs have huge 35-inch all-terrain tires, adaptive suspensions that can be adjusted for ground clearance, and make use of four-wheel drive. They're massive and will more than likely handle like a Ford Raptor or Jeep Gladiator Rubicon. We'll just have to wait until both <keyword id="20632" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Cars">cars</keyword> are out to test them for ourselves.</p><p>As far as autonomous driving goes, the Cybertruck comes equipped with Autopilot. The Hummer EV will come with a three-year subscription to Super Cruise, GM's own autonomous-driving technology. Though Super Cruise is only hands-free on compatible roads.</p><p>The new Hummer uses three electric motors to produce 1,000 horsepower and 11,500 pound-feet of torque. While Tesla hasn't released the Cybertruck's specs, Motor Trend estimates it's around 690 horsepower and 824 pound-feet of torque. Both cars boast a zero to 60 in about three seconds. But you'll need to be in Hummer's Watts to Freedom mode, similar to Ludicrous mode in a Tesla.</p><p>Range is one of the most important metrics of any EV. GMC estimated the Hummer EV will do 350-plus miles on a full charge. That's on the high end for an EV but actually fares on the lower end compared to other electric trucks. The R1T, the Ford-backed EV, and Cybertruck boast 400 and 500 miles respectively, though both offer smaller battery packs that produce about half that. The Hummer EV will be the first car compatible with 350-kilowatt public chargers, which will allow it to charge 100 miles in 10 minutes.</p><p>The price difference between the two is pretty substantial, which is expected. The base Hummer EV will start at $79,995, compared to the Cybertruck starting at $39,900. But don't expect to see either of those models on the street anytime soon. The Hummer EV Edition 1 will have a starting price of $112,595 and should be available in fall 2021.</p>
