Mumbai, Of the 111 lunar missions in the last seven decades, 62 were successful, 41 failed and eight achieved partial success, according to the US space agency <keyword id="18017957" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="NASAs-database-on-Moon" source="Orion">NASA's database on Moon</keyword> missions. India on Friday launched its third mission to the Moon, <keyword id="8011274" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Chandrayaan-3" source="Orion">Chandrayaan-3</keyword>, with an aim to soft land on the surface of Earth's only natural satellite. A successful landing would make India the fourth country to achieve the rare feat after the United States, China and the erstwhile USSR. According to the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), the technically challenging soft landing on the lunar surface, which Chandrayaan-2 could not achieve, has been planned for 5.47 pm on August 23. Former <keyword id="648399" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ISRO-chairman-G-Madhavan-Nair" source="Orion">ISRO chairman G Madhavan Nair</keyword> said the success rate of lunar missions is nearly 50 per cent because of the uncertainties when the rockets leave Earth's gravitational field. "The influence of other planets, from the Sun, is quite a bit. A lot of radiation conditions exist in space and this leaves some equipment or components prone to failure. In India's both missions (Chandrayaan 1 and 2), we have precisely reached the moon's orbit," Nair told PTI on Friday. From 1958 to 2023, India as well as the US, the USSR (now Russia), Japan, the European Union, China and Israel have launched different lunar missions - from orbiters, landers and flyby (orbiting the Moon, landing on the Moon and flying by the Moon), as per the data. The first mission to the Moon - Pioneer 0 - was launched by the US on August 17, 1958, though it was unsuccessful. Six more missions were launched by the USSR and the US in the same year, but all failed. Luna 1, launched by the USSR on January 2, 1959, achieved partial success. It was also the first 'Moon flyby' mission. The Ranger 7 mission launched in July 1964 by the US was the first to take close-up pictures of the Moon. The first lunar soft landing and first pictures from the lunar surface came from Luna 9, launched by the USSR in January 1966. Five months later, in May 1966, the US successfully launched a similar mission named Surveyor-1. The Apollo 11 mission in July 1969 was the landmark expedition through which humans stepped onto the lunar surface for the first time. The three-crewed mission was headed by Neil Amstrong. From 1958 to 1979, only the US and the USSR launched Moon missions. In these 21 years, the two countries launched 90 such space expeditions. There was a lull in the decade that followed with no lunar missions from 1980-89. Japan, the European Union, China, India and Israel were late entrants. Japan launched Hiten, an orbiter mission in January 1990. This was also Japan's first Moon mission. After that, in September 2007, Japan launched Selene, another orbiter mission. There were six lunar missions from 2000-2009 - Europe (Smart-1), Japan (Selene), China (Chang'e 1), India (Chandrayaan-1) and the US (Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter and LCCROSS). Since 1990, the US, Japan, India, the European Union, China and Israel have collectively launched 21 lunar missions.

Success rate of lunar missions is a little over 50% as per NASA database

India is poised to derive full benefit of global investments on <keyword id="764355" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="5G">5G</keyword> standards and ecosystems in the coming two-three years, as equipment prices come down and devices become available, Chairman of <keyword id="6354287" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="bharti-airtel">Bharti Airtel</keyword>, <keyword id="6358599" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="sunil-mittal">Sunil Mittal</keyword> said on Tuesday. Terming space as the "next frontier of communications", Mittal said India's proactive lead in the space industry and <keyword id="116095" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Space-Research-Organisation">Indian Space Research Organisation</keyword> (<keyword id="6358064" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="isro">ISRO</keyword>) and Department of Space's call to private sector, would ensure that advantages move in the country's favour in space communication industry, as well. Speaking at India Mobile Congress 2020, a virtual event this year, Mittal said that onset of pandemic has accelerated digital adoption of various products and services. The force multiplier of pandemic has pushed digitalisation of the country, he added. The next-generation 5G would start to become the norm in the mobile broadband space in next two-three years. "As world settles down on 5G space, pricing of the equipment comes down and importantly the devices start getting available in plentiful, I think India in two-three years' time will be ready to receive the benefit of the investments that the globe would have made on 5G standard and 5G ecosystems," Mittal said. Mittal said he is upbeat about Bharti Enterprises' entry into space, which is the "next frontier of communications". "PM has shown tremendous foresight in putting out a consultation paper to invite private sector into space industry to launch satellites, to manufacture satellites, to start satellite communications and I am glad, we have taken an early call in partnership with British Government to set up world's first LEO (low Earth orbit) constellation satellite system to provide broadband connectivity to every square inch of the world," he said. Mittal exuded confidence that given India's lead in the space industry and ISRO and Department of Space's call to private sector, advantages would move in India's favour in space communication industry as well. India will be 5G-ready in the next two to three years, says Airtel chairman Sunil Mittal

<ul><li>The <keyword id="82181" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="World-Meteorological-Organisation">World Meteorological Organisation</keyword> (WMO) is expressed concerned that bandwidths allocated for <keyword id="1671941" type="TECHNOLOGY" weightage="20" keywordseo="5G-technology">5G technology</keyword> could put the future of other applications, like early weather warning systems, at risk. </li><li>They claim that the decision to allocation 24.25 to 27.5 GHz for 5G technology would impair the accuracy of data collection. </li><li>The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has expressed similar concerns as it opposed the use of the 26 GHz band for 5G deployment since its used for satellite service. </li></ul>It's not just ISRO — global agencies are also worried that 5G airwaves will interfere with their satellites. The World Meteorological Organisation (<a href="https://public.wmo.int/en/media/news/wmo-expresses-concern-about-radio-frequency-decision">WMO</a>) has expressed concern over the allocation of bandwidth — 24.25 to 27.5 GHz — for 5G technology during the World Radiocommunication Conference 2019 (WRC-19). They claim that it will severely hamper the functioning of a number of different technologies — including weather early warning systems. "The race to release 5G technology threatens to squeeze out other radio-frequency dependent technologies, including the world's critical national severe weather early warning systems," stated the WMO. And the Europen Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecast (ECMWF) agrees. "The agreement reached in Egypt falls far short of ensuring 5G applications do not interfere with weather observations at 24 GHz," it said. The fight over airwaves The world's radio spectrum is a limited resource. Only a narrow band is actually useful for communication purposes. Within that narrow band, everything and everyone — from radio, TV, mobile phones, and WiFi to aircraft, ships, and the military — need to function. According to ISRO, it needs the 26GHz bandwidth to operate its satellites. 5G services could interfere with the data being sent back and forth. The WMO and ECMWF are more concerned with the opposite end of the bandwidth between 23.6 to 24 GHz. "That could lead to nearly ten times more interfering out-of-band emissions than what the WMO had recommended allowing," said the international agency. The catch is that the new regulations for bandwidth use for 5G will only come into effect after 1 September 2027. "The risk, therefore, is that 5G could roll-out more quickly than initially anticipated, creating an unregulated increase in interference in the 24GHz," explained the WMO. This means that telecom operators will be incentivised to deploy their 5G technologies before 2027 because there will be no regulations till then. Even when the regulations are enforced, they won't be asked to replace their technology — only adhere to more stringent standards. "Potential effects of this could be felt across multiple impact areas including aviation, shipping, agricultural meteorology and warning of extreme events as well as our common ability to monitor climate change in the future," said WMO Secretary-General Petteri Taalas said in a statement.  More than half of North East Asia, Western Europe and North America will be on 5G by 2025, according to Ericsson’s latest Mobility Report. But in India, 5G will only account for 11% of total mobile subscriptions. The Indian region — which also includes Nepal and Bhutan — will be the slowest to adopt 5G, second only to the Middle East and Africa, where 5G penetration forecasted to be at 7%. "The mass-market adoption of advanced use cases fueled by 5G is expected later in India than in other regions," noted the report. Finally on the 4G bandwagon India’s 4G subscriptions are set to increase by 150 million during 2019 and surpass 2G technology. This means that the 4G network will now account for 57% of the mobile subscriptions by the end of the year, hitting the half-way mark for the first time. "As the transformation toward more advanced technologies continues in India, LTE is forecast to represent 80 percent of mobile subscriptions by the end of 2025," noted Ericsson’s report. It’s also a milestone for smartphones. Being more affordable has increased their usage from 48% to 54% over the past year. And, more are anticipated. "A total of 500 million additional smartphone users are expected in India by 2025," according to Ericsson. More smartphone users means more data consumption. Right now, India leads the region when it comes to usage per smartphone. By 2025, Ericsson forecasts are the traffic will triple. "Even if the traffic per existing smartphone user continues to grow significantly over time, the increase in the average traffic per smartphone is expected to moderate as more consumers in India acquire smartphones," noted the report. 5G’s many delays One of the primary reasons for the delay has been the pricing of the spectrum. Vodafone Idea, Airtel and Jio have been locked in a price war, bulking under debt and just got hit with outstanding licence fees — they claim that they can’t afford to buy 5G airwaves at the base price that the government has fixed for auctioning them. According to the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), India’s prices for the 5G spectrum are much higher than the international average. It’s not just that the airwaves are expensive. Telecom operators claim that revenue generation from 5G will be slow until use cases become more prevalent. The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) also threw a new wrench in the government’s plans. The agency announced that it needs the premium 26 GHz band — which is ideal for the 5G network — for their own weather satellites. Broken promises Ravi Shankar Prasad, India’s IT minister, announced that the government would auction the 5G spectrum within the next 100 days when the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won the 2019 general election. This was back in June. Months passed by and now, the commercial launch of 5G services is pegged to happen in 2020. Nonetheless, Prasad has assured stakeholders that the 5G auction will happen in the current financial year.

Apple's new iPhone 12 series with 5G launched starting at ₹ 69,999 along with HomePod Mini debut

<ul><li><keyword id="131553" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Intel-Capital">Intel Capital</keyword> has invested ₹1894.5 crore ($253.5 million) in <keyword id="3820" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mukesh-Ambani">Mukesh Ambani</keyword>’s Jio Platforms for a 0.39% stake. </li><li>Most of Intel Capital’s investments in the past have focussed on artificial intelligence (AI), including edge computing, cloud technology and network transformation — going from 4G to 5G. </li><li>Intel’s expertise in consumer electronics could also come in handy for the telecom giant if it forays into the world of laptops.</li></ul>Mukesh Ambani has scored yet another investment and this time it’s the investment arm of global tech and semiconductor major Intel corporation — Intel Capital. Intel Capital has invested ₹1894.5 crore ($253.5 million) in Jio for a 0.39% stake. “This move is more strategic rather than just an investment. It’s more of a pull rather than a push strategy,” Counterpoint analyst Tushar Pathak told Business Insider. Experts believe that Intel’s investment in Jio can help Reliance across three main verticals – Artificial Intelligence, the 5G push and a possible debut of a Jio laptop. Reliance too in a statement said that “Intel Capital invests globally in innovative companies with a focus on disruptive technology areas like cloud computing, artificial intelligence and 5G – opportunities where Jio is also innovating and investing for growth.” Using Intel’s AI expertise to manage data over 500 million subscribers Bernstein’s report from June estimated that Jio would <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/news/jio-to-capture-48-market-share-by-fy25-bernstein/articleshow/76420507.cms">capture nearly half the Indian market</a> by 2025 — calling the company the ‘new king of Indian telecommunications’. It forecasts that Jio’s subscriber base will jump from its current standing at 388 million subscribers to cross 500 million by 2023 to hit 609 million by 2025. “If that happens, it’s a massive amount of data on a particular platform. That is what is exciting these investors, especially someone like Intel Capital,” said Pathak. ISRO becomes the fifth best place to work in India - after it jumps five spots

New Delhi, Jan 21 () US-based Qualcomm on Tuesday said 4G will continue to be relevant over the next few years and unveiled a new lineup of mobile chipsets for 4G smartphones in the country.
The Qualcomm Snapdragon 720G, 662 and 460 promise to offer enhanced user experiences across connectivity, gaming and entertainment. 
"While we see a fast adoption of 5G across geographies globally, we do recognise the phenomenal boost that 4G has given towards enabling broadband connectivity for Indian consumers. 4G will stay relevant for quite sometime," Rajen Vagadia, vice-president and president, Qualcomm India, said.
He added that for regions like India, 4G will stay a key technology for connectivity.
"Our goal is to enable our partners to continue creating solutions that offer seamless connectivity access and exceptional mobile experiences," he said.
Asked about 5G, Vagadia said smartphones powered by the latest technology should make their way into the Indian market in the first half of this year. 
While these smartphones are expected to be available in the mid and premium range, they would become more affordable as they get more affordable, he said adding that roll out of 5G networks would also be an important factor. 
The new chipsets unveiled on Tuesday - which will be deployed by handset makers on smartphones across various price points - are designed to enable fast 4G connectivity speeds, deliver key Wi-Fi 6 features and integrated Bluetooth 5.1 with advanced audio via the Qualcomm FastConnect 6-series subsystems and support Dual-Frequency (L1 and L5) GNSS to improve location positioning accuracy and robustness.
These are also the first system-on-chip solutions to support Navigation with Indian Constellation (NavIC).
Developed by Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro), NavIC is the Indian version of GPS. Apart from popular GPS, there are other satellite navigation systems like GLONASS, Galileo and BeiDou. 
Chinese smartphone brands Xiaomi and Realme said they will soon launch devices with NavIC support, based on these new Snapdragon chipsets.
 "The availability of NavIC across multiple mobile platforms will help enhance the geolocation capabilities of smartphones in the region and bring the benefits of this indigenous solution to Indian consumers for their day-to-day use," ISRO Chairman K Sivan said. SR MR

On the other hand, the iPhone XR now costs Rs 47,900 for the 64GB version and the 128GB model retails for Rs 52,900. The iPhone SE 2020 now costs Rs 39,900 for the base model with 64GB internal storage, whereas the 128GB and the 256GB models cost Rs 44,900, and Rs 54,900, respectively. As a part of festive season offers, Apple is giving out free AirPods with iPhone 11, starting October 17. Amazon and Flipkart's Great Indian Festival and Big Billion Days are starting this week and both the e-commerce marketplaces are expected to provide new iPhone 11 at a price below Rs 50,000. Apple on Tuesday launched 4 new iPhone 12 models with 5G capability. The top versions -- iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max -- will be available in 128GB, 256GB and 512GB models in graphite, silver, gold, and pacific blue, starting at Rs 119,900 and Rs 129,900, respectively. iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Mini will be available in 64GB, 128GB and 256GB models in blue, green, black, white and red colours, starting at Rs 79,900 and Rs 69,900, respectively. Apple slashes prices for iPhone 11, iPhone XR, and iPhone SE 2020 in India

New Delhi, May 16 () Domestic telecom gear makers expect the government to clear their dues pending with state-owned telecom firms and come out with provisions to push home grown equipment in the networks, industry body TEMA said in a statement on Saturday.Telecom Equipment Manufacturers Association - which represents indigenous companies like Vihaan Networks, and Tejas Networks, among others - also requested for clarity on the government push for procurement from domestic vendors through public tender of up to Rs 200 crore.TEMA Chairman Emeritus NK Goyal said that it is beyond doubt that the COVID days have shown that the telecom sector has been at forefront for providing connectivity to all citizens in India.The chairman expects that the next package from Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman may come for the telecom, electronics, and ICT sectors."This sector is looking forward for package tomorrow in terms of specific enforcement of indigenously designed development and manufactured equipment, keeping in view of 'Atma Nirbhar Bharat" mission of our Hon'ble PM," Goyal said.The association expects the government to act for clearing about Rs 20,000 vendor dues pending with BSNL and MTNL as well as other telecom public sector firms."Another issue facing the telecom, ICT sector is large amounts of pending payments from BSNL,MTNL and other telecom PSUs and we hope that soon there will be policy guidelines for release of all pending payments," Goyal said.The body suggested that the telecom sector also looks forward for some relief to telecom service providers in terms of adjusted gross revenue, spectrum charges, licence and other fees and incentives to private operators that can be used for procurement of indigenously designed developed and manufactured telecom equipment."Lastly, while we talk of latest technologies of 4G,5G or may be 6G, but let us also appreciate that substantial part of our India specially in hills, NE, LWE, Aspirational Districts, rural areas etc. still remains uncovered and we hope at least 2G for them urgently," Goyal said.TEMA lauded the government decision to increase FDI in defence sector from 49 to 74 per cent and other reforms announced for Make-in-India for the sector, and level playing field for private companies in satellite launches, space-based services and use of ISRO facilities to the private sector.Indian space startup Pixxel said the government announcement to open up the space sector for private industry can go a long way in saving unnecessary costs and making the industry more competitive."This will also mean that a lot of space grade material manufacturing processes, that are not in the country right now such as multilayer thermal insulations, solar panels and batteries that were majorly procured from abroad will now see localisation due to the emergence of more domestic space firms," Pixxel founder and CEO Awais Ahmed said.He said that the announcement on future projects for planetary exploration is very important towards building India's very own Maxars, SpaceXs and Rocket Labs. "On the whole, today's announcement is a great first step that needs to be followed up by an independent regulatory authority executing on the vision and making sure these landmark announcements are realised," Ahmed said.
