'Jai Bhim', 'Gangubai', 'Badhaai Do' top noms at Melbourne Indian film fest

The movie is based on the rape of an underage girl by a self-styled godman. The victim in the movie is denied justice as bribes, threats and more make it tough for the teenager to get justice, until Bajpayee’s character Solanki enters the scene. The lawyer from Jodhpur fights off a battery of great legal minds to navigate a controversial case under the POSCO Act. "It is an eye opener that way and our focus is mostly on the security and safety and protection of the child, which is an issue which is very close to my heart - always been," Bajpayee said about the movie in an interview. Affable lawyers with twisted minds Solanki’s character, based on a real-life model, brings forth the struggles of the legal system in India. But it’s not the only one, especially on OTT. Yet another celebrated actor, Pankaj Tripathi plays Madhav Mishra, an affable-yet-brilliant lawyer from Mumbai who investigates his cases closely in Criminal Justice on Hotstar. The genius underdog also takes up controversial cases like defending a drug-addict teenager accused of murdering his sister, a woman who murdered her husband, and also a cab driver accused of rape and murder of his client —- across three seasons. Tripathi says that his character is based on aam aadmi, who mixes humour with common sense. “His behaviour, mannerisms, sense of timing and body language all make him easy to understand and relate to. Legal dramas keep it real While the US has many legal dramas to boast be it the super-hit Suits, Boston Legal or The Good Wife and its spinoff, Indian screens have been a late entrant into this genre in spite of a brilliant start in the 80s with Ek Ruka Hua Faisla. The movie starring Pankaj Kapoor brings the story of the now-abandoned jury system in India, as they discuss the depths of a case where a young teen from a slum stabs his father. Later, in addition to a few movies with courtroom scenes, few full fledged legal movies made their mark, with a few exceptions like Sunny Deol’s strongman cum lawyer in Damini. Arshad Warsi and Akshay Kumar both played the titular roles in Jolly LLB series — as not-so-clean lawyers who had their hearts at the right place. Kumar however headlined another movie Rustom which is based on the highly publicized K M Nanavati vs State of Maharashtra court case from the 50s. A 30 year-old man, who came to <keyword id="28504" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="kerala" source="Orion">Kerala</keyword> from UAE last month, has tested positive for <keyword id="7616951" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="monkeypox" source="Orion">monkeypox</keyword>, making him the fifth case of the virus from the southern state. Health Minister <keyword id="3296362" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="veena-george" source="Orion">Veena George</keyword> on Tuesday said the man had arrived at the Calicut Airport on July 27 and was undergoing treatment at a hospital in Malappuram district. His health condition is stable, she said. Those who were in close contact with him, including his parents, are being closely monitored. It is the fifth case of Monkeypox reported in the state, she said. The first case of monkeypox, a rare but potentially serious viral illness, was reported from <keyword id="6357351" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="kollam" source="Orion">Kollam</keyword> district on July 14 and the patient was discharged from the hospital last week. The second confirmed case of the infection was reported in Kannur district on July 18 and the third case was reported in neighbouring Malappuram on July 22. All of them, tested positive for the disease, had arrived in Kerala from abroad. The Kerala government, on Monday, had confirmed that the 22-year-old man, who died on July 30, tested positive for monkeypox making the fatality the first such one in the country. According to the <keyword id="6356311" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="world-health-organisation" source="Orion">World Health Organisation</keyword>, monkeypox is a viral zoonosis (a virus transmitted to humans from animals), with symptoms similar to those seen in the past in smallpox patients, although it is clinically less severe. With the eradication of smallpox in 1980 and subsequent cessation of smallpox vaccination, monkeypox has emerged as the most important orthopoxvirus for public health. The Indian OTT sector is one of the most competitive amongst emerging markets with over 40 players. While there have been debates about more and more people moving away from TV, Mandeep Kohli, Managing Director and Partner, Boston Consulting Group India states that we are still some time away from that happening at a large scale in India. “The share of traditional media is slowly declining with increased digital adoption but there is still high headroom for penetration with only 54% of Indian households having a pay TV connection compared to more than 70% in China. Content that was earlier restricted to just Bollywood and Hollywood is getting extended to other native languages and it is going to play a key role in attracting new consumers and in supporting other industries such as dubbing and subtitling that will further boost the content bank. Other than localization, we will also see content being offered across other segments that include devotional, and kids’ categories. As we see new OTT apps being launched almost every month with multiple paying models, the consumers will have more flexibility and power to make their own choices. With increased smartphone adoption along with affordable data, mobile penetration of the OTT will see more focus. Mobile-centric plans have been introduced by most OTTs today to cater to the Millennials and GenZs who have the hunger to consume content but not the deep pockets to pay. This space will continue to grow with the increased bundling of OTT by telecos. Additionally, the arrival of 5G which is most likely to take off this year will be a game-changer not just for the OTTs but also for the consumers. It will enable faster connectivity, accessibility to content and further enhance the viewing experience with reduced buffering issues, and an uninterrupted real-time streaming experience. As things begin to get back to normal, the question that we will hear a lot more in 2022 is: Where is the next level of OTT growth in India going to come from? The category has grown at an estimated 30-35% in its user base and more than 50% in paid subscriptions over the last two years. But these growth rates are not sustainable in the long run. Platforms will have to look for offerings that are both compelling and distinctive, to get new subscribers in a category that will continue to grow, but at more modest levels of 15-20% per annum. Crossover content, be it Indian (such as Jai Bhim) or foreign (such as Squid Game or Money Heist), will play an important role in this regard. The language barrier has been broken considerably by the OTT medium, and with dubbing and subtitles available in many languages for all major shows and films now, platforms cannot stick to single-language, homogenous offerings anymore. We can expect more language-led experimentation, both in content acquisition and presentation."

Several incidents of violence and stone pelting reported from interiors of localities such as Jaffarabad, Brahmapuri which adjoining Maujpur. At Jaffarabad metro station, a large number of people were seen carrying tri-colour and sticks in hands.  12:00 PM As protests rage on in Delhi over opposing factions over Citizenship Amendment Act, a high level urgent meeting was convened in the national capital to discuss the events. Union Home Minister Amit Shah met representatives of different political parties including Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal to appraise them on the status of violence caused by the protests. As many as seven people died in the violence in which also includes a police head constable. The number of injured also rose to 150 as of 12:45 today. The protests which took a new turn late Saturday (Feb 22) in the Maujpur area and raged on as pro and anti CAA clashed with each other. It was reported that some used guns, other pelted stones and some even tried to set a petrol pump on fire. All of North-eastern Delhi remained tense as Section 144 was imposed in the areas of Maujpur, Kardampuri, <keyword id="3354144" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Chand-Bagh">Chand Bagh</keyword> and Dayalpur.areas on Monday. However, the riots and protests went on through Monday night showing little indications of cooling off. On the contrary, the number of deaths, injured and civic complaints to the fire department is swelling by the hour.
