<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="6360409" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="nasa" source="Orion">NASA</keyword>'s Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (<keyword id="12703280" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="ixpe" source="Orion">IXPE</keyword>) launched into <keyword id="11895441" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="space" source="Orion">space</keyword> early on Thursday morning.</li><li>The IXPE was launched by a <keyword id="11908743" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="spacex" source="Orion">SpaceX</keyword> <keyword id="12067647" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="falcon-9" source="Orion">Falcon 9</keyword> rocket, NASA said in a statement.</li></ul><p>A NASA satellite designed to examine some of the most fascinating objects in the cosmos, including <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/black-hole-how-big-largest-universe-2019-5">black holes,</a> was successfully launched into orbit by a SpaceX <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/spacex-launches-falcon-9-rocket-booster-for-record-breaking-9th-time-2021-3">Falcon 9</a> rocket, NASA said in a <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/press-release/nasa-launches-new-mission-to-explore-universe-s-most-dramatic-objects">press statement</a>.</p><p>The Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) observatory is a spacecraft developed by NASA in collaboration with the Italian Space Agency. It carries three telescopes designed to measure the polarization of X-rays from high-energy celestial objects. These include black holes and the remnants of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/super-kamiokande-neutrino-detector-is-unbelievably-beautiful-2018-6">supernovas</a>.</p><p>This means it will be able to probe the physics behind these mysterious objects.</p><p>"IXPE is going to show us the violent universe around us — such as exploding <keyword id="12206001" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="stars" source="Orion">stars</keyword> and the black holes at the center of galaxies — in ways we've never been able to see it," Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator for the Science Mission Directorate at NASA's headquarters in Washington, said in a statement.</p><p>The IXPE was launched from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida at 1 a.m. EST on Thursday, NASA said in its statement. <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/spacex-launches-nasa-x-ray-telescope-in-companys-28th-launch-this-year/">CBS</a> reports the IXPE cost $214 million.</p><p>SpaceX shared footage on <a href="https://twitter.com/SpaceX/status/1468831567275380737">Twitter</a> of the IXPE separating from the Falcon 9 rocket, floating off into orbit</p><p>"It is an indescribable feeling to see something you've worked on for decades become real and launch into space," Martin Weisskopf, IXPE's principal investigator at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, said in a statement.</p><p><a href="https://www.space.com/spacex-launches-nasa-ixpe-x-ray-space-telescope">Space.com</a> reported that at a pre-launch press conference, Weisskopf said IXPE's first target will be the Crab Nebula, which is the remnants of a dead star.</p><div type="image" title="crab nebula green orange yellow web" height="2000" width="2000" msid="88188619" hostid="261"></div><p>SpaceX has flown multiple missions for NASA, including <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/watch-live-spacex-astronauts-return-from-space-station-2021-11">two fully crewed astronaut missions</a> to the International Space Station. </p><p>NASA also awarded SpaceX a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/spacex-nasa-contract-industry-reaction-blue-origin-space-moon-2021-4">$2.9 billion contract</a> in April to help the agency return to the moon. When it was finally ready to collect data, mission controllers pointed its mirrors at a supernova called Cassiopeia A — the vibrant, gas-cloud remains of a star that exploded in the 17th century.</p><p>The first image was released on Monday. The gas cloud is about 10 light-years wide. In visible light, it doesn't actually glow the stunning purple color depicted above. Somewhere in the center of those gas clouds, there's a super-dense object that formed when the former star's core collapsed. It could be a black hole or a neutron star.</p><p>IXPE is set to spend at least two years studying the most extreme and mysterious objects in the universe — nebulae, supernovas, neutron stars, and black holes. It's NASA's first major X-ray space telescope since the Chandra X-ray Observatory launched into orbit in 1999. That telescope's first image also captured Cassiopeia A.</p><p>"The IXPE image of Cassiopeia A is as historic as the Chandra image of the same supernova remnant," Martin C. Weisskopf, who leads the IXPE team at NASA, said in a <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/ixpe/news/nasa-s-ixpe-sends-first-science-image.html">press release</a>. That information can tell scientists a lot about how the X-rays are produced and allow them to see how radiation varies across the object they're studying. In this case, it could offer new peeks at what's happening inside those gas clouds and explain why they emit such powerful X-rays.</p><p>"The IXPE image of Cassiopeia A is bellissima, and we look forward to analyzing the polarimetry data to learn even more about this supernova remnant," Paolo Soffitta, the Italian IXPE team leader at the National Institute of Astrophysics (INAF) in Rome, said in the press release.</p><p>Now the IXPE team is working on using the telescope's data to build a map of polarized X-rays across the supernova cloud.</p>

As she neared the corner of the box nearest the right flank, she faked a shot and cut back to rip a shot from her non-dominant left foot.
