A user-modified <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/news/the-first-iphone-modded-to-have-a-usb-c-charging-port-is-being-auctioned-for-over-85000-but-the-buyer-cant-use-it/articleshow/87528431.cms" data-type="tilCustomLink">iPhone X </a>with a working USB-C port, complete with full data transfer and charging capabilities was sold for $86,001 (about Rs 64 lakh) at an auction.<br /><br />Created by engineering student Ken Pillonel, the USB-C <keyword id="4082869" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="iphone-x" source="Orion">iPhone X</keyword> was unveiled in October and instantly captured the imagination of iPhone users champing at the bit for a more modern connector, AppleInsider reported.<br /><br />Pillonel released a video explainer of the build in early November and, as expected, the process was more than a simple parts swap.<br /><br />In addition to reverse engineering Apple's C94 connector, Pillonel had to fabricate a custom circuit board, test and route connections, and squeeze USB-C parts into an already crammed case.<br /><br />The final result was put up for auction on eBay with bids quickly soaring north of $85,000, the report said.<br /><br />As noted by Gizmodo, the auction ended today with a winning bid of $86,001. A total of 116 bids were placed, most of which came within the first three days.<br /><br />Pillonel guarantees that the iPhone is functional, but warned against restoring, updating or erasing the device. Further, he said the buyer should not use the heavily modified iPhone as their primary device and stipulated that its case not be opened.

On Wednesday, the price for the <a href="https://gizmodo.com/the-world-s-first-iphone-with-a-working-usb-c-port-is-n-1847988505">modified phone lingered at just $5,000</a>, and with seven days left on the auction, the price could skyrocket even more. </p><p>"I'm quite surprised by the reaction," Pillonel told Insider. "I believe the reason it's doing so well right now is that there hasn't really been a new collectible related to Apple put up for sale in recent times. So people who haven't had the chance to own an object like that are very interested in it. They view it as an investment."</p><p>He set minimum requirements for the phone, including that it must be able to charge and data transfer and that the rest of the phone must be functional. </p><p>Though Pillonel said his design is a working iPhone, whoever wins the phone at auction is prohibited from actually using the phone, since the device is meant as a proof of concept, according to the eBay listing. </p><p>In the Youtube video, Pillonel said he bought the cheapest iPhone he could find - an iPhone X - but couldn't find any advice online for the project he wanted to attempt, except for people warning others not to try it.</p><p>The Youtube video shows off the long journey to the finished product, where challenges included having to reverse engineer a fake Apple Lightning connector and getting a <keyword id="12003680" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="custom" source="Orion">custom</keyword> circuit board. </p><p>"It's going to be harder than I thought," he said, only a few minutes into the video. </p><p>Pillonel said his interest in USB-C ports started a few years ago, <a href="https://www.google.com/search?q=usb+c+port+ewaste&amp;rlz=1C5CHFA_enUS972US972&amp;oq=usb+c+port+ewaste&amp;aqs=chrome..69i57j33i10i160l2.2568j0j1&amp;sourceid=chrome&amp;ie=UTF-8=chrome&amp;ie=UTF-8">noting that the EU has proposed that all electronics should come with the USB-C charging port to cut down on e-waste</a>. </p><p>"I believe the iPhone is one of the most-used consumer electronics device in the world that hasn't made the switch yet. Quite a few people are frustrated about that, including me," Pillonel said. "Being an engineer, I'm always eager to learn new skills, and in this project I saw a lot of opportunity to do that. So for those reasons combined, I thought: 'Maybe I should be the one to do it!'"</p><p>Though he posted a Github repository with the details needed to customize the phone, this isn't a mod for the faint of heart. <a href="https://kenp.io/">Pillonel is a master's student in robotics at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology</a>, who said he likes to tinker with 3D printing and works as an engineering consultant in his spare time. </p><p>"If things go well it means that I will be able to continue doing similar projects, and that is what I'm most excited about," he said. </p>

On the other hand, images smaller than 256x256 pixels are ignored to avoid backing up thumbnails and icon images. Some newer cameras are getting close to these image limits. Spend more than three minutes with any <keyword id="6355645" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="android">Android</keyword> fanboy, and you'll quickly learn that the real beauty of Google's operating system lies in the potential to customize it.<br />

Any problem can be solved by downloading enough apps. Nowhere is that more true than for Android's homescreen – so we've rounded up the best alternative Android launchers for your modding pleasure.<br />
<br /> On an Android phone, the launcher is the app responsible for the home screen, the app 'grid', and launching the aforementioned apps. Phones generally come with either the stock Google launcher, or more commonly, a launcher whacked on top by a hardware manufacturer like <keyword id="10591" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Samsung">Samsung</keyword>.<br />

But, if you don't get on with your phone's default launcher, installing a new one just takes a quick visit to the Google Play Store.<br />
<br />
<strong>1. Google Now Launcher</strong><br /> Google's very own stock <keyword id="1658712" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Android-launcher">Android launcher</keyword> is now up for grabs – but just because it's the Android standard, doesn't mean it's boring. For your money (well, actually, it's free), you get easy access to Google Now, button-free voice controls, and enough transparent window-bars to make you think you're back in Windows Vista.<br />

It's compatible straight out of the box with all Nexus and Google Play Edition devices, and two minutes with a computer will get it running on all Android 4.x handsets. Just be careful what you say around it – the Big G's always listening, probably.<br />

<strong>2. Nova Launcher</strong><br />
Nova and Apex are the two standout Android launchers – both strike an excellent balance between having enough features to customise things, without bogging you down with unfeasibly long options lists and 17 levels of sub-menu hell.<br />

Nova's arguably the better of the two, with a few more options available in the free version (there is also a Prime version), and slightly better performance – but really, we're splitting tiny Android hairs trying to find a difference between the two.<br />

<strong>3. Apex</strong><br />
Apex Launcher, just like Nova, blends smooth performance and ease-of-use with a good level of customisation to create a genuinely appealing alternative to most standard Android launchers.<br />

<br /> Standout features on Apex include a superb tablet mode (finally allowing <keyword id="1118355" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nexus-7">Nexus 7</keyword> owners to rotate the home screen); and the Pro version has the fantastic Apex Notifier service, which pushes notifications to a widget on your home screen. (Although, Notifier requires running an extra app in the background, which is a small drain on battery life.) Once again, the Pro version does cost money, so it's worth downloading the free version first.<br />

<strong>4. Launcher Pro</strong><br />
Launcher Pro is aimed at users with phones that are yet to taste the frozen goodness of Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich, and are still stuck with Gingerbread.<br />

Although it lacks some of the bells and whistles of its more advanced stablemates, Launcher Pro is a solid upgrade from the stock launcher, with much faster scrolling and more customisation options, and even some sleek tricks like unlimited widget resizing in the full-fat, paid-for version.<br />

<strong>5. Buzz Launcher</strong><br />
Buzz Launcher packs the standard set of customisation options, but with a killer advantage: a user-created library of thousands of themes and widgets you can browse, download and tinker with. Whereas other launchers feel like masterpieces of efficiency – trying to find you the app you want, with minimum hassle – Buzz is all about the aesthetics.<br />

<br /> There are certainly more powerful launchers out there, but if you're all about matching the colour of your shoelaces to your cravat (and don't have an <keyword id="6354606" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="iPhone">iPhone</keyword>), then this is probably the launcher for you.<br />

<strong>6. Action Launcher Pro</strong><br />
Action Launcher has some nifty, unique features – stuff like a quick-access set of shortcuts (all customizable, of course), special gestures for launching apps from within folders, and a cool one-touch method of creating widgets from apps.<br />

Sadly, you have to pay the requisite couple of quid for the premium version if you want to get your hands on the goodies.<br />

<strong>7. ADW Launcher</strong><br />
ADW's probably the ultimate modder's launcher – anything you want to tweak is tweakable, from the particular shade of Gmail red, to the precise gesture needed to open an app.<br />

Sadly, it all comes at a price – ADW is complicated to use and sluggish compared to other offerings. More worryingly, development has ground to a halt, with no new releases to support versions of Android after 4.1.<br />

<strong>8. Facebook Home</strong><br /> Facebook Home is <keyword id="6354630" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mark-Zuckerberg">Mark Zuckerberg</keyword>'s mess of a Facebook takeover for Android. It serves a single purpose: making sure you share every waking moment of your life with your 639 closest friends.<br />
<br />
As such, Home turns your lock screen and home screen into a torrent of Facebook statuses; whether or not that's an improvement depends on how witty your friends are. On the upside, though, it's a beautifully designed app, with slick graphics and user interfaces, provided your handset's got the horsepower to run it.<br />

<strong>9. Next Launcher</strong><br />
Some will consider Next Launcher jaw-droppingly cool – a 3D launcher that's completely different to the standard grid-with-some-widgets-whacked-on-top. Of course, it's insanely impractical and a complete battery hog, but it might just impress a girl at the bar on Friday night. However, it costs more than a Blu-ray, which is money that could be better spent buying drinks at the aforementioned bar instead.<br />

<strong>10. Zeam</strong><br />
Zeam is at the other end of the spectrum to the rest of these launchers – all the developers seem to care about is speed. It's the stripped-out racing version, ditching pretty much all the customization options or swanky floating menus of the other versions, in favour of a minimalist code-base.<br />

The upside of course is super-smooth performance, even on the oldest, crummiest phones around. If you're looking for a speed boost for a handset running Gingerbread (that's Android 2.x to you and us), Zeam fits the bill pretty well, and it's also free.<br />

15 best tech accessories of CES 2020 - from chargers and trackers to pocket translators

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Motorola</span></p><p class="caption">Motorola says this screen won't crack easily.</p></div><p></p></div></div>Motorola has made its latest high-end smartphone official.</p><p>It's called the Moto Z2 Force Edition, and its headline feature is a purportedly "shatterproof" display.</p><p>Motorola has touted this kind of design with past devices like the Moto Z Force and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/motorola-droid-turbo-2-has-shatterproof-screen-2015-10" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Droid Turbo 2</a>, and generally speaking <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/motorola-phone-shatterproof-droid-turbo-2-test-2015-11" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">it's done well</a> to keep those phones more durable than usual. You <em>should</em> be able to drop the Z2 Force without having to worry about cracking the screen, though the rest of the device will still likely scuff up.</p><p>The rest of the Moto Z2 Force falls in line with other flagship phones like <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/samsung-galaxy-s8-review-2017-4" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Samsung Galaxy S8</a> and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/htc-u11-phone-review-2017-6" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">HTC U11</a>, so it should be suitably fast. Here's a quick rundown of the specs:</p><ul><li>A 5.5-inch AMOLED display with a sharp 2560 x 1440 resolution. Being AMOLED means it should have deeper colors than the LED screens of devices like the iPhone, though it's not the "bezel-less" type of screen you'd find on a Galaxy S8. </li><li>A Snapdragon 835 chip, the strongest in Qualcomm's series, and 4 GB of RAM</li><li>64 GB of storage, with up to 512 GB more possible through a microSD card</li><li>A pair of 12-megapixel rear cameras. Motorola says this'll allow you to play with depth of field effects, similar to those <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/portrait-mode-iphone-7-plus-review-2016-10" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">available on the iPhone 7 Plus</a>.</li><li>A 5-megapixel selfie camera</li></ul><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Motorola</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><ul><li>A 2,730 mAh battery, which is a ways less than the 3,500 mAh unit in last year's model. <span>There is some level of fast charging, though. </span></li><li>Instead, Motorola has traded that battery life for thinness. That may not be a popular choice, but the company says the Z2 Force is 13% thinner and 12% lighter than its predecessor. That amounts to 6.1mm. The Galaxy S8, by comparison, measures 8mm - though it's still hard to call that phone <em>thick</em>.</li><li>Android 7.1 Nougat, which is close to the latest version of Google's mobile operating system. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/moto-g5-plus-review-lenovo-best-cheap-phone-2017-3" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Motorola has one</a> of the cleaner takes on Android, though it isn't especially fast at issuing software and security updates since being <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/lenovo-to-buy-motorola-2014-1" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">acquired by Lenovo</a> a few years back.</li><li>No official water-resistance, but Motorola says it'll have a level of "water protection" that lets it survive in light rain and the like.</li><li>No headphone jack, just <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/life-without-the-headphone-jack-2016-7" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">like last year's Moto Z</a>. </li></ul><p>The Moto Z2 Force looks much like other <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/moto-z-droid-review-2016-8" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">devices in the Moto Z</a> line. That means it has a set of connectors on its back that allows the phone to connect to Motorola's various "<a href="https://www.motorola.com/us/moto-mods" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Moto Mod</a>" modular accessories. You can snap on a game controller or wireless charging case, for instance, and have it work with minimal setup.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Motorola</span></p><p class="caption">One new "Moto Mod" lets you attach a 360-degree camera, but costs a whopping $300.</p></div><p></p></div></div>These Mods tend to work well, but remain iffy values given that they're tied to one specific set of devices. If you ever want to leave Moto, you leave all the accessories you paid for as well.</p><p>Last year's Moto Z Force was only available on Verizon, but Motorola says it will sell versions of the Z2 Force for all of the major carriers in the US starting on August 10. It won't come cheap, though: Pricing varies by carrier, but the phone will cost around $750 either way. On Verizon, for instance, it's <a href="https://www.verizonwireless.com/smartphones/moto-z2-force/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">available outright</a> for $756.</p><p>The wider availability could help Motorola get the Z2 Force in more hands, but the company will continue to face stiff competition from Samsung and the rest of an increasingly saturated smartphone market, which will <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/apple-iphone-8-google-pixel-2-galaxy-note-8-coming-soon-2017-7" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">likely include new devices</a> from Apple, Samsung and Google in the coming months. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/essential-phone-modular-accessories-failure-andy-rubin-2017-6" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Motorola said last month</a> that it was "on track" to sell three million Moto Z devices within the line's first year on the market.</p><p>Still, if you're the clumsy type, you might find the Moto Z2 Force appealing. Motorola just announced a super-thin smartphone with a 'shatterproof' display

<p><strong><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Motorola</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></strong></p><ul><li><strong>Amazon is selling the first phones that can access Alexa by pressing a smartphone's physical buttons. </strong></li><li><strong>They offer the easiest way to access Alexa on a smartphone.</strong></li><li><strong>The Prime Exclusive Moto G6 Play is a great device, but the Prime Exclusive Moto Z3 Play can be easily outdone by spending $80 more on the OnePlus 6.</strong></li></ul><p>Amazon announced on Friday that it's adding the <a href="https://www.amazon.com/dp/B079YTK8XV">Prime Exclusive Moto G6 Play</a> and <a href="https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07C37RCF4">Prime Exclusive Moto Z3 Play</a> to its Amazon Prime Exclusive lineup, and they come with a trick that no other smartphone has.</p><p>You can double-press the power button to summon Amazon's smart voice assistant, Alexa. </p><p>That's pretty significant for anyone who uses Alexa, and a lot of people do. </p><p>It's estimated that 16% of the US population own a smart speaker as of January 2018, according to <a href="http://nationalpublicmedia.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/The-Smart-Audio-Report-from-NPR-and-Edison-Research-Fall-Winter-2017.pdf">NPR and Edison Research</a>. Of that 16%, 11% own an Alexa-powered device, like the Amazon Echo or Sonos One. That's a little over four million people who use Alexa. <div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Elaine Thompson/AP</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>On other smartphones, you could always use Alexa by going into the Alexa app. But the Amazon Prime Exclusive Moto G6 Play and Z3 Play make it easier by letting you double-press the power button when the phone is unlocked. Amazon is essentially reducing the amount of steps to access Alexa on the Prime Exclusive Moto G6 Play and Moto Z3 Play. </p><p>Other phones have dedicated buttons for smart voice assistants. Samsung's Galaxy phones controversially have a dedicated button for its Bixby voice assistant, which isn't particularly popular. And the button can't be re-mapped to summon a different assistant, like the superior Google Assistant or Amazon's Alexa. The LG G7 has a dedicated button for Google Assistant, too. </p><h2>Alexa aside, are these phones any good?</h2><p><a href="https://www.amazon.com/electronics-store/b/?ie=UTF8&amp;node=14613304011">Amazon's Prime Exclusive phones</a> can usually be found outside of Amazon, but the Prime Exclusive models come with a nice little discount in exchange for coming pre-loaded with some Amazon apps, including Prime Music, Prime Video, and Prime Photos. </p><p>The $190 Prime Exclusive Moto G6 Play is on the lower-end of the mid-range spectrum in terms of performance and features, but it has some appealing benefits. Combined with a power-efficient processor and display, the Moto G6 Play's 4,000mAh offers a 36-hour battery life, according to Motorola, which is higher than most high-end smartphones. </p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Motorola</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>The $450 Prime Exclusive Moto Z3 Play is on the higher-end of the mid-range spectrum, with decently powerful performance and and extensive features when combined with Motorola's modules called "Moto Mods." Some modules include a larger battery, a stereo speaker, and even a mini projector.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Motorola/Amazon</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Both the Prime Exclusive Moto G6 Play and Z3 Play also run a near-stock version of Android that's leaner, cleaner, and simpler than most versions of Android you'd find on other phones.</p><p>Motorola make the best mid-range devices we're aware of because they come with good design, performance, and features at a great value. Anyone looking for a good smartphone without the high-end price tag should check out Motorola's latest G6 series smartphones, whether it's the Prime Exclusive model or the regular <a href="https://www.motorola.com/us/products/moto-g-play-gen-6?cid=us:sem:2b7gdz&amp;utm_source=Google&amp;utm_medium=PPC&amp;utm_campaign=Brand_MotoG_Exact&amp;utm_content=Moto_G6_Play&amp;utm_term=moto_g6_play&amp;ds_rl=1260444&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQjwvLLZBRDrARIsADU6ojBAej6qkon5HwOYH8cNO6xfUnvBqmzsmqQjiDFrUv1yrcY3ygFWHFAaAt2IEALw_wcB&amp;dclid=CND54M2_59sCFcUNNwodBlUCVw">$200 Motorola model</a>. </p><p>With that said, both the regular or Prime Exclusive Moto Z3 is a little harder to recommend for its price tag. Amazon is selling the first phones that let you summon Alexa with a physical button

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Last month, I reviewed a&#xa0;</span><a href="http://www.techinsider.io/zeeq-smart-pillow-kickstarter-hands-on-preview-2016-7" target="_blank"><span style="font-weight: 400;">smart pillow</span></a>. Apart from being comfortable, it tracked my restlessness during the night, measured my snoring, woke me with its silent alarm, even played music through its built-in speakers. It was cool and different, and I had fun with it.</p><p>It was also a <em><span style="font-weight: 400;">smart pillow</span></em>. I'd have to lose touch with reality to think most people need one today.</p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>The Moto Z is that smart pillow, just in phone form. It's a device I've enjoyed using for the past two weeks. It's gorgeous, powerful, and legitimately inventive. Motorola, along with its parent company Lenovo, is undoubtedly committed to its vision of a premium smartphone that's both modular and strikingly thin. In a way, I admire that.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Then reality sets in, and I realize just how convoluted that vision is when the phone is out of a reviewer's hands, and into the hands of someone who just spent $620 to make it her main device for the next two years. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The Moto Z sells out to achieve its design goals. In doing so, it raises an array of annoyances that can make the phone feel like it's fighting you to defend its ideas.&#xa0;</span><span style="font-weight: 400;">Also, the bezel's too big, and Motorola's fallen off a cliff when it comes to software updates. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Technically, I've used the Verizon-only Moto Z Droid during this period, but aside from some bloatware, that's the same as the unlocked model Motorola plans to release later this summer. (There's also a Moto Z Force, which is larger and pricier, with a stronger camera and a "shatterproof" display.) In any case, here's what I've found.</span></p><h2>What's good about the Moto Z</h2><p><strong>- It&#xa0;</strong><strong><em>feels&#xa0;</em></strong><strong>like a flagship</strong>. <span style="font-weight: 400;">When I say "strikingly thin," I mean it. The difference between the Moto Z's&#xa0;</span><em><span style="font-weight: 400;">0.2-inch&#xa0;</span></em><span style="font-weight: 400;">frame and&#xa0;</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"><a href="http://www.techinsider.io/samsung-galaxy-s7-review-2016-3" target="_blank">Samsung's 0.31-inch Galaxy S7</a>&#xa0;</span><span style="font-weight: 400;">might not sound like much, but it's tangible when it's in your hand. Combined with the smooth steel back and rounded aluminum edges, the whole package comes off like an $600 device you'd want to show off. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Even though it's light, it's no toy or tool. Yes, the camera bump on the back will be polarizing, but for me, it only added character. It's really between this and the Galaxy S7 edge in the realm of gorgeous Android phones.</span></p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>-&#xa0;<strong>It's a powerhouse</strong>. <span style="font-weight: 400;">The Moto Z runs on the usual specs from a 2016 flagship - i.e., a 2.15GHz Snapdragon 820 chip and 4GB of RAM - and it has no issues with power as a result. Apps load quickly, multitasking is a breeze, web browsing is fine, and there's no game you can't play. </span><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">If anything, my benchmark tests had the Moto running slightly faster than the Galaxy S7, likely because of its lighter software skin. Either way, you won't have to worry about performance here.</span></p><p><strong>- The display's great</strong>! It's a 5.5-inch OLED display with a resolution of 2560 x 1440, which is still plenty sharp enough for any non-VR need. Though its whites are a pinch on the blueish side, it's just as vibrant and deeply colorful as any good OLED display should be. Brightness and viewing angles aren't the best, but they're more than fine. Again, you get&#xa0;what you pay for.</p><p><strong>- The camera's good, too</strong>. I wouldn't put the 13-megapixel unit here on the level of the Galaxy S7, but it's not terribly far off. It snaps quickly, keeps things stable, and does well to not lose control of brightness or white balance.&#xa0;<span style="font-weight: 400;">There's a definite loss of detail when you go from good light to low light, as expected, but even then it's not the worst. The 5-megapixel camera on the front is plenty respectable as well. These aren't things you'd go out of your way for, a la the Galaxy phones, but they're a nice bonus.</span></p><p><strong>- If you buy unlocked, Motorola's take on Android is as user-friendly as it gets</strong>. Outside of Verizon's meddling - more in a minute - Motorola continues to do a fantastic job of adding to Android in useful ways without changing the look and feel of it.&#xa0;The "Moto Display" feature, which flashes the time and your notifications whenever you wave your hand over the phone's front, is something every phone should have, and being able to launch the camera just by twisting the device is great.</p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">If you want to ignore all that, you can, and it's more or less the same Android 6.0 Marshmallow you'd find on a&#xa0;</span><a href="http://www.techinsider.io/google-nexus-smartphones-are-the-best-android-phones-2015-10"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Nexus phone</span></a>. There's nothing really new here, but I'll take that over another Android OEM trying too hard to brand an already good thing.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>-&#xa0;<strong>There are no storage problems</strong>. The Moto Z comes with either 32 GB or 64 GB by default, and you can add up to 256 GB through a microSD slot on the phone's top. That's plenty of storage. And unlike the Galaxy S7, the phone can treat that extra storage as if it were part of the phone itself, allowing it to work more smoothly with most apps.<p><strong>- The "Moto Mod" attachments just work</strong>. The "modularity" aspect of the Moto Z derives from its Moto Mods, a set of separately sold accessories that are specifically designed to attach to the magnetic set of pins on the phone's back. There's an external speaker from JBL, a handful of battery cases, a few "Style Shell" covers, and, yes, a pocket projector.&#xa0;<span style="font-weight: 400;">LG tried something similar with </span><a href="http://www.techinsider.io/lg-g5-review-2016-4"><span style="font-weight: 400;">its G5 phone</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> earlier this year, but I cannot stress enough how much better the idea is implemented here. You just grab your thing and pop it on. It takes no more than a second, and after a quick onscreen walkthrough, everything works. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Whenever </span><a href="http://www.techinsider.io/google-project-ara-smartphones-photos-2016-5"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Google</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> or anyone else takes a stab at this in the future, this pure ease of use will be the standard by which they're judged. Modularity is exciting but it's easy to make overwhelming. Here, it's well done.</span></p><h2>What's bad about the Moto Z</h2><p><strong>- No one should actually buy any of those attachments</strong>. There's a big difference between being well designed and being practical. Let's go one by one:</p><ul><li style="font-weight: 400;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Spending $60 on a 2,200mAh battery case that can't fully recharge your phone is dumb when stronger $20 battery packs exist. </span><span style="font-weight: 400;"><br /></span></li><li style="font-weight: 400;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Spending $80 on a speaker attachment that works with one device and projects sound </span><em><span style="font-weight: 400;">away</span></em><span style="font-weight: 400;"> from you is dumb when Bluetooth speakers exist. </span><span style="font-weight: 400;"><br /></span></li><li style="font-weight: 400;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Spending </span><em><span style="font-weight: 400;">$300</span></em><span style="font-weight: 400;"> on a projector that washes out images and maxes at a grainy 480p is dumb all the time.</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"><br /></span></li><li style="font-weight: 400;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">The Style Shells are mostly harmless at $20 a pop, but it's not like they add any protection. They, like everything else, also take away from the phone's thinness.</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"><br /></span></li></ul><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">It's worth noting that Motorola's launched a&#xa0;</span><a href="http://developer.motorola.com/buy"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Moto Mods Development Kit</span></a>, which allows anyone to hack up their own tricks, but it remains to be seen if the Moto Z can drum up enough interest to make that a useful thing for the masses.</p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Right now, this take on modularity is fun and easy, but also a really expensive way to lock yourself into one ecosystem, with a bunch of devices that aren't good value. The form is sound, but the function needs work.</span></p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>-&#xa0;<strong>There are exactly zero immediate benefits to ditching the headphone jack</strong>. I <span style="font-weight: 400;"><a href="http://www.techinsider.io/life-without-the-headphone-jack-2016-7">wrote about this at length</a>&#xa0;</span><span style="font-weight: 400;">last week, so I'll spare you yet another angry audiophile rant. All I'll say is that I can at least&#xa0;</span><em><span style="font-weight: 400;">see&#xa0;</span></em><span style="font-weight: 400;">why&#xa0;</span><a href="http://www.techinsider.io/how-apple-killing-headphone-jack-affects-headphones-iphone-7-2016-7"><span style="font-weight: 400;">the iPhone might ditch the 3.5mm connector</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> - Apple has a very successful history of vertical integration. Plus,&#xa0;</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"><a href="http://www.techinsider.io/what-its-like-using-lightning-headphones-2016-1">Lightning headphones</a>&#xa0;</span><span style="font-weight: 400;">are already a thing.&#xa0;</span><span style="font-weight: 400;">USB-C headphones, however, are not. Unless you're down with Bluetooth, you're stuck with a dongle, one that I've already misplaced multiple times. This feels every bit like Lenovo jumping on the bandwagon to <em>look</em>&#xa0;</span><span style="font-weight: 400;">forward-thinking</span>, regardless of whether or not there's any substance to the decision. The phone isn't even water-resistant. It's just thinner. It looks great, but aesthetics have a way of fading when they make your life harder.<p><strong>- Related: Take a guess at what gets cut to make a phone this thin</strong>. Yep, it's battery life. You know, the one thing everyone wants more of. That insatiable thirst for slimness cuts the Moto Z's battery down to 2,600mAh - with Android, that means you have to be more conservative than usual to get through a full day. You still <em><span style="font-weight: 400;">can</span></em><span style="font-weight: 400;">, but if you're on it all the time, it's harder.&#xa0;</span><span style="font-weight: 400;">The phone does charge very quickly over USB-C, but the charger that comes with the device doesn't have a detachable cable, which is horrible. Even worse, the Moto Mod battery pack doesn't have a port for charging separately.</span></p><p><strong>- The fingerprint scanner's kind of a mess</strong>. It definitely works, but it's overly sensitive. That's not great when it's on the front of the phone, rather than recessed in a more natural spot on the back.</p><p><strong>- It also makes the bottom bezel huge.</strong><span style="font-weight: 400;"> This wouldn't be as big a deal if the scanner worked as a home button, but it doesn't. Instead, you have a bezel big enough to incorporate that and a Moto logo sitting underneath the usual software buttons. A 5.5-inch display is big enough as it is, so it's safe to say that this phone isn't friendly to use with one hand.</span></p><p><strong>- It can run hot</strong>. It's not bad enough to be a major problem, but it did seem to take less effort to raise the Moto Z's temperature than what's typical. Flip on a more involved game, and that steel back will get warm before long.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>-&#xa0;<strong>Verizon</strong>. I haven't met another human who's willingly used VZ Navigator. You haven't either. Still, there it is in the Moto Z Droid's app tray, right alongside another dozen or so pieces of bloatware. They're almost all worthless - <em><span style="font-weight: 400;">maybe</span></em><span style="font-weight: 400;"> the NFL Mobile app aside - and a handful of them can't be uninstalled. Again, if you can wait for the unlocked version, do that.</span><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">On the plus side, Verizon's coverage is still very strong in the New York area, and aside from a harmless logo on the camera module, it doesn't brand the hardware at all.</span></p><p><strong>- Motorola won't commit to monthly security patches, and it's lost its reputation for timely software updates</strong>. Back when Motorola belonged to Google, it earned the adoration of Android nerds everywhere for getting OS updates to its flagship phones long before anyone else. If you had a Moto X, you never felt left behind.</p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Under Lenovo, that's gone right out the window. The company's been just as slow as any other Android OEM in recent months, even though it barely touches the OS. Now, </span><a href="http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2016/07/motorola-confirms-that-it-will-not-commit-to-monthly-security-patches/" target="_blank"><span style="font-weight: 400;">it's said</span></a> <span style="font-weight: 400;">it can't commit to pushing Google's monthly security updates to the phone right as they're released. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Lenovo isn't&#xa0;the only company&#xa0;to be lax on this, but either way, buying a Moto Z means buying a phone that won't be as secure as it could be for chunks at a time.</span></p><h2>So, should I buy it?</h2><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">This is a weird one. Everything that's good about the Moto Z is&#xa0;</span><em><span style="font-weight: 400;">awesome</span></em>. The display is a pleasure, the software is clean, and the Moto Mod setup is ingenious. And while I&#xa0;wouldn't brag about how my phone is thinner than yours out loud, part of me loves having a phone that's meant to evoke pride when I hold it. (Consumerism!)</p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Conversely, the negatives border on appalling. The battery isn't up to snuff, ditching the headphone jack is aimless, and the Moto Mods themselves are nowhere close to necessary. There's no real way to justify the lack of security updates, either.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>If you have cash to burn, and you </span><em><span style="font-weight: 400;">really</span></em><span style="font-weight: 400;"> value design or just having something different, you might be happy with the Moto Z. It's not a bad phone. Its processor is equally fast, too, and you get similar storage options. </p><p>Really, the biggest difference is the screen tech: The S10e does not have a curved screen and its bezels (the black borders around the screen) are a bit wider, however, there is still no notch, so you do get a big beautiful screen, even though it's technically the smallest of the bunch at 5.8 inches. Its processor is zippy and fast, it holds a charge much longer than most other flagship phones, and it can juice up wirelessly. The Razer Phone 2 also has dual front-facing speakers so you can get more immersed in your game.
