With the <keyword id="6356311" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="world-health-organisation" source="Orion">World Health Organisation</keyword> (WHO) declaring that Covid-19 is no longer a global emergency, medical device companies are likely to see a decrease in sales, according to a report on Tuesday.<br /><br />In the last three years of the pandemic, many medical device companies made billions through tests and pharmaceuticals.<br /><br />The report by data and analytics company <keyword id="1670029" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="globaldata" source="Orion">GlobalData</keyword> predicts that in the coming years, fewer new Covid-19 tests will be hitting the market; instead, existing tests will be improved. This could mean improving tests' specificity and sensitivity and creating multiparameter tests with existing technology.<br /><br />"Companies have reported decreasing sales of Covid-19 related products for the past two quarters. Therefore, having the Covid-19 pandemic declared over and instead an endemic virus, and with the emergency use authorisations on Covid-19 tests lifted, in vitro diagnostics (<keyword id="3175247" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="ivd" source="Orion">IVD</keyword>) companies are scrambling to minimise their losses," said <keyword id="17367396" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="selena-yu" source="Orion">Selena Yu</keyword>, <keyword id="17367395" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="medical-analyst" source="Orion">Medical Analyst</keyword> at GlobalData, in a statement.<br /><br />In vitro diagnostics (IVD) are tests done on samples such as blood or tissue that have been taken from the human body.<br /><br />Currently, there are 132 active clinical trials, out of 310 trials on infectious disease IVD devices, developing Covid-19 tests.<br /><br />In January 2023, many companies involved in Covid-19 tests, like <keyword id="229225" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="danaher" source="Orion">Danaher</keyword>, <keyword id="48168" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="abbott" source="Orion">Abbott</keyword>, <keyword id="248095" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="labcorp" source="Orion">Labcorp</keyword>, and Becton, <keyword id="292392" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="dickinson" source="Orion">Dickinson</keyword> and Company, also known as BD, made statements on their significant drops in Covid-19 tests.<br /><br />"Now that the pandemic has been announced to no longer be an emergency, the drops will become more significant in the coming months. Finalising the rules of origin for the <keyword id="6359358" type="General" weightage="70" keywordseo="medical-devices" source="Orion">medical devices</keyword> sector remains a sticking-point in the proposed free-trade agreement (FTA) between India and the UK and the talks are on to iron out the differences, an official said. Huge potential is there in the medical devices sector in India, as it imports about 80 per cent of its requirement, with the US, Germany, China, Singapore and Netherlands being top exporters of such devices to the country. <br /><br /> "In the medical devices sector, a lot of issues related to rules of origin are still there. Demand for customs duty concessions is also there," the official said, adding negotiations are going on between the two countries to resolve the differences in both goods and services sectors. <br /><br /> The government has taken steps to promote domestic manufacturing of medical devices/equipment and attract large investment in the sector. Such schemes/initiatives include Promotion of Medical Device Parks, National Biopharma Mission, and a production-linked Incentive scheme for the sector. <br /><br /> The six major categories of medical devices that are being mainly imported into the country include consumables, disposables, electronics and equipment, implants, IVD reagent and surgical instruments. <br /><br /> The 'rules of origin' provision prescribes minimal processing that should happen in the FTA country, so that the final manufactured product may be called originating goods in that country. <br /><br /> Under this provision, a country that has inked an FTA with India cannot dump goods from some third country in the Indian market by just putting a label on it. It has to undertake a prescribed value addition in that product to export to India. Rules of origin norms help contain dumping of goods. <br /><br /> According to experts, India should refrain from giving duty concessions, as the government here is promoting domestic manufacturing of these devices. <br /><br /> "India can consider giving relaxations for those equipment which are not manufactured in India," Rajinder Singh Kanwar from Export Promotion Council For Medical Devices said. <br /><br /> The negotiations between the two countries for the agreement cover as many as 26 policy areas/chapters. Investment is being negotiated as a separate agreement (bilateral investment treaty) between India and the UK and it would be concluded simultaneously with the free-trade agreement. <br /><br /> India is looking at greater market access for its pharmaceutical products in the UK, as part of the proposed agreement with Britain, the official added. <br /><br /> India has already secured greater market access for the domestic pharma industry in a trade pact with the UAE. Under the pact, Indian pharmaceutical products and medical goods will get regulatory approval within 90 days that have been approved in developed jurisdictions such as the US, the UK, the EU, Canada, and Australia. <br /><br /> Similarly, the India-Australia trade deal would provide fast-track approvals and quality assessment/inspections of manufacturing facilities. <br /><br /> "In pharma, we are looking at a positive outcome from the India-UK deal. Regulatory cooperation with the UK's Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency is also on the cards," the official said. <br /><br /> India and Britain launched negotiations for the free-trade agreement (FTA) in January with an aim to conclude talks by Diwali (October 24), but the deadline was missed due to political developments in the UK. <br /><br /> India's main exports to the UK include ready-made garments and textiles, gems and jewellery, engineering goods, petroleum and petrochemical products, transport equipment and parts, spices, metal products, machinery and instruments, pharma and marine items. <br /><br /> Major imports include precious and semi-precious stones, ores and metal scraps, engineering goods, professional instruments, non-ferrous metals, chemicals and machinery. <br /><br /> The UK is also a key investor in India. <br /><br /> The bilateral trade between India and the UK increased to USD 20.36 billion in 2022-23 from USD 17.5 billion in 2021-22.

The PoC solution can be used for screening at multiple sites including hospitals, airports, diagnostic labs and health camps.<br /><br />“Scientists from Genes2Me have been able to develop POX-Q Multiplexed RT-PCR kit for the detection of Monkeypox virus along with differentiation from Varicella Zoster Virus (Chicken Pox) in a single tube multiplex reaction format,” says the company in a statement.<br /><br />It is one of the first Indian companies to roll out this product and it is available for research-use only and based on Gold standard Taqman chemistry based RT PCR method. <br /><br />“This unprecedented time underscores the importance of diagnostic assays in health security preparedness and readiness. However, it can be scaled up to 2 million tests in a day with the added demand.” <br /><br />In the backdrop, the makers of TrueNat real-time polymerase chain reaction, which is the only PoC platform used by the <keyword id="43588" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="world-health-organization" source="Orion">World Health Organization</keyword> (WHO) to detect tuberculosis, is also developing the test kit for monkeypox, indicated government sources.<br /><br />Trivitron Healthcare, a Chennai-based medical devices company, also developed a real-time RT-PCR-based kit for the detection of the monkeypox virus. The company says that its test kit can differentiate between smallpox and monkeypox in a one-tube single reaction format. <br /><br />Last week, the WHO declared Monkeypox as a ‘public health emergency of international concern’. Indian company rolls out RT PCR test kit for Monkeypox

New Delhi, Apr 4 () The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) on Saturday issued an advisory to start rapid antibody based blood tests for COVID-19 in areas reporting clusters and in large migration gatherings or evacuee centres.<p>The decision for recommending these tests was taken at an emergency meeting of the National Task Force held recently.</p><p>The move comes in the wake of the country reporting 3072 COVID-19 cases including 75 deaths so far.</p><p>The results of antibody tests similar to blood tests are available in 15-30 minutes.  </p><p>"Cases of influenza-like illness to be monitored in health facilities. Any surge in cases to be monitored and brought to the notice of surveillance officer/CMO for additional investigation," the advisory said.  </p><p>As a matter of abundant precautions, all symptomatic persons with influenza-like illness should be advised home quarantine for 14 days. At facility level, symptomatic individuals with influenza-like illness to be tested using rapid antibody tests, the apex health research body said in its advisory.</p><p>If antibody test comes out negative, then if warranted, it can be confirmed by real-time RT-PCR using throat/nasal swab.</p><p>At present, the government uses the RT-PCR (polymerase chain reaction) tests to detect the coronavirus from samples of throat or nasal swab of people with symptoms or high-risk individuals who might have come in contact with a positive patient. </p><p>RT-PCR negative indicates the likelihood of a non-COVID-19 influenza-like illness while RT-PCR positive means it is a confirmed case and action as per protocol should be initiated for isolation, treatment and contact tracing, the advisory stated.</p><p>If the antibody test comes out to be positive, there has to be a clinical assessment and treatment in hospital or isolation as per protocol. </p><p>Action as per protocol should be initiated for contact tracing. </p><p>"If symptoms worsen, refer to designated COVID-19 hospitals. When home quarantine is not feasible, consider facility-based quarantine," the advisory stated.</p><p>It also listed some general guidelines according to which healthcare workers doing the rapid antibody test should use gloves, mask, and head covers.</p><p>Healthcare workers collecting throat/nasal swab should follow standard national infection control guidelines, it said. </p><p>The rapid antibody tests approved by US-FDA/CE-IVD or non-CE-IVD validated by ICMR-NIV with marketing approval by DCGI should be used.</p><p>In order to ensure that all such cases are monitored and necessary action is initiated with respect to infectious disease management, details of all test results shall be uploaded in ICMR portal.</p>"All such organisations are duty bound to register themselves to ICMR portal and upload the data in real-time. Failure to do so, they will be held liable to action under Disaster Management Act, 2005," the advisory stated.  PLB  ZMN

New Delhi, March 25 () Lockdown across the country to curb the spread of coronavirus is resulting in drugs and medical devices not reaching the hospitals and consumers despite them being exempted by the government, industry players said on Wednesday.<p> Avoidable restrictions have been imposed by local police on the mobility of the citizens associated with the supply, distributions and transport of medicines, raw materials, components to make masks, sanitizers and other medical devices to the factories and manufacturing plants which are holding up production, adding to shortage, AiMeD Forum Coordinator Rajiv Nath said in a statement.</p><p> Pharmaceutical and medical device manufacturers are also facing issues as some of the district administrations in various states/ UTs have incorrectly given directions to close the manufacturing operations in the pharmaceutical and medical device industry also as part of various measures to contain the spread of coronavirus, AiMeD said.</p><p> "We on behalf of the Indian Medical Device Industry appeal to local administration and police to recognise that medicines, raw materials, components to make masks, sanitizers and other medical devices like gloves, consumables, disposables, electronics, equipments, instruments, implants and IVD reagents are most essential healthcare delivery products at this critical hour of crisis," Nath said.</p><p> So, the authorities are requested to extend support and give free passage to the people in the supply chain of essential commodities to reach factories, manufacturing plants, among others, he added.</p><p> In this regard, the Department of Pharmaceuticals (DoP) has written to the chief secretaries of all state/ UTs to review the matter and issue directions for treating these activities as essential services and also direct the authorities concerned to make necessary arrangements for issuance IDs/ entry pass so as to facilitate movements of the workers engaged in these essential activities.</p><p> "Further, in cases where inter-state movements of workers are involved, you may sort the matter with your counterpart in the state concerned, so that the pharma/ medical devices factories function without any hindrance," the letter said.</p><p> In similar vein, in a regulatory filing, Suven Pharmaceuticals said, "Even though pharma manufacturing is exempted from this lockdown situation, there are many obstacles which we are encountering, namely no movement of goods interstate nor intrastate."</p> This has caused a shortage of raw materials and prevented the company from being able to export finished products. To compound the situation, the government agencies at the seaports and airports are not operating to inspect and clear those finished goods, the letter by Suven Group of Companies Venkat Jasti to customers and shareholders said. New Delhi, May 13 () The ICMR on Thursday issued revised guidance document on rapid antibody test kits for COVID-19 and listed the firms whose kits have been validated and found satisfactory.<p>The apex health research body had issued on Wednesday night a guidance document in which two Chinese firms -- Guangzhou Wondfo Biotech and Zhuhai Livzon Diagnostics -- whose importer's licenses were cancelled by the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation last month, found a mention among the list of companies, test kits of whose, have been validated at the National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune so far.</p><p>The document, however, was taken down from the website in the morning and a revised one was uploaded later.</p><p>The revised document also mentions the two Chinese firms, but states that "the marketing licenses to the distributors of these two companies have been cancelled by the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO)."</p><p>The health research body, however, underlined that such rapid antibody test are not recommended for diagnosis of coronavirus infection. It had earlier said that such test kits are to be used only for surveillance purpose.</p><p>"Till date, 42 antibody-based rapid tests have been validated, and the following were found to be satisfactory. Ten of these kits are manufactured in India," the ICMR said in the revised guidance document.</p><p>"These rapid antibody test kits have been validated in the laboratory. However, the performance of the kits may be subject to variation under field conditions," the ICMR underlined.  </p><p>According to the guidance document, the rapid tests can be done on blood/serum/plasma samples and the result is available within 30 minutes.</p><p>"The test may remain positive for several weeks after infection. A positive test indicates exposure to SARS-CoV-2 while a negative test does not rule out COVID-19 infection," the ICMR said.</p><p>The list of kits includes COVID-19 IgM IgG Rapid Test: BioMedomics (CE-IVD); New Coronavirus (COVID-19) IgG/IgM Rapid Test: Voxtur Bio Ltd, India; Makesure COVID-19 Rapid test: HLL Lifecare Limited, Indi; Abchek COVID-19 IgM/IgG Antibody Rapid Test: NuLifecare and; One Step COVID-19 IgM/IgG Antibody: SIDAK Life Care Pvt. Ltd. </p><p>The list also mentions the batch numbers of the kits.</p><p>The Centre on April 27 had said that it has "not lost a single rupee" with respect to the supplies of the COVID-19 rapid antibody test kits while cancelling the shipment of the equipment from two Chinese companies after those were found to be "under-performing". </p><p>In an advisory sent to chief secretaries of all states and Union Territories, the ICMR had said that it "evaluated the kits of Guangzhou Wondfo Biotech and Zhuhai Livson Diagnostics in field conditions. The results have shown wide variation in their sensitivity, despite an early promise of good performance for surveillance purpose".</p>The testing technique is used to detect antibodies in the blood of people who may have had novel coronavirus infection. <p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><ul><li style="text-align: left;"><strong>A New York Times senior opinion editor published an op-ed arguing that yoga pants are bad for women.&#xa0;</strong></li><li style="text-align: left;"><strong>Women overwhelmingly did not agree.&#xa0;</strong></li></ul><p>&#xa0;</p><p>The New York Times published an op-ed slamming yoga pants - and people aren't too pleased with the publication.&#xa0;</p><p>On Sunday, The Times published an&#xa0;op-ed written by senior opinion editor Honor Jones with the headline:&#xa0;<a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2018/02/17/opinion/sunday/yoga-pants-sweatpants-women.html">"Why Yoga Pants Are Bad for Women."</a>&#xa0;</p><p>"We may be able to conquer the world wearing spandex," Jones wrote. "But wouldn't it be easier to do so in pants that don't threaten to show every dimple and roll in every woman over 30?"&#xa0;</p><p>Overwhelmingly readers responded saying, no, in fact, life without yoga pants would not be easier. In fact, most people - especially women - saw the argument as simply absurd, and they took to social media to say just that.&#xa0;</p><p>The crux of Jones' argument is that women wear yoga pants to be sexy, something that should not be expected of anyone while they're working out.&#xa0;</p><p>But women provided many other reasons to wear yoga pants and leggings - namely, that they're comfortable and practical.&#xa0;</p><p>"Somehow you are missing the point of how much easier it is to run, to contort, to move in any way, with pants that are streamlined," <a href="https://www.facebook.com/nytopinion/posts/2071610576187221?comment_id=2071630866185192&amp;comment_tracking=%7B%22tn%22%3A%22R9%22%7D">reads the top comment </a>on The New York Times' Facebook post about the article.&#xa0;</p><p>While Jones frames her argument as a pro-women, feminist take, many saw the anti-yoga-pants op-ed as part of a larger trend of demonizing anything feminine.&#xa0;</p><p>"Yoga pants, skin care, makeup, wine, romance novels, fashion - if it's *culturally coded* as something that brings relaxation and pleasure to women, somebody is out there writing about how it's secretly insidious," NPR's Linda Holmes tweeted.&#xa0;</p><p>Many criticized the publication for publishing something about yoga pants instead of focusing on more pressing issues, such as gun control.</p><p>Some were simply left begging people to read something else.</p><p>As is often the case on Twitter, the yoga pants debate began to spiral in unanticipated directions - including a <a href="https://twitter.com/knguyen/status/965255632101265408">(debunked) conspiracy </a>that Honor Jones wasn't even a real person.&#xa0;</p><p>Combing through responses on social media doesn't turn up many people willing to support Jones's argument.</p><p>Instead, people seem to agree with<a href="https://www.facebook.com/nytopinion/posts/2071610576187221?comment_id=2071721982842747&amp;comment_tracking=%7B%22tn%22%3A%22R9%22%7D"> another Facebook comment </a>on The Times' post: "So, how about we all just wear whatever appeals to us, and don't worry about what anyone else is wearing."</p><p class="tagline"></p><div id="categorypromo" style="border:1px solid silver; min-height:90px; padding:10px;vertical-align:top;box-sizing: content-box;"><a href="http://read.bi/retail-2018"></a><strong>EXCLUSIVE FREE SLIDE DECK:</strong><br>The Future of <keyword id="6354851" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Retail">Retail</keyword> 2018 by the BI Intelligence Research Team.<br><strong><a href="http://read.bi/retail-2018">Get the Slide Deck Now »</a></strong></br></br></div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div></div>    <div class="margin-top">        <h3>NOW WATCH: <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-go-new-store-retail-innovation-technology-2018-2">What it's really like inside Amazon's new no-line grocery store.</a></h3>        <div>                    </div>    </div></hr>
