The calendar marks October 15 as the World Students’ Day in honour of the former president of India Dr. A P J Abdul Kalam, who was born on October 15, 1931 in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu. Dr. Kalam occupied some distinguished positions as administrator and scientist with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). His contribution to the Indian military’s missile programs and the country’s civilian space are noteworthy. Fondly called as The Missile Man of India, Dr. Kalam attained universal popularity for his inspiring lectures and motivational writings especially targeting the students and youth. World Students’ Day endeavors to remember and appreciate the efforts of the icon in promoting the cause of sound learning and motivating the student community in achieving excellence in every sphere of life. Be possessed by a dauntless spirit As evidently shown in his autobiographical work “Wings of Fire”, Dr. Kalam’s life was not a bed of roses. He worked his way upwards in life through sheer hard work supported by his dauntless spirit. No doubt, human life is full of challenges and no man can escape from confronting the difficulties of life. Nevertheless, a dauntless spirit is something that can fuel a man’s journey. Problems are common, but attitude makes the difference.” Be inquisitive Dr. Kalam always encouraged students to be inquisitive. In the same lines, Dr. Kalam enjoins the students to ask questions, which is a prerequisite to gaining knowledge. He says, “One of the very important characteristics of a student is to question. Let the students ask questions.” Be original Every child is born on the earth with a lot of dreams. As the child grows up, it endures the pressure from the parents, siblings, friends and the society that force it to fit into some pre-existing stereotypes. In the battle to be unique, only a few succeed while the rest lose the game and settle with what the world expects. Thus, society always ends up crippling man and thwarting his dreams to be original. Dr. Kalam says, “While children are struggling to be unique, the world around them is trying all means to make them look like everybody else.” Here we can see the pains of a teacher who always wanted his students to be original and creative. Never fear failures Failures are a part of life. Fearing failures will impede man’s efforts to succeed. Dr. Kalam has said so much on not worrying about failures. He says, “Don’t fear failing in the first attempt because even the successful Math starts with zero only.” According to Dr. Kalam, failures must be approached with the right spirit and when this is done, failures can help open up gates to success. In highlighting how failures can teach us, he says, “If you fail, never give up. Because fail means “First Attempt in Learning”. Nevertheless, hard work is essential to one’s success and Dr. Kalam brings this to surface by saying, “You see, God helps only people who work hard. Vedanta founder Anil Agarwal honoured with Global Indian Award in Canada

<ul><li>APJ Abdul Kalam was a leader who contributed to the youth skilling and development initiatives. </li><li>In 2010, the <keyword id="6355833" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="united-nations">United Nations</keyword> honoured Kalam for his contribution to science, education and politics. Since then, October 15 is observed as World Student’s Day. </li><li>Four years ago, the Delhi government rolled out an education scheme Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Higher Education and Skill Education Guarantee Scheme — which aimed to extend education loans of upto ₹1 million to students. </li><li>According to him, the students should acquire two certificates from their school education — the highschool passing certificate and a skill-based achievement certificate.</li></ul>APJ Abdul Kalam wore many hats. Initially, the aerospace engineer was known as a <keyword id="445273" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Missile-Man">missile man</keyword> for his contribution to the development of ballistic missiles. But the scientist is better known for his views and work to develop the quality of education in India. He was in fact one of the first to recognize the need for skill development initiatives. The man who made progress across space technology, aeronautics, metallurgy and more--loved to spend time with children. One of his many heartwarming acts as a President is to cancel the traditional Iftar party and send the food to orphanages instead. He also designed lightweight prosthetics from space-age material which will help disabled children walk, and cycle too. In 2010, the United Nations honoured the man popularly known ‘People’s President’ and turned his birthday, October 15 into <a href="https://www.ndtv.com/india-news/world-students-day-2019-why-is-it-celebrated-on-apj-abdul-kalams-birth-anniversary-2116518">World Student’s Day.</a> “When learning is purposeful creativity blossoms, when creativity blossoms, thinking emanates. When thinking emanates, knowledge is fully lit. When knowledge is lit, economy flourishes,” Dr Kalam had famously said. Four years ago, the Delhi government also rolled out an <a href="https://www.indiatoday.in/education-today/featurephilia/story/a.p.j.-abdul-kalams-expectations-from-the-indian-education-system-285156-2015-07-28">education scheme</a> called Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Higher Education and Skill Education Guarantee Scheme — which extends education loans of upto ₹1 million to students. Nourish them with skill-based learning Kalam believed in nourishing the country’s education system with skill-based learning. According to him, students should acquire two certificates — the highschool passing certificate and a skill-based achievement certificate. He had said that the school curriculum should emphasise on special training programmes to enhance skills which help find a job, and understand industry culture. "Teachers have to realize that they are the builders of the society. The society can be built only when the students are made proficient in their subjects. In addition, they have to provide a vision for life to students and also inculcate the fundamentals of values which he should practice in the years to come," he said. He promoted inculcating inquiry, creativity, technology, entrepreneurial and moral leadership in students. “If we develop in all our students these five capacities, we will produce an ‘autonomous learner’ a self-directed, self controlled, lifelong learner, who will have the capacity to both respect authority and at the same time is capable of questioning authority, in an appropriate manner,” he said.

The missile man who gave young Indians wings of fire and burning ambition

<ul><li>The puppy had reportedly been crying for help for two days.</li><li>The rescuer put together a device that is primarily a combination of a drone and a robotic claw.</li><li><keyword id="4660322" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="milind-raj">Milind Raj</keyword>, the rescuer, has since adopted the puppy and named him 'Lifted'.</li></ul>Not all superheroes wear capes, and a great example of such a hero is Milind Raj who took it upon himself to help a puppy that had been stuck in a filthy drain for two days. We spoke to the 27-year old from Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, learning the details of what happened. While on a walk, Milind heard the desperate cries of the poor creature and upon investigation located the source of the distress which was a filthy drain. Upon further inquiry, the people who lived in the area told him that they have been hearing these "loud cries" for over two days, suggesting that he just leave the puppy where it is, as rescuing it would be an impossible task. The drain would be both unsanitary and unsafe for humans to enter. Lucky for the puppy, Raj is an innovator and tech-entrepreneur, and owns a company called Tech Monda. He decided to put his technical prowess to test by quickly putting together a device that will help him get the animal out of there.  In his lab, he put together a device that is primarily a combination of a drone that he built two years back and a robotic claw, which he built from scratch just to rescue the puppy. Incidentally, the drone was launched by the late President Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. The AI-enabled claw helped him monitor the puppy’s heart rate, so that he could tell if it has grasped too hard. Indian man builds a robotic arm to save puppy trapped in a drain

<keyword id="1826774" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="former-Indian-President">Former Indian President</keyword> <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=APJ+Abdul+Kalam">Dr A P J Abdul Kalam</a> died in <keyword id="57704" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Shillong">Shillong</keyword> on Monday. That was about the same day, when India experienced a bout of terrorism in Punjab. Was it something of a coincidence? Kalam, the peace keeper was igniting minds about making earth a liveable place at a seminar, as per his last tweet; and a few thousand kilometres away, a society was disintegrating itself with a terror strike. 
 
Kalam spoke the language of peace. But, his work as a scientist often contradicted his words. Why did he work on building missiles and play an instrumental role in Pokhran Test Range second time around, as part of India’s nuclear programme in 1998? His words on peace, that came much later, didn’t seem to resonate the spirit with this incident. However, this is where people didn’t read his intention as well as they saw his gestures. 
 
He was someone who believed in self-defence. A country that was well-defended with latest technology didn’t have to fear anyone. Believing in peace was his innate faith, but that didn’t mean he would sit without preparing for any eventualities should the enemies strike at once. 
 
His road to the Rashtrapati Bhavan, to don the chair of 11 th President of India between 2002 and 2007 was more or less apolitical. He had worked with various governments and had no enemies across partylines. A scientist to the core, Kalam was a people’s man through every second of his existence. 
 
No sooner did the news of his death break on the internet, social networks went berserk. In the days where role models are few and clean images even fewer, Dr Kalam was someone who was not only rare to find, but also difficult to contain. His charisma and aura was a challenge to anybody who believed personal brand building was an exercise to be done by PR agencies. 
 
His demeanour was spirited, honest and forthcoming. There has hardly been any other politician in the recent times who has been as popular and as interactive. 
 
Kalam had a rare gift. He was untiring when it came to imparting his experience to anyone who cared to listen. His core audience was young minds. He loved being amidst them, administer them an oath of honesty and integrity, make them say they would never indulge in corruption and ensure tomorrow’s India was at least aware of the ill effects of corruption. 
 
Majority of the students and persons who posted on social media soon after his death had only praises for him. While it is normal for people to sing praises about the dead, it is imperative to know Kalam was among those rare people who genuinely left a feeling of loss and void among people’s hearts. At 83, he was sprightly and focused. 
 
An author of several books, Kalam was deeply obliging of people who wanted some moments with him. A picture here, a signed copy of a book there, a lecture someone else, a closely interactive meeting with someone who sought his time; Kalam hardly turned anyone down unless he was pressed for time. 
 
Though <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=NDA">NDA </a>led by <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=BJP+">BJP </a>put forth his name for the President, Kalam had no enemies in the then Opposition party of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Congress+">Congress </a>at all. He was NDA's poster boy of sorts since he had just completed Pokhran II to bring laurels to the then Prime Minister <keyword id="47100" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Atal-Bihari-Vajpayee">Atal Bihari Vajpayee</keyword>. <keyword id="6366153" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Defence-Minister">Defence minister</keyword> <keyword id="2972300" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Geroge-Fernandes">Geroge Fernandes</keyword> was completely on his side and all the contributions he had to make, for India as a <keyword id="1435588" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Missile-scientist">missile scientist</keyword>. He was known as ‘Missile Man’ much against the soft person who lived inside him. 
 
He checked into Rashtrapathi Bhavan, the abode of the President of India and opened doors of this magnificent structure to the public. People could visit him, meet him and talk to him with shortest of the formalities. He mainly responded to children with utmost keenness, even if they sent them a letter or a book, they were sure to get a response in return. 
 Monday when he died, almost every person on social media has a picture with him on some occasion or the other. Such was the reach of this man who never forgot his roots lie in that quaint village of <keyword id="194058" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ramanathapuram">Ramanathapuram</keyword> in Tamil Nadu. A south Indian who rose to the highest office, just for doing his job with utmost passion is a story that legends are made of. 
 
He died doing what he loved the best. Parting with his energy, his conviction, and commitment to integrity, and igniting minds with new ideas. He collapsed on the dais where he was delivering a lecture, and passed away probably at that instant, amidst keen young minds which were getting inspired to do something for the country.

 Tughlaq of Arts His famous play called ‘Tughlaq’ which portrayed the much-ridiculed Sultan of India, as an idealist who is disillusioned later. His plays and works bring in nativity, giving a new direction to Indian writings which were heavily influenced by Western ideals. The maverick made his acting and screenwriting debut in a Kannada movie, Samskara, which won first President’s Golden Lotus award. He became a director, a move which earned him maximum fame. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1974, Padma Bhushan in 1992 and the Jnanpith award in 1998. Fearless in the arts Girish Karnad was born in 1938, in the erstwhile Bombay Presidency. After earning his Bachelor of Arts degree in Mathematics and Statistics from Karnataka Arts College, Dharwad, he went to England and studied Philosophy, Politics and Economics at Magdalen, in Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar. He was also the president of the Oxford Union in 1963. Karnad’s works, like him, were fearless in political opinions often stirred debate. Despite death threats, he never wavered from voicing his bold views. “We are all born with a divine fire in us. Our efforts should be to give wings to this fire,” said Karnad as he lent voice to former president Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam’s famous book, ‘Wings of Fire’. The Prime Minister is one of the many who expressed sorrow at his demise. He tweeted, “Karnad will be remembered for his versatile acting across all mediums. He also spoke passionately about causes dear to him. His works will continue to become popular in the years to come. Saddened by his demise. May his soul rest in peace.”

The fearless voice of A P J Kalam, and veteran playwright Girish Karnad dies at 81

In a press conference in Delhi, India’s cricketing legend <keyword id="6359039" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sourav-Ganguly">Sourav Ganguly</keyword> shared some memories about the recently deceased <keyword id="2971682" type="POSITION" weightage="100" keywordseo="11th-president">11th President</keyword> of India, <keyword id="2972947" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="A-P-J-Abdul-Kalam">A. While he didn’t know much of cricket, we explained to him how 11 players can play with a single ball. Anil(Kumble) asked him about his area of expertise.” 
 When asked if he had some particularly fond memories of the <keyword id="41551" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="science">Science</keyword> Wiz, the Maharaj of Indian cricket smiled, “I received the Padma Shree from him. He’s definitely one of the most down to earth persons I’ve met. Its startling how one could hold the highest civilian post in a country, yet connect to the masses so well. All of us have to leave once, but it’s about how you go. I think because of the way he served the country, he died where he belongs - among students.”

India has had a long history of the planning but rarely do we do proper envisioning exercises. Envisioning is necessary as it motivates people and all the institutions in society towards a common and often a shared cause. Dr. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=A.P.J+Abdul+Kalam">A.P.J Abdul Kalam</a> was a great man precisely due to his ability to articulate a vision and get people involved in it to try and successfully fulfil that vision. S. Rajan</a>. The vision was inspired by an idea to create a developed India by 2020. Skeptics said and still say that it was an impossible dream and what is the merit in undertaking such a project? The purpose of a dream is not in just its fulfilment but also in what one achieves in the process of fulfilling the dream. While India may not become developed by 2020 what matters is we have achieved more than we would if India would not have envisioned in the first place. The former president Dr. Kalam's vision certainly fuelled and became the inspiration for citizens and institutions working towards a common cause. Progress is something that is increment but has to be constantly measured and benchmarked. 
 
TIFAC recently has released a draft document for titled <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Technology">Technology</a> Vision 2035 for India. The vision of the draft Technology Vision 2035 document is to map the agenda for India's future in the domains of science, technology and innovation. The twelve broad areas include education, medical sciences &amp; healthcare, food and agriculture, water, energy, environment, habitat, transportation, infrastructure, manufacturing, materials and information and communication technologies. The 'Lifescape' document shows the life a citizen of India could have in 2035. While all the projections and plans may not come out the way in which they are planned it certainly serves as a good benchmark as well as an inspiration for Indian citizens. 
 
Dr. Kalam wanted India to be a knowledge superpower. The TIFAC team has done a great job in articulating technology vision India 2035. It is our duty as citizens of India to provide them with inputs for bettering these documents. It is also imperative that we go through the documents because knowledge cannot be the sole repository of a few. The tyranny of experts and policymakers can only be reduced when the masses understand it, and there is active public engagement. Media's role is also to highlight these documents. At present, there is barely any media coverage on these. Greater dissemination of these documents will also take us one step closer to Dr. Kalam's developmental vision.

“Dream is not that which you see while sleeping, it is something that does not let you sleep.” Dr APJ Abdul <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=kalam">Kalam</a>, India’s 11th President who taught the youth of the country to weave beautiful dreams to attain success in life, passed away while delivering lecture at <keyword id="698776" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Institute-of-Management-Shillong">Indian Institute of Management Shillong</keyword> on Monday evening. 
 
Popularly known as ‘the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=MISSILE+MAN">Missile Man</a> of India’, Kalam suddenly collapsed while delivering a lecture on 'Livable <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=planet">Planet</a>' at the management institute. The 83-year-old was immediately wheeled into Bethany hospitals' ICU in a critical condition and was confirmed dead after more than two hours. 
 
The country’s first bachelor President, who was a career scientist turned reluctant politician, ruled over a million hearts as he was one amongst the most respected people of the country. 
 
Kalam was born and raised in Tamil Nadu’s Rameswaram; and after studying physics and aerospace engineering, he had spent the next four decades as a scientist and science administrator, mainly at the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=drdo">DRDO </a>and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=isro">ISRO</a>. 
 He played a major role in India's civilian space program and military missile development efforts, and that is why he was regarded as ‘the <keyword id="1502002" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Missile-Man-of-India">Missile Man of India</keyword>.’ Kalam also played a pivotal organisational, technical and political role in India's <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=POKHRAN">Pokhran</a>-II nuclear tests that was conducted in 1998. And for his stupendous work, he received several prestigious awards, including the Bharat Ratna which is India's highest civilian honour.

​India mourns the demise of 'People's President'

A sea of humanity converged in <keyword id="6354932" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Rameswaram">Rameswaram</keyword> in Tamil Nadu and bade final adieu to the most beloved former Indian President <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=APJ+Abdul+Kalam">A P J Abdul Kalam</a>, who passed away due to cardiac arrest at the age of 83. 
 
<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Narendra+Modi">Prime Minister Narendra Modi</a>, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=manohar+parrikar">Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar</a>, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Venkaiah Naidu reached the southern city along with other political and apolitical personalities and attended the funeral. 
 
As tears welled up eyes, with a heavy heart Dr Kalam was laid to rest. 
 
Mortal remains of Kalam were brought to his hometown on July 29 and people came out in huge numbers to pay their tributes. 
The government has declared national mourning of seven days. 
 
 
Security has been tightened in and around Rameswaram. 
 
The '<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=missile+man">Missile Man</a>' led the weaponisation of strategic missile systems and the Pokhran-II nuclear tests in collaboration with Department of Atomic Energy, which made India a nuclear weapon state. 
 
The People's President guided ballistic missiles project, nuclear weapons programme and the Light Combat Aircraft(LCA) project. 
 
The former President made significant contribution in developing India's first indigenous Satellite Launch Vehicle (SLV-III) which successfully injected the Rohini <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=satellite">satellite</a> in the near earth orbit in July 1980 after which the country became an exclusive member of the space club. 
 
Kalam, who used to sell newspapers, was also behind the evolution of Indian Space Research Organisation's launch vehicle programme, particularly <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=PSLV">PSLV</a> configuration. 
 
He was very popular among schoolchildren. He used to say <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=teacher">teaching</a> was his passion, and he spent his last moments among the students doing what he loved most. 
Dr Kalam passed away on July 28 at a hospital in Shillong. He had collapsed while giving a lecture at <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=IIM+Shillong">IIM-Shillong</a>.

The public interest litigation petition filed by scientistV Ponraj, associated with former president Kalam for 20 years,sought a direction to the Centre and the state government tosubmit an action plan to ramp up the testing for coronavirus. The petitioner sought report on the number of RT-PCR(reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction) testingequipment available in labs in the universities and otherresearch institutions in the country.When the PIL came up for hearing before a division benchof Justices Vineet Kothari and Pushpa Sathyanarayana throughvideo conference, the court issued notice to the Union andstate governments directing them to file counter affidavits byand posted the matter for further hearing to May 12.The petitioner submitted that at present only around 367PCR labs under the Indian Council of Medical Research werebeing used for testing samples, with 1,814 samples each bythem per day. He said in Tamil Nadu alone there were about 126 RT-PCR/qPCR Labs where RNA/DNA research was pursued. The numberof similar labs in the country and ICMR labs can add up to1,000 in which case 3.76 lakh tests can be done per day. The petitioner said the Tamil Nadu government need notwait for the Central government for the Rs 1,000 crore forpurchase of PCR machines and can utilise the 126 labs, hesaid. NVGVS VS

New Delhi, Apr 5 () The India Islamic Cultural Centre on Sunday urged all religious scholars and leaders to appeal to citizens not to visit places of worship during the lockdown period, saying the situation arising out of the coronavirus pandemic is "unprecedented" and tough times call for tough measures. In a statement issued by the organisation's vice president, S M Khan, all stakeholders were asked to show "complete discipline" and refrain from activities which can cause damage to the dedicated efforts of the government.The statement from the office-bearer of the four-decade-old organisation, which was set up to promote mutual understanding and amity amongst the people of the country, came after reports of some patients taken for quarantine from Tablighi Jamaat headquarters in Nizamuddin allegedly misbehaving with the medical staff.Khan, an Indian Information Services officer who had served as the press secretary to the then President A P J Abdul Kalam and was also the face of the country's premier probe agency CBI for over a decade, said the current situation is "unprecedented"."Tough times call for tough measures and this is exactly what our Prime Minister (Narendra Modi) has done by ensuring a complete lockdown which was imperative to tackle this pandemic," he said, calling everyone to fight the "common enemy together".Khan thanked all essential service providers who are ensuring continuity of supplies and especially saluted the medical professionals who are taking care of those affected and also the police/administrative personnel and media for doing a remarkable job."I take this opportunity to request all religious scholars and leaders to appeal to citizens not to visit places of worship during the lockdown period...stay safe and take care!" The mission was carried out by DRDO. The satellite used during the test was the one present in India’s lower orbit. What are anti-satellites weapons Anti-satellites are space weapons designed to incapacitate or destroy satellites for strategic military purposes. There are only four countries in the world with this capability — the US, China, Russia and now India. These weapons can allow a country to attack enemy satellite by blinding them or disrupting their communication. They also provide a technical base for intercepting ballistic missiles. They are also helpful in bringing down spy satellites. India can now hit satellites at long ranges with a few centimeters accuracy, said Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) chairman G Satheesh Reddy told news agency ANI. However, India has not directed the test against any country. The Ministry said the test was done in the lower atmosphere to ensure that there were no space debris. "Whatever debris that is generated will decay and fall back onto the earth within weeks." On why was the test done now, the statement said it was done after India had acquired the required degree of confidence to ensure its success and it reflected the intention of the government to enhance India's national security.
