Following a heartfelt tribute to his father and former CM YS Rajasekhar at Idupulapaya, <keyword id="20321726" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="cm-jagan" source="keywords">CM Jagan</keyword> commenced his 'Memantha Siddham' yatra through the lively streets of Vempalli in Kadapa district. A sea of people, young and old, lined up to welcome CM Jagan. CM <keyword id="21108159" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="jagan-reddy" source="keywords">Jagan Reddy</keyword> alleged TDP Chief and former CM Chandrababu Naidu and Andhra Pradesh BJP Chief Purandeshwari were involved in the recent mega drug haul at Vizag port. "Recently, the CBI caught a drug container in Visakhapatnam, that arrived from Brazil. All opposition parties are falsely accusing the YSRCP. However, the company belongs to the father-in-law of the state BJP President, Purandeshwari's sons. They were previously associated with the company. If any crime occurs, they falsely accuse the YSRCP. Even NTR was betrayed," said CM <keyword id="20041086" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="jagan-mohan" source="keywords">Jagan Mohan</keyword> Reddy. He alleged that Chandrababu and his associates have received direct support from one national party and indirect support from another. "They have even managed to gain support from my sister. I am alone. All these parties have allied to fight against me. I only have the support of the public and God," he said. He said that the YSRCP government has strived for good governance for the last fifty-eight months. Grama Sachivalayam and <keyword id="21108158" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ward-sachivalayam" source="keywords">Ward Sachivalayam</keyword> have been established across the state. "On the first of every month, beneficiaries receive pensions even if it is a holiday. Our volunteers distribute pensions to 66 lakh beneficiaries, which reflects YSRCP's commitment. We provide a pension of three thousand rupees, unmatched by any other state. It costs 24 thousand crores annually on pensions. Without corruption, beneficiaries directly receive pensions through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT)," said CM Jagan. He said that the English-medium language was implemented in government schools and starting with CBSE, the transformation was moved up to the International Baccalaureate (IB) syllabus. Tabs were distributed to the schoolchildren in every government school. He further said, "The Disha app is assisting women across the state. Village clinics have been established, and family doctors are working for the welfare of the people. This is all possible due to the efforts of the YSRCP government. Arogya Suraksha is visible in every village. New ambulances are serving the needy. Arogya Sri has been extended to provide treatment up to 25 lakhs for the weaker sections. Farmers are receiving free power and fee reimbursements for students." He further said that a lot of progress has been made in the span of 58 months by the YSRCP government. "Fifteen medical colleges are under construction, along with four seaports and ten fishing harbours. We have also improved airports and services. The foundation stone was laid for the Century Plywood industry in Badvel. All this progress has been made in the span of 58 months. I have pressed the button 130 times and disbursed 2 lakhs, 70 thousand crores of rupees to the beneficiaries under welfare schemes," he further said. He further appealed to the party workers that schemes should be explained door-to-door ahead of the Lok Sabha polls. "Every beneficiary woman speaks about the pension in both Chandra Babu Naidu's regime and our regime. If this level of service and welfare is to continue, Jagan must come into power. Not only pension but also if the welfare schemes should continue in the state, Jagan is the only person who can do it. I appeal to all of you to explain schemes to the public door to door," the chief minister said. CM Jagan made sensational comments on Viveka's murder. A month before the last general elections, Vivekananda Reddy, a former MP, was found dead at his residence in Pulivendula on March 15, 2019. Suneetha Narreddy, daughter of former MP YS Vivekananda Reddy has accused her cousin and Chief Minister Jagan Reddy of obstructing a CBI inquiry into the investigation case into her father's murder. "Casting your vote for Chandra Babu signifies the banning of welfare schemes. He is not trustworthy. The TDP's manifesto will not be visible in the public domain after the elections. Not a single promise made by any of them has been fulfilled. The state hasn't been granted special status. Once again, the same three parties are in an alliance to deceive the public. Encourage everyone to keep the cycle out of the home, the glass in the sink, and the fan in the house. YS Sharmila on her visit to Idupulapaya yesterday, announced her readiness to join the Congress party and said that she will soon be meeting the BJP top brass in New Delhi. The significant move by the YSRTP chief comes days after the Congress party won the Telangana assembly elections. During the recent assembly elections in Telangana, YS Sharmila constantly rendered her support to the Congress party. She clarified that she did not contest the polls as it would have led to spilling of votes. "I am extending support to the Congress party because the Congress party stands the chance of winning in the Telangana Assembly elections... KCR has not fulfilled any of the promises he made to the people in his 9-year tenure. And that's the only reason I do not want KCR to come to power... I, as the YSR's daughter risk Congress' chance, because I tend to pull the Congress vote bank," she said in a statement made ahead of the Telangana assembly elections. Highlighting the significance of the support, she stated that the Congress party's victory in 31 seats in Telangana was largely due to their abstention from contesting. "In more than 55 constituencies I am going to affect the Congress vote bank and in more than 20 constituencies, I am going to help Congress lose in case I contest," she said. YS Sharmila could be given a key post in the Congress ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. Sharmila is also expected to play a role in the elections of Andhra Pradesh which will also be held next year. Congress won an absolute majority in Telangana for the first time, winning 64 of 119 seats. Jagan Reddy's sister, YS Sharmila to merge her party with Congress today

If a man is judged by how he treats his enemies, then Andhra Chief Minister Jagan Reddy has a lot to answer for. His opposition leader <keyword id="6354350" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Chandrababu-Naidu">Chandrababu Naidu</keyword> and his son are among many leaders of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) placed under house arrest by his government. The current detention aims to prevent a protest rally. But it seems more like the latest crescendo in a political rivalry that spans at least two generations. Naidu alleges that eight of his party members were killed, and many more have been assaulted by the ruling YSR Congress party, led by debutante chief minister Jagan Reddy. “We, as a state, are at the worst possible phase in terms of safety for people. Is there a mechanism to protect people in Andhra? Even as YSRCP kickstarted a welfare center for government employees, another attack took place on our party members in Anantapuram,” Naidu said in a tweet in Telugu on September 6. Reddy dethrones Naidu from his lair In the 100 days that Reddy has ruled the state, a myriad of changes have come in. Jagan cited environmental laws to raze a conference hall in the state capital Amaravati, called Praja Vedika. Though it’s a government property, it was built and extensively used by Naidu and could be termed as his ‘lair’. Reddy found another building which was 'too close to the banks of Krishna river’. This happens to be a palatial home rented by Naidu. His security detail was also rolled back by the state government. Stripped off his power and pride, Naidu decided it was time to go back to the grassroots and accumulate some popular support via a protest march on foot, padyatra. But Reddy wouldn't have any of it. The current chief minister knows that padayatras built glorious political careers--starting from former CM and founder of TDP, N T Rama Rao, and Reddy’s own father Y S Rajasekhara Reddy who was also a former CM, and Jagan himself. Painting his state in his colours Jagan Reddy has been a mystery to many people who know him, and do not. The five feet five inches tall 46-year-old appears to be soft spoken. Yet, he launched a phased and vicious attack on his bête noire, Naidu, without dreading public opinion. Some political pundits even say that Reddy wants to<a href="https://www.firstpost.com/india/arbitrary-decisions-by-ys-jagan-mohan-reddy-in-zeal-to-wipe-out-chandrababu-naidus-legacy-alarm-domestic-foreign-investors-in-andhra-pradesh-7172001.html"> wipe the state</a> clean of Naidu and his party. At the same time, he is literally painting the state in his colours. He has painted the state’s gram panchayats in the white, blue and green colours of his party flag. His deceased father’s photo are displayed prominently. Not all changes heralded by Reddy are cosmetic. He also cancelled the tender for Naidu’s pet project ₹3,200 crore Polavaram hydel power project. But he is keeping poll promises by taking over private liquor business, which is the first step to implement prohibition in the state. Reddy learns from Modi, but can they be friends? Reddy seems too have taken a leaf out of the same book as the Prime Minister Narendra Modi. When Modi stormed to power in New Delhi, he used the momentum to take the <a href="https://caravanmagazine.in/politics/how-amit-shah-helped-modi-sideline-his-political-rivals-in-gujarat">floor from the opposition Congress </a>party, which was at the time, led by political elites well entrenched in the system. Yet, Modi and Reddy are not natural allies. Unlike Modi-led BJP which thrives on Hindu pride Reddy has been a Christian for three generations. Unsurprisingly, Reddy's move to give ₹5,000 per month honorarium to pastors in his state was against BJP's core philosophy and caused disagreement. The state’s BJP machinery has been attacking Reddy on minor matters of faith. Yet, Reddy is playing it safe with the party which is in power at the center. Maybe he does not want to make another bitter enemy of a party ruling at the center. Enemy’s enemy is not yet a friend The Congress party which was ruling in 2013 had cornered Reddy just the way he is targeting Naidu. And, with worse consequences. After his father’s mysterious death caused by a helicopter crash, the Reddy family clashed with the Gandhis of Congress party. Not only did that ensure that he did not get a place in the Congress party where his father belonged, it got him into more trouble. He had later blamed the Gandhis for instigating CBI raids at his home and offices. This culminated in a disproportionate assets case against him which is still in litigation. In fact, he also spent a few months at Chanchalguda jail. In that sense, BJP and YSRCP have a common enemy--the Congress Party. But, Reddy has not shown any inclination to make friends with the BJP. But if he manages to wipe out TDP from the state, then he could ensure that BJP will not dial its former partner Naidu once again. It will ensure that he can enjoy unabated power, which is what people in power always seem to crave for.

Years of bad blood between Jagan Reddy and Chandrababu Naidu is spilling out

The Andhra Pradesh cabinet on Wednesday decided to set up three entities to ensure better and effective services to various sectors including Agriculture. The state cabinet, which met here under the Chief Minister <keyword id="162265" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Y-S-Jagan-Mohan-Reddy">Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy</keyword>, resolved to establish Andhra Pradesh State Financial Services Ltd, AP State Agriculture Council and <keyword id="8767695" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="ap-green-energy-corporation-ltd">AP Green Energy Corporation Ltd</keyword>. The proposed <keyword id="8767696" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="ap-state-financial-services">AP State Financial Services</keyword> Ltd will be a non-banking finance company rendering various economic services related to the state, Information and Public Relations Minister <keyword id="8322922" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="perni-venkataramaiah">Perni Venkataramaiah</keyword> (Nani) said. Briefing reporters at the end of the Cabinet meet, Nani said modalities related to the proposed company would be worked out later. "We have just taken a decision to establish the APSFSL. We will come out with other details soon," he added. The proposed Agriculture Council would be a supervisory body over the agriculture and horticulture universities and colleges in the state. The minister said the <keyword id="1723738" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Green-Energy-Corporation">Green Energy Corporation</keyword> would undertake generation of 10,000 MW of solar power. An expenditure of a staggering Rs 35,000 crore to Rs 40,000 crore would be incurred on setting up the solar plants and power generation. "With this we hope to get about 45 million units of power for our state's growing requirements, particularly the agriculture sector. The state is spending Rs 8,300 crore on supplying power free of cost to the farm sector while another Rs 1,500 crore is extended as subsidy to lift irrigation schemes," the minister pointed out. In another crucial decision, the Cabinet decided to amend the Panchayat Raj Act, to usher in reforms in the elections to local bodies. According to the amendments proposed, anyone found guilty of distributing liquor and cash in rural local bodies election would face disqualification. Besides, they could face a jail term of three years. This would be applicable in the case of elections to urban local bodies as well. Duration of campaigning would also be restricted to five days and the poll process would be completed in 13 days from the day of notification, the minister said. The proposed amendment to the PR Act also makes it mandatory for a (panchayat) sarpanch to reside in the same village. DBV ROH ROH

TDP head Chandrababu Naidu submitted his resignation to the governor. However, it is also to be noted that TDP has a 39% vote share while YSRC has 50% share of the state’s votes. Reddy’s legwork Jagan Reddy has walked in late father Y S Rajasekhara Reddy’s foothpath, literally. The senior Reddy of Congress party ended nine years of Naidu rule and extensive popularity in 2004, with a padyatra or a walking tour where he walked across every second village in the state. Jagan too had followed up with his father’s winning plan, with a <a href="https://www.ndtv.com/andhra-pradesh-news/jaganmohan-reddy-to-conclude-429-day-padyatra-in-andhra-pradesh-today-1974775" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">429-day padyatra</a> or a match-on-foot and has reportedly met 20 million of his voters along the way—something which helped him win the mandate with a thumping majority. The issues he took up with them were also high on voters’ minds. One question that Reddy repeatedly reiterated as to why Chandrababu Naidu the head of TDP was unable to get the state a special status in spite of his ‘closeness’ to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The state of Andhra Pradesh which lost its crown jewel Hyderabad, is on a rebuild mode after its division in 2014. In fact, Naidu broke away from National Democratic Alliance (NDA) over the issue, but that doesn’t seem to have placated the public. From Jail to CM’s post Not too long back, a few years soon after his father’s death in 2009, Jagan Reddy was embroiled in a CBI case which also involved his late father. The duo was accused of colluding and giving away licences and other mining rights to companies and accepting bribes in a disproportionate assets case. According to a CBI investigation, as much as <a href="https://www.thehindubusinessline.com/economy/rs-43000-cr-got-diverted-to-jagans-firms-cbi/article20458579.ece">Rs 43,000 crores were</a> diverted illegally into various businesses owned by him. The Reddy family have varied business interests across sectors like mining, cement, power along with investments in media companies. As a result of the intense crackdown on black money, Reddy was arrested in 2012 and spent around 16 months in jail. He was released on bail, and the case is still ongoing. A new party Last elections in 2014, YSR Congress was routed by the TDP-BJP combine. However, very few political pundits wrote off Jagan, especially after his thumping win at Kadapa by-elections in 2011 which shows that he had popular support. He had then won by a margin of five-and-a-half votes over his nearest Congress rival. Cracks between Rajesekhar Reddy’s heir apparent Jagan and party leader Sonia Gandhi emerged after she asked him to call off a ‘condolence tour’ that he went on, after his father’s death. The tour came at a time when tensions were ride on the Telangana state division issue. However, Jagan went ahead while defying the new Congress chief minister in power K Rosaiah, and resigned as the party MP in 2010. Soon after, Jagan took over the reins of the YSR Congress party formed by a fan of his father, and finally led it to its success. One of Y S R Reddy’s poll promises were free electricity and a health insurance programme and reinvigorated a provide rice for Rs 2 per kilo. While his predecessor Naidu concentrated on development, Reddy had successfully countered it with social welfare schemes, winning him two mandates in 2004 and 2009. With populist schemes, YSR soon turned a regional strongman with his stature elevated to that of a messiah --- which only swelled after his accidental death in 2009.

Jagan Reddy’s win marks the rise of the prodigal son

Four out of five elections in the bag ⁠— the first incumbent party in <keyword id="6357713" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="uttar-pradesh" source="Orion">Uttar Pradesh</keyword> to win the state in 37 years ⁠— is enough for a delirious party (celebration). The Bharatiya Janata Party (<keyword id="14666" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bjp" source="Orion">BJP</keyword>) is not a new party, but it’s the only one that seems to have the strongest organisation among all political parties. But money and power may just be two of the ingredients that make it so effective. The result of the latest election in Uttar Pradesh (UP) has reinforced one fact about the state’s changing politics: identity politics, as we’ve come to know it, is passe. <div type="image" title="UP election results" msid="90135835" hostid="261"></div> The wave of anti-establishment leaders, who emerged in North India in the 1980s, saw India as a mishmash of several identities, based on religion, caste, language and so on, saw an opportunity in becoming individual power centres by representing one or more of these factions promising them clout along with affirmative action. Their fiefdoms seemed to have broken by the Narendra Modi wave in 2014 and haven't recovered since then. It’s not because those identities have suddenly dissolved into a larger national, or even a state level, group. Both caste-based oppression and religious discrimination is alive and well. The <keyword id="6354265" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="samajwadi-party" source="Orion">Samajwadi Party</keyword> gained a lot by tapping into the fear of persecution among Muslims this time and won the best ever-vote share in the party’s history. <div type="image" title="SP won back the vote share in Muslim dominated constituencies" msid="90135994" hostid="261"></div> However, on a larger scale, the issue hasn’t won them the election. It just seems like people don’t expect politicians to resolve these issues. After decades of broken promises, people don’t seem to be looking for anti-dynasty messiahs who, eventually, initiate their own dynasty. People want to hear something new from the challengers. So, parties fell back on the tried and tested issues like unemployment and inflation. But that hasn’t worked in UP either. <div type="image" title="Assembly Elections 2022" msid="90135864" hostid="261"></div> It’s not like there were no chinks in the BJP armour. Even what the government could do on its own, it hasn’t. Over 10 million young people who applied for a Railways recruitment exam have not received the results in over 2 years. A teacher eligibility test to be held by the government became a controversy after it <a href="https://www.hindustantimes.com/india-news/till-when-varun-gandhi-raises-unemployment-issue-in-latest-criticism-aimed-at-centre-up-govt-101638421572885.html">got cancelled just before the elections</a>. But these things have happened in UP even when the BJP was not in power. The fact is even in the Modi or <keyword id="43254" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="yogi-adityanath" source="Orion">Yogi Adityanath</keyword> era, UP has seen massive job losses, partly due to the pandemic. But they were able to offer some tangible solutions too: additional work for the unskilled, under the rural employment guarantee scheme (<a href="https://www.business-standard.com/article/economy-policy/71-mgnrega-wages-not-paid-on-time-14-delayed-beyond-30-days-study-shows-121102901592_1.html">as flawed as it may be</a>), and free food for the poor. Does that mean that the BJP will remain in power forever? No. But the alternative has to be a new face, a new outfit that captures the imagination of the Indian youth in a way that existing leaders don’t. The Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) sweeping win in Punjab is proof of exactly that. AAP is a 7-year old political upstart that has become a credible political alternative in Delhi and Punjab, and broken ground in <keyword id="826" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="goa" source="Orion">Goa</keyword>. What works for it is Kejriwal’s crafty cocktail of welfare politics, anti-establishment posturing with a healthy dose of religious flattery. <div type="image" title="Punjab Election Results" msid="90136060" hostid="261"></div> In fact, it may even seem like what the voter wants isn’t exactly a new idea, but s/he surely doesn’t want to hear it from the same old flock of career/dynastic politicians. Even now, BJP has serious challengers in many states but none of them have any traction beyond their home states. Mamata Banerjee’s attempt to seek votes for Akhilesh Yadav in Uttar Pradesh hasn’t yielded much. Even the idea of a coalition of regional parties ⁠— from Arvind Kejriwal to MK Stalin, from Mamata Banerjee to Pinarayi Vijayan, from Jagan Reddy to Ashok Gehlot ⁠— taking on Modi seems jaded, if not flimsy. The way people vote for a state election is different from how they vote for the Parliament. This was the best chance for opposition to show some might and they’ve lost it. The opposition needs a new face to change the face of the government.

And it seems they have someone to thank for that. <keyword id="6388361" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Prashant-Kishor">Prashant Kishor</keyword> is the man behind their electoral strategy. The engineering graduate and former UN public health official hails from Bihar. Kishor, who also advised the BJP during its successful general election campaign in 2014 as well as Nitish Kumar’s Janata Dal United (JDU) in 2015, spearheaded the <keyword id="337550" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="YSR-Congress">YSR Congress</keyword>’s campaign this time around. The party handily won all 25 constituencies in Andhra Pradesh and 144 out of 175 seats in the Legislative Assembly - a staggering victory by any measure. The 25 seats actually make it the third-largest single party in the Lok Sabha after the BJP and Congress. For the last two years, Jagan Mohan Reddy’s party has been working with the Indian Political Action Committee (I-PAC), the organisation founded by Kishor. I-PAC had a coordinator in every constituency in Andhra Pradesh, providing feedback to the organisation’s leaders on a regular basis. Among these 25 Lok Sabha seats, 4 are reserved for Scheduled castes and 1 is earmarked for the scheduled tribes. All the 25 constituencies went for polling during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections on April 11, 2019 during the first phase of elections in the country. The state also sends 11 Rajya Sabha members.

BJP’s partner limps in Tamil Nadu As per exit polls, in Tamil Nadu, BJP bet on the wrong horse. Their coalition partner, AIADMK (All India <keyword id="294965" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Dravida-Munnetra-Kazhagam">Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam</keyword>) is expected to win fewer than 10 seats. Only News 18-IPSOS poll believes they will win 14 seats, while India Today-Axis poll believes they will win anywhere between zero to four! Congress’ partner DMK (Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam) on the other hand, has been a clear favourite. Four out of five polls say that they will win more than 25 seats, while two of them will say that they will win more than 30 seats. Naidu’s fury Both Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and BJP could have gained from an alliance, a second time around. But that was not to be. TDP head Chandrababu Naidu broke away from National Democratic Alliance (NDA) as his state was not given special status. BJP also failed to forge another alliance in the state. Most polls believe that YSR Congress (YSR-C), headed by Jagan Reddy could be a net gainer as electorate is exasperated with BJP and TDP alike. Four exit polls predict that YSR-C will win over 15 seats, whereas TDP will be lucky to get 10. Only Today’s Chanakya believes that TDP will get 17 seats. Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), which is headed by K Chandrasekhara Rao, known as KCR, is expected to come back with a thumping majority. Kerala’s Temple Run-ins In Kerala too, BJP which had no allies in place, is expected to report a dismal performance, and would be lucky to retain the single seat they won last year. This time around, experts said that there is a <keyword id="6354642" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Modi">Modi</keyword> wave which vanished after allowing women to enter <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/2-women-entered-a-hindu-in-india-breaking-a-decades-long-ban-2019-1?IR=T">Sabarimala temple</a>. BJP’s arch rival Congress which struck a deal with United Democratic Front (UDF) is expected to win 15 seats, according to most polls. The only good news for BJP comes from Karnataka. Almost all the exit polls suggest that BJP will over 20 seats in the current elections, leaving the Congress and Janata Dal-Secular combine with less than half of it.

The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is leading in 353 seats compared to its rival the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) that is ahead in 90 seats. The BJP made history even five years back when it clocked in a full majority, the first for any government since 1984.  No single rival was fighting Modi to win on his/her own. A motley crew of former foes were waiting for the final tally before they could stitch a suitable coalition that would end Modi's reign. However, as the counting progressed on May 23, it became evident very early that the the room for any political manoeuvre was limited, and eventually, even that disappeared. The Indian National Congress, the only national party other than the BJP, nearly doubled its seat count in the Lok Sabha, the lower house of India's Parliament, but for Rahul Gandhi, Congress' President, could not escape the embarrassment of having lost a seat, Amethi, that was seen as family bastion for decades. A grand alliance of regional parties, led by Bahujan Samaj Party's Mayawati and Samajwadi Party's Akhilesh Yadav, pitched itself as an alternative to Modi's strongman vibe. However, the camaraderie failed to strike a chord with the voters of Uttar Pradesh-- India's most populous state that is home to these two parties. The music stopped for the Mahagathbandhan when hoards of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/narendra-modi-varanasi-up-lok-sabha-election-result-2019/articleshow/69455114.cms" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">people in Varanasi</a> danced to Modi's tunes on April 25. The final result for the grand alliance were 15 Lok Sabha seats.  The adolescent Indian democracy was looking for <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/jlf-gandhi-vs-modi-bjp-vs-congress-dont-understand-indian-voters/articleshow/67685811.cms" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">a Presidential clash</a> but the opposition could not nominate a powerful alternative to Modi. The momentum was so strong in Modi's favour that even the terror accused Sadhvi Pragya Thakur-- who was also reprimanded for calling <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/patriot-act-godse-debate-kamal-haasan-vs-sadhvi-pragya-bjp/articleshow/69372552.cms" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">Mahatma Gandhi's assassin Nathuram Godse a 'patriot'</a>-- <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/sadhvi-pragya-thakur-vs-dijvijaya-singh-bhopal-lok-sabha-election-results-2019/articleshow/69456794.cms" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">won Bhopal with a huge margin</a>. The north-south divide The Modi wave was strong and pervasive but it limited largely to the north of India.  The BJP definitely improved its tally in Karnataka but it could not make any further headway into the other four major states-- Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana. While the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) swept Tamil Nadu with 31 out of 39 seats, Jaganmohan Reddy's victory in Andhra Pradesh marked <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/ap-andhra-pradesh-assembly-elections-2019-jagan-reddys-win-marks-the-rise-of-the-prodigal-son/articleshow/69462170.cms" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">the rise of the prodigal son</a>. Reddy's immediate neighbour to the west, K Chandrshekhar Rao successfully <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/telangana-lok-sabha-election-result-2019-trs-vs-congress-vs-tdp-vs-bjp/articleshow/69445813.cms" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">protected his territory</a>, Telangana, for a second time in less than a year. Rao called for a premature assembly election in Telangana in 2018 and came out of it with flying colours. The only other place Modi faced <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/the-tmc-and-bjp-are-fighting-over-the-nrc-in-west-bengal/articleshow/69194392.cms" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">any challenge was in West Bengal</a>. Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Mamata Banerjee did not pretend to play nice as BJP marched on to claim the eastern state. The clash of titans stirred the volatile electorate with a long history of violence. The BJP may have ended up second in the state but it bagged 18 precious seats that established the party as a serious player in the state for the first time ever. None of this was a surprise. BJP smelled the resentment against the local leadership in the east, and invested itself heavily. Modi himself addressed 17 rallies in Bengal, the most after Uttar Pradesh. The party cadre was funded and fuelled in Odisha and the north-eastern states and all of this paid off rich dividends, much on expected lines. Swinging states Six months earlier, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/here-are-some-reasons-why-indias-ruling-party-lost-to-its-main-rival-in-three-very-important-state-elections/articleshow/67057122.cms" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">BJP had to face defeat in state elections</a> in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Chhattisgarh. The party had just whisked past the halfway mark in Gujarat, Modi's home state. These results rejuvenated the Congress and, may be, made it a bit complacent too. Within six months, the same states swung back to voting for the BJP. In Modi's home state Gujarat, the BJP is leading in all 26 seats, in 9 out of 11 seats in Chhattisgarh, and in all but one seat in MP-- a stark contrast to the picture of struggle in the assembly elections in December. In Bihar too, the NDA is miles ahead of competition-- leading in 32 out of the state's 40 seats-- including in high-profile constituencies like <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/kanhaiya-kumar-vs-giriraj-singh-begusarai-lok-sabha-election-result-2019/articleshow/69453161.cms" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">Begusarai</a> and Patna Sahib. Debutante politician Kanhaiya Kumar, from the Communist Party of India (Marxist), has less than half the number of votes as rival from BJP, the veteran Giriraj Singh, who was also a minister in Modi's government. In Patna Sahib, sitting Parliamentarian Shatrughan Sinha is trailing Union Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, who has over 55% of the votes. There 17 other candidates in this constituency. Congress' solace Congress is leading in Punjab and Kerala, while its biggest ally the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) is cornering maximum votes in Tamil Nadu. In Kerala's Wayanad, Rahul Gandhi is ahead with 67% of the votes where there are 20 other candidates. It was a face saver for Gandhi as he lost the family bastion Amethi to the firebrand from BJP, Smriti Irani. India’s markets celebrated the results. The Sensex hit <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/sensex-rallies-550-points-as-bjp-leads-convincingly-in-vote-counting/articleshow/69458099.cms" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">the 40,000 mark for the first time ever</a> as investors hoped that the stability of continuing policies may the give the economy the much-needed fillip. His electoral feats and political might notwithstanding, those who care for it will blame Modi for demonetisation forever. Modi may have pitched himself as a pro-business reformer but experts have expressed fear that if he gets a second term, his policies are likely to be more socialist and akin to the proposals of <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2019/05/19/opinion/india-elections-modi.html">Bernie Sanders in the US</a>, and not like the policies of Ronald Reagan. Nonetheless, the baton remains with Modi.
