After landing on the Moon's southern pole and deploying an Indian solar observatory in space, the latest endeavour by the <keyword id="116095" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Space-Research-Organisation" source="Orion">Indian Space Research Organisation</keyword> (<keyword id="6358064" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ISRO" source="Orion">ISRO</keyword>) involved placing an advanced eye in the sky to closely monitor the Earth's surface and oceans. Now, the initial fruits of this ambitious venture have come to light. <keyword id="18493390" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="INSAT-3DS" source="Orion">INSAT-3DS</keyword>, a <keyword id="2829864" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="meteorological-satellite" source="Orion">meteorological satellite</keyword> pivotal for <keyword id="424037" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="weather-forecasting" source="Orion">weather forecasting</keyword>, climate monitoring and understanding atmospheric processes, has unveiled the first batch of images captured by its meteorological Imager and Sounder payloads. Launched on February 17, 2024, the satellite swiftly completed orbit-raising operations and reached its designated geostationary slot for In-Orbit Testing (IOT) by February 28, 2024. The first imaging session for the <keyword id="20926618" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Meteorological-Payload" source="Orion">Meteorological Payload</keyword> IOT took place on March 7, 2024, yielding the images that have now been released. <div type="twitter" handle="isro" handlename="isro" favoritecount="0" retweetcount="0" id="1767155560645071344"></div> Equipped with a 6-channel imager, the satellite captures images of the Earth's surface and atmosphere across various spectral channels. These channels enable the gathering of data on diverse atmospheric and surface phenomena, including clouds, aerosols, land surface temperature, vegetation health and water vapour distribution. Moreover, the imager can be tailored to capture specific features of interest. In contrast, the 19-channel sounder captures radiation emitted by the Earth's atmosphere, with channels carefully selected to measure radiation emitted by different atmospheric constituents and properties like water vapour, ozone, carbon dioxide and other gases. Some channels are dedicated to measuring temperature variations across different atmospheric layers. Together, these payloads can generate more than 40 geophysical data products, including sea-surface temperature, rainfall (precipitation) products, land surface temperature, atmospheric motion vectors and high-resolution winds, among others, catering to diverse user needs. INSAT-3DS Satellite represents a continuation of the Third Generation Meteorological Satellite from Geostationary Orbit. Fully funded by the <keyword id="158211" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ministry-of-Earth-Sciences" source="Orion">Ministry of Earth Sciences</keyword> (MoES), this mission aims to enhance meteorological observations, monitor land and ocean surfaces for weather forecasting, and provide timely disaster warnings. Its primary goals include monitoring the Earth's surface, observing the oceans, offering vertical profiles of various meteorological parameters of the atmosphere and facilitating satellite-aided search and rescue operations.

"Its the first time that we have launched so early in the year... It’s also the 40th year of Arianespace, the anniversary is in March," said Stéphane Israël, CEO of Arianespace, ahead of the launch. This was the 23rd launch of an <keyword id="2964782" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="ISRO-satellite">ISRO satellite</keyword> by Arianespace — the commercial arm of the European Space Agency (ESA). Overall, it was the 251st launch in the Ariane-series. "The mission will be around 38 minutes… We are going to lift at 6:05 am, the weather is great — it's absolutely perfect. I have a launch window of 1 hour 55 minutes and we will lift off towards the east," Israël explained. GSAT 30 is aimed at providing connectivity in even the most remote regions of the country. Using GSAT 30’s bands, Indian cable operators will be able to broadcast their content to the Gulf countries, Australia and other regions within Asia. It is ISRO’s 41st communications satellite.  European Space Agency’s (<a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/science/space/news/isro-gsat-30-launch-on-january-17-with-european-space-agency/articleshow/73184551.cms">ESA</a>) commercial arm — Arianespace — launched the satellites off the northern coast of South America at 02:30 am IST on Friday. The 51.03-meter tall rocket weighing 780 tons <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/science/space/news/isro-gsat-30-launch-explained-step-by-step/articleshow/73313054.cms">climbed into the sky</a> with 2.9 million pounds of thrust from its core engine and solid-fueled boosters. This may be the first launch of 2020 but its one of the last for Ariane 5. ESA’s Ariane 6 is scheduled for its first launch in 2020. After a transition period of five years, Ariane 5 will take its last trip into space in 2023.

 The rocket’s boosters did 90% of the work, pushing the payloads against Earth’s gravity by burning 2 tons of propellant per second — an average year’s worth of gas for a car.

 The first payload — GSAT 30’s fellow passenger the Eutelsat Konnect satellite — was deployed at an altitude of 1000 kilometres. The broadband communications satellite for the Paris-based company is based on a new satellite design by Thales Alenia Space with an all-electric propulsion system and xenon plasma thrusters. After a cumulative 38 minutes, Ariane 5 placed the GSAT 30 into geostationary transit orbit (GTO). From here, the satellite will raise its orbit from the to the final circular geostationary orbit (GSO) by controlled firing of its motor. That’s when it will finally deploy its solar panels and antennas. What does GSAT 30 do? India’s 3357-kilo GSAT 30 satellite is a replacement for Insat 4A — launched back in 2005, also abroad an Ariane 5 rocket.  GSAT 30 will operate from 83 degrees east longitude from Earth’s geostationary orbit. It will help cable operators broadcast their content overseas. ISRO’s claims the GSAT 30 will increase the C-band and K-band coverage over India, its islands, Asian countries, Gulf countries and Australia. "GSAT 30 will provide continuity of direct-to-home TV services from this slot, as well as digital satellite news-gathering and very small aperture terminal services," said ISRO chairman K.  That satellite has been designed to last at least 15 years with 12 C-band transponders and 12 Ku-band transponders. It has three-axis stabilised momentum-based control systems with a host of sensors, reaction wheels and thrusters. "The Ku-band transponders will provide services over the Indian mainland and islands. The satellite employs high-power amplifier and state-of-the-art antenna systems to meet the requirements of multiple users," Sivan explained. In order to maneuver in space, the satellite hastwo large propellant tanks accommodated within its central structural cylinder. The liquid apogee motor — GSAT 30’s main engine — is mounted on a separate deck with interfaces with the bottom ring of the cylinder. The power system of the satellite includes double-side solar arrays for generating electric power in addition a lithium-ion battery of 180 amps of capacity. Until now, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has launched 20 other GSAT satellites — 14 of which are still in service. The last one was GSAT-31, launched in February last year. However, ISRO plans to launch at least three more GSAT satellites in 2020. ISRO's GSAT 30 satellite successfully rides the Ariane 5 rocket into orbit abroad the first launch of 2020

<ul><li><keyword id="414120" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Chandrayaan-2">Chandrayaan 2</keyword>, India's second <keyword id="7500410" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="mission-to-the-moon">mission to the moon</keyword>, has been put on hold due to a 'technical snag' mere minutes from the launch window scheduled at 2:15am on July 15 Indian Standard Time.</li><li>This is the seventh time that <keyword id="45499" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Chandrayaan">Chandrayaan</keyword> 2 has been delayed since its original launch date back in 2013.</li><li>The Indian Space Research Organisation is yet to explain the 'technical snag' and decide on the next perspective launch windows for India's mission to the Moon's South pole.</li></ul>India’s second mission to the moon, Chandrayaan-2, has been put on hold yet again.  India's apex space agency has not disclosed any details about what the 'technical snag' aboard Chandrayaan 2 actually is but it was spotted after the launch vehicle was fully fueled up and ready to go. The new launch window for Chandrayaan 2 is also yet to be announced but in the past ISRO has reiterated that it plans to launch it's mission to the Moon's South Pole by the end of 2019. This is not the first time that this is mission has been pushed to a later date due to technical issues. In fact, the moon mission was initially supposed to take off in 2013, six years ago. ISRO’s Young Scientists Programme stands cancelled due to COVID-19

<ul><li>Astronomers have captured what looks to be the birth of a <keyword id="438857" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="New-Planet">new planet</keyword> for the very first time, 520 light-years from Earth. </li><li>Images taken by the European Southern Observatory (ESO) are the deepest images of the AB Aurigae star system till date. </li><li>The bright yellow “twist” at the centre is the new planet winding inwards into its orbit and expanding outwards to kick out gas and dust — making some room for itself.</li></ul>For the first time in human history, astronomers were witness to the birth of a new planet. The European Southern Observatory (<a href="https://www.eso.org/public/news/eso2008/">ESO</a>) released an image of a fiery-looking orange mass of gas that shows the cosmic matter of the universe at a gravitational tipping point — which it believes to “telltale” signs of a star system being born. <div type="image" title="ESOinnerdisk" msid="75860153" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;The &amp;#8216;twist&amp;#8217; (in very bright yellow) marks the spot where a planet may be forming&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> The planet is forming around a young star called AB Aurigae around 520 light-years from Earth. "The twist is expected from some theoretical models of planet formation,” said co-author of the study published in <a href="https://www.aanda.org/articles/aa/abs/2020/05/aa38008-20/aa38008-20.html">Astronomy &amp; Astrophysics</a>, Anne Dutrey. She explains that it shows how the two spirals are meeting up where the planet is being born. The wave gets shaped into a spiral arm as the planet rotates around the central star as seen by the bright yellow ‘twist’ region at the centre. Astronomers knew this was going to happen years ago “Thousands of exoplanets have been identified so far, but little is known about how they form,” added lead author of the study, Anthony Boccaletti. He embarked on the mission to find a newly forming planet after the first hints of a new planet being born were observed a few years ago with the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA). “We need to observe very young systems to really capture the moment when planets form,” he explained. He and his team fine-tuned the SPHERE instrument on the VLT to observe if there had been any further developments. The result was some of the most in-depth images of the star system till date. Not only do they confirm the observations that were initially made by ALMA, but also captured the enigmatic ‘twist’, which is the key to their assumption that it could be a new planet being born before their very own eyes.
