PM congratulates ISRO on successful launch of broadband satellites

Bengaluru, State-run <keyword id="7803427" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="NewSpace-India">NewSpace India</keyword> Ltd (NSIL), the commercial arm of the space department, bagged orders to launch four foreign satellites for earth observation from <keyword id="6355143" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="sriharikota">Sriharikota</keyword> spaceport in Andhra Pradesh, a top official said on Friday. "We have signed contracts with four foreign customers to launch four satellites in the earth's lower orbit using the PSLV and SSLV rockets of the Indian space agency <keyword id="6358064" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="isro">ISRO</keyword> (<keyword id="116095" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Space-Research-Organisation">Indian Space Research Organisation</keyword>) from its spaceport at Sriharikota," NSIL Chairman G. Narayanan told reporters here. The top official, however, did not disclose names of the customers or their location due to non-disclosure agreements with them. "Of the four satellites, three will be launched using ISRO's polar satellite launch vehicle (PSLV) and one with its small satellite launch vehicle (SSLV). The spacecraft will be used for earth observation applications," said Narayanan, marking the company's two years of completion. The state-run NSIL was in the news recently for launching Brazil's earth observation satellite Amazonia-1 on February 28 from the spaceport on board ISRO's PSLV-C51 rocket along with 18 other satellites. Amazonia-1 is the optical earth observation satellite of National Institute for Space Research (INPE) in Brazil. In addition to these commercial launches, NSIL will launch two communication satellites for Indian customers offering direct-to-home (DTH) services and telecom operators offering broadband services using Ku-band transponders. "The two communication satellites, to be launched by ISRO from its spaceport, will be owned and operated by us (NSIL) for customers on commercial terms for revenue-generating services," said Narayanan but declined to name the customers claiming confidentiality. Unlike the now defunct ISRO's commercial arm Antrix Corporation, which has ceased to function after its deal with Multimedia Deval fell through, the 2-year NSIL is a wholly owned state-run of the department of space as a central public sector enterprise. NSIL has been formed with Rs 10 crore paid-up capital and Rs 100-crore authorised capital. The space department has provided Rs 700 crore in the budget for fiscal 2021-22 for investing in infrastructure and capacity building to make satellites, rockets and launch them on commercial terms. "We also plan to invest Rs 2,000 crore per annum over the next five years to ramp up infrastructure to build satellites and rockets, launch them and operate their services for domestic use," asserted Narayanan. The Rs 2,000-crore for investment per annum will be raised through a mix of equity and debt. "We will also ramp up our headcount by hiring about 300 more people for stepping up operations and prepare to launch more satellites and rockets," said Narayanan on the occasion. Going forward, the fledgling company will launch heavy satellites for space applications and observation in the earth's geo-synchronous orbit by state-run and private firms. "The company has generated Rs 300 crore revenue in the first year (2019-20) of operations, Rs 400-crore in the second year (2020-21) amid the Covid pandemic through launches and space-based services from ISRO's satellites," said NSIL Director for technology and strategy D. Radhakrishnan. During its first two years of operations, the company has launched 45 auxiliary customer satellites onboard ISRO's 4 PSLV missions, including Amazonia-1. ISRO's commercial arm bags orders to launch four foreign satellites as it looks to invest ₹10,000 crore over the next five years

After security alarm was raised surrounding the news that the website of <keyword id="6358064" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="ISRO">ISRO</keyword>'s commercial arm <keyword id="553564" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Antrix-Corporation-Limited">Antrix Corporation Limited</keyword> was hacked, ISRO officials said the problem occurred due to a purposeful attempt by someone to link the home page to another page. 

	"It appears that the Antrix website has not been hacked, but might have been a purposeful attempt by someone who linked the home page to another page," the ISRO official told PTI.

	The website of Antrix was reportedly hacked yesterday and thereafter the work to fix the problem was taken up by Antrix officials and it was blocked immediately. 
 

	"The problem is there but there should not be any cause of worry because the website does not contain sensitive data which could be detrimental for India's security," he said. 
 

	Asked if it was an internal or international attempt to cause damage, he said, "We still cannot say who that someone is. Investigations are on." 
 

	The official added that the attempt to link the homepage to other page could be to gain popularity. The probe is on, or could be for some other reason. 
 Damage to Antrix website comes two days after ISRO successfully launched five British commercial satellites on board <keyword id="2933085" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="PSLV-C28">PSLV-C28</keyword> from Sriharikota in its heaviest commercial mission.

Antrix website not hacked, damage done purposefully

SRIHARIKOTA: The success of GSLV-D5 signals is the beginning of a new era of commercial viability for Indian space missions. 
 Though India had in the last two decades claimed its rightful place in the global space sector with 25 consecutive successes of its Polar <keyword id="6358065" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Satellite">Satellite</keyword> Launch Vehicles (PSLVs), there remained a <keyword id="138322" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="GSLV">GSLV</keyword>-shaped hole. While PSLV can carry satellites up to 2 tonnes to a lowearth orbit, GSLV was needed for the launch of heavier satellites, especially of the telecommunication variety that need to be put in a 36,000km geosynchronous orbit. Sunday’s launch using an <keyword id="6500558" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="40" keywordseo="Indigenous">indigenous</keyword> cryogenic engine bridges this gap. 
 <keyword id="153327" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Antrix-Corporation">Antrix Corporation</keyword>, the commercial arm of <keyword id="6358064" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="ISRO">Isro</keyword>, which has been putting its workhorse PSLV to good use to launch satellites for other countries which find the Indian launchpad reliable and affordable, will now get a boost. Antrix chairman and managing director V S Hegde said the corporation is expecting a 15% growth in turnover as more countries were approaching Isro for commercial launches. Antrix has registered a revenue of `1,300 crore in the current fiscal. 
 Isro chairman K <keyword id="62601" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="radhakrishnan">Radhakrishnan</keyword> confirmed that <keyword id="87" type="COUNTRY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Germany">Germany</keyword> has approached India for the launch of an 800-kg satellite, and the UK for three satellites weighing 300kg each. “There will be at least two dedicated commercial launches this year using PSLV,” said Radhakrishnan. Isro scientists said earnings from such launches could more than double once GSLV is accepted globally as a reliable launch vehicle. 
 At the level of technology demonstration and outer space exploration, GSLV has come a shot in the arm for Isro. “Though we have spelled out our plans for a manned mission, we couldn’t arrive at a tentative date because of the unreliability of GSLV. This success will speed up such projects,” said a <keyword id="9662" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Scientist">scientist</keyword>. 
 
Radhakrishnan said Isro was ready for a series of GSLV launches, including those for GSAT-6, GSAT-7A, GSAT-9 and Chandrayaan-2. The second moon mission will use a GSLV, after a second success of the cryogenic engine.

India forms a new space company to sell ISRO’s space technology products

And, this might only increase in the future. Keeping costs low ISRO has an edge over its competition as it keeps its launch costs as low as possible — something that Elon Musk’s SpaceX is also trying to accomplish by employing reusable rockets. ISRO charges approximately $3 million per satellite launch where as SpaceX’s cost are still at around $60 million. In comparison, United Launch Alliance — which mostly launches satellites for the US government and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) — charges upward of $100 million. But, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/india-low-cost-chandrayaan-and-mars-missions-come-at-a-price/articleshow/70226652.cms">keeping costs low comes with its own price.</a> Most of India’s missions, like Mangalyaan and the upcoming Gaganyaan, are technology demonstrators rather than long-term voyages which collect data. Private participation The market for space launches is getting increasingly competitive with private players entering the field globally. In India, only the public sector is allowed to launch rockets into space. Private participation, so far, has been limited to building components and technologies for ISRO, on a small scale. The Indian government is currently mulling over the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/india-space-activities-bill-addresses-damage-in-outer-space/articleshow/69960212.cms">‘Space Activities Bill’</a> to align its liability in outer space with international standards. Once the bill comes into place, it will allow private players to launch rockets with a government license. “ISRO, competent as it is, cannot be the only warden of India’s space ambitions and necessities. ISRO’s commercial operations clock in over ₹60 billion in revenue but leaves private players out of the equation

To a query about the requirement for industries to partner with the ISRO for taking up commercial launch of SSLV missions, Somanath said a day-long meeting was recently held with the industry. "I am hoping that the first technology transfer will happen in India between ISRO and industry. The Request for Interest (RFI) was released and as a single (entity) or as consortia, a company can show interest on the technology transfer (from ISRO) and what were the expectations from ISRO and how to qualify for such missions," he said. From the interactions held with the industry it emerged there was a huge amount of interest for them to learn about space, he added. "We told them it will be a huge challenge for anyone to learn rocketry from scratch. It is not just transferring technology, we are transferring the knowledge on how things are done (at ISRO). It is not the drawings alone, it is the knowledge behind those drawings we transfer to industry," according to Somanath, also the Secretary, Department of Space. Through the industry partnerships, ISRO would teach them on how to build a rocket, he said and added that the industry should qualify as per the criteria put forth by ISRO. The company should possess manufacturing capabilities, manufacturing facilities and financial strengths of a company would be assessed, he said. "We will add weightage and marks based on the performance of the company and based on that the companies will be shortlisted and a contract would be given to them after the companies which have to pay a technology transfer fee," he said. Some of the unique features of SSLVs are -- it provides low-cost access to Space, offers low turn-around time and flexibility in accommodating multiple satellites, 'launch on demand' feasibility and SSLV missions demand minimal launch infrastructure.

ISRO targets first Gaganyaan mission launch by December: Chairman

 Even though the SSLV is based on the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) rocket designs, the actual launch vehicle hasn't been unveiled by <a href="https://www.isro.gov.in/update/01-jan-2019/message-chairmans-desk">ISRO</a> yet. SSLV's maiden voyage As compared the PSLV rocket, which can carry 1,100 - 1,600 kilograms, the SSLV can only accommodate 500 kilograms. And, the launch vehicle's first mission into space won't be a commercial launch with Spaceflight's payload on board. ISRO Chairman K. Sivan, told <a href="https://www.thehindu.com/news/national/isros-mini-launcher-sslv-is-unborn-but-has-2-flights-booked/article28859854.ece">The Hindu</a> that first ISRO will first launch a single defence Earth observation spacecraft in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) using the SSLV rocket by the end of the year with the commercial launch scheduled to take place in 2020. The hype around the SSLV rocket is based on the fact that it should only take ISRO around three days to put a launch together as compared to the months of preparation for other launches. NSIL's first customer NSIL might be a new company but Spaceflight is no stranger to using ISRO launch vehicles to get satellites into space. As a 'ridesharing' space company, Spaceflight normally doesn't put its own payloads on board the rockets but arranges for their clients to get their instruments on board. In April 2018, for example, Spaceflight set up 21 small international satellites to launch aboard ISRO's <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/here-is-a-list-of-isros-biggest-launches-over-the-last-2-years-that-showcase-indias-space-prowess/articleshow/52401289.cms">PSLV C45</a> rocket. ISRO’s new company just made its first sale to an American firm to come aboard a rocket that doesn’t exist yet

<ul><li>The Indian Space Research Organisation (<keyword id="6358064" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="isro">ISRO</keyword>) is looking to top <keyword id="6355315" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="elon-musk">Elon Musk</keyword>'s <keyword id="6360701" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="spacex">SpaceX</keyword> success by applying reusable launch technology (RLT) to their <keyword id="1557817" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="rocket-launches">rocket launches</keyword>. </li><li>Unlike SpaceX, who only used RLT in the first stage of a rocket launch, ISRO's wants to apply it to the second stage as well. </li><li>The application of RLT to the second stage of a rocket launch is something that no other space agency in the world has been able to achieve so far.</li></ul>The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is following in Elon Musk’s footsteps by trying to replicate the success SpaceX had with its reusable launch technology (RLT). It’s even looking to take it a lot further. SpaceX was only able to apply RLT to the first stage of a rocket launch, but ISRO wants to conduct an advanced version that will also carry into the second stage. The test is scheduled to take place between the months of June and July, later this year. <keyword id="2003919" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="K-Sivan">K Sivan</keyword>, the Chairman at ISRO, told the <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/isro-developing-technology-to-reuse-first-second-stages-of-rocket/articleshow/67532655.cms">Times of India</a>, “The second stage recovery has never been tried by any other space agency in the world, not even SpaceX.” ISRO’s success with this mission could make it a bigger part of the global market that’s set to grow to $7 billion by 2024. Building on ISRO’s commercial success Reusable launch technology (RLT) basically allows the company to re-use its first stage rocket for multiple launches. Not only does it save the company money, but also time that would be spent building a rocket from scratch. ISRO has already had some <a href="https://www.isro.gov.in/update/23-may-2016/india%E2%80%99s-reusable-launch-vehicle-technology-demonstrator-rlv-td-successfully">success</a> with it back in 2016 when it launched the HS9 solid rocket booster from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre. The Reusable Launch Vehicle - Technology Demonstrator (RLV-TD) on board the HS9 survived re-entry and neatly landed in the designated area over the Bay of Bengal. Currently, SpaceX dominates the global market for rocket launches. Starting out in 2009, it was able to capture more than 50% of the market share by 2018 — largely due to their use of reusable technology. On the other hand, Antrix Corporation Limited, the commercial and marketing arm of ISRO, only caters to 0.6% of the global market. India’s apex space agency is following Elon Musk's idea — and taking it a step forward

The flight acceptance hot test of CE-20 engine has been carried out in the High Altitude Test facility of ISRO Propulsion Complex (IPRC) at Mahendragiri in <keyword id="20154" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="tamil-nadu" source="Orion">Tamil Nadu</keyword>. The engine is assigned for the LVM3-M3 mission identified for launching the next 36 <keyword id="2686914" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="oneweb" source="Orion">OneWeb</keyword> India-1 satellites, the Indian Space Research Organisation said. Sources said these satellites of OneWeb, the London-based satellite communications company, are expected to be launched by the NewSpace India Limited (<keyword id="7835598" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="nsil" source="Orion">NSIL</keyword>), the ISRO's commercial arm, aboard LVM3 early next year. Friday's flight acceptance test comes within days of the launch of the first set of 36 OneWeb satellites by the NSIL from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC- SHAR) in <keyword id="6355143" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="sriharikota" source="Orion">Sriharikota</keyword> on October 23. According to OneWeb, its partnership with NSIL and ISRO demonstrated its commitment to provide connectivity across the length and breadth of India by 2023. From Ladakh to Kanyakumari and Gujarat to Arunachal Pradesh, OneWeb will bring secured solutions not only to enterprises but also to towns, villages, municipalities and schools, including the hardest-to-reach areas across the country, it said. "OneWeb's commitment to enhance connectivity in India is backed by Bharti Global, its largest investor", the company said. NSIL Chairman-cum-Managing Director Radhakrishnan D had said: "We look forward to strengthening our partnership with OneWeb and utilising the potential that LEO connectivity has to deliver broadband services across India." Last Sunday's launch marked the rocket's entry into the global commercial launch service market, according to the Bengaluru-headquartered national space agency. NSIL, a central public sector enterprise under the Department of Space, had earlier signed two launch service contracts with the Network Access Associated Limited (OneWeb) for launching a total of 72 OneWeb LEO (low earth orbit) satellites on-board ISRO's LVM3. LVM3, ISRO's heaviest rocket, is capable of launching a four ton class of satellite to Geosynchronous Transfer orbit. LVM3 (Launch Vehicle Mark 3) is a three-stage vehicle with two solid motor strap-ons, a liquid propellant core stage and a cryogenic stage.
