Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa died of cardiac arrest at Apollo Hospital in Chennai. She was admitted to Apollo Hospitals since September with fever and dehydration. 
 
She was on assisted breathing-Extra-Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO)-device, which is a life support system that helps provide oxygen to the body when the patient's lungs or heart are unable to do so. 
 
In September, she was given respiratory support, nebulisation, drugs to decongest the lungs, antibiotics, nutrition, general nursing care and supportive therapy. 
 
After more than 50 days in the hospital, Ms. Jayalalithaa, in a signed letter, says she has taken a “rebirth.” She says she is waiting to get back soon to routine official work. 
 
She communicated through a speaker (a speaking valve) for a few seconds or a few minutes at a time. 
 
Jayalalithaa, born on Feb 24 1948, was commonly referred to as Amma. 
 
She joined the AIADMK in 1982. Jayalalithaa served as Tamil Nadu Chief Minister from 1991 to 1996, in 2001, from 2002 to 2006 and from 2011 to 2014.

Jayalalithaa was laid to rest with full state honours, next to MGR memorial at Marina beach in Chennai. Jayalalithaa died of cardiac arrest on December 05 at Apollo Hospital.Hundreds of thousands of people thronged the final journey Jayalalithaa from Rajaji Hall to Marina beach. 
 
Tears welled up the eyes of supports as people bid adieu to the ‘iron lady’ of Indian politics. 
 
Earlier in the day, President Pranab Mukherjee, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, other senior leaders, came down to Chennai and paid floral tributes to Jayalalithaa. 
 
Lakhs of people poured outside Rajaji Hall, where Jayalalithaa's body lay draped in the Indian flag. 
 
Seven -day mourning has been declared in the state. Schools were shut and thousands of police deployed to prevent any untoward incidents. 
People wailed and displayed dramatic emotions, beating their chests and heads. There were loud cries of "Amma, Amma". 
 
Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena also condoled her death, saying Jayalalithaa had a "towering presence in Indian politics". 
"At this time of grief, our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Tamil Nadu," he added.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa passed away on Dec 5 at Apollo Hospitals in Chennai. She died of cardiac arrest. 
 
Jayalalithaa was a favourite among people and fondly known as ‘Amma’. She was sworn in as chief minister for the sixth time on 23 May 2016. 
 During her tenure, Jayalalithaa announced a string of initiatives for the common man of Tamil Nadu.  "In the short run, you may see a mask of stability, but in the long term I think there's going to be a reconfiguration in state politics.  “BJP could see gains in the state during federal elections in 2019. To do well, a dramatic reshaping of the BJP's local party operations is needed,” N. <keyword id="1500746" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sathiya-Moorthy">Sathiya Moorthy</keyword>, director of the New Delhi-based Observer Research Foundation think-tank's Chennai chapter said. 
 
"They have to put their house in order,, he said. "They don't have candidates or organization in the state,” he added. 
 
It has also being said that her passing also represents a "short-term opportunity, for rival Tamil party, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam but over the medium-to-long-term, he said, the major beneficiary will be Modi and his BJP. 
 A.R. Venkatachalapathy, a professor at the <keyword id="171155" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Madras-Institute-of-Development-Studies">Madras Institute of Development Studies</keyword>, said the BJP likely smells an opportunity and has been working over the past two months to capitalize on the situation. 
 
"Whether they will win the elections in 2021 is not the question. They will try to become a player,” he said. 
 
Talking about the economic affect of her death, M.R. Venkatesh, a New Delhi-based independent policy analyst said, “the state may see political instability over the next few years as parties jostle for position. Economic growth could be stunted, corruption will definitely go up and foreign investors might even begin avoiding the state.” 
 
"The state is headed towards political vacuum," Venkatesh said. "How it will be filled up is a critical question.”

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister <keyword id="519509" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="O-Pannerselvam">O Pannerselvam</keyword>, who assumed the top office after the passing away of incumbent and ruling <keyword id="41902" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="AIADMK">AIADMK</keyword> supremo <keyword id="42104" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jayalalithaa">Jayalalithaa</keyword> days ago, will chair the first meeting of his cabinet here tomorrow at the state secretariat. 
 
The meeting is set to begin at 11.30 am when a resolution was expected to be adopted condoling the demise of the four-time chief minister Jayalalithaa on 
 "<keyword id="653890" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tamil-Nadu-cabinet">Tamil Nadu Cabinet</keyword> meeting tomorrow at 11.30 am. Honourable Chief Minister O <keyword id="291784" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Panneerselvam">Panneerselvam</keyword> to chair the meet," AIADMK said in a tweet today. 
 
Jayalalithaa, 68, died after suffering a cardiac arrest at the Apollo Hospitals while undergoing treatment for ailments since Sept 22. 
 
The cabinet meeting comes against the backdrop of the allegation of main opposition DMK in the past more than two months that the government was "non-functional" 
 
PMK had on Dec 7 said that the government administration which was in a "limbo" in recent past should "start functioning now" with Panneerselvam at the helm.
