With the states divided on political lines over holding the NEET-JEE exams, BJP-ruled Madhya Pradesh is ready with a plan to go all out to conduct the exams on schedule in September. As a first step the government has offered to double the number of centres for the NEET test and has banned frisking of candidates. They will be expected to go through a metal detector. This year the expected number of NEET candidates is going to be 58,860 and the state plans to have 144 centres as compared to last year's 84 centres for 54,445 candidates. Sources said Bhopal will have 35 centres for about 18,000 candidates. There were 15 centres last year for 12,000 candidates. Among the steps taken for the candidates' safety, alternate seats have been arranged for the JEE (Main) and NEET examinees. There will be 12 NEET candidates in each room. Students will go through thermal scanning. There will be separate entry and exit gates. Document verification will be done in two rooms in batches of 15 candidates each. Face masks will be mandatory. Sanitisation of the centres will be carried out before each test. Isolation wards will be prepared for students with high fever. Facility for disposal of gloves and masks for both the candidates and invigilators will be arranged. Only masks, gloves, hand sanitisers, water in transparent bottles, admit cards and ID cards will be allowed in the centres. The Congress-led opposition is opposing the holding of the exams. Former state Education Minister Jitu Patwari on Wednesday wrote to the Chief Minister to cancel the exams in view of the pandemic. "Like the rest of the world our country is also facing the pandemic. Covid had started infecting the state when you took charge in March. You failed to control it," wrote Patwari. "Under these circumstances, I request you not to permit conducting of the JEE/NEET examination," he said. He asked the state government to write to the Centre to cancel the exams. A senior official in the Education Department said the postponement of the examinations would hamper the academic calendar and cost thousands of students a precious year. "Shifting of the examination would call for a massive logistical exercise. Thousands of centres are to be contacted again for their availability. Also availability of supervisors and invigilators, movement of tonnes of materials and equipment like jammers and CCTV cameras are involved. "It takes almost three months to prepare for the examination for the administration. For the students, it takes even longer to prepare for the tests. If it is postponed again, it will ruin an academic year," he said. Madhya Pradesh is ready to push ahead with NEET-JEE exams

It aims to employ more than 1000 people by the end of this year, the company said in a statement on Monday. The edtech startup announced the expansion of its workforce by four times to fuel the growth of the organisation. The e-learning platform — which provides specialised coaching classes for entrance exams like Joint Entrance Examination (<keyword id="6392660" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="JEE">JEE</keyword>), All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS), National Talent Search Examination (<keyword id="75234" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="NTSE">NTSE</keyword>), National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (<keyword id="6361994" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="NEET">NEET</keyword>) and Olympiads — will be hiring from Tier-2 and beyond locations across various fields like marketing, sales and technical roles. Six Ministers of opposition-ruled states moved the <keyword id="6354977" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Supreme-Court">Supreme Court</keyword> on Friday seeking review of its order permitting the Centre to conduct NEET and JEE entrance exams this year amid the persisting COVID-19 pandemic. The review plea has been filed by ministers from West Bengal (Moloy Ghatak), Jharkhand (Rameshwar Oraon), Rajasthan (Raghu Sharma), Chhattisgarh (Amarjeet Bhagat), Punjab (B S Sidhu) and Maharashtra (Uday Ravindra Sawant). The plea has been filed through advocate Sunil Fernandes. On Aug 17, the top court had refused to interfere with the conduct of medical and engineering entrance exams -- NEET and JEE scheduled to take place in September saying that life must go on and students can't lose a precious year due to the pandemic. The apex court had dismissed a plea by one Sayantan Biswas seeking direction to National Testing Agency (NTA), which conducts both the NEET and <keyword id="1629686" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="JEE-Exams">JEE exams</keyword>, to postpone them and said that there was absolutely" no merit in the plea.

Aditya Thackeray, who heads the youth wing Yuva Sena, along with ruling Nationalist Congress Party leaders, have gone a step ahead and demanded that the entire academic year be postponed this year. They also rooted for starting the next academic session from January 2021, instead of the regular June/July 2020 as an added precaution during the pandemic. For non-professional courses, most academic assessment has been carried out and the final exams would not amount to more than 10 per cent of the assessment and hence Aditya Thackeray urged passing students based on a marking system devised by the universities. The Congress has planned nationwide protests in support of its demands, while several student organisations from the state have also sought postponement of the JEE-NEET exams, to be conducted by National Testing Agency (NTA). Preparing in full swing, the NTA has already asked states to provide facilities to students to enable them reach exam centres in time, besides other requirements for the smooth conduct of the examinations. JEE-NEET 2020: Maharashtra government wants Centre to defer the exams

The initiative is coordinated by a group of concerned academicians. "We the members of academic fraternity fully support the government decision to conduct <keyword id="6392660" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="JEE">JEE</keyword> and <keyword id="6361994" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="NEET">NEET</keyword> exams," they wrote. Hitting out at the naysayers, they wrote: "The dreams and future of our youth and students cannot be compromised at any cost. However, some are trying to play with the future of our students simply to propel their own political agenda and oppose the government. "We hope and strongly believe that under your able leadership, the central government will successfully conduct the JEE and NEET exams taking full precautions to ensure that the future of students is taken care of and the academic calendar for 2020-21 is rolled out." They say that they "wholeheartedly welcome" the government's move, while citing the Supreme Court dismissing a petition for postponement of these exams saying that any further delay in conducting the tests would result in waste of precious year for students. They wrote that "Youth and students are the future of the nation but in the wake of Covid-19 pandemic, clouds of uncertainty have gathered over their careers too". There are a lot of apprehensions about admissions and classes which, they say, need to be resolved at the earliest. Prof. C.B. "They (Centre) are saying protocols will be followed. Following the same protocols that the Centre wants 28 lakh students to follow, lakhs of Indians have tested positive," Sisodia told reporters. He said the Union Home Minister tested positive for coronavirus despite staying in a very safe environment, and that many other leaders including Delhi Health Minister have also contracted the contagious disease. "So many top leaders have got infected with COVID-19 despite taking all precautions. So, how can we take the risk of sending 28 lakh students to exam centre and be assured that they will not be infected," Sisodia asked. He said the Central government should immediately postpone the exams and work on "alternative methods" of admission. "I appeal to the government to not be adamant on admission only through these exams. We are not at all saying that the year be declared as a zero academic year. We are not in favour of admitting students just like that as we will need quality doctors and engineers but banking upon only a three hour exam and expecting it to work like a magic wand in identifying talent, is a very conservative thought," he added. The Joint Entrance Examination (Main) and the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET-UG) will be conducted in September as scheduled, the Ministry of Education officials had said on Tuesday, amid a growing chorus for postponing the crucial tests in view of the COVID-19 pandemic. On Tuesday, Swedish teen climate change campaigner Greta Thunberg also threw her weight behind postponing the exams in view of the pandemic. "It's deeply unfair that students of India are asked to sit national exams during the Covid-19 pandemic and while millions have also been impacted by the extreme floods. I stand with their call to #PostponeJEE_NEETinCOVID," she said in a tweet. Several opposition leaders in India including Congress' Rahul Gandhi, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, her Odisha counterpart Naveen Patnaik and DMK President MK Stalin have demanded the exams be postponed. Sisodia had on Saturday also appealed the Centre to postpone or cancel the exams. The Supreme Court had last week dismissed a plea seeking postponement of the two exams amid a spurt in the number of COVID-19 cases, saying a "precious" academic year of students "cannot be wasted" and life has to go on. While a total of 9.53 lakh candidates have registered for JEE-Mains, 15.97 lakh students have registered for NEET. Increasing the number of examination centres, alternate seating plan, fewer candidates per room and staggered entry and exit are among the steps the National Testing Agency will take for safely conducting NEET and JEE in September. NEET and JEE exams can expose 28 lakh students to COVID-19, says Delhi CM Manish Sisodia

The counsel argued that many students abroad intended to sit in both the NEET and Joint Entrance Exams (<keyword id="6392660" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="JEE">JEE</keyword>).</li></ul> The Supreme Court on Monday declined a plea for directions to the Centre and the National Testing Agency (NTA) for setting up <keyword id="827556" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="NEET-exam">NEET exam</keyword> centres abroad for the benefit of students in foreign countries in the backdrop of the <keyword id="1754604" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="coronavirus">coronavirus</keyword> pandemic. A bench comprising Justices L Nageswara Rao, Hemant Gupta, and S Ravindra Bhat asked Solicitor General Tushar Mehta to discuss with ministries concerned whether students who wish to visit India to sit in the NEET exam could be accommodated on the Vande Bharat Mission flights. The court also asked Mehta to explore the possibility that aspirants based out of the Middle East countries were permitted to board such flights. The bench also noted that the incoming students are permitted to approach the state governments concerned for relaxations in quarantine periods. According to the rules, people arriving in India from abroad are required to undergo 14-day quarantine in the interest of public health. The Supreme Court orally directed Mehta to inform the ministries concerned that these students may be allowed to come back to take the exam. Mehta contended before the bench that the issue could be taken care of, subject to quarantine requirements and that they establish that they were coming for the exam. The top court told the petitioners' counsel that he could ask his clients to plan their return in the backdrop of quarantine requirements. The counsel argued that many students abroad intended to sit in both the NEET and Joint Entrance Exams (JEE). The petitioners said that only 6-day gap between JEE (September 1-6) and NEET exam (September 13) was also an issue. The petitioners had moved the apex court to challenge a Kerala High Court order to dismiss their plea to set up examination centres abroad, or postpone the exams due to the pandemic. The Centre has already decided not to postpone the NEET and JEE exams.
