<ul><li>The Indian government bringing nearly 1,300 engineers onboard for the Kashmir valley’s metro project. </li><li>They are hiring professionals trained in architecture, telecommunications, traffic management, signal electronics and civil engineers. </li><li>The move comes days after the government’s decision of scrapping Section 370 — which has bifurcated the ‘state’ in two Union Territories — <keyword id="17605" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jammu-and-kashmir">Jammu and Kashmir</keyword>, and Ladakh. </li></ul>The Indian government is bracing to ‘reorganise’ Jammu and Kashmir. The centre said that it will hire as many as 1,300 engineers for the valley’s first metro project, in a move that will boost infrastructure as well as employment. The project will hire across domains like architecture, telecommunications, traffic management, signal electronics and civil engineering, TOI<a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/srinagar-metro-to-absorb-1300-engineers-others/articleshow/70579874.cms"> reported</a>. This is good news for the heavily qualified yet unemployed youth in the state. According to the Directorate of Employment, around 150,000 postgraduates and doctorates in Jammu &amp; Kashmir are jobless. Cheaper metro fares The 25 km long metro will connect Indira Nagar to HMT Junction and Hamzuri Bagh to Osmanabad through Srinagar. The fares of this metro will also be cheaper at 1.5 times that of a bus — unlike other metros across the country. The metro project is expected to cost ₹5,108 crore — and nearly 21% of it will be funded by the centre. The Jammu and Kashmir government will also infuse equal amount into the project. Once operational, the government is expecting a return of investment of ₹146 crore from the project, in the first five years. “Revenue for the <keyword id="7960419" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Srinagar-Metro">Srinagar Metro</keyword> will mainly consist of farebox collection and non-fare box sources such as parking, taxes, advertisements, and property development,” TOI reported citing the Detailed Project Report (DPR) of Srinagar. In July, <keyword id="2773123" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Satya-Pal-Malik">Satya Pal Malik</keyword>, the Governor of Jammu and Kashmir government announced the ‘Light Rail Transit Systems’ for Jammu and Srinagar. <a href="https://www.greaterkashmir.com/news/kashmir/light-rail-transit-systems-for-srinagar-jammu-to-be-completed-in-four-to-five-years-govt/">Rail Indian Technical and Economic Services</a> (RITES) will take over the project. The tender is expected to be released by the end of August. Indian government to ‘reorganise’ Jammu and Kashmir — plans to hire 1,300 engineers for its first Metro project

Washington, As the world witnessed the <keyword id="10791194" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="historic-landing">historic landing</keyword> of NASA's <keyword id="9577365" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="perseverance-rover">Perseverance rover</keyword> on the Martian surface, it was Indian-American scientist, <keyword id="1322099" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Swati-Mohan">Swati Mohan</keyword>, who led the guidance, navigation, and control operations of the Mars 2020 mission. Mohan also confirmed that the rover had survived a particularly tricky plunge through the Martian atmosphere. "Touchdown confirmed," exclaimed Mohan, who emigrated from <keyword id="3658" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword> to the US when she was only a year old. She says the Guidance, Navigation, and Controls Operations (GN&amp;C) are "eyes and ears" of the spacecraft. Raised in Northern Virginia and Washington DC metro area, she completed her bachelor's degree from <keyword id="31781" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Cornell-University">Cornell University</keyword> in Mechanical &amp; Aerospace Engineering, and her M.S. and Ph.D from <keyword id="50375" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Massachusetts-Institute-of-Technology">Massachusetts Institute of Technology</keyword> (MIT) in Aeronautics/Astronautics. Over the course of her career with NASA, Mohan has worked on the Cassini mission to Saturn and GRAIL -- a pair of formation flown spacecraft to the <keyword id="42440" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Moon">Moon</keyword>, and has been a mainstay with the Mars 2020 mission since its beginning in 2013. According to the Mohan, her interest in space was peaked after watching the popular TV show Star Trek when she was 9. "Seeing the beautiful depictions of the new regions of the universe that they were exploring. I remember thinking 'I want to do that. I want to find new and beautiful places in the universe.' The vastness of space holds so much knowledge that we have only begun to learn," she had told NASA. Mohan noted that her passion for space increased further when she took her first physics class. "I was lucky enough to have a great teacher, and everything was so understandable and easy. That was when I really considered engineering, as a way to pursue space," she added. Commenting on her team's role in the current mission, Mohan said during the cruise phase heading toward Mars, their job is to figure out how the spacecraft is oriented, and make sure it is pointed correctly in space -- "solar arrays to sun, antenna to Earth, and maneuver the spacecraft to get it where we want to go." She said during the "seven minutes of terror" leading to the entry, descent, and landing on Mars, GN&amp;C determines the position of the spacecraft and commands the maneuvers to help it land safely. "As the team's operations lead, I am the primary point of communication between the GN&amp;C subsystem and the rest of the project. "I am responsible for the training of the GN&amp;C team, scheduling the mission control staffing for GN&amp;C, as well as the policies/procedures the GN&amp;C uses in the mission control room," Mohan noted. Meet Swati Mohan, the Indian-American scientist who helped NASA land rover on Mars

It’s a welcome move by <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Home+Minister+Rajnath+Singh+">Home Minister Rajnath Singh</a> who would soon propose that the 100 'Smart Cities' should be developed as 'Safe Cities' with the help of the latest security equipment like CCTVs, command control centers, patrol cars, aerial surveillance and more women cops. 
 
The 100 <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=%E2%80%98Smart+Cities%E2%80%99+">‘Smart Cities’</a> project announced by the <keyword id="71" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Prime-Minister">prime minister</keyword> last month is the part of a government flagship programme. 
 <keyword id="6355121" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Rajnath-Singh">Rajnath Singh</keyword> will make a proposal to the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Urban+Development+Ministry+">Urban Development Ministry</a> that the former's 'Safe City' project should be combined with the Rs 48,000 crore 'Smart Cities' concept so that the 100 cities could be made smart as wells as safe from crime or terror. 
 The present 'Safe City' project of the MHA covers only seven metros - Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata, Bengaluru and Ahmedabad. The MHA now proposes to cover all 100 'Safe Cities' under the concept in association with the <keyword id="6696781" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Urban-development-ministry">Urban Development Ministry</keyword>. 
 
Rajnath Singh chaired a meeting in this regard with MoS Home <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Kiren+Rijiju">Kiren Rijiju</a>, the <keyword id="123228" type="POSITION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Director-General">Director General</keyword> of <keyword id="3043518" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="40" keywordseo="Bureau-of-Police-Research-and-Development-NR-Wasan">Bureau of Police Research and Development NR Wasan</keyword> and MHA <keyword id="230912" type="POSITION" weightage="60" keywordseo="security-advisor">Security Advisor</keyword> <keyword id="3043517" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="40" keywordseo="K-Vijay-Kumar">K. Vijay Kumar</keyword> on Monday. "The smart cities need to be safe cities as well. We are planning to propose the same for planning in advance," Rijiju told ET. 
 
Last month, the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=%E2%80%98Smart+Cities%E2%80%99+">Prime Minister</a> had announced names of 98 cities which will be specially developed as 'Smart Cities' as part of a government flagship project, with one nomination of a city pending from Uttar Pradesh and J&amp;K each. 
 "The idea is that MHA and <keyword id="81069" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="UD-ministry">UD Ministry</keyword> should not work in isolation on each of its projects and it is better that MHA works with UD on the latter's project rather than planning for the safety of the cities subsequently," a MHA official said. 
 
The 'Smart City' concept involves promoting mixed land use in area based developments, housing and inclusiveness, creating walkable localities, promoting a variety of transport options and giving an identity to the city based on its main economic activity.
