Indian companies across multiple sectors have reported disappointing results in the second quarter of fiscal year 2025, notes a new JM Financials report. Consequently, their poor performance has triggered stock price corrections for affected companies. The brunt of this weaker than expected earnings was largely borne by consumer centric sectors like FMCG (fast moving consumer goods), retail, and auto, which slacked largely due to dampened urban demand. For instance, India's largest automaker, Maruti Suzuki, reported a 5% YoY decline in its total domestic passenger vehicle wholesales, largely on the back of pent-up inventory. Similarly, Honda reported a staggering 23% YoY dip in its total sales during October 2024. A recent report by Bernstein noted that around 48% of the companies listed on the NSE100 index missed their earnings estimate for Q2FY25, the highest since March 2020. Most companies have mentioned deteriorated domestic demand, urban slowing, macroeconomic risk, and margin pressures as the main reasons behind the dip. "The quarter's earnings have made investors nervous," noted the JM Financials report. The challenging environment stems from multiple factors: softening consumer demand, rising input costs, and companies' limited ability to increase prices. Moreover, this is not limited to just one quarter. Companies have been reporting weak, single-digit earnings growth for the last six consecutive quarters. Data from India Data Hub also suggests that corporate profits of listed companies plunged by as much as 3.4% during the quarter ended September 30, 2024. This is in stark contrast to the year-ago period, where they had shot up by over 40% The oil and gas sector had a difficult quarter, with refiners hit by weak margins and city gas distributors struggling with higher input costs. Financial institutions showed mixed results. While government-owned banks reported strong numbers, microfinance institutions and some private lenders faced massive difficulties with their unsecured loans. Most notable amongst this was the case of IndusInd Bank, which saw its net profits dip by 40% amidst burgeoning provisions, which climbed 87% to Rs 1,820 crore in Q2, as against Rs 974 crore reported in the year-ago period. <h2>Markets head southwards</h2>The selling trend by FPIs has dragged down the major Indian indices, the Nifty 50 and Sensex, both of which have dropped by around 8% since the beginning of this selling spree in October. According to National Securities Depository Ltd. (NSDL) data, FPIs offloaded equities worth a significant Rs 19,994 crore in just the first five trading sessions of November last week. The impact is clearly visible on Indian stock markets. Data suggests that while every sector in October closed the month in red, auto, oil and gas, and consumer durables were the most badly hit, each declining by as much as 10% during the month. Another indicator underlining the inherent weakness of the market was that the month saw only 242 stocks hit their 52-week high, significantly below the usual monthly average of 310.

But this year, there are strong signs that companies are ready to start going public and merging again.<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/megamergers-deals-m-a-wall-street-comeback-2024-9">Preliminary data compiled by LSEG</a> shows 425 mergers globally so far this year valued at more than $1 billion. That's up 24% from the same period in 2023. What's more, deals valued at greater than $10 billion were recently up 39% compared with the same period last year.The number of companies going public is also soaring. 106 US companies have gone public through the third quarter, raising a total of $24.7 billion, according to IPO tracker Renaissance Capital. That's up from 71 in 2022 and 108 in 2023 and on track to beat the $27 billion raised in those two years.Third-quarter results — and commentary about 4Q dealmaking so far — will be closely watched for further signs of progress in M&amp;A, equity underwriting, and debt underwriting.<h2 id="bf745d80-abee-4488-881c-e8551a17811c">Trading</h2>At the Barclays Financial Services conference in September, big bank executives warned that trading revenues may be muted compared to 2023.Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon described a "more challenging macro environment, particularly in the month of August," and warned that the bank's trading business "is trending down close to 10%." Solomon cited the bank's revenues for FICC, or fixed-income, currencies and commodities, saying that results were "very, very strong" in the third quarter of 2023.At the same conference, JPMorgan's president and chief operating officer, Daniel Pinto, predicted that trading revenues would be "flat to slightly up 2%." "It was a bit more challenging environment to monetize client flows, particularly in rates," he said.<h2 id="723af9a4-99cc-49fd-b909-2fc736985cbb">Lending</h2>Stock analysts will be watching what banks say about net interest income, which is how much banks earn off the difference between what they pay on deposits and what they earn on loans. When the Fed started raising rates, banks were making out like bandits because they were able to charge more for loans more quickly than they were raising rates on savings accounts.But banks have been warning that this dichotomy wouldn't last forever, and loan growth has indeed been slowing as the economy slows. Lower rates could boost lending yet again, but that could take time. In the meantime, JPMorgan's Pinto in September warned that Wall Street stock analysts' 2025 predictions for NII of between $91.5 billion and $90 billion were too high, sending the bank's stock down."I think that that number will be lower," Pinto said at the Barclays Financial Services conference. Commercial vehicle maker <keyword id="6357085" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="ashok-leyland" source="Orion">Ashok Leyland</keyword> on Thursday said its profit after tax nearly tripled to Rs 561 crore in September quarter 2023-24. In the year-ago period, the PAT was Rs 199.31 crore. Revenues during the quarter under review rose to Rs 9,638 crore from Rs 8,266 crore in the second quarter of FY23, the company said in a statement. It said EBITDA (Earnings Before Interest, Tax, Depreciation and Amortisation) for the quarter was Rs 1,080 crore as against Rs 537 crore in the corresponding quarter of FY23. Net debt stood at Rs 1,139 crore at the end of the second quarter, it said. The domestic medium and heavy commercial vehicles (MHCV) sales stood at 29,947 units, up 18% from the second quarter of the previous fiscal, which is in line with industry growth. Light commercial vehicle (LCV) volume was at 16,998 units compared to 17,040 LCVs sold in the same period last year, Ashok Leyland said. Export volumes for the quarter (MHCV &amp; LCV) were 4% higher at 2,901 units from the year-ago period despite multiple socio-political challenges across the globe. The company said while its overall MHCV MS is moving in the right direction, it significantly increased its bus market share, making it the top bus manufacturer in the country. "We have grown and grown profitability. The second half of the year appears to have the twin tailwinds of demand growth and softer commodity prices which should improve the profitability of the industry," Shenu Agarwal, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Ashok Leyland, said. This is the third consecutive quarter of double-digit EBITDA, he said, adding that there is tremendous focus on margin enhancement, network expansion, operational efficiency, cost optimisation and deployment of digital as an enabler for growth and productivity. There is an enhanced thrust to grow all non-MHCV businesses as well and "we expect to see the benefits of all of this in the coming quarters," he added. Further, the company said that its all other businesses posted good growth in the current quarter and added that it expanded its MHCV range by launching new products in tipper, tractor and MAV categories. The focus on expansion of the distribution network continued with further addition of 47 touch points in the quarter, especially in the northern and eastern parts of the country, it said. "We continue to see strong demand in all segments of trucks and passenger vehicles. The industry continues to post strong growth, on the back of strong macroeconomic factors and we are confident that FY24 will see further growth in the second half as well," <keyword id="454707" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="dheeraj-hinduja" source="Orion">Dheeraj Hinduja</keyword>, Executive Chairman of Ashok Leyland, said. While International business globally is challenged owing to the conflicts across the globe, "we are intensifying our expansion strategy in our focus markets of the Middle East, Africa and Asia," he said. Global expansion</h2>BYD has embarked on an ambitious expansion drive this year to boost sales outside China. Executives have said they want half of BYD's sales to come from abroad in the future.Though US and European tariffs on Chinese EVs make selling in these regions problematic, BYD is <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/byd-saic-chinese-ev-makers-plot-world-takeover-2024-6">rapidly setting up factories worldwide</a> to cut costs and avoid trade barriers. Vertically integrated supply chains</h2>The core of BYD's success — and part of the reason it can produce EVs so cheaply — is that it tries to make almost every component in-house.BYD produces its own batteries and computer chips. Economists expect 110,000 jobs added to the economy last month, a big decline from the September employment report, which came in hot with 245,000 new jobs.From there, investors will be hyper-focused on the Presidential election next week, which will be followed by the Fed' next policy meeting on November 6-7.
