The app called neoSCB is developed in a collaboration between UCL engineers and clinicians of the University of Ghana. It was used on more than 300 newborn babies in Ghana, following the initial study on 37 newborn babies in 2020. The neoSCB app analyses the images taken from smartphones to identify the yellowness in the sclera or white part of the eye to find the sign of neonatal <keyword id="6391404" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="jaundice" source="Orion">jaundice</keyword>. Direct analysis from eyesight is unreliable but the use of the neoSCB app gives an early diagnosis of jaundice in newborn. To determine the potential of the neoSCB app, the study was conducted to compare conventional screening methods and the neoSCB app technology. As per the study, app detected 74 out of 76 jaundice cases in newborns whereas a common screening method that involves the use of non-invasive device- transcutaneous bilirubinometer identifies all 76 babies with jaundice cases. The study states that neoSCBapp is in the line of accuracy when compared to common screening methods. The conventional method of testing jaundice involves the use of a transcutaneous bilirubinometer which detects the yellow pigment to measure the jaundice level in infants. Then further results are followed up by blood tests that are costly. Dr Terence Leung, UCL Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering developed the technology behind this neoSCB app, Leung said, app only requires a <keyword id="28168" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="smartphone" source="Orion">smartphone</keyword> which cost lesser than a commercial device. According to Leung, if neoSCB is rolled out widely then this technology can save the lives of newborn babies. Also, the app will act as a game-changer for hospitals that lacks expensive screening devices. Study lead, Dr Christabel Enweronu-Laryea from University of Ghana Medical School said, “neoSCB method was acceptable to mothers” as mothers were easily capable of keeping the baby’s eye open for jaundice test while breastfeeding. Impact of jaundice in infants Every year jaundice leads to the death of 114,000 newborns and 178,000 cases of disabilities in babies. Countries with higher income are able to reduce the risks of jaundice by conventional screening methods but low and middle-income countries are the most affected as they can’t afford expensive screening devices. The commercial device used for screening jaundice costs around 4000 Euros and further blood tests requires more expenses. The technology used in neoSCB has the potential to prevent death and disability caused by jaundice as it costs less than a tenth of the commercial device and it can be made easily available in poor countries. Also, it can support the health care system of countries with low income such as Africa. Researchers found an effective way of detecting jaundice in newborns using a smartphone app

Syphilis cases among newborns were up nearly 15% from 2019 to 2020, escalating further from what was already a <a href="https://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/907183?src=par_cdc_stm_mscpedt&amp;faf=1">20-year high</a>. Early data from 2021 suggests the trend is only getting worse, the CDC said, <a href="https://www.insider.com/gonorrhea-syphilis-cdc-pandemic-lockdowns-did-not-slow-spread-2022-4">mirroring hikes in other STD rates</a> nationwide, which did not slow down during the pandemic. <a href="https://www.merckmanuals.com/home/children-s-health-issues/infections-in-newborns/syphilis-in-newborns">Congenital syphilis</a> is preventable, easily treatable with antibiotics administered to the mother, or to the infant as soon as they are born. In 2020, there were 2,148 congenital syphilis cases diagnosed across the US, and 149 babies with syphilis died or were stillborn, the CDC report said. If babies born with syphilis survive, their long term complications can include bone damage, severe <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/nchhstp/pregnancy/definitions.html#anemia">anemia</a>, enlarged liver and spleen, <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/nchhstp/pregnancy/definitions.html#jaundice">jaundice</a>, nerve problems causing blindness or deafness, <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/nchhstp/pregnancy/definitions.html#meningitis">meningitis</a>, or skin rashes, the CDC says. In general, babies born with congenital syphilis can have "lifelong physical and mental <keyword id="11894571" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="health" source="Orion">health</keyword> problems," Dr. Jonathan Mermin, Director of the center for <keyword id="12562321" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="stds" source="Orion">STDs</keyword> at the CDC, told reporters on a call Tuesday. <h2>Syphilis is preventable and treatable. The rise in cases may be partially linked to more illicit drug use. </h2>The US's congenital syphilis epidemic is essentially the result of disparities in health care, and <a href="https://www.propublica.org/article/babies-are-dying-of-syphilis-its-100-preventable">a broken public health system</a>. Often, mothers of babies born with syphilis have not gotten adequate prenatal care, or undergone screening to detect they have syphilis. Dr. Leandro Mena, who directs the CDC's STD prevention division, told Insider that the data in this report can't explain exactly what's driving the increase, but it "offers some small clues.""Among syphilis cases in women, we're seeing increases in the percentage of cases reporting behaviors that put them at increased risk of syphilis, such as injection drug use, meth use, and having sex with partners who inject drugs," Mena said.Using meth or injection drugs can't give you syphilis directly, but <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/68/wr/mm6806a4.htm#:~:text=Drug%20use%2C%20particularly%20use%20of,exchange%20of%20sex%20for%20drugs">it is associated with behaviors</a>, like exchanging drugs for sex, that increase infection risk. Drug use alone can't explain the stark increase in cases across the US, though. Other factors driving the increase likely include disparities in prenatal care, housing issues, and lack of insurance for expectant mothers.Many <a href="https://www.plannedparenthood.org/learn/stds-hiv-safer-sex/syphilis/what-are-the-symptoms-of-syphilis">people may never know they have syphilis</a> without a test. Late stage syphilis can prompt tumors, blindness, brain damage, organ damage, nervous system damage, and paralysis. It can be deadly, but is easily treated with antibiotics.

In the first few days after a baby is born, jaundice is a seemingly common condition not only in India but across the globe. But now, a team from the University of Washington is in the process of developing a smartphone app, known as BiliCam, which might make it easier for newborns to be monitored by parents and doctors alike, and identify if a blood test is needed to confirm jaundice. 
 
One of the primary and most identifiable sign that a baby is afflicted with jaundice is a yellowish tinge of the skin. This however, is not easy to spot, and might make an infant terribly sick if the condition is left untreated. 
 
Jaundice occurs when a substance called bilirubin builds up in the tissues and blood of the body. Bilirubin is a natural byproduct of the breakdown of red blood cells. Excess bilirubin is usually metabolized by the liver, but this process can be slow in newborns due to the fact that their liver isn’t functioning optimally as yet. If jaundice not treated in time, it may lead to brain damage as well as a potentially fatal condition known as kernicterus. 
 
An effective home screening tool for jaundice needed 
 
The most indicative test for jaundice is usually a blood test. However, the need of the hour is an effective home screening tool that can aid in deciding if a blood test should be done. There are some hospitals wherein a non-invasive screening tool for jaundice is available, but it is a costly proposition and not suitable for home use. 
 
The tool devised by the team from the University of Washington (UW) combines a smartphone app with algorithms in a cloud and a color calibration card to produce results in few minutes. James Taylor, a professor of pediatrics at the UW explains that despite the fact that newborn babies are jaundiced, they are sent home from the hospitals before their bilirubin levels have had a chance to peak. With the help of the smartphone app, parents of newborns can get an accurate picture of bilirubin in the first few days after the baby goes home. 
 
How BiliCam works 
 
The app requires the health care provider and the parent to place the business card-sized calibration card on the naked torso of the newborn. A flash-assisted photo of the baby and the card is then taken using the smartphone. Key data from the photo taken is then sent by the app to the cloud using a data connection that the smartphone provides. This data is acquired with the help of the calibration card, which accounts for differences in skin tones and lighting conditions. The data is then analyzed by algorithms in the cloud and within a matter of minutes, a report on the likely levels of bilirubin in the newborn is sent to the smartphone. 
 
Comparison of the app with traditional jaundice screening tools 
 
The app has so far been tested by the team in a clinical study in the newborn nursery at the UW Medical Center, involving 100 newborns and their families. Medical director professor Taylor, who led the study, conducted a blood test and screening with BiliCam on the newborns, when they were between two to five days old. According to the result, BiliCam was shown to have performed as well as or better than the current traditional screening tool. While the idea isn’t for the app to completely replace blood tests to denote bilirubin levels, but to assist parents in knowing what next steps they might need to take. 
 
The team reveals that the algorithms in the cloud as opposed to the smartphone make it more seamless to be improved over time. Professor Taylor and his team now plan to test their BiliCam app on up to 1,000 newborns with a range of skin pigments. This will allow them to denote whether the algorithms are robust enough to use with babies of all skin colors and ethnicities. 
 
Conversions to take place over the year 
 
According to the team, it should take about a year for doctors to start using BiliCam as an alternative to the current screening tool for bilirubin. While patents are still pending, the team is hopeful that the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) will approve the app, allowing parents to use it at home within the next two years. 
 
Professor Taylor and his team are excited about the potential of BiliCam in developing countries and resource-poor areas where many newborn deaths are caused by jaundice. They foresee it to make a magnanimous difference in areas where there might not be adequate tools to measure bilirubin with, but do have decent infrastructure for mobile phones. 
 
The team’s work will be presented at the Association for Computing Machinery's International Joint Conference on Pervasive and Ubiquitous Computing, which takes place in September in Seattle. The research behind the app was funded by the Coulter Foundation and a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship.

She had lined up a lactation consultation, arranged for childcare, and expected her two older children to be in preschool during the day.Mauskopf's partner at <a href="https://winnie.com/">Winnie</a>, the childcare company she runs, had recently given birth and the two women had coordinated their maternity leave. They even installed a nursery in their San Francisco office for drop-in visits. But when she gave birth on March 29, those carefully laid plans unraveled. "It's very intense. I have two other kids. I have this newborn, I don't have help at night. So I'm staying up all night with the baby." Mauskopf, 35, told Insider. "On top of that, I have my company that I have to run. This is really a time when the team needs a lot of leadership, so I can't take the same level of leave that I had hoped."She's also had to make do with limited in-person access to a pediatrician.<div type="image" title="Sara Mauskopf and her newborn daughter. Without regular checkups, Mauskopf said, "It is pretty nerve-racking to really feel like the buck stops with me and my husband, checking on the baby." She's grateful that Ryan isn't her first child."My heart really goes out to first-time parents, because I think it's so difficult to navigate having a new baby when everything is available to you," Mauskopf said. "And now I even have trouble buying diapers and wipes. If this was my first child, I don't think I would be talking to you." <h2>'I had imagined being surrounded by other women'</h2>Maggie Burr is a first-time mom in Holland, Michigan. She told Insider she's struggling without the physical support of family and friends she expected. "The hardest part of the postpartum experience for me has just been not having anyone to help us," Burr, 40, said. "It happened so quickly. We knew COVID-19 was coming, but we didn't realize how fast everything was going to change."Practicing social distancing meant no nannies or babysitters, and subsequently no downtime. "My husband and I haven't had any time to ourselves without the baby since she was born," Burr said. "That was not what we expected." After six weeks the couple is finally starting to adjust. But Burr says she feels like she's been robbed of the female community she imagined would support her in the first months of <keyword id="18248" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Motherhood">motherhood</keyword>. One friend had even offered to reorganize a guest bedroom, allowing Burr to nap while she watched the baby at her house. "Because people were being incredibly generous with their offers, I had imagined being surrounded by other women," Burr said. "My husband is wonderful, but it's not the same as being around other moms." <h2>For many mothers, the virus has put a pall over bonding time with their baby</h2><a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/breakingmom/comments/g0e7hd/being_a_new_mom_is_hard_being_a_new_mom_during_a/">On Reddit</a>, the mother of a 7-week-old confided she was "close to losing it." "If I get sick or die, there won't be anyone to feed her."The pandemic has smothered what should be a wonderful time under a "big black fog," she added."Nobody will look back on this time and think about how fast she grew, or how good her cuddles are, or how cute her first smiles were," she wrote. "All they'll think about is f--king COVID-19."<div type="image" title="postpartum depression" height="3408" width="5144" msid="75336501" hostid="261"></div>Sarah Verbiest, the director of the <a href="https://www.mombaby.org">University of North Carolina's Center for Maternal and Infant Health</a>, told Insider that new moms should give themselves permission to feel sad or frustrated."Just feel the loss of that experience," Verbiest said, adding that new moms can think about "what was the most important thing that they needed and how they could get that support in a different way."That will look different for everyone, she added, but it could include regularly scheduled video chats with family and friends or seeking out <a href="https://newmomhealth.com/coronavirus-for-new-moms">online support groups and resources. </a>Verbiest also encouraged moms to be vigilant about their mental health. Even without the stress surrounding the pandemic, 15% of new mothers experience postpartum depression, <a href="https://www.postpartum.net/learn-more/depression-during-pregnancy-postpartum/">according to Postpartum Support International</a>, and 10% develop postpartum anxiety. Verbiest said social distancing is making things harder for new moms because "a lot of the coping strategies that we normally recommend — like spending time outside, spending time with friends, and getting extra help — are not available."<h2>Postpartum depression or pandemic anxiety?</h2>Though she had felt some anxiety after bringing her baby home from the hospital in March, Kathryn, a 39-year-old mom in Indiana, didn't think it was postpartum depression. She was sure the hospital's screening survey didn't apply to her. "I'm taking the survey, thinking none of this is baby-related," Kathryn told Insider. "Yes, I feel overwhelmed. Yes, I feel slightly depressed. Yes, I feel like things are just out of my control. But things are out of my control," she said. "But none of this is postpartum, this is all COVID-19." "Everyone is depressed and anxious right now," bunbun211 wrote on Reddit. "Why should I deserve more help or support than others? Having a baby doesn't make me special."It may be months before we can tell if the pandemic has caused rates of postpartum depression to rise. But even during a global health crisis, Verbiest said, new moms have to advocate for help."It doesn't matter whether she's nervous because she has a new baby, she has postpartum depression, or she watched the <keyword id="6355005" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="news">news</keyword> and is freaking out," she said. "It's all valid and it's important to talk to her healthcare provider." But it isn't just top-of-the-line nursery furniture and dozens of teensy polka-dotted socks that make demands on a new parent's wallet.
From unscheduled doctor's visits to a utility bill spike, a variety of unexpected costs can hit your bank account.
While everyone's experience is different, a little foresight can be great for the budget. So we reached out and asked real parents: What costs did you not see coming before your baby was born?
Here's what they said:
1. The cost of convenience. Andrew Key, who runs the website <a href="http://www.livingrichcheaply.com/" target="_blank">Living Rich Cheaply</a>, didn't expect that he would lose his inclination to comparison shop after his son's birth last July. "I like to consider myself a savvy shopper, and I always try to find the best price. But when you're sleep deprived and have a crying baby at home, you just buy whatever it is you need at the most convenient place," he explains. "Most times, the closest place doesn't have the lowest price, but it's not worth it to comparison shop when you're short on time."
2. Bottles. A few bottles aren't so expensive - but what about when you have to buy every kind? "No one really talks about it, but sometimes babies refuse to drink from the bottle," explains Key. "When my wife returned to work, my son would not drink from the bottle, which was pretty stressful, as he was extra fussy. We bought a bunch of different bottles until we found one that he was willing to drink from."
3. Utility bills. They say a baby should always wear one more layer than you do, but keeping the house warmer will cost you. "The one cost that I didn't even think of was the increase in utilities," says Grayson Bell of <a href="http://eyesonthedollar.com" target="_blank">Eyes on the Dollar</a>, who has a 15-month-old. "My wife and I are very hot-natured and love our home cold all year round. Since our son was born after Christmas, our home was cold, but that quickly had to change. We now pay double for our electricity bill and 30% more for our water. We would be paying more for electricity, but we reduced it by purchasing a space heater for our son's room."
4. Outfits. Babies grow fast - and sometimes, too fast for their clothes. "We seem to go through his clothes constantly," says Anna Newell Jones from <a href="http://andthenwesaved.com/" target="_blank">And Then We Saved</a> of her 5-month-old son. "Just as soon as we pull out a new size of clothes we're putting others away, and he doesn't even wear most of the items! If he does, it seems he only wears them once or twice. If we weren't given any clothes or hand-me-downs as gifts, we definitely would just be putting him in the inexpensive white onesies - the ones that you can get three to five in a pack for $7.99!"
5. The hospital goody bag. Even though he always considered himself a planner, John Schmoll of <a href="http://www.sproutwealth.com" target="_blank">Sprout Wealth</a> was still taken aback by his wife's hospital bill after delivering their first child. "We did our best to find out what delivery would cost and saved the money so as not to be shocked by the bill when it came," he recalls. "When we reviewed the itemized bill, however, I was surprised to see that the 'take home bag' filled with diapers, wipes, pacifiers, and other newborn goodies, wasn't complimentary. It came at a pretty steep cost."
Schmoll, who is a father of three, was sure to do it differently the next time around. "When our boys were born a few years later, I left the bag at the hospital and saved a few hundred dollars by having those items on hand at home. I also learned that I could get a few free formula and diaper samples from our pediatrician, which eliminated the need for the hospital's costly good bag anyways."
6. Takeout meals. "We thought we were doing pretty good by saving up money to cover the loss in income for the 12 weeks my wife planned to take off from work after having our daughter," says Schmoll. "What we didn't plan for was meals that first week or two after coming home. You're so sleep-deprived and overwhelmed with the newness of feeding a tiny human every two hours that you don't think about what you're going to eat. Without any freezer meals prepared beforehand, we ended up eating a lot of expensive, unhealthy fast food."
7. Dad's time off. Even though many companies in the U.S. don't have paid paternity leave, it's understandable that both parents will want to take time off to spend with the family's newest member. "You think about saving money for Mom being able to take time off, but not for Dad," explains Schmoll. "The second and third times around we knew to save enough money to supplement my unpaid leave so our budget wouldn't take a hit during the week or two I was able to take off."
8. Doctor's visits. First-time parents often find themselves at the doctor more than expected. "My husband and I prepared ourselves for the cost of delivery and expected lots of hospital bills to roll in, but I never thought about medical bills that pop up once the baby is actually born," says Amelia Hahnke of <a href="http://thehomebook.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">The Homebook</a>, who has a 16-month-old.
"Our son had jaundice right after he was born, and we took him to see his pediatrician no less than three times in the first few weeks of his life," she explains. "Then came the doctor visits for head colds and flu bugs and ear infections - for a while it seemed that bills were showing up in our mailbox almost daily."
