This is the third consecutive year that the share of women in the senior management roles 'considered essential for promoting diversity at workplaces' continued to decline, the report by consultancy firm <keyword id="20034170" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="grant-thornton-bharat" source="keywords">Grant Thornton Bharat</keyword> said. The onset of the pandemic around four years ago triggered a move to working from home, which offered a lot of flexibility for all the workers. However, with things getting back to normal, there has been a shift to working from offices and many companies are also ending the hybrid work models which they had adopted as the pandemic waned. The report, which comes ahead of the International Women's Day on March 8, is based on the inputs from about 300 women in senior management roles from as many companies. The consultancy firm said 34 per cent of women in Indian mid-market businesses currently hold senior management positions, which is modestly down from 36 per cent in 2023 and 38 per cent in 2022. It, however, stressed that the current percentage is much higher when compared to the 12 per cent figure in 2004 and 14 per cent a decade ago in 2014. Businesses offering a hybrid model have decreased to 56.5 per cent in 2024 from 62.3 per cent last year, while those asking employees to return to the office have increased to 34.7 per cent in 2024 from 27.4 per cent in 2023. It said staff working out of their homes has also significantly dipped to 1.8 per cent in 2024 from 5.3 per cent in 2023. The consultancy firm's chief business officer <keyword id="20865785" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="satya-jha" source="keywords">Satya Jha</keyword> said the need of the hour is to allow employees to work flexibly. I focused less on curating impactful or pretty posts and more on keeping my network up-to-date with my milestones.As more people reached my profile, I wanted to make my brand unmistakable. I added DE&amp;I to my career headline, got a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-professional-headshots-pictures-job-search-2023-4">professional headshot</a> for my profile picture, and wrote an extensive bio that told the story of who I was and what initiatives I cared about. I was scared of my commitment to LinkedIn being cringey, but the near-immediate payoff made it worth it.<h2 id="7072a11b-3638-4ef9-a53f-fabbca3ed831">LinkedIn landed me my next internship</h2>Within weeks of building my LinkedIn presence, recruiters from notable companies like Oracle, HubSpot, and Cisco Meraki started filling my DMs with job offers. I hopped on calls with every recruiter, regardless of my interest in pursuing a job with them, to build industry connections.A recruiter from Cisco Meraki asked me to apply for a full-time software engineer role. I told them I was still in college but would be interested in any <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/summer-internship-competition-handshake-2024-6">internship opportunities</a>. Within a month, I locked in an internship with them for the summer after my junior year.I continued posting on LinkedIn throughout that year, accepting more recruiter interviews and building my network.<h2 id="aea1f62c-3c64-40d2-bb42-d0813da7a53e">I've adapted my résumé for AI</h2>I applied to the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-internship-helped-twins-land-full-time-tech-job-2022-5">Microsoft internship program</a> four times before landing it this summer. I'm sure that my LinkedIn presence and growing number of professional experiences helped my chances. Still, I don't think I could've gotten the job without drastically changing<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-this-is-an-excellent-resume-2013-11"> my résumé</a>.Résumés these days are <a target="_blank" href="https://www.indeed.com/hire/c/info/ai-resume-screening?gad_source=1&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQjww5u2BhDeARIsALBuLnOqJiNp3foedw1gQkyjbGeh_JA6g52DUPK0nF3K8Wmrk3gJAY26JhkaAgN3EALw_wcB&amp;aceid=&amp;gclsrc=aw.ds">parsed through AI software</a> before even landing in the hands of a recruiter, so I optimized my résumé for AI by removing color and shaving it down to one page.I also ditched the "about me" section and only included my GPA upon request. I used the extra space to add more quantitative data about my tangible impacts at a given company. In my experience, numbers have always been more alluring to recruiters than a huge chunk of text.Most importantly, I did to my résumé exactly what I did to my LinkedIn: embodied a brand and told a story. My résumé isn't just a highlight reel of my most flashy achievements: it shows meaningful experiences representing my mission for inclusion in tech.<h2 id="17940356-eaf3-4614-b3b5-56d0c38a7fd1">I used GitHub to prep for my Microsoft interview</h2>I didn't hear back from Microsoft for months after applying for its internship until I stumbled on an unexpected email telling me I'd moved on to the final round of interviews. I was immediately skeptical of its legitimacy because I hadn't even done a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/12-things-you-need-to-know-to-ace-your-next-phone-interview-2012-2">phone screening</a> or online assessment. After doing what any normal human would do — consult Reddit for advice — I hesitantly accepted an interview scheduled a few weeks later.I was told to prepare for two 45-minute interviews, one of which was behavioral and the other was a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tips-on-how-to-ace-technical-interview-software-developers-2021-1">coding test</a>. I prefer having a step-by-step breakdown of how someone approached a problem.I also ensured I went into the interview knowing exactly what I wanted. I confidently told them about my passion for DE&amp;I and requested to work in <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/books-to-read-if-job-in-software-engineering">back-end engineering</a>. In fact, I told them if they only had an offer for the front end, don't hire me. The <keyword id="200126" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="morningstar" source="Orion">Morningstar</keyword> Investment Adviser <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>'s annual report on women fund managers in the asset-management industry said the total count of women fund managers has increased from 32 last year to 42 now. Interestingly, the total number of fund managers also saw a healthy increase this year to 428 from 399 last year. "When it comes to gender diversity, the latest findings of our report show that of the 428 fund managers, 42 are women who are managing funds either as primary or secondary managers," said the Morningstar report released ahead of International Women's Day on May 8. With a meagre 9.81 per cent representation, women still remain drastically under-represented among the ranks of mutual fund managers, Morningstar said. According to the report, there were only 18 women fund managers in 2017, and the number has increased gradually since then. The only exception was in 2020 when there was a minor decrease. "The 42 women fund managers were spread across 24 fund houses, with five fund houses having three or more women fund managers; six fund houses had two women fund managers while 13 fund houses had at least one-woman fund manager," it added. This latest research, published September 18 in the journal <a target="_blank" href="https://bmcmedicine.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s12916-024-03632-4">BMC Medicine</a>, suggests that what time of day someone is active could have an impact too.Professor Michael Leitzmann, lead author of the study and chair of the department of epidemiology and preventive medicine at the University of Regensburg, Germany, told Business Insider that the findings could be a helpful jumping-off point for research into new colorectal cancer prevention strategies.But he stressed that from a public health perspective, people should be encouraged to be active at any time of the day.Sam Orange, a senior lecturer in clinical exercise physiology at the University of Newcastle, UK, who has studied the impact of exercise on colorectal cancer prevention and was not involved in the study, told BI that the findings could help create more accurate and clearly-defined physical activity guidelines for cancer prevention.Leitzmann and his team analyzed the physical activity habits of 86,252 participants aged between 42 and 79 who shared their health and lifestyle information with the UK Biobank biomedical database. They were asked to track their activity by <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/tech/fitness-wearables-trackers-pros-cons-wellness-experts-2024-1">wearing a device </a>on their wrist known as an accelerometer.After five years, 529 of the participants were diagnosed with colorectal cancer, also known as bowel cancer.<h2 id="6b8ba93b-c26f-4d28-9c7d-f11348709b52">People who were active in the morning and evening had an 11% lower risk of developing bowel cancer</h2>The researchers identified four common patterns of activity: continuous daylong activity, activity late in the day, activity in the morning and evening, and activity at midday and at night.The primary finding was that two peaks of activity, one around 8 a.m. and the other around 6 p.m., was associated with <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/colon-cancer-risks-young-people-reduce-diet-alcohol-2024-2]">a lower colorectal cancer risk</a> "beyond the benefits of overall physical activity," the authors said.Daylong activity was associated with a 6% lower risk, and middle of the day and the night activity didn't appear to impact the participants' risk. Data from those who were only active later in the day was inconclusive.Further research is needed to confirm whether the time we exercise affects our colorectal cancer risk, but Leitzmann suspects it stems from beneficial biological processes being activated twice a day instead of once.In 2022, Orange's research group found in a study published in the <a target="_blank" href="https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/ijc.33982">International Journal of Cancer</a> that each exercise bout releases of cancer-fighting molecules into the bloodstream, which is thought to help reduce tumor growth. They used colon cancer cells and blood samples from 16 men over 50 who, due to lifestyle choices, had a higher risk of colon cancer."Therefore, being active twice daily, instead of once, could provide additional benefits by allowing more cancer-fighting molecules to be released into the bloodstream," he said.<h2 id="7b24935d-2048-40a9-98d6-76324185443c">More people under 55 are developing colon cancer</h2>Colorectal cancer is the third-leading cause of cancer-related deaths in US men and the fourth-leading cause in US women, according to The American Cancer Society. It's expected to cause about 53,010 deaths this year.The rate of people being diagnosed with the condition has fallen since the mid-1980s, but in people under 55, rates have been increasing by 1% to 2% a year since the mid-1990s, the Society said.Experts still don't know what's behind this uptick, but many potential explanations, including <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/eating-ultra-processed-foods-ovarian-brain-cancer-risk-2022-2">ultra-processed foods</a>, microplastics, and obesity, are being studied.Dr. Michael Shusterman, a gastrointestinal medical oncologist at NYU Langone's Perlmutter Cancer Center on Long Island, previously told BI that he typically recommends patients quit smoking; cut down on alcohol; do some moderate-intensity exercise; eat more fiber and less red meat; and avoid ultra-processed foods as much as possible to prevent colorectal cancer."Every movement counts for reducing colorectal cancer risk, meaning that doing any amount of physical activity is better than none," Orange said.

Some get fired.It could have happened, too, to Nigel Ford, who became briefly famous for hitting a woman's car in an angry showdown over a parking spot.More than a million people watched the video, filmed in Newport Beach, California, last month. Many called for his boss to punish him.But instead, his boss, Deena Saunders-Green, stood up for him.Saunders-Green employs Ford at Green Pines Media, a company that helps disadvantaged artists monetize their work.California's at-will employment laws mean she <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-a-company-may-terminate-you-after-giving-notice-2024-8">could fire Ford for any reason</a>, including going viral in an embarrassing video.But, she told Business Insider, she didn't want to judge her employee for a clip spreading online. Instead, she said, she acted based on his character, which she knew well."We're just trying to do business in a drastically different way, in a way that I wish our society and our culture and other employers would behave," Saunders-Green told BI. "We're all humans."<h2 id="860008a6-116a-4f53-8831-096b684e47a8">Social media vigilantes</h2>Saunders-Green said her husband told her about the video. It was shared by a creator named Danesh, who has built a following of 1.9 million for calling out people behaving badly in public — <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-do-entitled-people-behave-that-way-karen-meme-psychology-2020-7">known colloquially as "Karens."</a>The video was originally posted by a woman named Manuela on TikTok, who appears to be one of two people in the car. Two women can be seen calling him "crazy."One tells him that "wherever you work is really gonna love this" — seeming to expect that he would be punished.Manuela did not return a request for comment from BI made via TikTok.Danesh reposted the video to his popular Instagram account, tagged Ford's Instagram handle, and shared some of his personal and work information.Saunders-Green said Ford is generally "mild-mannered" and "just the nicest guy," so she contacted him to ask what happened.He apologized right away, Saunders-Green said, and was embarrassed that he lost his cool.(Saunders-Green forwarded an interview request to Ford himself, but he didn't respond.)"He told me that he was waiting for a parking spot, and someone swooped in and got it," Saunders-Green said of Ford. "How dare you reach out to me and try to bully me?"So, she decided to make her own video on August 19.In it, she showed some of the messages Ford had been receiving and said she was standing by him.It amassed over 3 million views, more than any single instance of the original meltdown video. <h2 id="f7ab2b84-d56e-4dc2-bc35-c0bdb06a6119">An easy target</h2>The general reaction was mixed. Many accused Ford of being aggressive toward the woman filming him, but others thought he had a right to be annoyed if she had stolen his spot.When Saunders-Green posted her video, a ton of support rolled in, with people praising her response."This is the most realistic, humanistic and genuine response I have watched in this app," one comment reads.Another said: "So rare these days to see someone giving someone else grace for having a bad day/moment. "Saunders-Green said Ford became a "scapegoat" and that "people needed something to be angry with.""He looked like this super-white guy, and how dare you use your white privilege or entitlement to bully a woman?" Saunders-Green said."I get it," she added. "I understand that completely. I'm an advocate for women. "I've always stated that I'm against harassment and threats."He said both he and Manuela have been "receiving threats and harassment" as well."I didn't see them ever encourage that in their videos, but by their own logic, should I still blame them?" he said.Danesh said he thought Ford was still refusing to take accountability and wanted to "blame the messenger.""I don't see people running to say, 'they were just having a bad day' when brown or black people are caught on camera assaulting someone," Danesh said. The League, a dating and social networking app that says it's for "ambitious" singles, reported male users who said they work in finance received likes "10% faster than before" and increased matches since Boni's TikTok blew up.As someone who is dating a man in finance, I'll be the first to admit that having a relationship with someone in an industry <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-wall-streets-culture-is-contributing-to-the-loneliness-crisis-2023-11">reputed for toxic workplaces</a> isn't always as fun as it sounds. "My mom's a doctor. Because they've been a couple for eight years, she said, she knew him before his "excruciating work hours."If she didn't know him so well, she said, she might feel "anxiety" about the lack of communication and access to his phone he typically has during long days on the job.She said she understands why people trying to pursue relationships with men in finance might wonder: "Does this guy even like me? He's not responding to me. He doesn't want to hang out with me."She said they've had to have "hard conversations" and set "boundaries" to ensure they prioritize each other despite their demanding careers.Big date nights happen a handful of times a month — and always on weekends — but they try to have dinner together during the week without phones or laptops present, she said.I asked her about the Journal's claim of a "finance bro" summer."What finance bro is actually having a finance bro summer?" she asked. "They don't really get a lot of time off."<h2 id="5a83f23b-e080-42d0-b553-bcc9c441ad77">Some seem obsessed with playing golf and making money</h2>In the summer of 2023, a woman interning at a private investment management firm in Boston met a senior investment consultant on a dating app. The woman, who asked to be referred to by her middle name, Summer, is now 23 and based in Washington DC.On paper, he fit her type — older, good-looking, and ambitious. They went on to date most of that summer.According to Summer, he was "obsessed" with two things: golf and money. Clark is different. She, herself, does not talk politics. She shoots threes and dishes dimes. She attends her contractual media interviews, and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.wsj.com/sports/basketball/caitlin-clark-nike-deal-415ee8ec">fields offers from the world's biggest shoe brands</a> who have been trying to partner with her since she was at school. But it's getting tougher for Clark (and the rest of the WNBA) to focus on work alone. Fouls that wouldn't even be a footnote in NBA coverage — fouls that other women across the WNBA commit and take every game — are suddenly talking points. Male sports commentators who have never given the WNBA airtime are dedicating<a target="_blank" href="https://www.the-sun.com/sport/11661889/angel-reese-skip-bayless-undisputed-caitlin-clark-wnba/"> multiple </a><a target="_blank" href="https://awfulannouncing.com/espn/stephen-a-smith-players-jealous-caitlin-clark.html">segments</a> to Clark's Black opponents, calling them jealous bullies who are out to hurt her. Matt Leinart, a former football player-turned-media personality, <a target="_blank" href="https://x.com/MattLeinartQB/status/1802403432076296466">said</a> on X that the WNBA should suspend Reese for an unintentional foul because it was "bad for the game." ESPN's Pat McAfee, a football pundit, compared Clark to Eminem in an inflammatory rant, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.si.com/wnba/pat-mcafee-caitlin-clark-controversial-rant">saying</a> that people don't want to give her credit because she's white. Fellow WNBA players started making statements, calling for the firestorm to stop. Many Black players, including Clark's own teammates, <a target="_blank" href="https://x.com/_Breezy_Briii/status/1798537220628107660">spoke up</a> about experiencing excessive racist abuse on social media in recent weeks. When <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5563352/2024/06/14/caitlin-clark-wnba-indiana-fever-dijonai-carrington-basketball/">asked</a> about her name being used "as a weapon in the culture wars dividing the country," Clark initially side-stepped the question. "I don't see it. That's not where my focus is," she said. "My focus is here and on basketball. That's where it needs to be, that's where it has been, and I'm just trying to get better on a daily basis." Some WNBA fans and players took issue with that response. "Silence is a luxury," Connecticut Sun forward Dijonai Carrington <a target="_blank" href="https://x.com/DijonaiVictoria/status/1801356856985850161">wrote on X</a>. And their compensation falls short, too. Media fanfare propelled Clarkinto a historic $28 million deal with Nike, which <a target="_blank" href="https://www.wsj.com/sports/basketball/caitlin-clark-nike-deal-415ee8ec">reportedly came with a signature shoe</a>— a huge moment for women's basketball, but one that stoked controversy because the only other two WNBA players with signature shoes, Sabrina Ionescu and Breanna Stewart, are also white. (Two weeks later, Nike said A'ja Wilson, a Black two-time MVP who has been with Nike since she was the top draft pick in 2018, will have a signature shoe in 2025.) It does underscore that the sports media ecosystem is wholly unprepared for the rise of women's basketball. Even before Clark, the price of the WNBA's media rights deal was expected to double in 2025, bringing a game-changing influx of cash to the table — money that can turn salaries from livable to luxurious, and investments into profit. But this moment, which has been building for decades, is being undercut by commentators and brands who are fixated on Clark. While there's no doubt her exceptional skill is a big reason why <a target="_blank" href="https://affiliate.insider.com?h=854d906b2c55a75f0a812ef8aca1a188c38bcd7da3106113ddd163fc78b1aa5c&amp;postID=6671adcfb38735ca9df3934c&amp;postSlug=caitlin-clark-is-a-rorschach-test-for-sports-media-2024-6&amp;site=bi&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.espn.com%2Fwnba%2Fstory%2F_%2Fid%2F40326422%2Fwnba-earns-record-tv-ratings-1st-month-record-attendance">ratings nearly tripled</a> during the first month of the season, it doesn't do Clark or the WNBA any favors to paint her as a precious legend in a league of her own who needs to be protected. She's working hard to diversify her game, to adjust to the next level, on and off the court. In one of her most recent interviews, Clark got more direct than ever. "Everybody in our world deserves the same amount of respect," Clark told James Boyd of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5564661/2024/06/14/caitlin-clark-agenda-comments/">The Athletic</a>. "The women in our league deserve the same amount of respect, so people should not be using my name to push those agendas." She's growing. It's time for the rest of us to do the same.
