He explained why Dropbox favors memos to slideshows:"We've all been in those meetings where someone's presenting, you've already read the slide, but you have to wait for the person verbally to catch up, or someone interrupts and asks a question, but the question's answered a couple slides later," he said on an <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KSeraZxSAbQ">episode</a> of the podcast The Logan Bartlett Show released Friday. "And one way or another, the presentation format kind of limits how many people you can have in a room to have an effective conversation."Houston went on to say that meetings centered on PowerPoint presentations can become more about the delivery of the slideshow than its content."How compelled you are by the presentation is less about the merits of their arguments and more about their skill at presenting and thinking on their feet, so there's a bit of a distortion or bias that comes in that way," he said. "And then conversely, narratives work really well because they have a much higher bitrate, so most people can read a lot faster than they can hear."Amazon founder Bezos's distaste for bullet points and PowerPoints reportedly dates back to 2004, when he banned them from senior leadership meetings. Instead, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-ceo-jeff-bezos-memo-advice-2018-4">he asks for a 6-page "narratively structured" memo</a>, and the meeting kicks off with attendees silently reading it.Bezos has said <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jeff-bezos-management-advice-running-perfect-meeting">he likes "a crisp document and a messy meeting"</a> and that he favors memos because people can get away with "hiding a lot of sloppy thinking in bullet points."At Dropbox, they begin meetings reading the document for about 10 to 20 minutes, and attendees leave in-line comments in Dropbox Paper, Houston said, noting they've even put a form at the end of the pre-read where attendees put their overall reactions and a rating.Instead of vague and disjointed context, "suddenly everybody has the same kind of high-def 4K view of what are we talking about, what is the plan, and you know everybody has that kind of fact base. And it's super efficient to download that, you can have up to 15, 20 people in a room and have it still be efficient," he said. "In that 10 or 20 minutes, you can get much higher fidelity download to everybody in the room than you could get in an hour of just talking about it and interrupting each other."Houston acknowledged that the method can raise challenges, though, including being "very time-consuming for the writer.""It's very hard for the writer, easier for the reader, but that's generally a good trade-off, especially in a bigger company, because there's a lot more readers than writers," he commented. Often, "it's a lot more efficient to just give people the source of truth rather than verbally 'game of telephone' broadcasting it over and over again."Another possible issue, Houston said, is that people can "sort of forget that the point of the narrative is to help get the work done; the point is not to write the narrative itself.""If people are having the pre-meeting before the meeting and there's a lot of bureaucracy around the document, then you can lose the plot that way," he said.

India currently ranks the highest for IPv6 adoption globally, according to the <a href="https://www.google.com/intl/en/ipv6/statistics.html#tab=per-country-ipv6-adoption">latest statistics</a> collected by Google. India is leading with a 61.23% adoption rate of IPv6 so far, followed by Malaysia (54.76%) and French Guiana (52.34%). The IPv6 adoption rate has been seeing a steady increase currently hovering around 36% globally. India ranking the highest for IPv6 adoption means that here users experience very few issues when connecting to IPv6-enabled websites, according to the Google data. The government of India has been quite active in the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/enterprise/news/nixi-is-pushing-india-towards-wider-adoption-of-ipv6-to-fuel-digital-india/articleshow/82144714.cms" data-type="tilCustomLink">adoption of IPv6 across the country</a>. It released the first roadmap of IPv6 adoption back in 2010 which required all major services providers to offer IPv6 services, and also state and central government departments to upgrade to IPv6. IPv6 is the more advanced version of the Internet Protocol which will eventually replace IPv4. Every device connected to the internet requires its own IP address to communicate with other devices. IPv6 is the sixth revision of the Internet Protocol and it was created in 1998. Why the transition from IPv6 to IPv4? The main reason behind moving from IPv4 to IPv6 is the lack of addresses the former supports. IPv4 uses a 32-bit addressing system that currently supports around 4.3 billion addresses which is clearly not enough given the number of devices and internet users growing around the world. This is where IPv6 comes in as it uses a 128-bit addressing system which makes it possible to support more devices. India continues to lead in IPv6 expansion with a 61.23% adoption rate globally

Despite the challenges facing the segment, EVs accounted for a record 7.6% of all cars sold in the US in 2023 while the number of charging stations hit 61,000. While the rate of growth has slowed, industry experts and executives have said they expect some EV share to grow to 8% in 2024 as new models continue to hit the market, helping to keep their <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ev-electric-car-deals-leases-kia-hyundai-tesla-ford-2024-6" target="_blank">average price falling.</a> While there are plenty of shoppers interested in an electric vehicle, the options on sale today are often too big, too expensive, or not practical enough to replace a gas-powered car. Car companies are already <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/automakers-back-to-the-drawing-board-ev-plans-2024-2">scrambling to adjust</a> to a sudden change in the electric vehicle market in order to draw more new customers. The slowdown in electric vehicle sales growth has rocked everyone from Ford to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-sales-miss-ev-slowdown-new-wave-customers-2024-4">Tesla</a>, denting sales and forcing executives to rethink their long-term plans for electric vehicles. While the industry has made great strides in electric vehicle range and battery charging times, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ev-charging-needs-to-improve-amenities-offerings-stores-2024-6">huge holes in the infrastructure</a> make certain areas nearly impossible to navigate without a gas-powered engine. McKinsey's study found this issue to be particularly acute in the US, which had the second-highest rate of respondents say they're considering ditching their EV. America's high placement shouldn't come as too much of a surprise. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/electric-vehicle-range-ev-charging-station-infrastructure-issues-2024-5">Charging infrastructure here has long been a hot-potato issue</a>, which has held back efforts to build more chargers. While a push from the automotive industry to fund charging infrastructure has led to a boom in public charging stations in the last two years, these have largely been money-losing ventures. On the government side, the Biden Administration has set aside $7.5 billion for charging infrastructure with a vow to add 500,000 EV charging stations by 2030. The first two times staff returned Scout to the shelter. But the third time was the charm for the mutt: the nursing home staff decided to adopt Scout, the <a href="https://www.freep.com/story/news/columnists/john-carlisle/2023/08/29/dog-nursing-home-bellaire-michigan-meadow-brooke-medical-care-facility/70649836007/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Detroit Free Press</a> reported. Now, Scout spends his days visiting residents, getting belly scratches, and <a href="https://www.insider.com/guides/pets/best-dog-treats">snacking on biscuits</a>. But Scout's happy ending is out of reach for too many shelter animals, as national euthanasia rates for shelter pets have climbed to a <a href="https://www.shelteranimalscount.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Q2-Report.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">three-year high</a>, according to Shelter Animals Count.Shelters are "having to make tough decisions that they hadn't had to make in many years," Stephanie Filer, executive director of SAC, told Insider. Luckily, there are ways the public can help — <a href="https://www.insider.com/fostering-animals-reasons-why-you-should-2021-12">beyond just adopting pets</a>.<h2>More animals are going into shelters than coming out</h2>The <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/animal-shelters-overwhelmed-due-to-soaring-inflation-2022-11">animal shelter system in the US</a> is very complex, Filer said, but it boils down to basic math: for the system to be balanced, the number of animals leaving a shelter needs to be higher than the number of animals coming in. Right now, that's not the case. The total number of cats and dogs coming into shelters is up 7.6% so far this year compared to 2021, while the number of animals leaving shelters has only increased 4.6%. When <a href="https://www.insider.com/red-flags-adopting-a-dog-2018-10">animals can't be adopted</a> out or held in the shelter because of health concerns or available space and resources, they may need to be euthanized, Filer said, although euthanasia can also happen because the animal has a health issue. <h2>More animals have been euthanized this year compared to 2021</h2>So far this year, 8.5% of animals that enter the shelter system have been euthanized, up nearly 2% from 2021, according to SAC. While the percentages may seem small, with an estimated <a href="https://www.aspca.org/helping-people-pets/shelter-intake-and-surrender/pet-statistics" target="_blank" rel="noopener">6.3 million</a> animals moving through the shelter system each year, they add up. There's no precise data on the exact number of euthanasias.The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals estimates more than 920,000 shelter animals are euthanized each year, whereas the<a href="http://bestfriends.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> Best Friends Animal Society</a>, which works toward no-kill policies, estimated the number was closer to<a href="https://bestfriends.org/no-kill-2025" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> 378,000 dogs and cats</a> in 2022. SAC is working on a more scientific approach to tracking euthanasia rates to help clarify the large range, Filer said. <h2>You don't have to adopt, you can volunteer or donate</h2>Of course, the best way to support animal shelters is to <a href="https://www.insider.com/pet-adoption-guide-what-to-do-2019-6">adopt a pet</a>, which opens space and resources for new animals, Filer said. But there are other ways to help shelter pets:Foster: <a href="https://www.insider.com/animal-shelters-encouraging-people-to-foster-pet-during-coronavirus-outbreak-2020-3">Temporarily fostering a pet</a> in your home not only opens space in shelters, it also gives animals the chance to learn how to live in a house with humans, again — which in turn decreases their risk of being returned to a shelter, Julie Castle, CEO of Best Friends Animal Society, told Insider by email.Transport: About half of euthanasia occurs in <a href="https://network.bestfriends.org/research-data/research/state-us-animal-sheltering-2019#:~:text=The%20five%20states%20in%20which,positive%20outcomes%20reveal%20continued%20progress" target="_blank" rel="noopener">five states</a>: Texas, California, North Carolina, Florida, and Louisiana, Castle said. Oftentimes, shelter animals in those states are transported to organizations with availability — that's happened to more than 11% of pets that have entered shelters this year. <a href="https://resources.bestfriends.org/article/pet-transport-resources" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Volunteers help transport animals</a> relatively short distances, in order to get them to shelters or foster homes where they're more likely to be adopted. Volunteer: Volunteering can help alleviate the strain of staff shortages that have hit shelters just like other industries, Castle said. "When staff delegate tasks to volunteers, it allows them to dedicate more time to facilitating adoptions, managing intakes, and advocating for their resident animals," she said. Donate: More resources help shelters save more lives, so donations are always appreciated, Castle said. Monetary donations are always needed and so are supplies — although it's best to check with your local shelter before dropping off items. "Word of mouth through friends and family members is a powerful tool in helping animals get adopted," she said. Focus on details that make the pet unique — like large paws or a distinct jawline — and add touches like a blanket or toy that can help people envision this animal out of the shelter and in their homes, Eliazarov said. Reach out for help: If you can't afford your pets' food or veterinary care, local programs can help provide subsidized care and supplies. Always reach out to your local shelter early, Filer said, before you think you might need to surrender your pet. <h2>After being adopted, Scout was named resident of the month at his nursing home</h2>The rates of euthanasia at shelters have dropped by <a href="https://www.aspca.org/helping-people-pets/shelter-intake-and-surrender/pet-statistics" target="_blank" rel="noopener">more than half</a> since 2011. While the uptick this year is concerning, experts say that it doesn't undo that progress. With a little extra attention, they say more pets can have a happy ending like Scout, who was voted "Resident of The Month" at Meadow Brook Medical Care Center earlier this year. "We really need people to come out and adopt, foster, volunteer and donate," Filer said. "Those are the four crucial pillars" to saving lives.

An <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-get-lower-cost-effective-mortgage-rates-2023-12">assumable mortgage</a> allows qualifying buyers to acquire the interest rate, current principal balance, and other conditions of a seller's existing loan. Not all loans can be assumed. The essay has been edited for length and clarity.I grew up in the Portland area, but moved to Boise in 2017. In 2022, my husband and I decided to move back to Oregon.My husband had applied for some jobs in Portland and got a position, but we had just refinanced our Boise home. Since we had signed a no-flip clause, we couldn't sell it until April 2022.We planned that he would move to Portland and live with a friend while our son and I stayed back and got the house ready to be sold in April. Then, we would join him and buy a house.But in January 2022, I was diagnosed with stage four non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. A family friend gave us the idea to buy an RV and live on my parents' land in Oregon. We lived there for eight months. It was pretty rough, but we made it work.In March of 2022, we started looking at houses through our realtor. I was in the middle of chemo, but on the days that I would feel good, we would meet up with brokers.One suggested, "To get the type of mortgage loan that you want, you need to wait until you're back to work." So, we decided to pause our home search until then. While waiting, we got our credit in a good spot. When August came around and I got a job, we started seriously looking at houses.<h2>Finding an affordable home to buy was difficult</h2>We wanted to live in the suburb that my parents lived in, called Tigard, but the area was too expensive for us and the real estate market was fairly competitive.It's funny how an area can be a nice, family-friendly, affordable place to live, and then all of a sudden it becomes overpopulated and it's not nearly as reasonable as it used to be.We eventually decided to look in the Sherwood area instead. At this point, I had beaten cancer and was in remission. My husband and I were excited that we could take the next step and buy a new house.We qualified for a substantial loan through our mortgage company, but we didn't want our monthly payments to be too high. We set our budget for a home at no more than $450,000 — but even that was a bit of a stretch.<div type="image" title="The Yzaguirre's Oregon home." height="4032" width="3024" msid="108627895" hostid="261" sizebytes="833354"></div>As we looked, we really couldn't find many homes that checked all the boxes for that amount.But in September 2022, we found a townhouse that was on the market for $416,000. On a flier for the home, its seller had written that if we wanted to assume her loan, she was locked in at 2.5%.That didn't necessarily draw us in because we didn't quite know what that meant.I was more interested in the fact that it was a 1,500-square-foot townhouse that had everything we wanted, like a backyard, a big garage, and an open floor plan with hardwood floors.At the time, I believe mortgage rates were close to 6%. If we had a traditional mortgage, our monthly payment would have been about $3,000 a month. I remember being like "Okay, that's pretty high, but I think we can make it work. We're just going to have to be really careful."<h2>An assumable mortgage was too irresistible to pass up</h2>We told our realtor about the home and asked her what an assumable mortgage was. She said "You'll have to talk to our mortgage broker. I don't really have any experience with that and don't know what it entails."I asked the mortgage broker, and he admitted, "Well, we haven't dealt with this in probably about 30 years, so I'm not entirely familiar with the process. But essentially, when you assume a loan, you're taking over the seller's mortgage. If you qualify, you can adopt their locked-in rate, and you don't have to pay current mortgage rates."He warned us that the seller's mortgage company was not going to hold our hand through the process. But if we were willing to put in a rigorous amount of work and do a lot of bugging, we should definitely try it because it would save us a lot of money.I did the math. The seller was locked in at 2.5%, so if we qualified to assume the loan, our mortgage would be a little over $2,100 a month versus the over $3,000 we would be paying with a traditional mortgage at current market rates. It would save us over $40,000 in the long run. That would give us wiggle room and allow us to continue our lifestyle instead of having to scale back.It sounded amazing, so my husband and I decided to pursue the loan assumption.<h2>It's not easy assuming a loan — and it took forever</h2>In March 2023, we purchased our home for $418,900 and made a downpayment of $48,000. The home had a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage, with 28 years left on a $383,000 Federal Housing Administration (FHA) loan.We worked with Flagstar to assume the mortgage and they assigned us an advocate. He was really nice and helped us through the process.In the end, we ended up submitting over 200 documents, and the process took three full months.At a certain point, my husband was over it and just wanted to go with a normal mortgage. Austin was the first Texas city to launch a taxpayer-funded <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/universal-basic-income-texas-houston-harris-county-covid-relief-2023-12">guaranteed-income program</a>, which served 135 low-income families by giving them $1,000 monthly.
