I typically <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=google">google</a> companies before interviewing execs. On my way to meet Vijay, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=google">Google</a> told me it’s been in the news that <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Alibaba">Alibaba</a> is increasing stake in <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Paytm">Paytm</a>. Exclusive: ‘Sadly, it’s not
true’: Vijay Shekhar Sharma on Alibaba increasing stake in Paytm

<keyword id="6357120" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="PayTM">Paytm</keyword>, the Noida-headquartered ecommerce giant is considering a plan to spin off its online marketplace. The change is being considered so that China's <keyword id="163405" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Alibaba-Group">Alibaba Group</keyword>, which had invested in Paytm in March 2015, can establish a direct presence in India, which is world's fastest growing ecommerce market. The development was shared with ET by three people aware of the matter. 
 
For this, Paytm wants the Alibaba Group to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Exclusive-Sadly-its-nottrue-Vijay-Shekhar-Sharma-on-Alibaba-increasing-stake-in-Paytm/articleshow/51452718.cms">invest another</a> $300-400 million (Rs 1,990-2,655 crore) in its marketplace. 
 
"Paytm may spin off its marketplace business, which will have Alibaba as a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Alibaba-buys-40-stake-at-Paytm/articleshow/47877417.cms">majority stakeholder</a> in that company and allow (the Chinese firm) to organically expand in India," said one of the sources, adding that if things go as planned, Paytm’s payments bank, digital wallet etc might be running as separate businesses in the future. 
 
There was no response from Alibaba and Paytm, citing it as market speculation. It was on Friday that the Chinese company had declared that <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Alibaba-planning-to-enter-the-Indian-market-this-year/articleshow/51468553.cms">it would enter India’s ecommerce space this year</a>, after its executives met Ravi Shankar Prasad, Minister of Communications and Information Technology. 
 
Once Alibaba enters India, it would pose a direct threat to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Sellers-on-Amazon-Flipkart-Snapdeal-cry-foul-over-rising-return-of-products-marketplaces-have-different-numbers/articleshow/51438343.cms">Indian ecommerce giants</a> like Flipkart and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Snapdeal-aims-to-overthrow-Flipkart-says-CEO-Kunal-Bahl/articleshow/48741092.cms">Snapdeal</a> as well as the Indian branch of Seattle-based Amazon. As per Goldman Sachs projections, India's online retail market will expand to $36 billion in 2016-17 from $11billion in 2014-15, thereby pitching it as an attractive marketplace for world's largest ecommerce companies.

Will Paytm pave the way for Alibaba’s entry in to India?

<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=vijay+shekhar+sharma&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Vijay Shekhar Sharma</a>’s <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=paytm&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">PayTM</a> has grown by leaps and bounds and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=prime+minister+narendra+modi&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Prime Minister Narendra </a><a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=prime+minister+narendra+modi&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Modi</a>’s <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=demonetisation&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">demonetisation</a> was icing on the cake for the digital mobile wallet firm. 
 <keyword id="6357120" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="PayTM">PayTM</keyword>’s growth is now also guaranteed after it received Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) approval for payments bank. So, as soon as PayTM Payments Bank comes into play, there will be stopping for the company. 
 
Despite several losses, PayTM is going strong and is currently valued at $5 billion due to multiple reasons. 
 
In a <a href="https://www.quora.com/Why-is-the-valuation-of-Paytm-so-high">Quora</a> post, where reason behind PayTM’s high valuation was asked, many contributors gave different insights to PayTM’s high valuation. 
 
Here are the 2 reasons why PayTM is valued so high 
 
1. Users: Imagine if PayTM is able to earn a rupee INR 1/day from all 10 Cr users. PayTM saw over 130 million downloads, which means more 13 crore users. Let’s take the approximate number as 10 crore users earnings of PayTM in a day- Rs 10 crore. Imagine if PayTM is able to earn Re 1 per day from all 10 crore users, this translates to Rs 10 crore and in one year Rs 3650 crore and Rs 18000 crore if it makes Re 1 every time you take your wallet out of your pocket for payment. 
 2. Another way of looking at this is <keyword id="198636" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vijay-Shekhar-Sharma">Vijay Shekhar Sharma</keyword> currently holds a 21.33% stake in One97, while SAIF Partners holds 30.81% share. Jack Ma-led Alibaba and Alipay collectively hold 40% in the company as Alibaba Group has invested $700 million in Paytm so far. The Chinese e-commerce major is planning to start an e-tailing business in India early next year, and is said to be considering using PayTM's commerce entity as the launch vehicle.

Here’s why PayTM is valued at $5 billion

After Google’s <keyword id="6372293" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amit-Singhal">Amit Singhal</keyword>, latest to join <keyword id="6357120" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="PayTM">Paytm</keyword>’s board is <keyword id="149204" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Mark-Schwartz">Mark Schwartz</keyword>, who is vice-chairman of the Goldman Sachs Group and chairman of Goldman Sachs in Asia-Pacific. 
 
Mark brings immense amount of experience with him as he played a major role in helping Alibaba founder Jack Ma and Executive Vice Chairman Joseph Tsai with Alibaba’s $25 billion IPO in New York in 2014. 
 Paytm founder <keyword id="198636" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vijay-Shekhar-Sharma">Vijay Shekhar Sharma</keyword> said, “He has played a critical role in building leading businesses in the Asia Pacific region and across the world. I am confident Mark’s insights would offer excellent leadership for Paytm as we work towards bringing half a billion Indians to the mainstream economy.” 
 
“India is one of the most dynamic and interesting economies in the world and I’m incredibly excited about working with Vijay and his team,” said Mark. 
 
Mark has over 27 years of experience in Goldman Sachs. He joined the firm’s Investment Banking department in 1979. After relocating to Tokyo as the President of the Japan unit in 1997, he became the Chairman of Goldman Sachs Asia Pacific in 1999. He retired from the firm in 2001 but later rejoined as the Asia Pacific Chairman in 2012. 
 
Last week, Amit Singhal, the former Head of Search at Google Inc., joined Paytm’s board of directors. 
 
Amit has been instrumental in shaping Google Search to seamlessly work across desktop, mobile and other devices. A Google Fellow, and former head of the core ranking team, he served for over fifteen years in the company.

With over 150 million Chinese and approx 50 million Indians travelling abroad every year, this deal is important for both Alipay and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Paytm&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Paytm</a> in their efforts to go global. 
 
The API integration is currently underway, and would be done by the end of the month. That means you can expect to book an <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Uber&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Uber</a> Black on your next trip to the US.

The second boost came during the pandemic, as people opted for digital transactions instead of physical cash to avoid the risk of virus transmission.
