<ul><li><strong><keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> registered the highest digital well-being by country at 68, indicating an overall positive social media experience for <keyword id="11964015" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="gen-zs" source="Orion">Gen Zs</keyword>.<br /></strong></li><li><strong>India topped the charts due to greater parent engagement and number of support assets.<br /></strong></li><li><strong>Greater vigil by parents also ensures GenZ teens and adults alike, when they experience online harassment of any kind, will turn to them for any help.</strong><br /></li></ul>All the digital vigilantism of Indian parents seems to have borne fruit as the country’s GenZ teens and adults – aged between 13 and 24 – come out at the top of the digital wellbeing index (<keyword id="2143322" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="dwi" source="Orion">DWI</keyword>) compiled by Snapachat. <br /><br />India topped the charts amongst six countries that were part of the research. This is due to greater parent engagement and number of support assets – teachers, friends, mentors and a stronger social network, says <keyword id="6358096" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="snapchat" source="Orion">Snapchat</keyword>’s inaugural report named <em>2022 Digital Well-Being Index. </em><br /><br />India registered the highest DWI by country at 68, indicating an overall positive social media experience for Gen Zs. The index is calculated by measuring the impact of online activities gauged across positive and negative emotions, engagements, relationships and achievements. <br /><br />The impact of being online is divided into four categories – flourishing (extremely positive), thriving (mostly positive), middling (mixed-bag reactions) and struggling (negative impact due to social media). <br /><br />India had the highest percentage of flourishing and thriving respondents, with greater returns on their social media presence due to measured but impactful involvement of their parents, as per the report. <br /><br />“The subset of parents who did not regularly check in about teens’ online experiences significantly underestimated teens’ risk exposure to online harassment (by nearly 20-points),” the report said. <br /><br />India was followed by the US, Australia, United Kingdom, France and Germany. <br /><br />“Less than one in five French parents checked in with teens about their online activities. France has the lowest proportion of thriving and flourishing respondents. Indian teens stand out for having wealth of support assets. Germany has the highest percent of struggling GenZ population. France has the highest percentage of middling,” Snapchat revealed. <br /><br /><strong>India at high risk for teen exposure to online bullying <br /></strong><br />Indian GenZs spend between 2-4 hours online everyday and are exposed to many risks out there – online harassment, purposeful embarrassment, fake news, sexual solicitation, thoughts of self-harm and name calling. <br /><br />Despite India having the highest number of flourishing and thriving participants due to being online, it is important for parents and <keyword id="23045" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="social-networks" source="Orion">social networks</keyword> to keep a check on these high achievers. <br /><br />Globally, one in seven GenZ participants had thought of self-harm. Even though incidence of self-harm decreased with high DWI, the ones with high DWI would be more likely to follow through on the thought of self-harm due to high performance pressure, Snapchat reported. <br /><br />“Our digital well-being research yielded findings about Gen Z’s exposure to online risks, their relationships, particularly with their parents, and their reflections about their activities over the preceding months,” said <keyword id="1118049" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="jacqueline-beauchere" source="Orion">Jacqueline Beauchere</keyword>, global head of platform safety at Snapchat. <br /><br />More GenZs turned to their moms instead of their dads for emotional support. Snapchat revealed the ability of parents to accurately estimate the extent of their teen’s digital well-being was driven by parents checking in regularly.<br /><br />Greater vigil by parents also ensures GenZ teens and adults alike, when they experience online harassment of any kind, will turn to them for any help. Hawk-eyed Indian parents ensure digital well-being of GenZ kids, says Snapchat research

New Delhi, Unwanted contact, unwanted sexting, hate speech, trolling and being treated meanly are the top five online risks in India which has seen a dip in digital civility, according to a new research from <keyword id="10387" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Microsoft">Microsoft</keyword>.<br /><br />The results which were released in conjunction with the international Safer Internet Day on Tuesday revealed that 45 per cent of those who faced online risks knew the perpetrators.<br /><br />Among teenagers, 71 per cent faced a risk, while 81 per cent worry risk will happen again, said the study, adding that social <keyword id="6354777" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Media">media</keyword> sites are the most common online space for risks. <br /><br />However, 67 per cent of those surveyed said that they believe technology and social media companies will create tools and policies that will encourage respectful and civil behaviour.<br /><br />In the Microsoft Digital Civility Index (DCI), a measure of the tone and tenor of online interactions as reported by consumers in 25 countries, India fared poorly in 2019. A higher DCI score means lower perceived civility.<br /><br />The India DCI Index increased 12 points to 71 per cent in 2019 -- the highest in four years, the results showed.<br /><br />The report, based on the views of 12,520 adults and teenagers questioned across 25 countries including India, showed that physical appearance and politics are the primary drivers of online incivility, with 31 per cent of all respondents pointing to both of these two topics as problematic. <br /><br />Sexual orientation was close behind at 30 per cent, while religion and race came in at 26 per cent and 25 per cent respectively, <keyword id="1118049" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jacqueline-Beauchere">Jacqueline Beauchere</keyword>, <keyword id="23764" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="global">Global</keyword> Digital Safety Advocate at Microsoft, wrote in a blog post.<br /><br />The top five for online civility were the UK, the Netherlands, Germany, Malaysia and the US. <br /><br />Those with the lowest online civility readings were Vietnam, Russia, <keyword id="15385" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Colombia">Colombia</keyword>, Peru and South Africa, the research showed.<br /><br />

CEO Evan Spiegel explained how the new product will work as a platform for family engagement. He said it will help both parents and teens have a dialogue of how their experience is while using the application.<br /><br />The family centre will also offer more visibility to the parents in terms of who their teenage children are chatting with and what their privacy settings are. Spiegel also emphasized that Snapchat has been keeping its users’ profiles private by default, unlike other social media platforms until recently. He also said that the company does not market its app to kids under the age of 13 years.<br /><br />The family engagement product will feature an education centre and tools that will enable parents to keep their children safe. This feature is being developed amidst the crackdown on social media giants by US lawmakers to implement safeguarding tools for minors on their services.<br /><br />As per the company, it reaches up to 90% of 13 to 24-year-olds in the US and is growing worldwide including India. Earlier this year, Snapchat saw 150% growth in <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/apps/news/snapchat-app-witnesses-over-150-growth-in-daily-active-users-in-india/articleshow/85394136.cms">daily active users in India</a> over the last year and was in triple-digit growth rate for five quarters in a row. On Friday it said it wants to make it easier for people to report online abuse in its consumer communities, which includes everything from the internet search engine Bing to gaming community Xbox Live.</p><p>"For many years we've sought to protect our customers by prohibiting hate speech and removing such content from our hosted consumer services. While neither our principles nor our policies are changing, we are refining some of our processes to make it easier for customers to report hate speech," explains Microsoft's chief online safety officer Jacqueline Beauchere <a href="https://blogs.microsoft.com/on-the-issues/2016/08/26/new-resources-report-hate-speech-request-content-reinstatement/#sm.001shm8dh1dz3e5111utp5put3qg2">in a blog post.</a></p><p>To that end, Microsoft introduced <a href="https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/getsupport?oaspworkflow=start_1.0.0.0&amp;wf=0&amp;wfName=capsub&amp;productkey=hatespeech&amp;locale=en-us&amp;ccsid=636080036246240401">a new form</a> that makes it easier to report hate speech and a clear definition of the kinds of things that constitute hate speech.
