In September 2021, it was <a href="https://twitter.com/TheBoysTV/status/1442626010785230848">given a series order</a>. </p><p>Here's what we know about the college-centric show, called "Gen V," so far. </p><h2>The series will focus on a Vought-run college</h2><div type="image" title="Jaz Sinclair as Marie in the first trailer for &quot;Gen V.&quot;" height="792" width="1056" msid="96011710" hostid="261" sizebytes="54228"></div><p>The spin-off, helmed by "Agent Carter" showrunners Michele Fazekas and Tara Butters, will explore "the lives of hormonal, competitive supes as they put their physical, sexual, and moral boundaries to the test, competing for the best contracts in the best cities. Part college show, part 'Hunger Games' — with all the heart, satire and raunch of 'The Boys,'" <a href="https://variety.com/2020/tv/news/the-boys-spinoff-amazon-1234782755/">Variety</a> reported.</p><p>"The Boys" showrunner Eric Kripke told <a href="https://ew.com/tv/the-boys-season-2-finale-digital-cover/">Entertainment Weekly</a> that the idea for the spin-off came about organically in January 2020, especially after noticing that there aren't college shows with this premise.</p><p>"It's a Vought-owned college where young kids with powers are trained as to how to be proper superheroes, all leading to an NBA-style draft at the end of the year," Kripke told <a href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/superheroes-are-inherently-maga-the-boys-boss-on-his-zeitgeisty-hit-4077486/">The Hollywood Reporter</a>. "It's sort of like a college sports show meets 'Fame,' because they also have to go to acting classes and marketing classes. It's going to be a very character-driven, hopefully incredibly realistic, college show."</p><div type="image" title="Chance Perdomo in the first trailer for &quot;Gen V.&quot;" height="793" width="1057" msid="96011711" hostid="261" sizebytes="11776"></div><p>Cast member Patrick Schwarzenegger described the series as "'Euphoria' meets superheroes" in an interview with <a href="https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/patrick-schwarzenegger-the-staircase/id1142302785?i=1000566354308" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Marc Malkin's "Just for Variety" podcast.</a></p><p>Kripke told <a href="https://variety.com/2022/tv/features/the-boys-spinoff-release-date-season-4-mcu-1235306102/">Variety</a> that the comparison is accurate to a degree.</p><p>"It's about kids who are complicated psychologically getting into trouble," he said. "So in that way, it's like 'Euphoria.' I don't know if it's quite as dark, frankly, as 'Euphoria.'"</p><p>"I think it will be surprising, the amount of emotion that is in that story, with all the usual 'Boys<em>' </em>swagger," Kripke told <a href="https://deadline.com/2021/07/the-boys-creator-eric-kripke-emmy-noms-season-3-spinoff-amazon-prime-video-1234791974/">Deadline</a> in July 2021.</p><h2>The cast will include rising actors, like 'Chilling Adventures of Sabrina' star <keyword id="12198339" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="jaz-sinclair" source="Orion">Jaz Sinclair</keyword></h2><div type="image" title="Jaz Sinclair as Marie in the first trailer for &quot;Gen V.&quot;" height="792" width="1057" msid="96011712" hostid="261" sizebytes="16010"></div><p>Sinclair, who portrayed Roz in "<a href="https://www.insider.com/category/chilling-adventures-of-sabrina">CAOS</a>," was <a href="https://variety.com/2021/tv/news/the-boys-spinoff-amazon-lizze-broadway-1234928426/">one of the first cast members announced</a> along with "The Rookie" actress Lizze Broadway. Sinclair and Broadway will star as supes named Marie and Emma, respectively. "Teenage Bounty Hunters" star <a href="https://variety.com/2021/tv/news/the-boys-spinoff-adds-three-cast-1234934919/">Maddie Phillips</a> will also play a supe. </p><p>The cast has <a href="https://deadline.com/2022/03/aimee-carrero-shane-paul-mcghie-exit-the-boys-spinoff-carrero-joins-the-consultant-prime-video-1234975461/">undergone some changes </a><a href="https://deadline.com/2022/04/reina-hardesty-exit-the-boys-spinoff-series-1235009714/">in the lineup</a><a href="https://deadline.com/2022/03/aimee-carrero-shane-paul-mcghie-exit-the-boys-spinoff-carrero-joins-the-consultant-prime-video-1234975461/"></a> since initial reports, with new actors being added to the series.  </p><p>"CAOS" alum Chace Perdomo <a href="https://deadline.com/2022/03/chance-perdomo-the-boys-spinoff-recasting-1234980324/">replaced</a> Shane Paul McGhie in March 2022 following his departure. </p><p>In May 2022, <a href="https://deadline.com/2022/05/london-thor-the-boys-spinoff-derek-luh-asa-germann-shelley-conn-1235020015/">Deadline</a> reported additional castings: London Thor ("Shameless"), Derek Luh ("Shining Vale"), Shelley Conn ("Bridgerton"), and Asa Germann.</p><p>Patrick Schwarzenegger ("The Staircase") as <a href="https://variety.com/2022/streaming/columns/the-staircase-patrick-schwarzenegger-the-boys-spinoff-1235292860/">Golden Boy</a>, Sean Patrick Thomas ("The Tragedy of Macbeth"), and Marco Pigossi ("Invisible City") <a href="https://deadline.com/2022/05/patrick-schwarzenegger-sean-patrick-thomas-marco-pigossi-the-boys-spinoff-1235021404/">joined the cast</a> shortly after. </p><h2>Season 3 of 'The Boys' included Easter eggs teasing the spin-off </h2><div type="image" title="An arrow pointing to a computer screen in season three, episode two of &quot;The Boys.&quot;" height="1166" width="2878" msid="92837938" hostid="261"></div><p>When Hughie Campbell (Jack Quaid) visited the Red River Institute in episode two, he looked at a computer screen showing supe kids who are part of the group home. A photo of Sinclair's character, 17-year-old Marie M. could be seen briefly as Hughie scrolled. </p><p>Another, less obvious, nod to the upcoming spin-off was included in episode five. During a conversation with A-Train (Jessie T. Usher), the supe named Blue Hawk (Nick Wechsler) said they both trained with Coach Brink and were taught to "dominate totally."</p><p>Kripke confirmed to <a href="https://variety.com/2022/tv/features/the-boys-spinoff-release-date-season-4-mcu-1235306102/">Variety</a> that that was a nod to the spin-off.</p><p>"Both of those guys graduated from Good Oak, which is the name of the school, and Brink is a reference to the big superhero trainer at that school who is a character in the spinoff," he said. </p><h2>There will be crossover between 'The Boys' and the spin-off</h2><div type="image" title="From left: Jack Quaid, Karl Urban, Tomer Capone, Karen Fukuhara, and Laz Alonso for season three of &quot;The Boys.&quot;" height="1592" width="2123" msid="92837941" hostid="261"></div><p>Prior to the unveiling of the show's official name, the spin-off title was referred to as "Varsity."</p><p>"There's definitely crossover, and we're doing our best to design a universe that sees some of the issues and storylines in season three [of 'The Boys'] hand off to the first season in 'Varsity,'" Kripke told <a href="https://deadline.com/2022/07/the-boys-spoilers-season-3-donald-trump-alexandria-ocasio-cortez-eric-kripke-interiew-black-noir-1235060686/">Deadline</a>.</p><p>He continued: "There's a presidential campaign happening in the background of that season, and there are certain things that are happening at that school that are both in reaction to season three of 'The Boys.' There's Soldier Boy, et cetera, but also some new storylines that are happening in that season of the spin-off that we have to pick up and take into season four of the show."</p><p>Kripke also told <a href="https://www.rollingstone.com/tv/tv-features/boys-penis-homelander-trump-billy-joel-season-3-1369258/">Rolling Stone</a> that familiar faces from 'The Boys" will pop up in the spin-off. </p><p>"Without spoiling anything, I think there will be several very, very cool cameos," he teased, "because it's a Vought-run college, so crossover with Vought characters is inevitable, really."</p><h2>The title, 'Gen V,' was announced in July 2022</h2><div type="image" title="Lizze Broadway as Emma in the first trailer for &quot;Gen V.&quot;" height="788" width="1054" msid="96011713" hostid="261" sizebytes="37068"></div><p>The official Twitter account for "The Boys" posted a <a href="https://twitter.com/TheBoysTV/status/1547959303872491520">video</a> and <a href="https://twitter.com/TheBoysTV/status/1547991771187068932">photos</a> introducing followers to the cast of the spin-off.</p><p>"It's got everything 'The Boys' has: the intensity, the grit, the humor," Germann said<em>.</em></p><p>"It's fucked up. You're gonna like it," Perdomo added.</p><h2>'Gen V' will debut sometime in 2023</h2><p>In July 2022, Kripke told <a href="https://variety.com/2022/tv/features/the-boys-spinoff-release-date-season-4-mcu-1235306102/">Variety</a> that the spin-off was "almost halfway through shooting." The rollout plan for the show is for episodes to be released when "The Boys" isn't currently airing. </p><p>"I think the overall goal is to start leapfrogging them, where, a series of months after 'The Boys' wraps, season one of the spin-off will drop," Kripke told the publication. "And then a series of months after that, season four of 'The Boys' will drop."</p><p>The <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aDyDg04x1W0">first trailer</a> for "Gen V" dropped in December 2022 at Comic-Con Experience (CCXP) in São Paulo, Brazil, confirming the show's release in 2023 and teasing guest appearances from cast members of "The Boys."</p><p>The official synopsis reads: "Welcome to Godolkin University, a safe space for you to thrive. This is your first look at 'Gen V,' 'The Boys' college spin-off series arriving on Prime Video in 2023. "It was pretty romantic."</p><p>Andre, immediately defensive, tries to fact-check Soldier Boy by saying that Cate didn't like the aforementioned boy band. </p><p>"You're Cate's new fuckboy," Soldier Boy replies. "She really loves you."</p><p>"But whatever. Boys, they come and go. But she always comes back to a little pillow talk," he adds, winking. </p><p>The students also call out Soldier Boy for being "radicalized by the Russians," referring to the events of <a href="https://www.insider.com/the-boys-season-3-what-happened-to-characters-2022-7">season three of "The Boys."</a> However, he denies the association, saying that he's "red-blooded."<strong><br /></strong></p><p>"But not Commie red," he clarifies. He explains that Cate's blood vessels are bursting in real time and if she dies, all of them do, too. </p><p>"If you really want to live, then the single most important thing I can tell you…" Soldier Boy begins, before he's abruptly cut off by his own body combusting as another of Cate's blood vessels pops. </p><p>Even though the imaginary version of Soldier Boy that lives in Cate's mind gets killed, the real supe is alive in the "Boys" universe.</p><p>Ackles joined the show as Soldier Boy during season three, when it was revealed that he was captured by Russians and subjected to painful experiments and dangerous levels of radiation.</p><p>During the <a href="https://www.insider.com/the-boys-season-3-finale-postmortem-showrunner-eric-kripke-interview-2022-7">season three finale</a>'s big fight scene, Queen Maeve (Dominique McElligott) jumped out the window of Vought Tower with Soldier Boy to prevent everyone from being harmed by his powerful blast.</p><p>Soldier Boy didn't die though. He was last seen sedated and put back in an ice chamber, overseen by Grace Mallory (Laila Robins). <ul class="summary-list"><li>Warning: There are major spoilers ahead for season one of Prime Video's "Gen V."</li><li>Showrunner Michele Fazekas spoke to Insider about the finale's cliffhanger and cameo from Homelander.</li></ul><p>In its freshman season, "<a href="https://www.insider.com/the-boys-season-4-details-information-what-we-know-2022-7">The Boys</a>" spin-off "<a href="https://www.insider.com/the-boys-gen-v-details-references-breakdown-season-1-2023-9">Gen V</a>" has proven that, like its parent show, it has just as much guts and willingness to go to unexpected (often gory) places.</p><p>Season one of "Gen V" concluded on Thursday night, with Cate Dunlap (Maddie Phillips) and Sam Riordan (Asa Germann) forming an alliance and freeing captives from the secret Vought facility located below Godolkin University, known as The Woods.</p><p>The rogue supes unleashed mayhem on campus — set to Rihanna's "Desperado" — until an appearance from the leader of The Seven put an end to the massacre. The episode's cliffhanger, which showed Marie Moreau (Jaz Sinclair), Andre Anderson (Chance Perdomo), Emma Meyer (Lizze Broadway), and Jordan Li (London Thor) in what appeared to be a Vought-run room, teased what's to come when "Gen V" returns for season two.</p><p>Showrunner and executive producer Michele Fazekas sat down virtually with <a href="https://www.insider.com/">Insider</a> Friday to answer burning questions about the finale's most notable moments, from that <a href="https://www.insider.com/the-boys-stars-gen-v-cameos-appearances-photos-2023-9">Homelander</a> (Antony Starr) appearance to Marie and Emma tapping into their powers in new ways. </p><div type="image" title="London Thor as Jordan, Jaz Sinclair as Marie, and Lizze Broadway as Emma on season one, episode eight of &quot;Gen V.&quot;" height="2000" width="3000" msid="104971988" hostid="261" sizebytes="248832"></div><p><strong>Jumping into the finale, I know characters have come up against Homelander and have survived, but I was still impressed by Marie. She's so young. She's so new to us. So my first thing is, is season two going to actually show us what happened to her in that moment?</strong></p><p>I will neither confirm or deny that. And also we're just at the beginning of breaking season two, but even if I knew the answer to that, I wouldn't tell you.</p><p>But I think you're right that Homelander has lasered people before, and they didn't die. And I think what you could reasonably take away is he only kills people when he has no use for them. So I feel like he has a use for these people one way or another.</p><p><strong>I think a lot of people assumed that maybe some students would end up in The Seven by the end, and instead, the season ends with the scene that you just mentioned where four of them are locked up somewhere. So can you talk about why that scene, that cliffhanger, felt like the right way to cap off the season?</strong></p><p>As opposed to one of them ending up on The Seven?</p><p><strong>I personally don't think that was ever going to be a thing by the end.</strong></p><p>You're right to assume that, yes.</p><p><strong>Just the decision to end with that specific scene and that cliffhanger.</strong></p><p>I think it did two things. There's a conclusion to the story, and the conclusion isn't great. They're OK, they're not dead, but they don't know what's going to happen next, and they don't know who even is holding onto them. But they also know that they've come to a very disillusioned place where everything you thought was true, and everything you thought you wanted, is maybe not what you wanted.</p><p>I always like setting up, in storytelling, the notion that anything can happen, but this one thing can definitely not happen — and then you make it happen. Anything can happen, but definitely don't open up The Woods — and then you open up The Woods, and then you see what happens. So that's sort of how we got to that ending. We knew at some point in episode eight we were going to just open it up. And then we went where the story took us.</p><div type="image" title="Jaz Sinclair as Marie on season one, episode eight of &quot;Gen V.&quot;" height="2000" width="2666" msid="104971989" hostid="261" sizebytes="148236"></div><p><strong>And in all the chaos unleashing, how easy or difficult was it to get Rihanna's "Desperado" approved for use?</strong></p><p>Really hard. I learned a lot about rights and split rights and rights disputes. So it's not Rihanna's fault; it's just that there are multiple people claiming ownership of this, and it's many lawsuits or legal disputes. And so yeah, it's a really good lesson. Don't shoot a scene where someone is lip-synching to a song unless you definitely know you can clear it.</p><p><strong>I think it's one of the many great needle drops on the show, so I'm glad you guys got that in there.</strong></p><p>Our music supervisors were terrific. Although I have to say the writer, Brant Englestein, chose that song, and it was in the script that way.</p><p><strong>I love it. It works really well. I saw fans saying they liked it, too.</strong></p><p>Great.</p><p><strong>Also, in the finale, Marie and Emma unlock different ways to use their powers. Marie uses other people's blood instead of her own, and Emma shrinks after her fight. So, what was happening with Emma specifically? I have to assume there's more to it than just shrinking because of crying. I mean, this cannot be the first time she's cried. So, can you talk about the Emma scene a bit more and what was happening there?</strong></p><p>We even saw in episode seven Marie developed a new understanding of her power when she met Neuman. She could actually sense the V in Neuman's blood.</p><p>So I like the idea that they're young; they don't really know the extent of their powers. Cardosa said that. And so, in different ways, they're all sort of evolving their understanding of themselves because it's a metaphor for how we understand ourselves, even as young adults.</p><p>So for Emma, this is the first time that's happened to her, and it's the first time she's realized, oh, my power doesn't have to be connected to purging or bingeing. But it also is a bit of a problem because it happened without her being able to control it; it sort of happens. So it's interesting. And then the other question is, well, can you separate her eating disorder from the power? Does the eating disorder exist with or without the power? So those are all questions that that raises.</p><div type="image" title="Lizze Broadway as Emma on season one, episode eight of &quot;Gen V.&quot;" height="1097" width="1462" msid="104971990" hostid="261" sizebytes="36816"></div><p><strong>And do you think that there's any truth to what Sam said to her, where he said that she would do anything for people to like her? That was part of her story earlier in the season, but do you think it still applies to her by the end of season one?</strong></p><p>I think she's grown. I think it still is in there. And I think even the most self-assured, self-confident person has moments of that. But I agree. I think she has grown to understand that maybe she doesn't need outside validation all the time. But I don't think she's there yet. I think it's something that she's just starting to understand about herself.</p><p><strong>And I think, realistically, it just wouldn't happen over the course of one season of the show.</strong></p><p>Totally.</p><p><strong>And with Sam, he stops those hallucinations of Luke after he asks Cate to push him to feel nothing. So is there a possibility of more Luke in flashbacks or hallucinations, or is Sam done with him in that sense?</strong></p><p>I can't answer that right now. You mean for season two? I can't answer that. What are you talking about? <em>[Laughs.]</em></p><p><strong>Well, I was curious. I had to ask anyway. Now I know there are so many good cameos from "The Boys" characters. Was there another character that you wanted to integrate from that show that couldn't happen because it just didn't make sense for the story, or there were other scheduling conflicts and such?</strong></p><p>Because we were really targeted and careful about cameos, I didn't want to load up the show with characters from another show because then, at a certain point, it's like, "Well then, do you even really need 'Gen V' if you're just going to constantly have characters from 'The Boys?'" So no, I don't ever feel like, "Oh, we couldn't make it work, so we'll just have to do something else." I think everything happened the way we hoped it would happen.</p><div type="image" title="Antony Starr as Homelander on season one, episode eight of &quot;Gen V.&quot;" height="1998" width="2664" msid="104971991" hostid="261" sizebytes="249850"></div><p><strong>The last thing I'll ask you now that the finale's out, how would you describe "Gen V's" overall message? And is there a particular scene from the finale or elsewhere that underlines that message for you?</strong></p><p>The message is, I think there's an assumption that a lot of us have, that you have to go it alone, that you can't really rely on other people for help, and you really have to be self-sufficient, relying on yourself. And it's like, no, actually, there is no point to life if you're just going through it by yourself. And as much as you can gather your people around you and people who will help you and you'll help them, it just makes your life better.</p><p>I think that's infused throughout the final episode. And in sad ways, too. I think Cate really wants her friends to understand, "I'm doing this for you. I'm doing this because I love you, and I don't understand why you don't see that." So it's in everybody. They don't always get what they want, but it's in there.</p><p><em>All episodes of "Gen V" are now streaming on Prime Video.</em></p>
