Ransomware hits Jack Daniel's owner and Ritz London— investigation ongoing

Hackers cracked Jack Dorsey's Twitter account using a very simple technique

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><ul><li><strong>Hoaxes and disinformation are spreading in the aftermath of a shooting at YouTube's offices in San Bruno, California.</strong></li><li><strong>The Twitter account of a YouTube employee who fled the shooting was hacked to tweet out a hoax, alleging that a popular YouTube celebrity was on the scene.</strong></li><li><strong>Social media users have also falsely accused others of being behind the shooting, including comedian Sam Hyde and critic Anita Sarkeesian.</strong></li></ul><p>SAN FRANCISCO - A YouTube employee who fled the company's head office during a shooting on Tuesday had his Twitter account hacked to spread a hoax about the identity of the shooter.</p><p>In the wake of a mass shooting in America, it's become common for hoaxes and misinformation to spread on social media, and the incident at YouTube's office in San Bruno, California is no exception. Anonymous accounts repeatedly made false claims about the identity of the shooter - who has not yet been named - and blaming it on liberal political thinkers or prominent social media influencers, among other false claims.&#xa0;</p><p>Vadim Lavursik, a product manager at YouTube, was at the office at the time of the shooting. "Active shooter at YouTube HQ. Heard shots and saw people running while at my desk. Now barricaded inside a room with coworkers," he tweeted on Tuesday, before following up to confirm he was safely outside the building.</p><p>His account was hacked not long after, and sent the tweet "PLEASE HELP ME FIND MY FRIEND I LOST HIM IN THE SHOOTING" - linking to a photo of Daniel "Keemstar" Keem, a provocative YouTube video creator. Keem has been active on Twitter throughout the shooting, and has given no indication he was at the scene.</p><p>Lavurusik's account then followed up with another tweet: "my name is so gay honestly."</p><p>Both tweets were later deleted.&#xa0;<a href="https://twitter.com/jack/status/981283137786331138">Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey soon responded to the hacking incident, saying</a> "we're on it."</p><p>This is far from the only misinformation spreading about the shooting. Comedian Sam Hyde is frequently named by hoaxers as the shooter in the aftermath of shootings, and Twitter accounts quickly began spreading the claim that he was involved and sharing sometimes-photoshopped images.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>There is zero evidence of this, and police have said the suspected shooter, who has died of an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound, was female.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>Another hoax alleged that cultural critic and outspoken feminist Anita Sarkesian, a frequent target of online harassment and right-wing attacks, was the shooter. Someone hacked a YouTube employee's Twitter account to spread misinformation about the shooting

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Daniell Koepke turned to DIY poop transplants to find relief from debilitating gut symptoms. </li><li>She used her brother and boyfriend as donors, and her symptoms improved. </li></ul><p>As a college student, Daniell Koepke started experiencing <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/woman-with-ibs-going-to-bathroom-15-times-a-day-2023-4">irritable bowel syndrome symptoms</a> including indigestion, stabbing pains from trapped gas, and severe constipation.</p><p>When nothing seemed to help after five years of doctors visits, Koepke decided to try an experimental treatment called a fecal microbiota (or <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/fecal-transplant-boyfriend-poop-ulcerative-colitis-symptoms-pregnancy-2023-11">DIY poop) </a>transplant, where a healthy donor's feces is introduced into a patient's gut to repopulate it with "good" microbes. She used her brother and her boyfriend as donors, she told the Netflix documentary "Hack Your Health: The Secrets of Your Gut."</p><p>FMTs are only approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for C diff. bacterial infections, but scientists are looking into them as a potential treatment for many conditions, including depression, as growing research suggests there is a link between <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/doctor-gut-health-gut-gardening-brain-immune-system-2024-5">gut health and mental and physical health conditions</a>.</p><p>While some of Koepke's symptoms got better, she said she also started experiencing acne like her brother, and later depression like her boyfriend.</p><p>A similar experience was documented in the 2023 documentary "Designer $hit." A man in his mid-30s with Crohn's disease did DIY <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mom-donates-poop-fecal-microbiota-transplant-son-experiences-menopause-2023-11">poop transplants using his mom as a donor</a> for years. They appeared to ease his gut symptoms, but he experienced menopause symptoms such as sweating, hot flashes, and mood swings, similar to his menopausal mom.</p><p>Thomas Borody, the director of the Centre for Digestive Diseases in Sydney, Australia, who pioneered FMT treatments in the 1980s, told "Designer $hit" that it's possible the man absorbed hormones from her poop, but that link has not been proven.</p><h2 id="bbea4ef6-c803-4abf-bb91-6accf1d0d31d">Cutting food out of her diet made things worse</h2><p>Koepke's gut symptoms, which she believes were the result of a diet high in refined sugar and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sneak-fiber-into-diet-whole-grains-supplements-meal-prep-2023-8">low in fiber</a>, didn't fit neatly into a box. Doctors were at a loss for what to do, so they prescribed antibiotics "like candy," she said.</p><p>Over the past five years, she had taken six courses of antibiotics a year. But they didn't help. Studies have found that <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/health/do-antibiotics-weaken-the-immune-system">antibiotics can kill off good bacteria</a> in the gut.</p><p>As she got sicker, Koepke <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gut-health-mistakes-gastroenterologist-microbiome-diet-supplements-2024-5">cut more and more foods out of her diet</a>, as they were inflaming her symptoms, and she lost a lot of weight. Now, she can only eat between 10 and 15 foods without discomfort.</p><p>"It's really hard for me to remember what it was like to eat food before it became associated with anxiety and pain and discomfort," she said.</p><p>Guilia Enders, a medical doctor who's written a book on the gut, told the documentary: "If we cut foods out of our diet, we'll change our microbes drastically. Because who can live there if you don't feed them?"</p><p>The <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/health/diet-nutrition/how-to-kickstart-a-healthy-gut">gut microbiome</a> is made up of trillions of microbes that live in the colon lining. They feed off of the food we eat, but different foods feed different microbes.</p><p>Later, if a person tries to reintroduce certain foods to their diet, they might get symptoms such as bloating and stomach pain, Enders said. Dietary fiber is particularly important for gut health as it feeds the good microbes, but intake needs to be built up gradually, she said.</p><p>As Koepke can't tolerate a lot of nutritious foods, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/probiotics-can-improve-gut-health-not-everyone-needs-them-expert-2023-10">she takes supplements</a> to try to get the nutrients her body needs but said she feels deprived by her limited diet. She said she needs to repopulate her gut with healthy bacteria by eating a diverse range of plant foods, but that makes her symptoms flare up.</p><h2 id="8a2d41da-0019-407d-9c17-cdd4e33c759c">Koepke turned to poop transplants because she felt there were no other options</h2><p>An FMT starts with blending a healthy donor's feces with saline solution and inserting it into the recipient's gastrointestinal tract, either through an enema, oral capsules, colonoscopy, or upper endoscopy.</p><p>Experts in the documentary warned against trying poop transplants at home because there is a risk of transferring bad microbes and susceptibility to all kinds of diseases.</p><p>"The microbial community inside our gut can have surprising influences on different parts of our body," Jack Gilbert, a microbial ecologist at UC San Diego, told Business Insider. Stools are screened before clinical FMTs, and anything that could cause major problems, such as certain pathogens, would be detected, he said. When you do this at home, you don't get that kind of screening.</p><p>"With fecal microbiome transplants, there is really compelling evidence, but the science is still developing. We're still working on if it actually has benefits for wider populations and if the benefit is long-lasting," Gilbert, told the documentary.</p><h2 id="01134d2f-df80-410a-917a-0252392ec22b">She got acne like her brother and depression like her boyfriend after FMTs</h2><p>Initially, Koepke made fecal transplant pills from her brother's donated stools. She slowly started to gain weight despite not changing her diet and was able to go to the bathroom naturally for the first time in three years.</p><p>However, she also developed acne, like her brother, who had a history of hormonal acne.</p><p>It's possible that the bacteria in the stool can influence inflammation in the recipient's body, by affecting their metabolism and activating their immune response, Gilbert told BI. This would cause shifts in their hormonal activity, which could promote the bacteria that can cause acne on the skin. </p><p>"We nearly all have this bacterium on skin, but it is often dormant," he said.</p><p>Koepke decided to switch donors and, for a few months, used her boyfriend's poop for the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/poop-fecal-transplant-skin-cancer-melanoma-study-2023-7">fecal transplants</a>, who had no physical health problems but did experience depression. After she made the switch, her acne went away, but this time, she experienced depression symptoms.</p><p>"Over time, I realized my depression was worse than it's ever been in my life," she said. Koepke believes whatever microbes were playing a role in his depression were transplanted into her.</p><p>When Koepke once again switched back to her brother's poop transplants, the depression went away within a week, she said.</p><p>Gilbert said that according to his research, people with depression are missing certain bacteria from their gut. "She may have had the 'anti-depressant' bacteria in her gut, but when she swapped her microbiome with his, her anti-depressant bacteria got wiped out," he said.</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Rudy Giuliani has a lot of legal problems.</li><li>Filing for bankruptcy after a $148 million jury verdict won't save him from all of them.</li></ul><p>In MAGAworld, the man with the most legal problems is <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-criminal-cases-ranked-how-much-legal-trouble-2023-8">Donald Trump</a>.</p><p>Throw a dart at a 2024 calendar, and there's a pretty good chance you'll hit a date where there's a trial or hearing for one of Trump's four criminal cases or numerous <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/donald-trump-key-cases-civil-criminal-investigations-lawsuits-updates-2022-7">civil lawsuits</a>.</p><p>In a close second is Rudy Giuliani.</p><p>On Thursday, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rudy-giuliani-bankruptcy-millions-owed-defamation-chapter-11-2023-12">Giuliani filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy</a>, a decision spurred by a jury verdict finding he should pay <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rudy-giuliani-trial-jury-verdict-defamation-damages-georgia-election-workers-2023-12">$148 million for defaming two Georgia election workers</a>. He is also a co-defendant, along with Trump, in <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-indictment-georgia-grand-jury-fulton-county-fani-willis-2023-8">Fulton County's sprawling racketeering criminal case</a> over their efforts to interfere in the 2020 election. Those efforts have gotten the once-renowned <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-lawyers-sanctioned-by-courts-election-lawsuits-2022-12">lawyer sanctioned</a> in New York, and he is on the verge of losing his ability to practice in DC.</p><p>Lately, Giuliani has gone on the offense. He filed a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rudy-giuliani-suing-joe-biden-for-defaming-him-years-ago-2023-10">defamation lawsuit against President Joe Biden</a> for calling him a "Russian pawn." And, despite the massive jury verdict in DC, he persists in falsely claiming the Georgia election workers manipulated ballots.</p><p>The future for Giuliani does not look good, and his <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rudy-giuliani-bankruptcy-millions-owed-defamation-chapter-11-2023-12">bankruptcy filing</a> won't get rid of his legal problems. Here are his 11 major ongoing court cases, ranked in order of how much of a threat they are.</p><h2>11. The $2 million grocery store employee lawsuit</h2><p>In 2022, while Giuliani was campaigning for his son Andrew Giuliani's failed campaign for governor in New York, he got into a kerfuffle with a grocery store employee on Staten Island.</p><p><a target="_blank" href="https://abc7chicago.com/rudy-giuliani-slapped-attacked-daniel-gill-staten-island-shoprite/11998281/">According to Giuliani</a>, he "got hit" by the employee, Daniel Gill, "as if a boulder hit me." Giuliani talked to police, who kept Gill behind bars for a day and brought assault charges, which were ultimately dropped.</p><p><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rudy-giuliani-lied-cops-lawsuit-pat-back-daniel-gill-2023-5">Gill sued Giuliani</a> in 2023, alleging defamation and false arrest. Security video shows that Gill — who admits he's no fan of Giuliani — merely patted him on the back and verbally insulted him.</p><p>The former New York City mayor hasn't hired a lawyer and is representing himself in the lawsuit. As with the Georgia election worker case, it's another example of a defamation lawsuit where Giuliani made apparently false claims against a decidedly non-public figure. But the lawsuit still awaits a decision from the judge on whether to dismiss it ahead of trial.</p><h2>10. The blueberry farmers and a Ukraine film</h2><p>While Giuliani was working as a personal lawyer for Donald Trump, he raised funds for a would-be "documentary" in Ukraine about Joe and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hunter-biden-life-scandals-ukraine-involvement-with-trump-giuliani-2019-9">Hunter Biden</a>.</p><p>Two California farmers, Baldev and Kewel Munger, plowed $1 million into the project, which never happened. In August, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rudy-giuliani-biden-documentary-scam-money-lawsuit-2023-8">they sued Giuliani</a>, asking for their money back.</p><h2><strong>9. Hunter Biden's laptop</strong></h2><p>Giuliani has proudly peddled the salacious contents of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hunter-biden-lawsuit-rudy-giuliani-robert-costello-laptop-hacking-2023-9">Hunter Biden's laptop</a>, attempting to tie it to his father, President Joe Biden, and fueling an impeachment inquiry in the House of Representatives.</p><div type="image" title="hunter biden" height="3445" width="4593" msid="106270986" hostid="261"></div><p>In 2023, Hunter Biden struck back. He filed <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hunter-biden-lawsuit-rudy-giuliani-robert-costello-laptop-hacking-2023-9">lawsuits against Giuliani</a> <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hunter-biden-sues-former-trump-aide-garrett-ziegler-illegal-data-hacking-2023-9">and other allies</a>, accusing them of hacking and tampering with his data, which he says was stolen.</p><p>The lawsuit cuts into the heart of First Amendment issues with political opposition research and is still in the early phases of litigation.</p><h2><strong>8. Unpaid legal bills</strong></h2><p>Giuliani retained the law firm Davidoff Hutcher &amp; Citron to represent him in criminal investigations related to his 2020 election interference efforts.</p><p>But, according to a lawsuit from the firm, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/giuliani-lawyers-lawsuit-1-million-unpaid-legal-fees-2023-9">Giuliani never paid</a> everything he owed. Giuliani paid only $214,000 of the $1.5 million owed, the lawsuit claims.</p><p>In court filings, <a target="_blank" href="https://iapps.courts.state.ny.us/nyscef/ViewDocument?docIndex=LQmU3WYS4Tk5wLAh7jGGag==">Giuliani claimed that he signed an agreement with the attorney Robert Costello</a>, and not Davidoff Hutcher &amp; Citron, where Costello works. It remains to be seen whether a judge will buy his argument.</p><h2>7. Dominion</h2><p>After Trump lost the 2020 election, Giuliani, then working as his personal lawyer, went on a media tour falsely claiming that the results were rigged by two technology companies: <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/everyone-dominion-smartmatic-suing-defamation-election-conspiracy-theories-2021-2">Dominion and Smartmatic</a>.</p><p>He spun a fantastical tale claiming that Dominion and Smartmatic, in cahoots with Hugo Chavez, the deceased Venezuelan president, secretly colluded to manipulate ballot counts.</p><p>It was completely false, and Dominion and Smartmatic both sued.</p><div type="image" title="sidney powell rudy giuliani" height="1666" width="2221" msid="106270987" hostid="261"></div><p>Dominion has already scored a major victory in its many lawsuits, winning a historic $787.5 million <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/dominion-fox-news-settlement-takeaways-what-happens-next-2023-4">settlement from Fox News</a> for providing a platform for Giuliani's false claims.</p><p>The separate lawsuit, against Giuliani himself, remains pending. And even though Giuliani declared bankruptcy, Dominion declared it would pursue its lawsuit to hold him "accountable" even if the company wouldn't recover much money.</p><h2>6. Smartmatic</h2><p>Smartmatic's litigation against Giuliani has been moving more slowly, but its tactics are even more aggressive.</p><p>It has sued Fox News, Giuliani, and fellow election conspiracy theorist <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sidney-powell-apology-letter-georgia-trump-indictment-election-interference-case-2023-12">Sidney Powell</a> all in one lawsuit, asking for an even greater sum of damages: $2.7 billion.</p><p>After Giuliani convinced a judge to drop some of the claims against him, Smartmatic went to an appeals court and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rudy-giuliani-more-counts-smartmatic-defamation-lawsuit-2023-2">got them reinstated</a>, giving him little room to maneuver when the case goes to trial, possibly in 2025.</p><h2>5. Noelle Dunphy</h2><p>Earlier this year, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rudy-giuliani-accuser-noelle-dunphy-a-cycle-of-abuse-lawsuits-2023-5">Dunphy sued Giuliani</a>, accusing him of sexually abusing her while she worked for him and failing to pay the salary he promised.</p><p>The other civil lawsuits against Giuliani all share a common theme, generally speaking: Giuliani spread nonsense about the 2020 election between Trump and Joe Biden and got in trouble for it.</p><div type="image" title="rudy giuliani" height="4214" width="5619" msid="106270988" hostid="261"></div><p>Dunphy's lawsuit is far more personal, and the allegations far more damning. The litigation thus far has included vivid, embarrassing details, such as that he <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/giuliani-demanded-staffer-oral-sex-during-calls-from-trump-lawsuit-2023-5">demanded oral sex while on the phone with Trump</a> and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rudy-giuliani-sex-abuse-lawsuit-transcripts-slurs-sexual-comments-2023-8">used slurs for minority groups</a>.</p><p>At this point, Giuliani's falsehoods about the election have already sent his reputation spiraling. Dunphy's claims would bring it to an even lower level.</p><h2>4. The Georgia election workers</h2><p><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rudy-giuliani-defamation-trial-ruby-freeman-racist-threats-trump-supporters-2023-12">Ruby Freeman</a> and Wandrea "Shaye" Moss — the two Georgia election workers who won a $148 million verdict against Giuliani — deserve a spot near the top of this list because they've already gone to trial.</p><p>The damages in the other civil cases, at this point, are all theoretical. With this case, Freeman and Moss struck a blow.</p><p>Even worse for Giuliani, the judge overseeing the case allowed them to enforce the judgment on a faster schedule than usual, noting Giuliani's past efforts to wriggle himself out of accountability. It was only then that Giuliani filed for bankruptcy.</p><p>While the bankruptcy case runs its course, Freeman and Moss are ahead of all the other plaintiffs in getting money from him, by sheer virtue of already winning a jury trial.</p><h2>3. The Georgia election workers — Part II</h2><p>While Giuliani was on trial, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rudy-giuliani-lawyer-outnumbered-defamation-trial-ruby-freeman-shaye-moss-2023-12">he continued to falsely claim in public statements</a> that Freeman and Moss manipulated ballots in Georgia.</p><p>Shortly after Freeman and Moss won their first case, they sued him a second time, asking for more defamation damages.</p><div type="image" title="ruby freeman shaye moss" height="1675" width="2233" msid="106270989" hostid="261"></div><p>They might just get it. In the first case, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rudy-giuliani-trial-jury-verdict-defamation-damages-georgia-election-workers-2023-12">jurors decided to award $75 million</a> — the majority — in punitive damages, which are <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rudy-giuliani-alex-jones-jury-rulings-defamation-millions-fines-2023-12">designed to send a message</a> and deter the same conduct in the future.</p><p>Giuliani is clearly unbothered by the jury's decision and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/giuliani-says-dont-regret-damn-thing-after-148m-defamation-loss-2023-12">continues to falsely claim</a> in public statements that Freeman and Moss helped steal the election. In the next round in court, a jury may decide that $75 million wasn't enough and bring even more punitive damages.</p><h2>2. Unindicted co-conspirator No. 1</h2><p>While Giuliani may end up owing hundreds of millions of dollars once his civil lawsuits wrap up, none of them can land him behind bars.</p><p>Criminal cases can.</p><p>Giuliani — once one of the most powerful figures in the Department of Justice — isn't explicitly named in Justice Department Special Counsel Jack Smith's <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/donald-trump-indictment-jan-6-election-doj-2023-7">criminal case against Donald Trump over election interference</a>, but he still plays an important role.</p><div type="image" title="Donald Trump with then-Mayor Rudy Giuliani at Trump's Ferry Point Golf Club in the Bronx in 2015." height="1664" width="2219" msid="106271057" hostid="261"></div><p>Giuliani is "Co-conspirator 1" in the indictment, described as working hand-in-glove with Trump to file fraudulent lawsuits to overturn the election results in swing states and organizing a slate of fake electors to have Congress wrongly recognize Trump as the winner.</p><p>Smith is planning to bring Trump to trial next year, but he has already laid out the essence of a criminal case against Giuliani, and may still bring it.</p><h2>1. The Fulton County criminal case</h2><p>In Georgia, Giuliani is already a criminal defendant.</p><p>Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis included him as a defendant in her sprawling election interference racketeering case. It was an ignominious milestone for a man who once pioneered the use of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rudy-giuliani-indicted-georgia-trump-rico-2023-8">RICO cases</a> as a prosecutor. Along with Trump, he faces the most criminal counts against him in the case.</p><p>Several co-defendants — including Sidney Powell — have already <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/fulton-county-georgia-trump-indictment-plea-deals-rudy-giuliani-election-2023-10">taken plea deals</a> with prosecutors. Their cooperation in the case <a target="_blank" href="https://www.ajc.com/politics/how-guilty-pleas-could-advance-fulton-election-probe/TZN5DPH3UJBALJ2VNYXY2YR7W4/">makes things riskier for Giuliani</a>, since some of them worked directly with him in his election interference efforts.</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Trump on Thursday said Democrats were trying to distract from the release of the <keyword id="11907756" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="arizona-audit" source="Orion">Arizona audit</keyword>.</li><li>He seemed unaware that a draft result had been released and confirmed Joe Biden's win.</li><li>Trump allies had hyped the audit, saying it would uncover a vast plot to steal the 2020 election.</li></ul><p>Former President <keyword id="11914386" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="donald-trump" source="Orion">Donald Trump</keyword> on Thursday accused Democrats of seeking to distract from the release of the result of the controversial vote audit in Maricopa County, Arizona.</p><p>But he appears to have launched the attack unaware that details of the audit had already been released, and that the audit had confirmed that President Joe Biden was the victor. </p><p>In the statement late Thursday, Trump hit out at the House of Representatives commission investigating the January 6 attack on the Capitol, which on Thursday <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/january-6-committee-issues-subpoenas-to-bannon-meadows-scavino-patel-2021-9?r=US&amp;IR=TIR=T">subpoenaed allies and aides of the president</a>.</p><p>Trump said the move was timed to distract from the expected release on Friday of the result of the Maricopa County audit by the contractors Cyber Ninjas.</p><p>The audit attracted criticism from state election officials and some Republican officials, who accused Cyber Ninjas of conducting a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/dem-gop-officials-warn-arizona-audit-cant-be-trusted-2021-8?r=US&amp;IR=TIR=T">shambolic process</a> designed to substantiate right-wing conspiracy theories and undermine Biden's win. </p><p>The result of the process has been eagerly anticipated by supporters of the former president, who hoped it would undermine Joe Biden's victory in the battleground state, which helped secure him the presidency in November 2020.</p><p>Trump's statement, distributed by email around 11 p.m. ET, said, "Interesting that the Unselect Committee of political hacks 'dropped' their subpoena request the night before Arizona is expected to announce its findings from the Forensic Audit on voter fraud in the 2020 Presidential Election Scam."</p><p>He went on to praise Cyber Ninjas as "highly respected auditors" and said "everybody will be watching Arizona tomorrow."</p><p>But Trump apparently didn't realize that news organizations in Arizona had <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/leaked-documents-show-arizona-audit-confirms-bidens-win-over-trump-2021-9?r=US&amp;IR=TIR=T">obtained draft copies</a> of the audit result.</p><p>Reports on its results went live shortly before Trump's statement, and they made it clear that the recount showed that Biden had won, in line with the official result.</p><p>In fact, the audit found that Biden had won the county by 99 more votes than in the original tally, while Trump received 261 fewer votes than in the original vote count. </p><p>It was back in February that the Republican-led state Senate commissioned Cyber Ninjas to conduct the audit, saying it was necessary to establish faith in the integrity of the election.</p><p>The audit was launched despite there being no evidence of fraud or other malpractice that could affect its results. It came after Trump for months pushed his "Big Lie" that the election had been stolen from him as a result of fraud. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/dem-gop-officials-warn-arizona-audit-cant-be-trusted-2021-8?r=US&amp;IR=TIR=T"></a></p><p>In a statement early Friday, Jack Sellers, the chair of the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors, said that the original count had been accurate, and that the result was the "will of the voters." </p><p>"That should be the end of the story. Everything else is just noise," he said. </p><p>On Friday morning Trump issued another statement, making a different set of arguments about the audit, not mentioning its finding that Biden received more votes than him.</p><p>In <a href="https://twitter.com/realLizUSA/status/1441406311468617729">a statement shared by spokeswoman Liz Harrington</a>, he said the results showed evidence of fraud, and suggested that media reports about its conclusions were wrong.</p><p>Trump did not appear to have access to the full report, instead citing what he had "heard" about its contents.</p><p>None of Trump's previous claims of electoral fraud have been substantiated. Dozens of legal challenges were made, but <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-campaign-lawsuits-election-results-2020-11">none succeeded in overturning a result</a>.</p>
