<ul><li>In an exclusive interview with Business Insider, <keyword id="6370462" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="tata-communications">Tata Communications</keyword>’ IoT head Alok Bardiya explains how the company caught the ‘tailwind’ of the COVID-19, which led to a surge in demand.</li><li>The company’s revenue from ‘innovative’ services — which includes the <keyword id="970768" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="internet-of-things">Internet of Things</keyword> (IoT) — saw a massive 62.4% yearly jump in revenue in the second quarter. </li><li>According to Bardiya, COVID-19 forced IoT to expand beyond the manufacturing line.</li></ul>The Internet of Things (IoT) includes everything from sensors to <keyword id="387162" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="data-collection">data collection</keyword>, and till now, large companies were mostly using it to make their manufacturing process more efficient. But with the coronavirus pandemic disrupting the workplace, IoT is expanding beyond the manufacturing line. “A factory is not just the manufacturing line. There are a lot of people and a lot of processes. That is where the wave will take IoT — touching that broader set,” Tata Communications’ Head of IoT Business Alok Bardiya told Business Insider in an exclusive interview. Over the last six months, Tata Communications’ IoT services have brought in three new customers and deployed nearly 15,000 new devices across 45 cities. “We actually did get a tailwind there. The segment saw a 57% increase in revenue over the last three months compared to the previous quarter, a yearly jump of 62.4%. According to Bardiya, a significant increase in demand was seen from clients in the fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) and pharmaceutical sectors. “For the FMCG sector, it’s important that demand comes back at scale and that frameworks are put in place for COVID tracing and tracking,” he explained. Due to the urgency of finding solutions that work, Tata Communications notes that companies are now only taking a few weeks to make decisions about deploying IoT within their organisations — a process that used to take between six to 12 months before the pandemic. Even sectors like metals and mining and oil and gas have shown interest in IoT even though that was not previously the case. The only industry to not show a substantial change in momentum is travel and associated hospitality vertices, according to Bardiya. This is because they were also deploying IoT solutions prior to the pandemic and the current slowdown will take time to dissipate. IoT is expanding beyond the manufacturing line “IoT solutions have been restricted to high-end manufacturers and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). The OEM-drive IoT wave did have some legs, but it was restricted — it wasn’t all pervasive,” said Bardiya. Now, while most companies are focusing on making work from home the new normal, IoT helps others figure out how to get workers back into offices in a safe manner — shifting the focus from the manufacturing line onto workers and their safety. And, once the infrastructure is in place, companies can continue to add use cases and expand the application of the data collected, increasing the return on investment (RoI). Another aspect of this is the actual cost of deploying IoT solutions. Right now, lower price points are required to ascertain RoI in the Indian context. But, as volumes continue to increase, the price of sensors and hardware could come down. “More use cases and the flexibility of IoT will drive IoT adoption. I’m optimistic even in the medium term, the next two to three years,” said Bardiya. He believes that one day a massive OEM like Foxconn could be manufacturing IoT hardware and sensors at scale, just as we saw with smartphones. Over time, not only will the sensors get cheaper but also improve in quality. Israel is one of the countries that has banned direct travel from mainland China. So delegations of hundreds of Chinese investors were unable to attend this conference dedicated to matching Israeli startups with investors.China has been a major source of investment into Israeli startups over the years, even for OurCrowd, which is an unconventional VC. OurCrowd raises its funds - now more than $1.4 billion under management - from doctors, lawyers, anyone that qualifies as an accredited investor, in addition to institutional investors. Investors buy in at $10,000 minimum chunks and can then use the OurCrowd platform to decide which funding term sheets they want to support (or they for a $50,000 minimum, they can buy into a something that looks more like a mutual fund).In the US, accredited investors means individuals who make more than $200,000 or couples that make more than $300,000, aka people weathly enough to invest in securities that are not public and subject to all the laws that govern public companies.Medved even joked on stage about it during a Wednesday, pre-conference, invitational talk on stage to select investors. He dug up an old cartoon of the Swine virus which offered alternatives to shaking hands: the fully clothed elbow bump. Conference organizers also scrambled to add livestreaming to more of the conferences events to China, and to set up video calls between many of the startups what were hoping to use the gathering to pitch to Chinese investors."We want to send a shoutout to all of friends in China and Asia. Our thoughts are with you. This virus will be fought in all of the world. We are disturbed today by what happened in Barcelona, where they canceled the Mobile World Congress," he said.But the truth is, the worries about the impact of the virus runs even deeper than fears of contracting it by gathering together an international crowd, fresh from airports worldwide.The impact of the virus on American business is already enormous, said Eytan Buchman, CMO of Israeli international freight and shipping startup Freightos in a press conference. Freightos is a platform that helps companies of all sizes find international shippers for the supplies they buy and products sell. The company is an Amazon shipping partner. Through the $20 trillion of exports that flows across its platform involving 1,600 logistics service providers, it has collected so much data on worldwide shipping trends, and the business trends that power the need for shipping, that the company is working on creating a derivative investment market based on its data.Here's the type of data Freightos knows: Since the Coronavirus outbreak has hampered travel to and from mainland China and sickened tens of thousands of people, US companies have been madly searching for alternative suppliers outside of China. Whereas, 3-6% of American companies of the 8,000 companies using its platform typically search for manufacturing suppliers outside China, in the past couple of weeks, close to 20% of them are trying to find suppliers outside of China. <h2>Israeli startups to the rescue?</h2>Meanwhile, here in the Startup Nation, four startups have discovered that their technology may be help address the Coronavirus risk, Medved says.They are <a href="https://www.me-med.com/">MeMed Diagnosis</a> a company that has developed a test that can instantly determine if an illness is a viral infection or a bacterial infection testing.<a href="https://www.sightdx.com/international">Sight Diagnosis</a> known in Israel as the anti-Theranos, which sells an FDA-approved device that does full blood diagnosis from a few drops of blood, a device small enough and portable enough to be used in isolated, quarantined areas. "So you don't need to take the blood from potential patients and move that into [blood testing labs] in the general blood supply," Medved said.<a href="https://www.sanotize.com/">SaNOtize</a> a company that have found a way to make an aerosol and gel with Nitric Oxide gas (NO), with its anti viral/anti-bacterial properties, to make it a practical and more affordable medicine.And the most unusual one is <a href="http://vocalzoom.com/">VocalZoom.</a> This company is working on one of the world's most sensitive vibration sensor, "able to pick up from distance your heart rate," Medved said. The focus of it has been for IoT applications for remote monitoring in difficult industrial environments. Interestingly, the report revealed that there are already two million active 5G devices in use across the country. In 2020, the data traffic grew by 36% year-over-year primarily due to rise in <keyword id="122479" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="4G">4G</keyword> data consumption as 4G subscribers surpassed 700 million with 100 million new additions during the year, said the Mobile Broadband India Traffic Index (MBiT) 2021 report on mobile broadband performance in India. The research showed that 4G alone constituted nearly 99% of the total data traffic consumed across the country in 2020. "The phenomenal growth in data consumption in India will drive demand for enhanced broadband and fixed capacity," Sanjay Malik, Senior Vice President and Head of India Market, Nokia, said in a statement. "Industry 4.0 with various IoT and enterprise use-cases, immersive applications experience (AR/VR), smart home, factory and public safety use cases will spur LTE, 5G growth and data usage further." According to the study, the average monthly data usage per user reached 13.5 GB in December 2020, growing over 20% annually owing to an increase in data subscribers and mobile video consumption. New users from rural areas also contributed to the rising monthly data usage. Mobile emerged as primary source of entertainment and productivity as an average Indian spent approximately 5 hours daily on a smartphone which is one of the highest averages globally. Short video format was the fastest-growing content category, said the report, adding that total time spent monthly on short content is expected to grow four times by 2025. Relating to device trends, the report reveals that the 4G device base surpassed 607 million units reaching a 77% penetration level. A double-digit growth is expected in 2021 for the smartphone industry as people embrace hybrid work models, e-learning, and consume content over <keyword id="1245953" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="OTT">OTT</keyword> (over-the-top) platforms. With only 22 million fixed broadband subscribers, there is a significant growth opportunity for this segment. This has made the offices and commercial spaces that are sitting empty — or not yet at full capacity— a security risk. In the early days of the pandemic, cities across the country saw a rise in property <keyword id="47717" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Theft">theft</keyword> at businesses. The New York City Police Department reported a<a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/new-york-city-sees-more-burglaries-of-businesses-under-coronavirus-emergency-measures-11586008801"> 75% jump in burglaries</a> at commercial businesses between March 12, when the city declared a state of emergency, and March 31 compared to last year. In <a href="https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/frontline/article/businesses-closed-by-covid-19-restrictions-now-targeted-by-burglars/">Denver</a>, burglaries at businesses, including marijuana dispensaries, hair salons, and restaurants, had also increased, and <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-04-19/some-crimes-are-spiking-in-major-u-s-cities-amid-empty-streets">Philadelphia</a> saw a 71% rise in burglaries at businesses in March.This is a trend Christian Cerda, CEO of security company<a href="https://simplisafe.com"> SimpliSafe</a>, has seen with some of his clients, including a Houston-based McDonald's franchise owner who needed to secure his restaurants after several local break-ins.He said that some of the crimes are starting to slow as of late."While we're not necessarily seeing an uptick in violence or crime at empty office spaces, the perceived lack of security and vulnerability that business owners and executives are feeling is very real," he added.With a new set of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/covid-19-new-mexico-shutting-down-all-non-essential-business-2020-11">shutdowns looming</a> as <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-200000-new-coronavirus-cases-2-days-50-states-rising-2020-11">coronavirus cases increase</a>, it could force <a href="https://www.insider.com/businesses-closed-after-reopening-amid-new-coronavirus-cases-2020-6">businesses to close again</a>. Cerda said COVID-19 has inspired many business owners to be proactive when it comes to protecting their business, including their property, employees, and customers."When everything seems uncertain and out of control, people fundamentally want to take action and find a solution that not only protects, but also creates peace of mind," he said. "Business owners and leaders are increasingly realizing that a security system can do just that. "Securing your business starts with assessing your risk, which could include the possibility of burglaries or even a power outage or broken pipe. Ludovico Fassati, head of Internet of Things (IoT) at <a href="https://www.vodafone.com/business/home">Vodafone</a> Americas, said that with buildings vacant for months on end, incidents can happen without anyone knowing for some time, creating costly and even permanent damage."With so much that can go wrong, it's important to be able to detect these issues immediately and properly monitor them so that they can be addressed before they become out of control," he said.<h2>An ideal setup includes entryway monitors, environmental sensors, and thermal imaging cameras</h2>Most companies likely had some type of security system in place even before the pandemic, but COVID-19 has shined a light on the need to re-evaluate those systems and add extra security, Lisa Falzone, cofounder and CEO of <a href="https://athena-security.com/">Athena Security</a>, told Business Insider."To start, small businesses should identify their 'security holes' and plug them at the choke point of entry into their building," she said — for example, allowing only those with a code or ID card to enter. She suggested businesses also add metal detectors or other technologies to detect concealed weapons.Sensors in the entryway can defend doors, too, and window and motion sensors to detect people who shouldn't be there are essential elements for business security systems, Cerda added. Security cameras also offer visibility and can capture what happened in case an alarm is triggered.Break-ins are an obvious worry for business owners. But Cerda said not to forget about weather-related events and maintenance issues that could cause damage. "As we enter the winter months, environmental sensors, like freeze and water sensors, can provide early warnings of potential water damage that might not be caught otherwise with offices being unoccupied," he said.These days, adding a temperature and health screening system is a good idea to help businesses prepare for when employees return to work, Falzone said. <a href="https://www.fda.gov/medical-devices/general-hospital-devices-and-supplies/thermal-imaging-systems-infrared-thermographic-systems-thermal-imaging-cameras">Thermal imaging cameras</a> could also be included to measure the temperature of anyone entering the space.Some business owners may see security systems as just another expense at a time when <a href="https://www.mckinsey.com/featured-insights/americas/which-small-businesses-are-most-vulnerable-to-covid-19-and-when">many are struggling</a> because of losses caused by the pandemic, but Cerda said it's an essential investment, and there are many affordable options out there. For example, SimpliSafe offers security hardware for around $260, and its monitoring services range between $14.99 and $24.99 a month.<h2>The better the tech, the more likely a business can rebound fast</h2>Investing in the most high-tech security measures will benefit businesses going forward, Fassati said. According to Vodafone's recent <a href="https://www.vodafone.com/business/news-and-insights/white-paper/future-ready-report-2020">Future Ready Report</a>, the organizations that invested in tech were better prepared for COVID-19, are faring well during pandemic, and are expected to bounce back more quickly once it ends."From wearables, access systems, and distance controls to mobile apps and 5G, greater digitalization will help simplify and automate the complex new processes business owners will need to order to successfully manage businesses in the future," Fassati said.Other tech that can help businesses immediately detect and monitor issues in vacant spaces include wireless automation, smart sensors, and IoT. Fassati said IoT tech enables remote monitoring of buildings using video, helps detect leaks or other damage, and can manage heating and cooling systems."Protection takes on a number of different meanings to businesses, but we're seeing that technology that provides visibility is becoming increasingly valuable to business leaders and owners — whether it's smart security that provides visibility into the state of their physical footprint or video conferencing technology that provides visibility into how their employees are doing," Cerda said.Security has always been a good investment for companies, he added. The uncertainty caused by the pandemic should prompt business owners to make security even more of a priority."The number of challenges and insecurities executives and business owners are facing has been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic,"Cerda said, "and the security of their office or business should not be one of them."

Former British Intelligence researcher and founder of cybersecurity firm Cyfirma, Kumar Ritesh told Business Insider that not only has this led to a surge in hacking attempts, but <keyword id="9770830" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="old-malware">old malware</keyword> is also making a comeback like never before. These ‘copy-paste’ hackers take the old source code of a virus or malware and repurpose it to launch an attack. “New nations who are joining the game quite late have suddenly skewed the whole cyber warfare landscape in a different proportion,” said Ritesh. Old malware makes a comeback More sophisticated and experienced cybercriminals, like the Russians, North Koreans, or the Chinese, have the tools required to create their new malware. New players, on the other hand, don’t have a lot of capabilities, according to Ritesh. Instead of creating new code, they modify what already exists. “A three-year-old malware which was nowhere in the game has come back all over again in the last four to five months,” said Ritesh. In the last four months, more than 130 new variants of the malware have been spotted by DeCYFIR, Cyfirma’s threat prediction software. Dharma ransomware, which first reared its head in 2016, was spotted attacking small and medium businesses. Many variations of the source code have been dumped online or can be found for sale, according to cybersecurity firms Sophos. Conficker, a 12-year-old malware, also made a comeback. Exploiting weaknesses in Internet of Things (IoT) devices, the malware has inflicted most of its damage in the healthcare sector. Joker, another old Malware found making the rounds on the Google Play Store by cybersecurity firm Check Point. Introducing Patchwork There is no better example of ‘copy-paste’ hackers than one of the more prominent Indian hacker groups, Patchwork. Back in 2016, the Patchwork group of hackers ripped code and tolls from Github and around the Dark New to build their kit. They were able to crack through <a href="https://www.theregister.com/2016/07/08/copy_paste_slacker_hackers_pop_corp_locks_in_ode_to_stolen_code/">2500 corporates and government agencies.</a> In 2018, they resurfaced when cybersecurity firm <a href="https://securityonline.info/volexity-indian-apt-hacker-organization-patchwork-target-us-think-tanks/">Volexity</a> caught them trying to break into US think tanks. Palo Alto Networks also saw an uptake in their activity against South Asian countries, including Pakistan. Old malware makes a comeback as new players enter cyber warfare

<ul><li>Airtel and Amazon Web Services (AWS) has signed a multi-year strategic collaboration agreement to offer cloud solutions to Airtel’s clients. </li><li>The new Airtel-AWS deal will face off against the existing Jio-Microsoft partnership in the Indian market. </li><li>While Airtel and Jio battle for telecom supremacy, AWS and Microsoft are looking for ways to keep on top of the cloud market with data storage demands set to surge once 5G comes into play. </li></ul>Airtel is teaming up with Amazon Web Services (AWS) in a strategic collaboration agreement to bring in more cloud services for the enterprise side of its solutions in India. The tie-up will also take on the existing Jio-Microsoft partnership which has the Microsoft Azure cloud platform at the centre of it. With Vodafone tracking third, Airtel and Reliance Jio caught in a battle for telecom supremacy. Subscribers and the average return per user (ARPU) gauge the wide availability of a network, enterprise businesses are where the margins are better. And, the cloud market is expected to be worth nearly $8 billion in another three years, according to <a href="https://www.consultancy.in/news/2695/indias-public-cloud-market-could-reach-8-billion-by-2023">Gartner</a>. The surge could happen even sooner with the demand for cloud seeing acceleration amid the coronavirus pandemic as more businesses look for a way to help their employees work from home. It’s not just the telecom companies who are caught in a face-off but also the cloud providers. AWS, Microsoft and Google are the top three cloud providers in India, with AWS leading the pack. Where Airtel is using AWS to have public, private and hybrid cloud options — AWS benefits as Airtel ensures that it doesn’t fall behind in a market where Microsoft has a partnership with the telecom that has the most subscribers and is expected to grow even further. Airtel already has its own Airtel Cloud platform but it will now be integrating AWS to develop new products within its portfolio. It already has around 2,500 large enterprises and more than a million small and medium enterprises (SMEs) clients in its kitty. Setting the stage for 5G Cloud partnership will also have a bigger role to play once the 5G network is announced in India. Connecting the Internet of Things (IoT) devices, milliseconds making a difference in productivity and the sheer amount of data will need a reliable and customisable space in the cloud. Jio has already said that it is 5G ready even as we await an announcement on 5G auction from the government. Airtel has made no such statement yet but it did showcase its 5G solutions at the India Mobile Congress (IMC) earlier this year, an indicator that the company has plans to make its own bid for 5G airwaves. Last month, Bharti Airtel also picked up a $235 million investment from the US-based Carlyle Group in its data centre business, Nxtra, for a 25% stake. Nxtra has 10 large data centres across the country and 120 edge data centres. However, even before the opening a large number of people have written the epitaph of the bi-annual event. Yes, it’s true that several players like Hero Motor Corp, BMW, Fiat, Nissan and Ford will be conspicuous by their absence. Blame it on an industry in the throes of an existential crisis where marketers are unable to fathom returns. Yes, it’s true that the Chinese have dealt a double whammy – first by saving the auto show by their land grab, where 20% of the space is now rented to Chinese brands such as Great Wall, BYD and MG. However, the second whammy is the more sinister Coronavirus that has spread trepidation amongst the millions planning to visit. Whatever the threats - the big boys are in, and pretenders are waiting in the wings. Maruti, Mahindra, Tata, Hyundai and the successful new challenger Kia have their battle lines drawn. Each with space the size of a football field and an ammunition of connected cars, green engines, electric mobility and platforms for the sharing economy. Mercedes Benz loves their India story and there is no better place to flaunt it. The Chinese invasion is led by MG and we will see the debut of Great Wall Motors and BYD. The brave new world where Japan, China and Korea are preening in a war dance before fighting what is perhaps the last battle of Panipat. Looking at the rear-view mirror it will be interesting to note that the first auto show was held at Madison Square Garden, New York in the year 1900. For 120 years, auto-shows have been a combination of debutant ball coupled with a victory parade. Wining and pampering the press, glamorous hostesses showing off automobile models and a fantasy land of futuristic clay models, enough to draw vast hordes of the gullible public. It’s interesting to note that the last auto-show in Delhi had an attendance of 0.6 million people. Travelling to first world auto shows like Frankfurt and Los Angeles, one can’t help but notice the paradigm shift. Crowds are thinning, exhibition stalls are shrinking, and expenses are being questioned. Auto brands are now moving to 'sexier' platforms like Mobile World Congress in Barcelona and CES in Las Vegas. So, there you go – blame everything on the dirty 'D' word - Digital is the new reality! In today’s connected world the lines blur between physical and digital, where click-throughs are more valuable than visitors. Virtual reality lets you customize and create, and artificial intelligence engines are replacing horsepower. The Auto Show is now a daily event, on-demand on our phones and tablets; but is there a future for the good old event? Come to the 15th Delhi Auto Expo and judge for yourself. Don’t come for the glamorous girls - come to get a glimpse of smart devices that will drive mobility and change your world. Don’t come for the brands that have messed up (and are missing out) – come for the 60+ launches that repose faith and drive India’s future. Come to see petrol heads turn electric, come to see traditionalists go green and come to see yourself driven by the internet of things (IOT). Come to see mobile phone manufacturers – synergize with transport and internet providers explore new e-ways. There is no better place to see how rapidly the old order is changing and yielding place to new. Take the seat, shift gears and drive into the future at the 15th Auto Expo in Greater Noida.
