Drawing flak from various quarters over the intolerance row, the federal government today slammed the opposition and cited Hitler’s actions in Germany in 1930s to hit out at the Congress. 
 Speaking in Rajya Sabha, India’s <keyword id="6391015" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Finance-Minister-Arun-Jaitley">Finance Minister Arun Jaitley</keyword> said Emergency was imposed by "subverting" the Constitution. He added that during Emergency, "dictatorship was at its worst" as even right to life and liberty was suspended. 
 
Initiating a discussion on the 'Commitment to India's Constitution', Jaitley stressed measures are needed to be taken to strengthen the Constitution and ensure that democracy is not subverted again. 
 
Addressing the House, Jaitley narrated the sequence of events that took place in Hitler's regime, suggesting that these were replicated by Indira Gandhi who imposed Emergency in 1975. 
 
"There are worst illustrations in history when Constitutional systems are used to subvert the Constitution... You have the most glaring example in the world when in 1933 in Germany Emergency was declared," he said. 
 
Jaitley added Hitler, using the pretext of a threat to "set ablaze the German Parliament", imposed Emergency, detained opposition to gain majority for amending the Constitution, censured the press and came out with a 25-point economic programme. 
 
"You impose Emergency, detain opposition, amend the Constitution, impose censorship on newspapers and announce a 25-point economic programme. 
 
"Thereafter, you brought a law that no action taken by government was justiciable in court and then Hitler's immediate adviser Rudolf Hess in his speech ended by a sentence that 'Adolf Hitler is Germany, Germany is Adolf Hitler'," he said. 
 
Though he said he was only referring to the events of 1933 in Germany, Jaitley was apparently citing similarities to actions during Indira Gandhi's regime when it was said 'Indira is India, India is Indira'. 
 
"What happened in other parts of the world later, Germany never claimed a copyright," the finance minister said.

Constitution Day: Arun Jaitley compares Hitler to Indira Gandhi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the Indian society was tied to the Constitution and to the country’s great values and tradition. 
 
Addressing the Rajya Sabha, Modi said, “Our society should take up the responsibility of reforming itself and discarding incorrect practices of past.” 
 
He also reiterated his programme 'Ek Bharat Shreshtra Bharat', adding that there were many reasons to be divided, but Indians should look for reasons to be united. 
 
PM Modi also quoted Dr Radhakrishnan, Jawaharlal Nehru. 
 
“Pandit Nehru said to make our Constitution effective like any democracy there should be a mutual cooperation between both the Houses. People involved in drafting the Constitution were affiliated to the Congress, we should see this in a positive manner,” he said. 
 
Dr Radhakrishnan, said on August 14, from tomorrow we cannot blame Britishers, whatever we do we will be responsible, said Modi. 
 
“We have to introspect, look at the vision of our founding fathers and raise our level far more,” said Modi. 
 
The prime minister said Constitution should be a celebration and the message of the Constitution must reach the future generations.

Intolerance debate: PM Modi says we should look for reasons to be united

The ongoing <keyword id="3125106" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="intolerance-debate">intolerance debate</keyword> seems to have caught everyone’s attention, actors and industrialists alike. 
 The latest person to comment on 'intolerance' is industrialist <keyword id="6360722" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="ratan-tata">Ratan Tata</keyword>, Chairman Emeritus of Tata Sons. He said that people should have the freedom to decide what they want to do and governments should have no role in telling them about it. As per Tata, this is something that can make the nation shine. 
 
"If India is to shine now and in future, people must have the freedom to decide. While governments can be in the business of monitoring, they should have no role in telling people what to do," Tata stated. He was interacting with students of SRM University at Kattankulathur. 
 
"If India should shine let people have the freedom to decide," stated his release.

Ratan Tata speaks on intolerance, says government should not tell people what to do

As the <keyword id="3003094" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Startup-India">Startup India</keyword>, <keyword id="3016671" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Standup-India">Standup India</keyword> event is underway in New Delhi, Congress vice-president <keyword id="5268" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rahul-Gandhi">Rahul Gandhi</keyword> hit out at PM <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> in Mumbai. 
 
While addressing management students in Vile Parle, Gandhi said there is a contradiction in pushing for startups and being "intolerant". 
 
"The ruling dispensation, particularly the RSS, has a clear idea on what the world should look like. They have a vision for India which in my opinion is a very rigid vision. This country requires flexibility, openness and movement of ideas," Gandhi said. 
 
"There's a huge contradiction in saying I want startups but I will be intolerant. You will fail on the economy and start up front if you are intolerant," Gandhi added. 
 
The Congress leader said that startups required free movement of ideas. 
 
"The BJP has categories: There's a Hindu for them, a Muslim for them, a woman for them. I don't categorise. That's the difference between us and them," he said. 
 
"Startups require a whole set of eco systems that allows entrepreneurs to grow including infrastructure and regulation. The biggest problem is red tape. Today, if you are a Rs 10000 crore company, you can't easily get finance. If you are a big business, you can get around regulations and put pressure on politicians," he said.

Rahul Gandhi trains guns on Modi, says startups and intolerance can’t go hand in hand

The Winter Session of the Indian parliament has begun and it is going to be a stormy session as a slew of important bills, including the GST bill, is going to passed. 
 The first day of the Winter Session began on a peaceful note as the members of Lok Sabha marked <keyword id="1536706" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Constitution-Day">Constitution Day</keyword> and paid a tribute to <keyword id="116616" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="BR-Ambedkar">BR Ambedkar</keyword>. 
 Addressing the lower house of the parliament, India’s <keyword id="2286211" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Home-Minister-Rajnath-Singh">Home Minister Rajnath Singh</keyword> indirectly spoke about the ongoing intolerance debate in the country. 
 
"The makers of the constitution believed that the Preamble is the soul of the Constitution and no changes should be made to that. Socialist and Secular - these words were added to the Constitution later. Dr Ambedkar didn't find it necessary to insert them in the Preamble because he felt it was already an integral part of India. Despite facing condemnation and insult, BR Ambedkar said he would stay in India and strengthen the country," he said. 
 
Singh said the word 'secular' was being misused in Indian politics. His remarks indirectly condemned Aamir Khan’s statements also. 
 
It seems the Opposition will question the government on the growing intolerance debate in India. However, the government said it is committed to passing crucial bills and ready to discuss all issues, including intolerance.

Constitution Day: Rajnath Singh says word ‘Secular’
is misused in Indian politics

Every year has its own share of controversies and interesting twists and turns play a crucial role in the events. The year 2015 was no exception either. This year too, the country had its incidents, incidences and things that cropped up as aftermath, making some of them hot cakes in terms of news this year. 
 
As we close in on wrapping up the year, here’s what made the headlines in 2015 and shaped the country’s opinion both, socially and politically, sometimes ushering in major change in perception about the country in the world’s eyes. 
 
<keyword id="3119826" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Award-Wapsi">Award Wapsi</keyword> This must have been the most significant event of the year and happened right before the <keyword id="175111" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bihar-elections">Bihar elections</keyword>. Award wapsi, a movement of sorts, was started a little while after murder of rationalist thinker and writer M M Kalburgi in Karnataka. Writers Nayantara Sehgal and Uday Prakash were among those who set the tone. This year, the biggest literary event was not a book release or something, but more like a writer standing up for his right to speak what he sees as truth. The writers were chided for siding with Congress party since most of them received awards during the tenure of Congress government. 
 
National Herald case 
Apart from Award Wapsi, this was another headline grabber which almost made demi gods out of Congress first line leaders. AICC Chairperson Sonia Gandhi and her son Rahul Gandhi made an appearance in court over murky National Herald assets usurping case, which cost the country quite dearly since Congress stalled the discussions over some crucial issues such as GST in parliament, over ‘vendetta’ politics. 
 
Modi Pakistan-Afghan visit 
Towards the end of the year, the Prime Minister who has been jocularly targeted for his trips aboard sprang up a surprise and visited his counterpart in Pakistan absolutely out of turn, thus catching everyone by surprise. His move was both appreciated and criticized in equal measures by those who love him, and by those who simply didn’t like this approach. But, it looks like the White House seems to have welcomed this new found bonhomie between neighbours who have been sworn enemies over several issues. 
 
Shah Rukh, Aamir Khan’s (controversial) intolerance remarks 
This year when people spoke of social and cultural differences, they were targeted on social media and how! Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan who spoke against the rising incidents of ‘intolerance’ and the subsequent fear that has been the result of this, they were targeted badly for everything they said and did. Many from Bollywood including Raveena Tandon, Madhur Bhandarkar and Anupam Kher condemned these remarks made by the two Khans. The issue still simmers on. 
 
No women in temples, so what! 
It started with Ayyappan temple in Sabarimala, Kerala where a trustee said they would put scanners soon to keep menstruating women from visiting temples and angering the gods. Soon after, BJP leader Pankaja Munde in Mumbai seemed to have agreed with this line of thought. She asked, in all calm tone, yes women have not been allowed to visit temples in particular days. So what?! This irked feminists and people across the social media, who ensured their spoke their minds against this medieval stance against menstruating women. 
 
Meat ban during Paryushan Parva 
The BJP government in Maharashtra banned meat during the Jain fasting period called Paryushan Parva. This angered people from across social strata, who were sure that the BJP was driving a wedge between communities that ate meat and those that didn’t consume meat. This was called a social experiment of the worst kind, which would have repercussions on people’s food habits where forced opinions would mean democracy had ceased to exist even in people food habits. 
 
Sadhvi Prachi 
In keeping with the continued tradition of letting lose a volley of abuses and irrational statements, asking people to go to Pakistan if they were opposed to the ideologies of BJP government which predominantly upheld Hindu values and the way of life, that an alternate faith was next to impossible. Sadhvi Prachi being just a representative of all those medieval thoughts and barbaric mindset, kept the newspapers busy with her idiosyncrasies while BJP leadership failed to rein her in. 
 
Yakub Memon 
Hanging of 1997 Mumbai blast main accused Yakub Memon, who was held guilty by courts in 2007 the country witnessed some tense moments and swift working by the courts even on the previous night he was to be hanged on July 30. 
 
Though his death didn’t create a law and order situation, international media lost no opportunity to ensure this incident was bracketed under ‘intolerance’ towards Muslim brethren. 
 
Bihar elections 
This was the single most significant incident that probably indicated the image of BJP was on a journey downhill. Having doled out goodies in form of packages, and most engaging and intense campaigning by the who’s who of BJP including Amit Shah and PM Narendra Modi, the MahagatBandhan with Nitish Kumar and Lalu at the helm held people’s hopes. That is where exactly their votes went too. But in the run up to event, there was a lot of bad blood that spilled forth.

Political controversies that made headlines in 2015

After Bollywood’s superstar Shah Rukh Khan raised the issue that there was intolerance in the country, latest to join him is actor <keyword id="6355923" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Aamir-Khan">Aamir Khan</keyword>. 
 
Aamir, while speaking at an award ceremony of a news daily, said his wife Kiran Rao had asked if they should move out of the country, as she feared for the safety of their children in a climate of insecurity. 
 
Following the Dadri lynching case, many people have raised their concerns over intolerance and sparked debates. So much so that writers, academicians, historians, etc even returned their awards. 
 
“There is an increased sense of despondency over the past 6-8 months. Important that those in power strongly condemn what's wrong. Historians, scientists have had a view to express. Returning awards is one way of getting your point across," said Aamir. 
 
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in UK, had said that there was no place in intolerance in the country. 
 
"Any event in any corner of India - it doesn't matter if there are even one or two incidents - we will not tolerate it and the law will deal with it strictly. India is a vibrant democracy where the lives, views and thoughts of ordinary citizens are protected under the Constitution. We are committed to this," Modi had said in the UK. 
 
However, Aamir’s statement was slammed by another Bollywood actor Anupam Kher. 
 
He took to microblogging site Twitter and condemned Aamir’s remarks on intolerance in India.

Aamir Khan says India is unlivable, increasingly intolerant. His wife suggested moving out of India

Bits of the episode have been making rounds online and a certain clip caught our attention. In one of the clips from the show, Saif is seen explaining to the audience that he has stopped consuming parathas ever since his blood tests revealed that he was allergic to milk and bread. <div type="Youtube" id="YgOa2Zpig1Q" title="Triple the Laughter: Jr. NTR, Saif, Janhvi | The Great Indian Kapil Show | Bacha Hua Content" thumbUrl="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/YgOa2Zpig1Q/mqdefault.jpg"><url><![CDATA[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YgOa2Zpig1Q]]></url></div>His co-star Janhvi responded saying, “Yeh sab faaltu ke allergy test hote hain. Hum sab itne sadiyon se doodh, maida-vaida sab khaate aa rahe hain” (all these allergy tests are nonsense. We have been drinking milk and consuming flour for ages). While this may have been the young actor’s mostly harmless attempt at sounding relatable, gluten and <keyword id="20158013" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="lactose-intolerance" source="keywords">lactose intolerance</keyword> is a real health concern for millions of Indians. And taking these tests is among the most recommended ways to understand and alter our diets. <h2>Gluten allergy is not new in India, gluten is!</h2>A gluten allergy, often referred to as <keyword id="22227619" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gluten-intolerance" source="keywords">gluten intolerance</keyword> or non-celiac gluten sensitivity (NCGS), is a condition where the immune system reacts negatively to gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley and rye. Unlike celiac disease, gluten sensitivity does not cause damage to the small intestine, but it can trigger uncomfortable symptoms such as bloating, diarrhoea, constipation, fatigue and headaches after consuming gluten-containing foods — such as bread. When asked if more and more Indians were reporting gluten allergies, nutritionist Dr Meghana Pasi explained that it wasn’t entirely true. “An increase in the Indians’ wheat consumption was a result of colonisation”, she said. Most Indians primarily consumed millet before the British’s influence and wheat became a staple in our diets roughly between 50-100 years ago. And it has taken a few decades to associate the discomfort many feel after consuming wheat with a gluten allergy. So, claiming that gluten consumption is perfectly okay since people in the past did it too, is infact entirely inaccurate. <h2>A significant proportion of Indians are lactose intolerant</h2>After Janhvi implies that these allergies are a hoax, Saif attempts to correct her saying, “Hum jab bade ho jate hai to sab cheezein nahi khani chahiye, bacho ko khani chhaiye ( We should refrain from eating certain things when we get older; kids should eat all of this).” In response Janhvi says, "Main toh doodh peeti hun (I still drink milk).” Anecdotal fallacy again. Sigh. Lactose intolerance is a digestive condition where the body is unable to fully digest lactose, the sugar found in milk and dairy products. This happens when the small intestine doesn't produce enough of the enzyme lactase, which is needed to break down lactose into simpler sugars for absorption. As a result, lactose passes undigested into the colon, where bacteria ferment it, causing symptoms like bloating, diarrhoea, gas and stomach cramps. The severity of symptoms varies, depending on how much lactose a person can tolerate. This author, for instance, needs just one pizza slice to develop a terrible gastric headache that leads to violent episodes of puking. Regarding her claim that we have been consuming milk for ages, India has seen a notable rise in lactose intolerance as dietary patterns evolve. Studies suggest that one-third of Indians may have some degree of lactose intolerance due to genetic factors. Historically, the diet in many parts of India included fermented or low-lactose dairy products like yogurt and paneer, which are easier to digest. However, the growing consumption of milk-based products and <keyword id="20490015" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="processed-foods" source="keywords">processed foods</keyword> may be contributing to more visible cases of lactose intolerance. Furthermore, even without the intolerance debate, science has shown that humans’ capacity to absorb milk decreases as we grow old. By the time we’re in our mid-thirties, these problems can manifest as gastrointestinal problems like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and gastro-esophagal reflux disease (GERD). So, while Janhvi Kapoor's casual dismissal of gluten and lactose allergies may have been made in jest, it brought forth a good opportunity to discuss a larger issue of misinformation about <keyword id="23476473" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="dietary-sensitivities" source="keywords">dietary sensitivities</keyword>. As allergies and intolerances become more widely understood and recognised, particularly in the Indian context, it’s important to acknowledge that the foods we’ve consumed for generations may no longer suit everyone. Of late, many celebrities like Janhvi, who boast millions of followers, have been caught spreading health-related misinformation intentionally or unintentionally. Despite their access to the best nutritionists and doctors, such misguided statements show blatant disregard for public health. <div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="111515126" title="Samantha Ruth Prabhu faces heavy backlash after recommending hydrogen peroxide inhalation to cure viral fever" mstype="2" mssubtype="0"></div>Instead, as a society, we should aim to foster a more nuanced understanding of how individual bodies react to different foods over time and the role modern science plays in identifying these sensitivities. In an era of growing health awareness, informed conversations around food intolerances can lead to better lifestyle choices for many.
