The fake app and website look eerily like the original, which makes it difficult for end users to distinguish between the two. Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) is a state-owned service that allows users to book rail, air, bus and hotel tickets. The fake IRCTC app for Android smartphones goes by the name ‘irctcconnect.apk’ and is being circulated via WhatsApp and Telegram. Given that it’s very trivial for Android users to manually install an app using an apk file, IRCTC had to issue an advisory to warn users about the fake app. The fake IRCTC app used by hackers to target passengers also has an accompanying website – https://irctc.creditmobile.site – which looks to have been blocked now. “Fraudsters’ aim is to get sensitive net banking credentials, including UPI details and credit/debit card information, from victims who fall prey to the smishing attack,” the IRCTC warning said. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Android safety 101" comment="subhead" text="Android safety 101">Android safety 101</cmsannotation> One of the easiest ways of staying safe while using an Android device is by not clicking on unknown links or installing apps from unknown sources. <ul><li>Newer versions of Android require users to allow app installation from unknown sources to be enabled on a per-app basis. Users are recommended to always install apps from official sources like the Google Play store. </li><li>While clicking on links, ensure that you can determine their authenticity. If you cannot directly verify this, it is recommended that you search for the company’s website. Popular search engines like Google or Bing usually surface the official website as the top search results, so that is another way to make sure to verify the authenticity. </li><li>One of the most common vectors of stealing information and phishing attacks is via one-time passwords – if you receive an OTP without having requested it, simply ignore it and never share it with anyone. </li><li>Users are also recommended to always keep their apps and software up to date. </li><li>Android smartphones also come with app verification via a service called ‘Play Protect’. IRCTC warns of fake app and website scamming users out of their sensitive information—here’s how to stay safe

New Delhi, Motorola on Tuesday launched its latest <keyword id="28168" type="TECHNOLOGY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Smartphone">smartphone</keyword> 'Moto G9 Power' with a massive 6000mAh battery for ₹11,999 in India. The smartphone will be available in two colour variants, the vivid electric violet and the sophisticated metallic sage. "The phone will go on sale starting December 15, 12 noon onwards, exclusively on Flipkart," the company said in a statement. The smartphone features a 6.8-inch HD+ (720x1,640 pixels) IPS display with a 20.5:9 aspect ratio. The phone is powered by an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 662 SoC, coupled with 4GB RAM and 64GB of onboard storage that is expandable via microSD card (up to 512GB). The smartphone houses a 64MP primary sensor with an f/1.79 lens, 2MP secondary sensor with an f/2.4 macro lens and a 2MP depth sensor with f/2.4 lens. The device comes with a 16MP camera sensor at the front. Yet, a whopping 57% of the seats go vacant. Few years ago two ex-<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=IBM">IBM</a> engineers felt this had to change. 
 “We researched the railways data for trends and found a pattern. There was a possibility we could predict availability”, Dinesh Kumar Kotha, Co-founder, <keyword id="2935882" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="ConfirmTkt">Confirmtkt</keyword> says. 
 
The duo created an algorithm that considers historical data on key factors like month, holidays, week/weekend, train, type of journey to predict the possibility of you landing a confirmed ticket on the train of your choice. Their new feature ‘Alternates’ rolled out in first half of August claims to increase the chances many-folds. 
 
Mind, users still need to visit <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=IRCTC">IRCTC</a>'s official website or app to complete the booking. However, judging that over 95% Indian rail travelers are middle-class and rail prices are often a third of bus travel and a fraction of airfare, there is no lack of demand for such hacks in the travel industry. 
 
“<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Cleartrip">Cleartrip</a> wanted to redirect to booking to their website. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Yatra">Yatra</a> wants to use our technology. However, we want to focus on research and development initially. Monetization can wait. ”, Kotha says. 
 
The prediction accuracy was previously 75%. It has jumped to more than 95% as of now. 
 
“We are also working on predicting multi-train/break journeys. Alternative modes of transport can also be added. There are several options”, Kotha says. 
 
When asked if he has a time-frame in mind to monetize, Kotha agrees. “We’re experimenting on the best time to monetize. Our target is a million users. Currently we have around 2.7 lakh”, he says.

The curious part about this mishap for Flipkart reflects on the company’s inability to weather the storm which was predicted much earlier than it actually occurred. Before this, if one had to check for a particular train then they either had to goto www.indianrail.gov.in/ or www.irctc.co.in/. The <keyword id="8552990" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="miui-12-update">MIUI 12 update</keyword> will add smooth animations with improved details to the icons, new calendar features, AI calling, new privacy and security tools, multitasking features, animations and wallpapers, the company said in a statement. It also allows one to delete a screenshot automatically after sharing, which in turn helps one save space and maintain privacy. The new OS also comes with an ultra-battery saver which would enable a user to extend the phone's standby time and reduce power consumption. With this even at 5 per cent, the phone can last for an additional 5 hours with ultra-battery saver. Xiaomi has also added ‘Mi Light Core Animation' framework to ensure the system smoothness of the software.

And these apps, which bring convenience right at our fingertips, are getting bigger and better.  So, what next do they wish to deliver to Indian consumers? To understand this and to know more about the app market, we got into a candid conversation with <keyword id="1945241" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Joseph-Landes">Joseph Landes</keyword>, general manager, Developer &amp; Experience team, <keyword id="28250" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Microsoft-India">Microsoft India</keyword>. What role does your team play in India? 
We help organisations pave their way to the future leveraging the latest technology available. (Pauses and then explains) Don’t you always wonder when you are driving around the country like who put up that bridge, how it actually got from here to over there – like hanging off the edge, building the pieces – so what sort of bridge builders there are today. Similarly, in tech ecosystem, when you know there’s a product coming out like Windows 10, it is essential for an organization to enable an ecosystem for Windows 10. Developers should be acquainted with what Windows 10 is all about and what they can do with it. And this is where we come in. As these organisations analyse what role new technology can play in their business, we help them create an enabling ecosystem. 
 
What level of maturity <keyword id="1914129" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Microsoft-apps">Microsoft apps</keyword> have achieved in the Indian market? 
I fondly remember I came to India 3 years back, when we were getting ready for the launch of Windows 8. Our real big focus was on getting the apps into the store because at that time we didn’t have a very reputable app store. We had an app store in place, but there weren’t much stuff in it. So to gain more footage in India, we concentrated on bridging the app gap that people felt is missing on our store. And after 3 years, I feel good where we are currently. Now, I can claim there’s no Indian app that Android has and we don’t have. 
 
Did you make any changes to your <keyword id="2800227" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="global-app-strategy">global app strategy</keyword> for India? 
As I said before, when we came to India what we wanted to do was to bridge the app gap. And that is precisely what we did: eradicated the local app gap that existed. Our objective is to ensure that Indians to have a ‘wow’ experience on their Windows phone and for this we ensure that all their favourite apps available on other OS platforms are also available on Windows market. 
 
So, how many apps are there on your store? And which among those are your top apps in India? 
Today, we’ve 550,000 apps in the Windows store and most of them are relevant to the Indian consumers often. Naming our top apps is slightly difficult, as I don’t have exact numbers to quote. But on the basis of my experience, I can say IRCTC, Flipkart and Jabong are the most popular India-specific apps. Times news app and Gaana is also popular among Indian audiences. Apps that gain exception traction are the seasonal apps. For instance, when movies like Chennai Express, Dhoom or Krrish hit the theatres, their apps got popular with masses. The sad part, however, is that they eventually die down after a period of time. Obviously, I didn’t include global apps like Facebook, which are popular with people across the globe. 
 
Would we get to see some vernacular Microsoft apps designed specifically for India? 
Well…vernacularity is not one of the big pillars that we want to focus on. Yes, it is a nice and important thing to have, and I can certainly ask developers to write apps that are relevant for their local language, but we don’t plan to do it extensively at this stage. 
As of now, our focus is to cloud enable apps and help developers make universal apps. 
 
Did you observe any differences in the Indian app market from the global market? 
Yes, there indeed is. For Indian audiences, the user interface, graphical interface, design...all matters. After having worked with Indian developers, I can undoubtedly say that they are very good in coding and technicalities—albeit there is some of improvement in terms of design. 
 
Having said that, I still believe, the next big app market would come from India. This country has got the talent that is needed to create wonderful apps like Angry Birds, Candy Crush or more such. I am just waiting to see a brand new gaming app from the Indian developers. 
 
Do Indian consumers app-buying pattern differs from the global audiences? 
The buying pattern in India is very different from many other countries of the world. Mostly, people want something cheaper. I am not generalising this, but this holds true. The trend here is that people are keener to have a free app with some in app purchase. If you look at Xbox, it comes free with some sort of in app purchase. 
 
However, I have seen purchase going up wherever there is direct operator billing system in place. 
 
And, finally what do is your take on the ongoing native vs Cloud mobile apps debate? 
For me, there is a symbiotic collaboration between mobility and cloud. Though native apps are great, I personally feel it will be Cloud mobile apps that would pave way to the future where smartphone won’t look that exciting unless it has great cloud servicing connectivity. Even today, some amazing cloud mobile apps are available on the MS platform. Be it Skype, Bing or One Drive Office 365 – all offer mobility and enable high productivity.
