July is here, and while we are still 5 months away from the end of 2024, the deadline to file your <keyword id="19897621" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ITR" source="keywords">ITR</keyword> is July 31st, which is looming large. While it is best to not "file away" filing your income tax returns for later, are you aware of the right ITR form that applies to you? Out of the 7 ITR forms available, how do you know which one is the right fit for you, and where to start? For starters, the first 4 ITR forms (ITR-1,2,3,4) are necessary for an individual to know about, while filing taxes. Lets decode all these forms in detail with Tanya, a 22 year old IT professional who earns Rs 10,000 per month. Her mother has a monthly rental income of Rs 12,000 per month. Will the two of them be required to file ITR? Well, the answer is no. You see, Tanya's <keyword id="21120362" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="annual-income" source="keywords">annual income</keyword> comes to about Rs 1,20,000, while her mother's total rental income comes to about Rs 2,40,000. If you opt for the old tax regime, you don't need to file an ITR if you annual income is below Rs 2.5 lakh. In the new regime, this limit stands at Rs 3 lakh. Similarly, if your grandparents are aged between 61-79, they need not file an ITR if their annual income (via rent, pensions) falls below Rs 3 lakh. She works super hard, and over the years, earns a few well deserved raises. Now, her monthly income is Rs 50,000. In this case, she will have to file ITR-1, which is also known as Sahaj. This form applies to you if your total annual income for the year does not exceed Rs 50,00,000. The best part? This form is generally pre-filled, and all you've got to do is verify the information through your <keyword id="22247325" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Form-16" source="keywords">Form-16</keyword> and Annual Information Statement (AIS). <h2>ITR-2 </h2>Over time, Tanya decides to start investing in mutual funds. While she holds most of her investments for the long-term, she is compelled to sell some units of her investment in equity mutual funds, due to a medical emergency at home. She had purchased some equity mutual fund units worth Rs 2,00,000 on April 1, 2023. Due to the emergency, she had to sell about Rs 80,000 worth of units in December of the same year. On redemption, she received Rs 1,10,000. Since she had held these securities for less than 12 months, Tanya would have to pay a short-term <keyword id="20301441" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="capital-gains-tax" source="keywords">capital gains tax</keyword> of 15%, Had Tanya held on to these securities for more than 12 months and then sold them at a gain, she'd have to pay long-term capital gains tax, which is applicable at 10% for equity mutual funds. And to account for such capital gains, be it from sale of shares, mutual funds, property or the like, Tanya needs to file ITR-2. <h2>ITR-3</h2>Tanya's brother, Vishal, is a freelancer who got hooked to trading in futures and options during the pandemic. Initially, he made solid profits, but during FY24, he ran into losses worth Rs 5 lakh. In this case, he will have to file ITR-3 to report his losses. This form is to be used by those who earn income under the head of profits (or even losses) of business or profession, other than regular salary. In case Tanya's mother starts receiving rental income from more than one house properties, she will also have to file ITR-3. Or, in case you are a CA, or a doctor and have your own practice (are self employed), this form is for you. <h2>ITR-4: Sugam </h2>This form is exclusively for those who opt to be taxed under the presumptive taxation scheme. You can opt for this scheme if you are a small business/firm and your annual turnover is less than Rs 3 crore, or you are self employed with an annual revenue of less than Rs 75 lakh. Under this, you don't pay taxes on your actual income, rather, you pay taxes on a presumed income. As per law, under this scheme, your net income will be considered as 6% of your total revenue, and you'll have to pay taxes on that. Here, you're really not calculating your income for taxation, and hence, it is not even mandatory to maintain records. The taxpayers and tax professionals made their compliances in time, leading to a surge in the filing of Income-tax Returns (<keyword id="20458564" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ITRs" source="keywords">ITRs</keyword>), which resulted in a new record of ITRs filed till <keyword id="22468495" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="July-31" source="keywords">July 31</keyword>, 2024. July 31 was the last due date for filing the <keyword id="19948101" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="income-tax-returns" source="keywords">income tax returns</keyword>, without having to pay any penalties. The total number of ITRs for assessment year 2024-25 filed till July 31, 2024 is more than 7.28 crore, which is 7.5% more than the total ITRs for assessment 2023-24 (6.77 crore) filed, a <keyword id="19908390" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ministry-of-Finance" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Ministry of Finance" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Ministry of Finance">Ministry of Finance</keyword> release stated on Friday. An increasing number of taxpayers have opted for the <keyword id="19935168" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="New-Tax-Regime" source="keywords">new tax regime</keyword> this year, the <keyword id="19900485" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="finance-ministry" source="keywords">finance ministry</keyword> said. Out of the total ITRs of 7.28 crore that have been filed, 5.27 crore have been filed in the new tax regime, as compared to 2.01 crore filed in the old tax regime. Thus, about 72% of taxpayers have opted for the new tax regime, while the rest 28% continue to be in the old tax regime. The filing of ITRs peaked on July 31, 2024 (due date for salaried taxpayers and other non-tax audit cases) with over 69.92 lakh ITRs being filed on a single day. The <keyword id="20404575" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="e-filing-portal" source="keywords">e-filing portal</keyword> also observed its highest per hour rate of 5.07 lakh of ITR filing between 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm on July 31. A total of 58.57 lakh ITRs from first time filers were reported, a fair indication of widening of tax base. "A lot of emphasis was provided to educate taxpayers about old and new tax regimes. FAQs and educational videos on the same were designed and uploaded on the e-filing portal," the ministry said. Focused outreach campaigns were carried out on social media to encourage the taxpayers to file their ITRs early. Along with this, unique creative campaigns were also carried out on different platforms. Informational videos in 12 vernacular languages, apart from English and Hindi, were displayed on digital platforms. The ministry said it is encouraging to note that over 6.21 crore ITRs have been e-verified, out of which more than 5.81 crore are through Aadhaar-based OTP (93.56% ). Of the e-verified ITRs, more than 2.69 crore ITRs for the 2024-2025 have been processed (43.34%) till July 31, 2024. Note that e-verification is the final step in filing your ITR. If you do not e-verify your ITR within 30 days of filing it, your ITR will stand invalid. The e-filing Helpdesk team has handled approximately 10.64 lakh queries from taxpayers during the year up to July 31, supporting the taxpayers proactively during the peak filing period. Taxpayers are also requested to verify their unverified ITRs if any, within 30 days of filing the ITR. Taxpayers are urged, who for any reason, missed filing their ITR within the due date, to complete their filing expeditiously.

Filing returns would now be simpler and more efficient for taxpayers with new <keyword id="2226237" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="ITR-forms">ITR forms</keyword>, including a three-page simplified one, <keyword id="6354751" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Income-Tax">Income Tax</keyword> department notified today. The With government dropped the earlier forms after it attracted criticism for seeking numerous additional details like that of filers' foreign travel and about dormant bank accounts. With the <keyword id="25455" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="finance">Finance</keyword> Ministry publishing the gazette order yesterday, taxpayers and other entities can now file their Income Tax Returns (ITR) till August 31. 

	The most simplified form, ITR-2A, to be filled by those individuals and HUFs who do not have income from either business, profession or by way of capital gains and do not hold foreign assets, only asks for the passport number of the tax-filer, with the words "if available".
 

	Filers now will have to declare only about the "total number of savings and current bank accounts" held by them "at any time during the previous year (excluding dormant accounts)."
 

	The form also has space to fill up the IFSC code of the bank and in an additional feature, tax filers have been given an option to indicate their bank accounts in which they would want their refund credited.
 

	The I-T department, in the new ITRs, has also sought the Aadhaar number of filers and has also given options for providing two email ids to it.
 

	"The inclusion of Aadhaar and emails are to ensure a regime of online ITR filing in the country," a senior official said to PTI.
 

	The department has also provided for an additional four-page schedule to this simplified form for those who wish to file any other details, applicable in a case-to-case basis.
 

	In the ITR-2, for individuals and HUFs having income from business or profession, the form remains simple but they will have to declare if they hold any foreign assets abroad or have income from "any source outside India."
 The new ITRs have replaced the 14-page form that were notified earlier this year, triggering a major controversy with individuals, industrialists and MPs saying tax filing would become cumbersome as those forms had sought details including foreign trips and bank accounts details. <keyword id="6355261" type="POSITION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Finance-minister">Finance Minister</keyword> <keyword id="42575" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Arun-Jaitley">Arun Jaitley</keyword> had ordered putting these forms on hold following the controversy. 

	Also, in the new ITRs, an expat who is not an Indian citizen and is in India on business, employment or student visa, would not mandatorily be required to report the foreign assets acquired by him during the previous years when he was non-resident and if no income was derived from such assets during the relevant previous year.

New and simplified ITR forms for taxpayers

If you are filing the <keyword id="6374875" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="itr">ITR</keyword> for the first time, you will wonder if filing ITR is a difficult process. The IT department has made ITR filing a highly user friendly process. Here is how to file the ITR yourself easily. Visit <a href="https://incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in/">https://incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in/</a> this is the e-filing website of the IT department. If you file ITR for the first time, click on ‘New Registration’. Provide the information asked and create your profile. For creating your user ID, you must have an active email ID and mobile number. Your registered email ID and mobile numbers are important avenues to receive all the communications from the IT department. When you click the activation link sent to you, the registration will be completed. If you need any assistance, you can click on ‘customer care tab’ to get the helpline number and call the customer care section. Login to the website and give the required details including user ID which is your PAN, password and the captcha. Click on Log-in. You will see ‘Your Account’ dash board. Click on e-file and select the option ‘Income Tax Return’. Choose the Assessment Year and the ITR form that is relevant to you. The two options to choose from are ITR-1 and ITR-4. Choose submission mode ‘prepare and submit online’ and click on Submit. You will have to select the option for verifying your returns. The three options are a) Via Aadhaar OTP (this will be valid for 30 minutes), b) the option of EVC generation through My Account or Bank ATM (this is valid for 72 hours) or c) the option of sending signed copy of ITR-V to Centralized Processing Centre, Income Tax Department, Bengaluru -560500. Select the option convenient to you and click on ‘Submit’. You will be redirected to the page that will ask you to fill in the form that you have selected. Before filling in, read the ‘General Instructions’ for getting to know the dos and don’ts. Fill in the details in different tabs in the ITR form including General Information, Income Details, Tax Details, Taxes paid and verification and 80G. Ensure that the tax payable displayed in the form matches with the calculations you have made. Before submitting finally, save the data you have entered and check it once again in order to avoid any mistakes. You can also see a preview of your filled in form before final submission. After you submit, your ITR form will be uploaded and you will have to verify your return through any of the options provided. It is possible to verify the return through Aadhaar OTP or the Electronic verification method. For verifying through offline method, send a singed printout of the ITR V to CPC, Bengaluru within 120 days from the date of filing the ITR. Once your ITR is uploaded successfully, you will get an acknowledgement on your registered mobile and email. This acknowledgement will also be displayed in your account on the e-filing website. You can also download it if you want. Once the department processes your ITR, you will get the information via email and SMS on your registered email ID and mobile numbers.

If the individual sustained any losses, the form ITR 2 needs to be used. Part C – Deductions and taxable total income In this section, the taxpayer has to furnish all the relevant details of the investments that will be counted for tax savings or the expenses that are eligible to claim tax deductions. The total income after all these calculations must be mentioned in this section. Part D – Computation of Tax Payable In this section, the person paying tax needs to club the items including Advance tax, Self-assessment Tax, TDS, TCS under ‘Total Tax Paid’. Part E – Other Information This section is meant to provide the details with regard to the savings and current accounts held by the person during the previous year (excluding the dormant accounts that are not operational for over 3 years). Schedule IT – Details of Advance tax and Self-assessment Tax payments If the taxpayer has made an advance payment of tax or some self-assessment taxes, such details must be entered with the BSR code of the bank through which the payment was processed, the payment date, challan’s serial number, and the total amount paid through the challan. Schedule TDS – Details of TDS/TCS In this section, the details from Form 16 issued by the employer with regard to salary income must be given. Also, the details about the TDS or TCS as per Form 27D issued by the tax collector must be furnished. Verification In this section, the taxpayer must enter the date and signature. Today is <keyword id="22458495" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="July-31st" source="keywords">July 31st</keyword>, 2024, the last day to file your income tax returns, without having to pay any penalties. And before you ask, the <keyword id="19903456" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="income-tax-department" source="keywords">Income Tax Department</keyword> has not come out with any notification informing the taxpayers of a deadline extension. That is why you should not delay filing your <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/personal-finance/article/heres-your-ready-reckoner-for-itr-filing/articleshow/111402608.cms" data-type="tilCustomLink">income tax returns</a> anymore! The <keyword id="20171597" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="IT-department" source="keywords">IT department</keyword> noted that as of July 26th, 2024, over 5 crore ITRs had already been filed, marking an 8.5% increase from the number of ITRs filed during this period, last year. The IT department, in an X post, highlighted that last year, it had reached the 5-crore <keyword id="22083160" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="ITR-filing-deadline" source="keywords">ITR filing deadline</keyword> on July 27th. However, this year, it had breached the milestone a day earlier, i.e., on July 26th, 2024. Earlier, the All Gujarat Federation of Tax Consultants and Income Tax Bar Association had requested a deadline extension for AY 2024–25 from July 31st, 2024, to August 31st, 2024, citing issues and glitches in the tax filing portal. However, there has been no response from the finance ministry on the same. <h2>What happens if I don't file my ITR until July 31st? </h2>For AY 2024–25, you can file a <keyword id="6380232" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="belated-ITR" source="Orion">belated ITR</keyword> until December 31st, 2024. But remember, it comes with many disadvantages as well. Here's a snapshot of all the benefits you will have to forego: <h2>What are the penalties for late filing of ITR? </h2>1. You will have to pay a penalty of Rs. 1,000 if your total annual taxable income is below Rs 5,00,000. But if your taxable income exceeds this threshold, you will have to pay a penalty of Rs 5,000. 2. Even if you have to file a <keyword id="17933087" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="NIL-ITR" source="Orion">nil ITR</keyword>, you must do so before July 31st. This is because if you do not end up filing it on time, you will have to pay a fine of Rs 1,000. 3. According to Section 234A of the <keyword id="19936187" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="income-tax-act" source="keywords">Income Tax Act</keyword>, you will also have to pay interest on your outstanding tax amount at the rate of 1% per month, starting from the due date, i.e., July 31st. <h2>No carry forward of losses, old tax regime</h2>1. You will not be able to carry forward any losses, including those from your mutual funds or stock investments, business income, and other sources. You will only be allowed to carry forward your losses from house properties. This could significantly raise your total tax liability and lead to you incurring hefty losses. 2. After July 31st, 2024, you will not be able to opt for the old tax regime for tax calculation purposes. Starting August 1, the new tax regime, which offers significantly fewer deductions and exemptions as compared to the old regime, will be considered default for you.  In the past, when such incidents took place, the government at least offered an explanation as to why. Just last year it was due to the fact that the PAN and Aadhaar cards hadn’t been linked yet. The year before that it was a strike followed by a holiday. In fact, in 2015, the deadline was extended twice.The first time it was due to the fact that forms had changed and the second time was due to the slowdown of e-services. There was some confusion over what the <keyword id="47209" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Finance-Ministry">Finance Ministry</keyword> means by ‘said categories’ without specifying any categories whatsoever. But consensus dictates that the same categories of taxpayers that had to file their returns by July 31, will now be able to do so till August 31. Enforcing deadlines Until last year, there wasn’t any penalty issued for filing an ITR late but for 2018-19, there’s a new addition to the Income Tax Act. Section 234F states that in due dates are violated than an individual would have to pay a fine of up to Rs 10,000. The persons earning through the following sources can use ITR 1. <ul><li>Earnings through salary or pension</li><li>Earnings from their own property or house</li><li>Earnings from other kind of sources (this does not include winning from horse race or lottery)</li></ul>How to fill ITR 1 form Part A – General Information In the general information section, the taxpayer must fill in their personal details including name, sex, age, residential status, address, contact number, etc. Part B – Gross Total Income In this section, the details pertaining to the income made from salary or pension as found in Form 16 or the <keyword id="17506" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="TDS">TDS</keyword> certificate issued by the employer need to be furnished. If the tax payer worked for more than one employer in the given year, the details with regard to the total salaries received from different employers need to be entered. If the person has any income through rents or loss due to payment of housing loan interest from a single house or property, such details need to be given in this section. If the individual sustained any losses, the form ITR 2 need to be used. Part C – Deductions and taxable total income In this section, the tax payer has to furnish all the relevant details of the investments that will be counted for tax savings or the expenses that are eligible to claim tax deductions. The total income after all these calculations must be mentioned in this section. Part D – Computation of Tax Payable In this section, the person paying tax needs to club the items including Advance tax, Self-assessment Tax, TDS, TCS under ‘Total Tax Paid’. The details with regard to all kinds of exempt income, like dividend income, agricultural income, and others must be mentioned here. Part E – Other Information This section is meant to provide the details with regard to the savings and current accounts held by the person during the previous year (excluding the dormant accounts that are not operational for over 3 years). The individual must also furnish the details regarding the cash deposited in the accounts other than the current and <keyword id="114757" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Savings-Account">savings account</keyword> like loan accounts and others. If the cash deposited over the year is more than Rs. 2 lakhs, the aggregate amount of cash deposited must be furnished here. Schedule IT – Details of Advance tax and Self-assessment Tax payments If the tax payer has made any advance payment of tax or some self-assessment taxes, such details must be entered with the BSR code of the bank through which the payment was processed, the payment date, challan’s serial number, and the total amount paid through the challan. Schedule TDS – Details of TDS/TCS In this section, the details from Form 16 issued by the employer with regard to <keyword id="2414551" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Salary-income">salary income</keyword> must be given. Also, the details about the TDS or TCS as per Form 27D issued by the tax collector must be furnished. <keyword id="6401487" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="verification">Verification</keyword> In this section, the tax payer must enter the date and signature. The form will not be accepted if there is no valid signature.
