This season — the show's 19th — he's the overworked chief resident in charge of the new class of interns now that Ellen Pompeo's character Meredith Grey has exited. He knows his sexuality now, and since his ex-boyfriend Nico Kim (Alex Landi) has gone off to be a doctor for the Seattle Mariners, Levi has found a new love interest in a traveling nurse named Carlos (Calvin Seabrooks).Borelli recently spoke with Insider about whether there's hope for Nico and Levi's relationship, how the cast said goodbye (for now) to Pompeo, and if fans can expect any beloved former cast members to return in season 19.<h2>On Levi's romantic future and his most impactful storylines: </h2><div type="image" title="Alex Landi and Jake Borelli on &quot;Grey's Anatomy.&quot;" height="2000" width="2666" msid="99148504" hostid="261"></div>I know <a href="https://www.insider.com/greys-anatomy-couples-ranked-by-chemistry-merder-japril-calzona-photos-2022-6">Nico and Levi </a>have broken up, but I can't believe that Nico will be away from Grey Sloan forever. What can you tell me about this new love triangle Levi is in the middle of now that he's met Carlos? Well, I don't know if it's a full-on triangle because Nico has sort of been out of the picture for so long. I guess it's a big question mark whether he is still around in Seattle. I know Link's (Chris Carmack) character said that he's traveling around with the Mariners, so we'll see if he pops back in. But right now, we are definitely canoodling with the traveling nurse Carlos, who I love."Grey's" has told a few abortion stories this season in the wake of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/supreme-court-abortion-decision-final-ruling-scotus-roe-v-wade-2022-6">Roe vs. Wade being overturned</a>. Your character was involved in a storyline featuring a character who had a medical abortion. Can you reflect on what it feels like to be a part of such culturally important conversations on TV?I think people need these stories to show how different and complex the situation is. At the beginning of the season, we talked so much as a group about the stories that we wanted to tell surrounding abortion and medical abortions, especially. And we even changed the color of the OB scrubs from pink to black because this is a warrior moment. It's a culture war. And I think personally, I think we do need to fight for autonomy with your body and the right to choose.Speaking of culturally important stories, in the season 18 finale, during Grey Sloan's blood shortage, Levi brings awareness to the fact that men who have sex with men and their partners can't currently donate blood under <a href="https://www.redcrossblood.org/donate-blood/how-to-donate/eligibility-requirements/lgbtq-donors.html">FDA guidelines</a> unless they abstain from sex for three months. As a gay man, what did that plot mean to you? <div type="image" title="Jake Borelli wearing a blue suit." height="2697" width="3596" msid="99148507" hostid="261"></div>I've been pitching the concept for years because my character started out with the nickname Blood Bank. He literally gave his blood during a surgery to save a patient and was almost — not forced to — but it was thrust upon him. And then now here we are a couple of years later, he's not allowed to give blood simply because he's queer. It's not based in any sort of science we have around blood testing and around blood donation. It's simply an artifact of this homophobic AIDS epidemic.I wish we would've talked about it more at the beginning of this season because, frankly, the blood ban didn't go away. And I think there's still room to talk about it again. But even that storyline especially was hard for me because I wanted to get it right so badly because the ban itself changed from a one-year abstinence policy where queer men had to abstain from sex for one year before they could donate blood. And during the pandemic, it changed to three months because <a href="https://www.insider.com/greys-anatomy-jake-borelli-restrictive-lgbtq-laws-2023-3">they needed our blood</a>. It's so hypocritical, and so, it pisses me off so much.<h2>On Ellen Pompeo's exit and the future of 'Grey's':</h2><div type="image" title="Ellen Pompeo and Jake Borelli on &quot;Grey's Anatomy.&quot;" height="1998" width="2664" msid="99148511" hostid="261"></div>When Ellen Pompeo shot her last scene as a series regular, did the cast and crew throw a party for her or give her a send-off?The last scene that I shot with her was coincidentally the cheers-ing her off with all the champagne in the lobby. That was with most of the cast too. Linda Klein is our main medical advisor, and she was there in the shot too, playing Nurse Linda. She was standing right next to me, and we had shot from all these different angles, and then all of a sudden, there was a camera on the left and a camera on the right, both looking at Ellen.And I turned to Linda, and I was like, "Linda, what are we even shooting?" And she was like, "Shh, don't worry about it." And then they call action, Ellen comes out to start doing her thing. It was a big surprise moment for all of us. And Debbie Allen came out, and Krista Vernoff came out, and there was a singer there who, like, sang this fun parody song. So we had a big celebration then.<div type="image" title="Ellen Pompeo's final episode of &quot;Grey's Anatomy&quot; as a series regular aired in season 19." height="1687" width="2250" msid="99148512" hostid="261"></div>What would you say to people who are hesitant to continue watching or don't think <a href="https://www.insider.com/greys-anatomy-shouldnt-try-surviving-without-ellen-pompeo-2023-2">"Grey's" can go on without Ellen</a>? I would say there are so many characters that I've loved for years and years being a fan of the show, who we still get to see come back. And I feel like it would be a disservice to let that go. And "Grey's" has always been a revolving door of people leaving and frankly, people coming back. That's what the story is about to me more than anything now. It's seeing how these doctors come and go from this hospital and live their lives and do their work, and you need young people to teach. And you need OG badass surgeons to learn from, and that is what "Grey's" is.Since we're talking about people leaving and people returning, I think Catherine Fox [Debbie Allen] is going to die this season because her cancer is back, which makes me sad. But does that mean her son Jackson Avery [Jesse Williams] and his partner April Kepner [Sarah Drew] will return to say goodbye? Hypothetically, if Catherine Fox dies, then, of course, <a href="https://www.insider.com/greys-anatomy-jackson-april-japril-complete-relationship-timeline-2022-5">Jackson Avery and April Kepner</a> would come back, but that's if. Her son and her daughter-in-law would have to come back.<div type="image" title="Jesse Williams and Sarah Drew." height="1440" width="1920" msid="99148516" hostid="261"></div>Last time we talked, you teased the season 18 finale pretty well. Do you know anything about it yet?We have a handful of episodes to film before we even start talking about the finale. And to be honest, we've sort of all been kept in the dark too, because it really does feel like a pilot again. I'm telling you. I think Catherine Fox is going to die.That's what you think the finale's going to be? Actually...You know what? That is pretty juicy. I truly don't know. 'Grey's Anatomy' star Jake Borelli reveals how the cast sent off Ellen Pompeo and ponders the possibility of fan-favorite returns

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="13622200" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="jake-borelli" source="Orion">Jake Borelli</keyword> told Insider he recently read the "<keyword id="11995413" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="greys-anatomy" source="Orion">Grey's Anatomy</keyword>" season 18 finale and is "still in shock."</li><li>He said Levi Schmitt is "percolating" things in his mind and may return to Grey Sloan as a doctor.</li></ul>A <a href="https://www.insider.com/japril-jesse-williams-sarah-drew-fans-earned-greys-anatomy-spinoff-2022-2">fan-favorite doctor at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital</a> came to a crossroads of sorts on "Put It to the Test," the April 7 episode of <a href="https://www.insider.com/greys-anatomy-rob-lowe-mcdreamy-in-the-metaverse-2022-3">"Grey's Anatomy."</a> Dr. Levi Schmitt (Jake Borelli) is forced out of his basement when his mother Myrna (Michelle Gardner) falls down the stairs during an argument, and it's up to him to save her life.Levi has been avoiding his friends, his job, and his responsibilities since a mistake he made while following Richard Webber's (Jim Pickens) method of teaching killed a patient named Devon. Dr. Schmitt felt empowered through the method to make a decision in surgery without a superior present, and his fatal mistake sent him into a deep depression. After "Put It to the Test," Insider spoke to Borelli about what it feels like to act in the intense life-or-death situations that Seattle's finest doctors face week after week and whether Dr. Schmitt will ever return to the hospital as a doctor.<div type="image" title="Nico and Levi on &quot;Grey's Anatomy.&quot;" height="1992" width="2657" msid="90856365" hostid="261"></div>How do you create the tension on set that we see on screen in life-or-death scenarios, since you don't have the dramatic music to help you out? On set, everything looks so real, because we have the best medical department ever. So they make these prosthetics that look incredibly real. So when I was cutting into Myrna, I actually had a knife in my hand and blood was actually coming out. It looked so real, it was almost like you don't have to pretend that much.Do you actually feel the stress of those stakes in your body? Definitely. Kevin McKidd, who plays Owen, was directing, and he's just there behind the camera yelling like, "Okay, it's happening now? It's happening now, yell up the stairs." So he helps me with that adrenaline, too. And then for the opposite of that kind of energy, what do you do as an actor to prepare yourself to cry or prepare yourself for really emotional scenes, like when Levi is crying in Dr. Webber's arms?I really just build the history of what that character is going through. And luckily, I've been playing Levi for five years now, so I have a pretty good grasp of him. Adding in the given circumstances of what's going on with his mom, what happened with him killing Devon during surgery, his entire career sort of crumbling, if you just tap into those parts of you, it comesUsually what I'll do is I'll figure out based on the circumstances how he's feeling. And then I'll try to find in my body a memory where I felt that way in real life. And sometimes they're completely different things, but <a href="https://www.insider.com/greys-anatomy-scott-speedman-politeness-barrier-method-acting-2022-3">that's the work of an actor.</a><div type="image" title="Jake Borelli on &quot;Grey's Anatomy.&quot;" height="1800" width="2400" msid="90856366" hostid="261"></div>What's next for Schmitt? Before his mom's fall, he was basically making an argument that made it seem like he was ready to come back. Is he? I think that there was a lot in that nod to Richard at the very, very end when he is sitting at his mother's bedside. And it seems like things are percolating. He's seeing that he is a good doctor and that these talents he has mean something because it's what ended up saving his mother. And so I hope that he gets a chance to come back to the hospital, but there are a lot of people he probably needs to apologize to first, and who might need to apologize to him.What about the future for Nico and Levi? Is there hope? This was the most adamant I've seen Levi in his feelings for Nico, and I think it's hard. They don't communicate well and they both have different styles of communication, and different needs when it comes to that. And they haven't been able to match up on that. So I hope that they can pull through.What can we expect from the back half of the season for the doctors at Grey Sloan as the finale gets closer? All I know is I just read the finale two days ago, and I'm still in shock. I don't know how I feel. It's heart racing and literally, I'm looking at my couch right now, where I read it and my jaw was just on the floor. What's your favorite memory with her on set? Oh my gosh. <a href="https://www.insider.com/ellen-pompeo-greys-anatomy-impact-medicine-betr-remedies-2021-12">I love Ellen.</a> I'm so lucky that I get to work so much with her too. She's just so kind and she's so generous with her time and with her advice. It's just incredible. I mean, the biggest thing that surprised me is just coming to work, and it's early in the morning and she just comes in with such energy. She's oftentimes playing super awesome music on her loud speaker, just keeping the energy flowing.You've made history with Levi and Nico's relationship, as far as representation of the gay community on network television. In what ways would you like "Grey's Anatomy" to continue to push the envelope with authentic representation of the community? I hope they just keep telling authentic queer stories. I just hope they keep showing more facets of that community. And Levi has grown so much in his queerness, and I just think about myself and how I'm such a different person now than I was 10 years ago when I came out, or 12 years ago when I came out. And so I hope that we see him grow in that and grow in his power, and see him maybe step even a little bit further into the queer community.He's such a gamer, he loves D&amp;D and video games and there's such a huge queer gaming culture. They call them gay-mers. And so I feel like we could explore that. There are also so many queer doctors out there. <ul class="summary-list"><li>"Grey's Anatomy" star Jake Borelli said the restrictions on drag performing are "horrifying."</li><li>"I'm afraid about it, especially not knowing what the next administration is going to be like," he told Insider. </li></ul>In a recent interview with Insider, <a href="https://www.insider.com/greys-anatomy-jake-borelli-interview-teases-heart-racing-finale-2022-4">"Grey's Anatomy" star Jake Borelli</a> shared his feelings on the recent <a href="https://newrepublic.com/post/171025/tennessee-house-bill-gutting-marriage-equality" target="_blank" rel="noopener">anti-LGBTQ marriage legislation</a> and <a href="https://www.insider.com/tennessees-anti-trans-bill-could-cost-the-state-2-billion-in-revenue-2023-3">anti-trans legislation</a> that's currently being proposed and passed in some states around the country, most notably in Tennessee. "It's horrifying. It feels like we're being pushed backward, that we're being forced to take steps backwards," he said. "I'm afraid about it, especially not knowing what the next administration is going to be like." A Tennessee bill outlawing "adult cabaret performances" done "on public property or in a location where the adult cabaret performance could be viewed by a person who is not an adult," was signed into law by Governor Bill Lee on March 2. According to reporting by Insider's Yelena Dzhanova, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tennessee-drag-ban-bill-memphis-queen-2023-2">the law identifies</a> "male and female impersonators" — drag kings and drag queens — as adult cabaret performers. He said he was inspired to tell the world about his sexuality in part because of the "Grey's Anatomy" storyline in which his character Dr. Levi Schmitt came out as queer. "We all need to stay together at this point because they're going to keep trying to push us back. And it's horrifying," he continued."Grey's Anatomy" has explicitly addressed recent controversial changes in legislation in season 19 of the show, which is currently airing. Three out of the first nine episodes of the season <a href="https://www.insider.com/guides/health/reproductive-health/abortion-procedure">addressed abortion</a>, seemingly in response to the restrictions being imposed around the country <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/supreme-court-abortion-decision-final-ruling-scotus-roe-v-wade-2022-6">after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. He's hopeful that an episode involving drag queens will be written soon. "Oh, I've pitched a drag storyline so many times, and then they did an episode of 'Station 19' with some drag queens, which I was like, "No, I wanted you to do it on 'Grey's,'" he said jokingly, referring to the firefighter-paramedic spinoff that airs in the timeslot before "Grey's" on Thursday nights. <h2>Borelli says the FDA restrictions on certain people donating blood are 'hypocritical'</h2><div type="image" title="Alex Landi and Jake Borelli on &quot;Grey's Anatomy.&quot;" height="2000" width="2666" msid="98978410" hostid="261" sizebytes="437296"></div>One issue important to Borelli that has made it into a storyline on "Grey's" is the restrictions that the FDA put on gay, pansexual, and bisexual men, as well as other men who have sex with men, if they want to donate blood. On the season 18 finale of the show, which aired in May 2022, Grey-Sloan Memorial Hospital faced a blood shortage and Dr. Schmitt couldn't donate blood because he had been sexually active with a man within the last three months. According to <a href="https://www.redcrossblood.org/donate-blood/how-to-donate/eligibility-requirements/lgbtq-donors.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the American Red Cross</a>, the deference period of three months is still in place at the time of this writing. Borelli said he'd been pitching the storyline "for years" because during one of Levi's early episodes, before he came to terms with his sexuality, he was goaded into donating blood to save a patient's life and then given the nickname "Blood Bank."<div type="image" title="borelli greys" height="608" width="810" msid="98978412" hostid="261" sizebytes="34886"></div><a href="https://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2023/01/27/1151914885/fda-to-ease-restrictions-on-blood-donations-for-men-who-have-sex-with-men" target="_blank" rel="noopener">According to NPR</a>, the donation restrictions were put in place during the AIDS epidemic to "protect the blood supply from HIV" and were last updated in 2020.Borelli pointed out that when the COVID-19 pandemic hit, the abstinence period was decreased from one year to three months "because they needed our blood." "It's so hypocritical and so....it pisses me off so much. So I was so excited to tell the story, and I really hope we pick up on it again," he said, reflecting on the restrictions and the "Grey's" storyline. He noted that the guidelines aren't based on science" because every donor's blood is tested before going to potential recipients. On January 27, 2023, the <a href="https://www.fda.gov/news-events/press-announcements/fda-proposes-individual-risk-assessment-blood-donations-while-continuing-safeguard-us-blood-supply" target="_blank" rel="noopener">FDA released potential blood donation guidelines</a> for men who have sex with men and their partners. The proposed change would shift the restrictions from being time-based to being based on "individual risk-based questions to reduce the risk of transfusion-transmitted HIV." This system is already being used in the UK and Canada but is still pending in the US."Grey's Anatomy" airs Thursdays at 9 p.m. on ABC.
