Google Search's new AI makeover is the latest change the rest of the internet needs to navigate

India has witnessed the fastest jump in alternative payment share for <keyword id="21422684" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="e-commerce-payments" source="keywords">e-commerce payments</keyword> in the <keyword id="20122305" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Asia-Pacific-region" source="keywords">Asia-pacific region</keyword> from 20.4% in 2018 to 58.1% in 2023 as per a report by GlobalData, a data and analytics company. Options for payment other than traditional cash include <keyword id="19900911" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="UPI" source="keywords">UPI</keyword>, <keyword id="6354770" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="debit-cards" source="Orion">debit cards</keyword> and <keyword id="6387037" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="credit-cards" source="Orion">credit cards</keyword> among others. "This significant uptake of alternative payment solutions can be attributed to the widespread usage of <keyword id="21223853" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mobile-wallets" source="keywords">mobile wallets</keyword>, largely driven by UPI, which facilitates mobile payments in real-time simply by scanning <keyword id="19993724" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="QR-codes" source="keywords">QR codes</keyword>," GlobalData report elaborated. The report highlights that in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region, the payment solutions such as mobile and digital wallets have displaced traditional payment methods like cash and bank transfers for e-commerce payments. The report states that such alternative payments are already immensely popular in countries like <keyword id="1334" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="china" source="Orion">China</keyword> and India and are also gaining traction in other APAC markets as well. However, China led the way in 2023, with alternative payments accounting for nearly two-thirds of the total e-commerce payments value in 2023 that took place in the entire Asia Pacific region. However, India is also not far behind, with a significant surge in alternative payment methods since 2018. The e-commerce analytics by the company revealed that even traditionally cash-intensive countries in APAC such as the Philippines, Malaysia, and Indonesia, are witnessing a similar trend. "While most Asian markets are traditionally cash-dominated, the adoption of alternative payment methods for both online and in-store payments is growing across many markets in the region, even outpacing the West. This trend is driven by the rising smartphone and internet accessibility, increasing convenience of electronic payments, and the proliferation of mobile and QR code-based payment solutions" said Shiv Gupta, Senior Banking and Payments Analyst at GlobalData. The report also highlights that within the Asia-Pacific region, China and India have a higher adoption rate of alternative payment methods as compared to their peers. According to the company's 2023 Financial Services Consumer Survey, alternative payment solutions account for more than 65% of the e-commerce transaction value in China, the largest e-commerce market globally. It represents a significant increase from 53.4% in 2018. Other Asian markets like Indonesia, Hong Kong, Singapore, and the Philippines are also seeing higher adoption of alternative payment solutions. "Alternative payment solutions accounts for lion share in e-commerce markets across many APAC countries, supported by rising internet and smartphone penetration, and growing acceptance of digital payments by merchants. With the convenience, speed, and security they offer, coupled with high expected growth in the overall e-commerce market in the region, these payment tools are anticipated to further gain traction and disrupt the consumer payment space in the region" said Gupta.

India's non-cash payments on e-commerce platforms surge to 58.1% in 2023

These could be levying charges without notice, credit card-related issues, no cash disposal at an ATM even after the money is deducted and so on. You are not alone! Recently, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) reported that the complaints to the Ombudsman have gone up by 68 per cent in 2022-23, with a total of 7,03,544 complaints. One-fifth of the complaints were concerning mobile and internet banking, while another-fifth were concerning loans and advances. The central bank’s “One Nation One Ombudsman” principle provides a single window for complaints against regulated entities, including banks, Non-Banking Financial Companies (NBFCs), Payment System Participants and Credit Information Companies. So, if you have any grievance, what can we do to get it resolved? First, register your complaint with the bank The first line of complaint is the bank branch. One may call up the customer care service for resolution of the complaint. If that does not address the problem, one needs to approach the respective bank branch. “Fill in your complaint at the complaint register of the bank. If not available, ask for it or fill it up online on the bank’s website,” says Hina Shah, director, of LUHEM, a financial planning firm. Next, complain to the nodal officer To address unresolved complaints with a bank, customers can contact the nodal officer of the bank, designated to handle escalated issues. Locate the nodal officer's details on the bank's official website, typically found under "Customer Grievance Redressal”. Prepare a detailed complaint, including relevant dates and transaction details. Draft a formal complaint letter or email, specifying your expectations for resolution. Include previous complaint reference numbers if available. Submit the complaint to the nodal officer through the provided contact details. Approach the ombudsman if not resolved in a month If the bank does not resolve the complaint within a month, approach the ombudsman. “If you are not satisfied with the resolution or if you don't receive a response within 30 days, you can approach the RBI Ombudsman. You can file your complaint online through the RBI's complaint management system (CMS) portal or send it via email or post to the Ombudsman office jurisdictional to your bank's location,” says Adhil Shetty, CEO of BankBazaar. Make sure to include all relevant details and documents supporting your complaint while raising it. As a general guideline, the <keyword id="339657" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="banking-ombudsman" source="Orion">Banking Ombudsman</keyword> aims to resolve complaints within a reasonable time frame. The ombudsman should address the complaint within one month. However, this may be extended to two months in certain cases, considering the complexity of the matter. It's important to note that the timeline can also be affected by the cooperation of the complainant and the bank involved in providing necessary information promptly. iPhone 13 to Redmi Note 12 – Best deals on 5G smartphones

New Delhi [India], March 20 (ANI): Payments through digital means in India are hitting fresh highs, as its citizens are increasingly adopting the emerging modes of transacting on the internet. In February, transactions worth Rs 18.2 lakh crore were made through Unified Payments Interface (<keyword id="19900911" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="upi" source="keywords">UPI</keyword>) with a staggering 122 crore number of transactions. The transactions made last month through the popular instant payment mechanism were a tad lower than in January, where the total value of transactions was Rs 18.4 lakh crore. The total number of transactions recorded in the month of January was 121 crore. Data maintained by the <keyword id="19907219" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="national-payments-corporation-of-india" source="keywords">National Payments Corporation of India</keyword> (NPCI) showed that an average of Rs 40,000-Rs 80,000 crore worth of UPI transactions are made in India on a daily basis. Coming to NEFT and RTGS, the two other instruments for online payments, the average transactions made through these were an average of Rs 33.85 lakh crore and Rs 146 lakh crore, respectively, data showed. Coming to internet banking and mobile banking, transactions worth Rs 91.24 lakh crore and Rs 28.16 lakh crore, respectively, were made in January 2024. Notably, India today accounts for nearly 46 per cent of the world's digital transactions (as per 2022 data). The share of UPI in digital payments in India has reached close to 80 per cent in 2023, informed <keyword id="19899810" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="reserve-bank-of-india" source="keywords">Reserve Bank of India</keyword> (RBI) Governor <keyword id="19913110" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="shaktikanta-das" source="keywords">Shaktikanta Das</keyword> earlier this month, as he outlined the growth of the payments ecosystem in the country. The RBI governor had said India has not only navigated through the fast-evolving technological innovations but also played a pivotal role, as a catalyst, in developing one of the most modern payment systems in the world. Retail digital payments in India have grown from 162 crore transactions in the financial year 2012-13 to over 14,726 crore transactions in 2023-24 (till February 2024) -- approximately a 90-fold increase over 12 years. UPI is India's mobile-based fast payment system, which facilitates customers to make round-the-clock payments instantly, using a Virtual Payment Address (<keyword id="20478991" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="vpa" source="keywords">VPA</keyword>) created by the customer. The UPI payment system has become hugely popular for retail digital payments in India, and its adoption is increasing at a rapid pace. "I'm not as good of a salesman as I thought I was," he joked. "But it's been a good start."One of Sampath's goals is to simplify. To him, that includes using AI to help workers "reduce cognitive load" — meaning all the information they must keep in their heads and relay to fellow employees.Sampath's 2024 goal is for Verizon to be "the world's best AI-applied company" and use it daily — first within internal workflows, then for customer interactions."We have a very bold ambition," he said.But first, it's imperative to test out AI-driven processes with "pilots and trials." "I want to put them in production, responsibly," he added. "I don't want the algo doing things I wouldn't do myself."Sampath's insights are part of BI's year-end leadership package "Looking Ahead 2024" that digs into vision, strategy, and challenges across corporate America.The following interview has been edited for length and clarity.What are you most excited about for 2024?I want to be the world's best AI-applied company. I think there's something interesting about AI: Everyone talks about it. Everyone claims they love technology, but no one's using it at scale.The gap between technology and adoption is never this big. Even previous technology jumps — there was always a little gap between the technology's greatness and adoption. Here, the technology is light years ahead of what's being adopted.I would like to be one of the first companies to adopt it at scale and for production — for our sales, service teams, and install teams are going to be supercritical. We're doing ungodly amounts of work to make that happen in 2024. We'd probably be one of the first companies to do it at the scale we're working on.I want my reps and call centers and salespeople to use it. Second, I want to infuse it deep into the product stack. I've got six or seven very clear use cases that we are pretty far along on.But step one is internal. Step two is customer interactions.What are you most worried about for 2024?Uncertainty. There's not a single 2024 plan or document I write or I look at that doesn't have the word "uncertainty" in it.The uncertainty is coming from a few areas. The first is interest rates, which are driven by our fiscal policy. Are long-term interest rates here — are long-term interest rates high? Or do we go back to something a little more benign? It's going to have a pretty radical impact our customers' behavior.There's uncertainty about the economy. There's uncertainty with elections looming, and it's going to be massively polarizing. Along with geopolitical uncertainty and potential supply shocks as well.I've never seen a year that has everything baked into it. The US has done very well in last three, four years compared to the rest of the world, because we are playing the long game. We are investing for the future. We're not cutting back on investment.My biggest worry is with all this uncertainty: Folks like myself saying, "You know what? The uncertainty is too much. I'm going to pull back and wait and watch." Many people in my role do it.There is nothing more stressful than "wait and watch." Because then the economy comes to a grinding halt and everyone's watching the other person, and it has far-reaching implications.Stay firm, stay the course. America is going to be here. Do not let short-term distractions take us off a long-term game.What is one thing that you got right in 2023?I think it is the connectivity piece — how critical connectivity is for everything. It's the gateway to banks, the gateway to education, the gateway to work. It has brought some renewed purpose back in our mission.One of the things I had to do early on is get the team aligned on our purpose. And the purpose is: We like connecting things and people. It has helped us in our company internally to rally around.I tell people, "You know, when a grandmother is calling a grandson, there's a high chance Verizon made that call happened. When a girlfriend calls you, there is a high chance we made that happen. When you can't go into work, you're not well, and you need to do a teledoc appointment, we made it work."So connectivity is key.What is one thing you got wrong in 2023?Return to office.At best, it has mixed results. We didn't have a mandate. We just told people, "At some point, you've got to start coming back to the office for two, three days a week." And I dug into that a little more.Gen Z is going to become the biggest workforce in the next couple of years. They have been pretty clear: They don't want to come into the office. They want to come in when they want to. They're willing to move cities, they're willing to move jobs. If we as a society, as a company, don't align on how they want to be served and how they want to work, we risk losing the talent pool.I'm part of a "bridge generation" of leaders. Most of my peers are 10 to 15 years older than me. I'm the bridge, and it's a generational thing.You will have companies that attract certain talent and companies that don't attract certain talent, and that's going to have long-term consequences. Continuing to be flexible, continuing to listen, and not having sharp mandates are important to us.

The CEO of Verizon's mobile unit has a bold ambition for salespeople and call centers in 2024

The telcos reportedly revealed this in response to a proposal by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (<keyword id="6356988" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="trai" source="Orion">TRAI</keyword>) to reduce <keyword id="12723416" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="USSD-charges" source="Orion">USSD charges</keyword> for mobile banking to zero. Currently, this costs ₹0.50 per session, down from the initial charges of ₹1.50 per session. USSD is short form for unstructured supplementary service data. Mobile banking services through USSD can be accessed using the *99# short code. Users can retrieve their mobile balance, mini statement, generate one-time passwords for banking services, and transfer funds via this service. Announcing its proposal, TRAI said, “The Authority proposes to revise the framework for USSD-based mobile banking and payment services by prescribing a “nil” charge per session as rationalisation is a necessity to protect interests of target user groups and promote digital financial inclusion.” In response to this, Airtel said it should be suitably compensated by the concerned stakeholders – likely the government and banks – if the charges are reduced to zero, according to a report by <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/telecom/telecom-news/telcos-against-zero-tariffs-for-ussd-based-services/articleshow/88246579.cms?from=mdr">ET Telecom</a>. Digital banking, and the expectation of instant transactions, is now the norm for the internet generation.<a href="https://twitter.com/elerianm/status/1635217036195557376" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Commenting in a tweet Monday on SVB's collapse</a>, Mohamed El-Erian, the chief economic advisor of Allianz, pointed to the "supersonic speed of information flows and deposit flight" in a world of "tech-enabled banking."James Bianco, the president of Bianco Research, said smartphones had removed "the frictions of standing in line" at banks and tellers being instructed "to count money slowly" if withdrawals spiked.Bianco said SVB's collapse should "scare the hell" out of bankers and regulators worldwide. The world has changed since 2008; the speed of a cascade could be very fast."<h2>Trump tears up the postcrisis playbook</h2>In the wake of the 2007-08 financial crisis, Obama pushed through the Dodd-Frank Act to straighten out America's banking sector. In 2018, Trump enacted significant changes to liberate all but the largest banks from Obama's safeguards.Crucially, Trump's regulatory rollback meant banks were considered "systemically important" — and therefore subject to closer federal oversight, including annual "stress tests" — only if they had assets of $250 billion or more, as opposed to the $50 billion-plus required by Obama's rules.<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/silicon-valley-bank-uk-unit-sale-hsbc-svb-svb-sivb-2023-3">SVB had $209 billion assets</a> at the end of 2022, meaning it wasn't considered systemically important.In other words, if Trump hadn't torn up the Dodd-Frank playbook, SVB would have been subject to an <a href="https://www.federalreserve.gov/supervisionreg/stress-tests-capital-planning.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">annual stress test by the Federal Reserve</a>. The stress test, per the Fed, "assesses whether banks are sufficiently capitalized to absorb losses during stressful conditions" while continuing to go about their daily business.SVB would also, pre-Trump, have been subject to stricter rules about how much capital it's required to hold and how liquid its assets needed to be.In the <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/markets-fed-consumer-demand-inflation-economy-interest-rates-recession-bofa-2023-2">new era of high interest rates</a>, SVB found itself sitting on paper losses from government bonds and mortgage-backed securities it bought when rates were much lower. And it wasn't able to liquidate these assets fast enough, and cover the shortfall from its losses, when its clients came calling with a collective demand for $42 billion in withdrawals.Nigel Green, the CEO of deVere Group, an independent financial advisor, said SVB's collapse had brought Trump-era deregulation into question. "It appears that the deregulation has allowed banks like SVB to take reckless risks," he said. "Now there needs to be a serious conversation about reversing the law to shore up confidence and to avoid further collapses."Sen. Bernie Sanders was more forthright.
