Assassin’s Creed Mirage on iPhone 15: Killer game to debut on Pro and iPad on June 6

<ul class="summary-list"><li><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/apple">Apple's</a> new iPad lineup debuted on May 7 with flashy new features.</li><li>The new iPad Pro has a powerful M4 chip, but it's unclear who's buying iPads these days.</li></ul><p>Apple launched its latest iPads earlier this month with great fanfare and a host of new bells and whistles.</p><p>While it's clearly a move to update the product line and invigorate customers, it's also led many to ask: Who's <em>actually</em> buying new ones?</p><p>The tablet computer <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/tech/best-apple-ipads">debuted in 2010</a> with a price tag of $500, and the lineup has since expanded to include tablets that fit the needs of kids, creatives, and business professionals. Its most recent versions include the thinnest yet, with an impressive OLED screen — if you want to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/new-ipad-pro-magic-keyboard-pencil-pro-cost-3k-2024-5">spend $3,000 on a new iPad,</a> that is.</p><p>But the overall iPad line "has been in a funk for three years," said Gene Munster, managing partner at Deepwater Asset Management. Apple's most recent earnings showed quarterly revenue of $5.56 billion — down 17% year-over-year and below analysts' estimates.</p><p>One major issue, analysts who spoke to Business Insider said, is how regularly owners feel the need to buy a new one.</p><p>"They use their iPad, but they don't use it enough that they need to upgrade super often," Munster said.</p><p>In fact, Wedbush Securities managing director Dan Ives estimated that 70% of iPad owners haven't upgraded in 4 years — seemingly a lot longer than people keep their iPhones.</p><p>One Reddit user recently asked in the r/iPadPro subreddit if 2018 iPad Pro owners were finally ready to upgrade to the latest model, and the responses were mixed.</p><p>"My beloved 2018 died last month. I drove that poor iPad into the ground and she held strong. I already ordered the 2024 and plan to keep it for at least another 6 years," one user <a target="_blank" href="https://www.reddit.com/r/iPadPro/comments/1cme4ba/comment/l30mzv3/?utm_source=share&amp;utm_medium=web3x&amp;utm_name=web3xcss&amp;utm_term=1&amp;utm_content=share_button">wrote</a>.</p><p>Others weren't so quick to give up on their old iPads, which are still running and can still support current software.</p><p>"I'm waiting for some useful 3D model editing app or something that needs something more powerful to make me push my 2018 past its breaking point but haven't gotten there yet," another user <a target="_blank" href="https://www.reddit.com/r/iPadPro/comments/1cme4ba/comment/l3275wq/?utm_source=share&amp;utm_medium=web3x&amp;utm_name=web3xcss&amp;utm_term=1&amp;utm_content=share_button">replied</a>.</p><p>Better computing power could be something that drives sales. Ives said the new M4 chip in the new iPad Pro, which Apple touted as an "outrageously powerful chip for AI," could lead more consumers to buy an iPad over a Mac.</p><p>It's key as AI becomes increasingly ubiquitous. Apple CEO Tim Cook has said there are "big opportunities across our products" for generative AI, so the newest iPad should reasonably be compatible with any updates the company could announce at its <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/apple-plays-catchup-ai-google-openai-2024-5">Worldwide Developers Conference.</a></p><p>Meanwhile, Munster believes education is still the tablet's strongest market. Remote learning prompted by the COVID-19 pandemic grew iPad sales in 2021, and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/apple-education">Apple offers deals on devices for students.</a></p><p>Apple execs are optimistic about the tablet, at least in the short term. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tim-cook-potential-successors-ceo-apple-john-ternus-jeff-williams-2024-5">CFO Luca Maestri</a> said on May 2's earnings call that the company expects iPad revenue growth in the double digits in the current quarter.</p><p>But it'll need to bounce back sustainably if Apple hopes to wow analysts.</p><p>"This has been a long, slow, downward trend for the iPad," Munster told BI.</p>

Who's actually buying Apple's iPads?

The 2021 iPad Pro will allow users to download and install iPadOS updates over 5G, adding a feature Apple previously introduced with the iPhone 12.<br /><br />With the rollout of 5G-enabled iPhones, Apple added an extra option to iOS enabling iPhone 12 owners to download iOS updates when they are connected to a 5G cellular network.<br /><br />In a support page update on Friday, Apple said it is bringing the same feature to iPadOS, reports Apple Insider.<br /><br />  <div type="javascript" title="Custom" contenttype="Image"><cdata><![CDATA[ ]]></cdata></div><br />The support page, titled "Use 5G with your iPad," explains to users how to manage their data connection on the updated iPad Pro models.<br /><br />In a section about data modes, spotted by MacRumors, users can now tell iPadOS to "Allow More Data on 5G".<br /><br />By selecting the feature, it allows iOS to use more data in its various system tasks and for app features, such as higher-quality FaceTime video feeds or high-definition content streams.A<br /><br />This option also enables iPadOS updates to be carried out over cellular.<br /><br />Apple warns that the setting will be set as default for some users with unlimited data plans, depending on the carrier. For other users, it has to be enabled manually.<br /><br />To enable the cellular over-the-air iPadOS updates, users need to open the Settings app, select Cellular Data, then Cellular Data Options, then select Data Mode. Apple's 2021 iPad Pro users will now be able to download iPadOS updates over 5G connection

Before, you had to plug it into the iPad's Lightning port, where it would stick out awkwardly.</li></ul><p>On Tuesday, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/apple" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Apple</a> unveiled a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/apple-new-ipad-pro-ditches-home-button-for-face-id-2018-10" target="_blank" rel="noopener">revamped iPad Pro and a brand-new Apple Pencil</a>. In the process, it fixed one of the few bad things about the generation of products that these new ones will replace.&#xa0;</p><p>The new iPad Pro has an entirely new design, including squared-off edges and a nearly edge-to-edge "liquid retina" display. But perhaps one of the niftiest changes comes in how it charges the Apple Pencil.&#xa0;</p><p>Now, your Pencil can snap on magnetically to the top of your iPad and charge up wirelessly, like so:</p><p>This is a total change from how the Pencil used to charge. The first-generation Pencil could only charge up one way: by removing the cap on the top and plugging it directly into the Lightning port on your iPad, where it would stick out awkwardly.&#xa0;&#xa0;</p><p>It looked like this:&#xa0;</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>While that charging method was a good idea in theory - you didn't need a separate charger for your Pencil! - it clearly had some limitations.</p><p>If you brushed past the device too quickly while it was charging, the Pencil could potentially snap off, breaking the Lightning charger. Or worse, if left on the edge of a table, a little one walking by could have been poked with the pointy end of the Pencil.&#xa0;</p><p>At the very least, it was incredibly unwieldy, and looked a little silly to boot - not unlike Apple's Magic Mouse 2, <a href="https://gizmodo.com/the-sad-reality-of-the-magic-mouse-2-1746949289" target="_blank" rel="noopener">which faces a similar issue</a>.&#xa0;</p><p><em><strong>Now read:</strong></em>&#xa0;<em><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/apple-october-event-live-blog-all-announcements-2018-10" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Here's everything Apple announced at its big iPad and Mac event</a></em></p><p>The new second-generation Pencil fixes one more issue: you have to worry less about losing the Pencil anymore. Before, there was no easy way to keep track of the Pencil unless you had a special iPad case, and its totally smooth, cylindrical shape meant it was often at risk for rolling right off your desk. Now that it has one flat edge and it's magnetized, you can snap it onto your iPad and put the whole thing in your bag.&#xa0;</p><h2>A pricier Pencil</h2><p><span>The only downside: the new Pencil is more expensive, and it only works with a few iPads. The Pencil costs $129, $30 more than the previous model, and it only works with the new 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro.</span></p><p><span>What's different about the new version - beyond a tweak to the design and the wireless charging - is the ability to double tap on the device to change tools or brush sizes in whatever program you're using, and tap to wake it up. Apple is changing the worst thing about the Apple Pencil - and the fix makes it way better

<p>Just a week after Pixar's animation team got a&#xa0;<a href="http://appleinsider.com/articles/15/09/29/pixar-staff-gets-early-chance-to-test-ipad-pro-apple-pencil">test run of the iPad Pro</a>, Disney employees have received the same treatment.&#xa0;</p><p>The visit from Apple was documented on Twitter by <a href="https://twitter.com/paulhildebrandt?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">Paul Hildebrandt</a><span class="s1">, a Disney product manager, who described the iPad Pro as a "cool new toy."&#xa0;</span></p><p><span class="s1"><div></div></span></p><p class="embed-spacer">The new Pro, which Apple will be unveiled in November, is being marketed as the opposite of a toy, however. Just like Microsoft's Surface tablets, Apple is targeting high-end creatives who also want a portable device.&#xa0;</p><p class="embed-spacer"><a href="http://appleinsider.com/articles/15/10/06/disney-animators-test-apples-ipad-pro-reveal-screen-has-roughed-surface-for-drawing">AppleInsider noted</a><span> that Apple appears to have created a new feature, described as a "tooth" feel on the screen. This is unlike any other tablet on the market and gives designers a more familiar surface to work with. Samsung is also running a trade-in offer where you can get up to $450 when you trade in select phones or tablets.</p><h2>Samsung's tablet has a big sharp OLED screen.</h2><p>What makes this device a compelling iPad-Pro alternative? For one, the display. The Tab S6 has a bright 10.5-inch AMOLED screen with a 2,560 x 1,600-pixel resolution, which should deliver a vivid picture for video and gaming. The iPad Pro 11's 2,388 x 1,668 "Liquid Retina" screen isn't an OLED panel and isn't likely to generate the same vibrant colors. </p><p>There's a fingerprint sensor built into the Tab S6's screen for added security, so you can log in without having to enter a password every time. This is a feature the iPad Pro lacks and may please customers who are creeped out by Apple's Face ID. That said, Face ID is <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/iphone-x-surface-book-face-id-windows-hello-better-than-fingerprint-scanners-2018-1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">harder to trick</a> than a fingerprint sensor, so you might prefer the iPad if you're especially concerned with security. </p><p>Elsewhere, you've got an 8-megapixel front camera, and two rear cameras at 5 megapixels and 18 megapixels respectively. The 5-megapixel camera offers a 123-degree field of view, which is quite wide for a tablet's camera. All in all, it's a roughly comparable array to that of the iPad Pro, which sports a 12-megapixel rear camera and 7-megapixel front camera. That said, it's 2019. Are you really taking photos with your tablet? Probably not, but it could come in handy for video calls.</p><h2>The Tab S6 is a high-end tablet for power users.</h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><a href="http://www.anrdoezrs.net/links/6415797/type/dlg/sid/biip_082619_samsung-galaxy-tab-s6-price/https://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/tablets/buy/s/Options/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"></a><p class="source"><span>Samsung</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Performance-wise, the Tab S6 has the most powerful processor of any Samsung tablet to date in Qualcomm's Snapdragon 855. The S6's predecessor, the Galaxy Tab S4, ran the older Snapdragon 835, and still delivered decent, snappy performance. We expect the Tab S6 to offer an even smoother experience, both during general browsing and more intense tasks such as video playback and gaming.</p><p>You won't find as smooth of an experience with audio and video editing or other high-power creative pursuits as you will on the iPad Pro, which is powered by Apple's exceptional A12X Bionic Chip, but folks who aren't artistic professionals will likely be just fine with the Tab S6. </p><p>The slate also packs in a 7,040mAh battery, which Samsung claims will last 15 hours on a full charge. We'll have to test this claim for ourselves, but it's likely a bit ambitious. The Galaxy Tab S4 had a slightly larger 7,300mAh battery and lasted around 10 hours on most battery tests. Samsung isn't the only company shipping out a stylus: Apple and Microsoft both sell pens of their own, but they're quite pricey at $129 and $99.99 respectively. </p><p>Not only does the S Pen ship with the Galaxy Tab S6 at no extra cost, but it also has a few unique tricks up its sleeve. The stylus sports a button that you can map to various shortcuts. For example, you could press it to open your tablet's camera app from across the room. Some apps also support gesture controls. If the camera app is open, for instance, you can flick the stylus back and forth to switch between your tablet's front and rear cameras or zoom in by drawing an arc through the air. It feels a bit like using a magic wand. </p><p>Samsung also makes a keyboard case, the Book Cover Keyboard. The case includes a trackpad and wrist rests, which will likely make typing more comfortable than it is on Apple's Smart Keyboard for the iPad Pro. The case is pricey, however, at $179.99. If that's outside your budget, you'll find several cheaper third-party keyboard cases on Amazon. </p><p>Until we've spent some time with the Galaxy Tab S6 ourselves, we can't say for sure whether this device is a better purchase than the iPad Pro.
