Private equity firm TPG’s Rise Climate Fund along with Abu Dhabi Development Holding will make an investment worth ₹7500 crore (around $1 billion at current prices) in Tata Motors’ electric vehicles (EV) segment, it had said. Analysts believe the development will turn fortunes for the company reeling from its Jaguar Land Rover business. “Lack of competition in the near term may continue to benefit Tata’s EV volumes though progress has to be tracked,” said analysts at HSBC while raising the target price for the stock to ₹550. At 9:36 a.m., on Wednesday, shares of the company were trading nearly 15% higher at ₹483. Automobile maker Tata Motors' subsidiary Tata Passenger Electric Mobility on Monday signed a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with <keyword id="106216" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ford-india" source="Orion">Ford India</keyword> and the government of Gujarat for takeover of Ford's passenger vehicle manufacturing facility at Sanand. The MoU included land and buildings; vehicle manufacturing plant; machinery and equipment; and besides transfer of all eligible employees of Ford India's Sanand's vehicle manufacturing operations, subject to the signing of definitive agreements and receipt of relevant approvals, the automaker said in a regulatory filing. The Ford India vehicle manufacturing site at Sanand is a state-of-the-art site. Tata Motors' arm would invest into new machinery and equipment which is necessary to commission and make the unit ready to produce its vehicles. With the proposed investments, it would establish an installed capacity of 300,000 units per annum, which would be scalable to more than 400,000 units, the filing said, adding it would take a few months time. Notably, the unit is adjacent to the existing manufacturing facility of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles at Sanand, which it believes will help in a smooth transition. "Tata Motors has had a strong presence in Gujarat for more than a decade with its own manufacturing facility at Sanand. This MoU further reinforces our commitment to the state by creating more employment and business opportunities. Rising customer preference for passenger and electric vehicles made by Tata Motors has led to a multi-fold growth for the company over the past few years," said Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility. This potential transaction will support expansion of capacity, thus securing future growth and opportunity to further strengthen the company's position in the passenger and electric vehicles space, Chandra said. Ratan Tata joins Instagram and gets almost 3,000 followers within an hour

Revenue from JLR fell by a billion dollars in the year ending March 2019 and made profit in only one of the four quarters last year. Last year, Tata Motors had to take an impairment-- write down the value-- of ₹27,838 crore due to weak sales and profitability at JLR. Things continue to look bleak even after 4,500 jobs were axed. This posed a question in front of N Chandrasekharan, the Chairman of the group's parent Tata Sons, on how long will the conglomerate continue to back the bleeding giant. "A company cannot shut the cash tap as the very nature of this business demands continuous investment in product and technology development," he <a href="https://www.indiatvnews.com/auto/cars-jaguar-land-rover-looking-for-financial-partnership-in-china-tata-chairman-n-chandrasekaran-539207" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">reportedly</a> said at the Annual General Meeting. "There are many discussions from tactical to strategic for such partnerships. Opportunities are coming and we keep evaluating them and as long as it is in the interest of Tata Motors. We will forge such partnerships so that we are able to address the capex issue," he told the shareholders.  Any recovery for the JLR hinges a lot on how Brexit unfolds. “Uncertainty around an orderly outcome of Brexit negotiations and the evolving global tariffs situation pose risks, in particular to TML's JLR business, which faces a significant level of production-sales mismatch due to concentration of its production base in the UK,” global ratings agency Fitch said while downgrading Tata Motors for JLR's troubles. Aside from Brexit, the US-China trade war and <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/markets/stocks/news/tata-motors-mulls-selling-stake-in-jlr-agencies/articleshow/68216938.cms">signs</a> of a slowdown in the global economy are also compounding JLR's problems. China has traditionally been one of the biggest markets for the luxury car but sale volumes fell a sharp 29% between April and June this year, compared to the same time last year. A month back, credit rating agency Moody’s had downgraded Tata Motors. In addition to JLR related troubles, Tata Motors’ domestic business is also troubled by a general slowdown in the auto market. In June 2019, Tata Motors <a href="https://www.moneycontrol.com/news/business/companies/tata-motors-global-sales-dip-5-in-june-4195251.html">reported </a>a 14% decline in India sales, while a 5% drop was seen in global sales. Tata Motors is looking for partnerships to revive Jaguar Land Rover

Greater Noida, Feb 5 () Tata Group Chairman N Chandrasekaran on Wednesday said Tata Motors will launch at least four more products in the next 18-24 months with focus on sustainability and electric vehicles. The company is focusing on - CESS: connected, electric, shared and safe - as the future of mobility. "Tata Motors is pushing the envelope with other group companies on safety... We have launched two models since we unveiled Tigor in 2017, and Nexa last week, at least four more products will be coming in the next 18-24 months," Chandrasekaran said. He added that Tata Motors is working with seven other group companies, and expects to invest continuously to expand its endeavours to drive electric vehicles and sustainable mobility in India. Tata Motors on Wednesday announced four global unveils, a pre-production preview and a commercial launch at the Auto Expo here. It launched the Harrier which will be priced Rs 13.69 lakh onwards for manual and Rs 16.25 lakh for automatic variant. It also showcases the pre-production version of its Gravitas SUV that is scheduled to be launched in the first half of FY2021. The company will allow test drive of its Nexon EV, besides showcasing the new Winger and Prima. Tata Motors also unveiled the HBX Show car based on ALFA ARC architecture, and the Sierra EV concept as well as the Hexa Safari edition. New Delhi, <keyword id="19906967" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tata-motors" source="keywords">Tata Motors</keyword> on Monday said its board has approved the proposal to demerge the company into two separate listed entities. The commercial vehicles business and its related investments would be housed in one entity while the passenger vehicles businesses including PV (Passenger Vehicle), EV (Electric Vehicle), <keyword id="19916884" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="jlr" source="keywords">JLR</keyword> ( Jaguar Land Rover), and its related investments would be part of the other entity, the auto major said in a regulatory filing. The demerger will be implemented through an <keyword id="19901085" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nclt" source="keywords">NCLT</keyword> scheme of arrangement and all shareholders of <keyword id="20320550" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tml" source="keywords">TML</keyword> (<keyword id="20176909" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tata-motors-ltd" source="keywords">Tata Motors Ltd</keyword>) shall continue to have identical shareholding in both the listed entities, it added. Tata Motors to demerge biz into two separate listed companies

If a affidavit filed by Tatas before the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) is to be believed, the differences between <keyword id="6360722" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="ratan-tata">Ratan Tata</keyword>, the chairman of Tata Trusts, and <keyword id="6356895" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Cyrus-Mistry">Cyrus Mistry</keyword>, the ousted chairman of <keyword id="46894" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tata-Sons">Tata Sons</keyword>, were simmering since 2013. 
 
Presently, NCLT is looking over the petition filed by Mistry alleging mismanagement and oppression of minority shareholders of Tata Sons and seeking the ouster of the current management of Tata Trusts and Tata Sons. 
 The affidavit highlighted that Mistry did a poor job of turning around companies such as <keyword id="6357147" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tata-Steel">Tata Steel</keyword> and <keyword id="42747" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tata-Motors">Tata Motors</keyword>, resulting in a fall in dividends to the Tata Trusts. 
 
It also said that he has a minor stake in Tata Sons and, therefore, it is the real stakeholders including Mistry's investment firms which are suffering on account of the losses incurred by Tata Steel Europe, Tata called the insinuation distressing. 
 It is the trusts which hold a majority stake far exceeding that of Mistry's firms. "Such inconsiderate allegations effectively degrade my lifelong contribution to the success story of the <keyword id="6355725" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tata-Group">Tata Group</keyword>, which began with Tata Motors and Tata Steel more than five decades back,” Tata said in his 37-page affidavit. 
 
Further, raking up of transactions of personal nature suggested that Mistry and the petitioners held "personal animus, against him. 
 
He said it was with a "heavy heart, that he came to terms with the fact that the group had "faltered, in their judgement when they chose Mistry as chairman. It stated that Mistry has failed to "graciously accept, the decision of the very same board that appointed him as chairman. 
 
The affidavit also provided a detailed account of why the board lost confidence in Mistry's ability to "steer and lead,. According to Tata, Mistry did little to resurrect companies such as Tata Motors. Further, dividends received by Tata Trusts declined.

Jaguar Land Rover global sales continued to decline in May with the company reporting a 12% dip in <a href="https://www.moneycontrol.com/news/business/jaguar-land-rover-global-sales-dip-12-in-may-4086381.html">May 2019.</a> Brexit, US-China trade war and <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/markets/stocks/news/tata-motors-mulls-selling-stake-in-jlr-agencies/articleshow/68216938.cms">signs</a> of a slowdown in the global economy could be the reasons for the losses incurred by JLR. China, which has traditionally been one of the biggest markets for the luxury car. For the quarter ending December 31, Tata Sons’ Jaguar Land Rover <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/neilwinton/2019/02/07/jaguar-land-rover-hit-by-big-loss/#2852de8aa0a8">saw </a>a loss of $3.4 billion following a big write-down. It was also in cost cutting mode, and <a href="http://fortune.com/2019/01/10/jaguar-land-rover-layoffs-job-cuts/">reportedly</a> axed 4,500 jobs late last year. "The downgrade reflects our expectation that it will take longer than we had previously expected for the company's free cash flows to return to positive territory," said Kaustubh Chaubal, Moody's Vice President and Senior Credit Officer, adding that rising competition, the potential for a 'no-deal' Brexit, and the possibility of US tariffs cast bigger shadows on the company's prospects. JLR is landing heavily on Tata Motors which is facing challenges in the Indian market which is now facing sales slowdown leading to overcapacity in the market, as the number of auto dealers are <a href="https://qz.com/india/1644063/indias-auto-slowdown-chokes-delhis-maruti-hyundai-dealers/">shrinking</a>.

New Delhi, Jan 6 () Tata Motors did not produce a single unit of its entry-level car Nano in 2019 although it sold just one unit in February even as the company is yet to officially retire Ratan Tata's "people's car". 
According to a regulatory filing by the company, Tata Motors had zero production and sales of the Nano in December 2019 while it produced 82 units and sold 88 units in December 2018.
Similarly, in November 2019 there was zero production and sales of the entry-level model, whereas in the year-ago period it produced 66 units and sold 77 units.
 In October 2019 also, according to the filing, it did not produce or sell any unit of the Nano while in the year-ago month it rolled out 71 units while selling 54 units.
 In the first nine months of 2019 also Tata Motors did not produce a single unit of Nano.
 The company did not sell a single unit in any month last year except February when it sold just one, according to several regulatory filings by the company.
 Tata Motors has so far been maintaining that no decision has been made yet on the future of the Nano saying production planning of a car is a "conscious management of demand, system inventory and planned efficiencies".
It has, however, admitted that in its current form the Nano will not meet the new safety regulations and BS-VI emission norms. 
Tata Motors had unveiled Nano in January 2008 at the Auto Expo with much expectations of being "the people's car", as dubbed by the then Tata group chief Ratan Tata. However, it could not live up to the billing with sales dwindling over the years.
 On the issue of discontinuing the Nano, the company has been insisting that "decisions on product life cycle is a holistic view taken after considering the market developments, regulations and emerging competitive landscape. Any such decisions are announced as and when it's taken".
 Company officials had, however, hinted that production and sales of the Nano would stop from April 2020 as Tata Motors has no plans to invest further on the model to meet strict emission norms under Bharat Stage-VI, which come into effect from April 1 this year and other safety regulations.
 The Nano was launched in the market in March 2009 with an initial price of close to Rs 1 lakh for the basic model despite cost escalations, with Tata insisting that "a promise is a promise".
 However, from the beginning, Nano courted trouble. It was originally planned to be rolled out from Tata Motors' proposed plant at Singur in West Bengal, where it faced intense political and farmer protests against land acquisition. The company had to shift its production to a new plant at Sanand in Gujarat.
 Instances of the car catching fire initially after it was launched didn't help its cause either. Tata had admitted that the company made the mistake of promoting the Nano as 'the cheapest car'.
 It became a loss-making model for Tata Motors with ex-Tata Sons chairman Mistry, who was abruptly removed from the post, even claiming that the Nano "consistently lost value, peaking at Rs 1,000 crore".
 Mistry also termed the Nano one of the "legacy hotspots" and there was "no line of sight to profitability for the Nano, (or) any turnaround strategy".
 He had also claimed that Tata Motors did not stop producing the car due to "emotional reasons". RKL ANU

Tata Nano ends 2019 with zero production, sales of 1 unit

New Delhi, Dec 19 () Shares of various Tata Group companies remained under pressure on Thursday as well, falling up to 2 per cent in morning trade, after the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) restored Cyrus Mistry as Tata Sons Chairman.
 Tata Power Company fell 1.62 per cent, Tata Coffee declined 1.52 per cent, Tata Metaliks dipped 1.60 per cent, Tata Steel 1.46 per cent and Tata Communications 1.23 per cent on the BSE in early trade.
 The scrip of Tata Global Beverages fell 0.89 per cent, Indian Hotels Company slipped 0.62 per cent, Titan Company 0.46 per cent, Tata Motors 0.37, Tata Investment Corporation 0.14 per cent and Tata Consultancy Services stock fell 0.10 per cent.
 However, later some of these scrips such as Tata Motors and TCS bounced back and were trading with gains.
 Various group scrips had fallen up to 4 per cent in the previous trade after the order.
 In a big win for Cyrus Mistry, a company law appeals court on Wednesday restored him as executive chairman of Tata Sons and ruled that appointment of N Chandrasekaran as head of the holding company of over USD 110 billion salt-to-software conglomerate was illegal.
 It, however, stayed the operation of the order with respect to reinstatement for four weeks to allow Tatas to appeal.
 Mistry, scion of the wealthy Shapoorji Pallonji family, had in December 2012 succeeded Ratan Tata as the Executive Chairman of Tata Sons, a post that also made him the head of all Tata group listed firms such as Tata Power and Tata Motors. 
 In an overnight coup, he was removed as the Chairman of Tata Sons in October 2016. Along with him, the entire senior management too was purged and Ratan Tata was back at the helms of affairs four years after he took retirement. SUM ANS
